Our buying guide will explain which type of heater would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.

No longer safe!
This heater model is a safety hazard. It has inherent flaws in its flue system which Canon is not prepared to acknowledge and fix. The heater is no longer able to operate in a modern house and pass current safety standards ( excessive leaking of carbon monoxide).
It is disappointing that Canon is still able to actually sell this product without any accountability. It is disappointing Australian heating retailers are now marketing overseas products as safer options to this Australian made dinosaur.

Useless without the remote control
the heater itself works great, damage, break or loose the remote control and you have an ornament, and at $380.00 plus for a replacement, I really regret having purchased this now less than useless piece of scrap ! Had I been told of this downfall, I never would have wasted my hard earned cash on this unattractive useless wall art !
Purchased at Unley for A$5,000.00.

I’ll join in any group that would like to fight cannon. What they have done is disgusting and terribly unfair to the consumer. Perhaps we should involve the media. I don’t have a heater now.

DO NOT BUY Flued or unflued these heaters are flawed and UNSAFE
If i could give less than 1 star i would.
We purchased a home with a Cannon log-fire heater. We have had nothing but problems with this heater from the moment we moved into the home.
We have experienced exactly the same issues described by the earlier review by [name removed]. Initial concerns occurred when we could smell gas, had the heater tested and they found it was spewing out toxic carbon monoxide fumes, at which point heater was disconnected for a month by the time Cannon could send one of their technicians out who did a number of tests...Read more

Unsafe for modern homes
I regularly service the Cannon Canterbury. Recently, we received a safety notice and arranged for a Cannon technician to come and conduct a safety inspection. He advised that it needed to be disconnected on the spot due to unsafe levels of carbon monoxide being produced from the heater. The Cannon technician reported my heater to the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) because I asked him not to disconnect it.
As mentioned by many people on this review (and who know how many others who are also suffering the same fate), the only other optio...Read more

the safety check, he told me that I could buy a new Cannon heater and have $1000 discount. What an insult. As if I would want another inferior Cannon product in my home. There is a review on this page that states, even when the customer had a flue installed, the heater is not safe. There is a fundamental flaw in the design, which Cannon have refused to address.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

A very problematic "free of charge service visit"
We received a letter dated on 17 July 2018 from Cannon, suggesting a "free of charge service visit" because of "the possibility for the glass on your heater to slip downwards from the its fixed position" of Cannon Canterbury.
The service was organised and a tradesman turned up, but the whole thing is ended with the power of our heater disconnected and a big bill is sent in to repair the thing the original letter did not mention.
This is a very problematic arrangement, which appears to be that the letter did not really tell what Cannon really wants to do - fix the glass or "hazardous levels of carbon monoxide", or that its contracting company wants to make use of this opportunity. In either case, Cannon should act responsibly.

Cannon Canterbury
Am asking anyone who has had their cannon Canterbury heaters switched off due to poor ventilation should get together to see if we can do anything. I will be seeking information as to what are our rights with these products that are not working unless we now install vents at our cost. My heater was switched off two weeks ago. The heaters of concern were manufactured within certain years. Why aren’t other models showing hazardous carbon dioxide. It’s really not fair after spending all this money that we now cannot use them. Would like to hear from other people in the same position. See if we can do something

Very happy
I had my Cannon Canterbury heater installed about 15 years ago, have it checked and serviced every two years, and I couldn’t be happier with it. The logs and flames make the living room look as cosy as it feels, and it heats up a considerable portion of my 2br apartment. One of the best purchases I ever made.

Cannon does not stand by it's product
We arranged for our Cannon Canterbury gas log fire to have a safety inspection following the safety notice that was issued. It was found to omit high levels of carbon monoxide and as such was disconnected on the spot. The options now are to install ventilation throughout the house (not an acceptable option) or install a brand new heater ($5k). I spoke to Cannon about the issue and they are refusing to provide any type of compensation, blaming Energy Australia and our house for being well insulated.

Disconnected for a second time
My heater was installed in 2002 and into an existing chimney. In 2016 it was checked following a recall and the serviceman disconnected my gas until a flu was installed in my chimney. This was not required at time of purchase, which was the selling point on this heater.
I have received a recent call from a service company to inspect my heater. He attended today and said I risked carbon monoxide poisoning, as the level was above 400. He said I now need a fan in the flu, and will send a quote for a whole new heater. Once again a serviceman disconnected my gas.
The heater appears to work fine. Why am I expected to pay to replace the heater if it was a known recall.

We bought a cannon canterbury from ebay about 6 years ago.
Worked well enough for about 18 months, then the flame started to die out & we where getting sick.
Best thing i did was get it removed & tossed away.
Installed a wood heater which kills the gas log heater.

Non-stop issues
I bought this heater some years ago now but every 2 years since purchase when we get it serviced, we have had issues. The previous Canon guidelines allowed installation allowed was that it didnt require a flue. However, this has meant we have non-stop issues with technicians coming out and telling us we are in danger of carbon monoxide leakage. Apparently Canon is aware of this legacy issue but wipes its hands off saying its a installation issue and not theirs even though the shop it has been purchased through (Origin, no longer in business) did the install. Buy from a manufacturer that stands by a product and doesnt blame an installer.

Great if it goes.
This heater is a great concept with the power flue allowing it to be flued through a wall, floor etc, but it is totally unreliable we have had it for 1.5 winters and have had the serviceman out 3 times last year and calling him again tomorrow. Honestly just a waste of money and a source of frustration I don't need. Buy a Rinnai portable for a fraction on the cost, it will start first time every time, heat the room just the same.

In the 2 years its been installed I have only been able to use it for properly for about 5 months. Last winter it wouldn't run on high flame or high fan, only low low if we were lucky. I was told I could purchase a new one direct from them for a discount as they've were unable to or find a fault! Who in their right mind would purchase another heater to replace a broken one??????? Mine is working well and I'm happy with it
Have one of the old models with the side switches. No CO leakage, service tech says because mine is well installed and also my house is old and well ventilated so no negative pressure. It easily heats my living areas and kitchen and I hardly use my ducted heating. So far it has started reliably. Just had it serviced, cleaned the glass, and it's better than ever. Does dry the air a bit though. Feel sorry for the people with the leakage issues, must be frustrating. I'm lucky to have a good one.

Breathing New Life into old unit.
Having had the "Canterbury" inbuilt for 15 years you could be beguiled into believing that having it services regularly would be best. However over the years it has died to a slight glow even at its highest level. The recent Sanford IXL check suggested there were no problems but it may need a new control panel which they do not make anymore. $3500 for a replacement unit meant there was nothing lost for me to pull it apart so the new one could be fitted in. I confirmed that the control box was no longer on production but it appeared to work fin...Read more
e. I was concerned that the gas solenoids on the regulator may be the problem but there did not appear to any problem there. I kept on stropping out the unit and when i removed the burner I found flakes of carbon build up in the box prior to the air mixing chamber. There was slight carbon buildup on the two jets. I cleared out a lot of carbon debris from the pre-mixing chamber and after 4 hours work without any instruction manual and basic gas plumbing knowledge we have breathed new life into the unit. My wife believes it is better than it was originally. It is now superb! The service agents have all been recommended by Cannon including the recent one 3 months ago but clearly there is a level of knowledge and skills that are lacking in these service agents. If a new control box was available we would have been led down the wrong path. The cause of the build up may be the quality of the Natural Gas it is hard to see how the carbon buildup would be so far back from the actual burner. Hope this helps but is should be something that authorised service technicians are aware of. August 26th 2017 Update: Cannon Unapologetic and do not acknowledge the serious fault Cannon now know about a problem and by not acknowledging it to us, they are leaving their customers floundering. Our local sales agent say they just throw out the old Canon Canterbury units. We are still enjoying ours no thanks whatever to Canon. My review 'Breathing new Life into old unit" on this site, dated Sept 2016 was responded to by Canon who said "It is great to read that your heater is operating well. It is strongly recommended that all gas related products should always be attended to by an authorized person and serviced at least once every two years." The point I make is that year after year many technicians, recommended by Canon, demonstrated they had no idea how to maintain the unit. Several technicians advised to buy a new one. We ordered a new unit and we were awaiting delivery at a cost of $3500. Cannon should be thankful for the advice accept this particular fault exists, and promote information about it to its customers who can ensure technicians are competent. Not an acceptable behaviour of Canon. August 1st 2018 Update: Another Recall1 comment

Hi Nicole - you're probably having trouble getting anyone to touch it because they know that there has been a safety notice put on the heaters. As you can see from all the reviews, the product is flawed and Cannon really don't like helping people. They 'help' you by getting one of their technicians come to your house and disconnecting it. It's really sad, because the IXL Group are an Australian family owned company - they are just rubbish at looking after their customers.
I sent Cannons message 5 days ago and have had no reply.

Has anyone had any success with trying to get Cannon to rectify the negative pressure issue? By this, I specifically mean did Cannon replace anyone’s gas heaters at their own expense? It seems to me that they are walking away from their responsibilities by simply having a plumber do a ‘safety check’ and then disconnecting the heater. Leaving you in the cold.
I still have the VBA on my back asking me when I’m planning on installing ventilation in my house (at my own expense). Or when they can come and disconnect my heater.
A faulty product that no one wants to stand by and we are all made the scapegoats.

Hi mai. I’m in the same situation as you. I had a plumber and energy safe Victoria come over. My gas heater was switched off and I now have to put ventilation in order for the heater to be turned on. All expenses are going to have to be paid by me. I’m not confortable with this vent as it still might not solve the problem. I don’t think that we as customers should be treated this way as all the other models of heaters don’t require vents in order to work. I believe we they should replace our heaters at their expense. I have tried to take this further but need additional help by more customers. We should try a current affair as we are lucky no one was tragically killed. Please let me know if we can take action. It’s not fair that we can’t use our heaters.
Tesesa - I have sent you a private message. Please check your in box.
My situation is the same as Teresa and Mai, almost as though it was scripted that way.
I understand where Cannon and ESV are coming from, but if Cannon still have this unit on the market it stinks. We tried the ventilation and it required a huge open area and we froze.

Have a Cannon Canterbury fire and was contacted two years ago regarding having the fire tested at that testing the gas technician said I did NOT have any CO emission problems I was contacted recently by cannon again to have some brackets retrofitted to my fire because of an other fault which caused the glass to slip the technician then called me into the room to see how the glass had slipped ... and sure enough it Had ! I had only had the fire cleaned and serviced before last winter ! when the technician then tested the fire, that he said was routine practice when any work was done on a fire, he found I did have CO emissions, he then proceeded to do a negative pressure test opening up windows, closing them and switching on fans... he said that I had a ventilation issue and had Disconnected my fire and suggested I purchase a new one with a powered flu where do I stand on this issue? I now have no fire, which was working perfectly before hand ....I am not happy at all
4 answers
That's exactly what happened to us. We weren't having any issues and never operated the fire under the test conditions with all exhaust fans running etc. The only reason we had it tested was we heard about the potential safety issue for the Cannon brand. Our fire was disconnected on the spot, Cannon didn't want to know about it and we ended up having to purchase a new gas log fire ($5k).
I'd go to Cannon about a replacement, and if no joy, take it to the ACCC!
Teghan R.Cannon
Dear Ms Magee,
Thank you for your comments and thoughts.
Cannon Appliances is currently undertaking a Voluntary Safety Check on certain model heaters which were manufactured between March 2001 and October 2009. For certain heaters manufactured between 2001 and 2006 which previously had a safety check performed, and these heaters only, it is possible that the front glass concealing the firebox could slip downwards from its fixed position leaving a small opening which could allow combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, to escape into the room.
In order to avoid the potential of this occurring, Cannon Appliances have been proactive in contacting owners of these heaters to arrange for a service technician to re-attend, at Cannon’s cost, to inspect the heater and fit glass support spacer brackets to ensure movement of the glass does not take place. As part of any work performed on a gas heating appliance, a safety check must be performed in accordance with the test methods outlined by the governing gas safety regulator. If the heater, or its installation, is found to be unsafe for any reason then the law requires the heater to be disabled until such time as the heater and its installation are safe to use. It is at the discretion of the householder should they wish to decline and not have their heater checked, however under strict guidelines Cannon Appliances must report any such occurrences to the Regulator.
Negative pressure is caused by the environment the heater is installed in and not a manufacturing defect. Most gas heaters are designed to burn using air drawn from the room. Rising hot air expels the products of combustion (smoke and gases) up the flue (or chimney) and into the outside air. Range hoods and exhaust fans can compromise this process, as they suck air from the room and expel it outside. This air has to be replaced and must come from somewhere. In many houses, this replacement air will come through gaps such as those around doors and windows. However, in a tightly sealed house with a flued heater and a strong exhaust fan, the only source of replacement air may be the flue or chimney in which case the heater’s exhaust gases, including carbon monoxide, may be drawn into the room rather than up the flue.
Building standards prohibit the creation of negative pressure in a home. Rectifying negative pressure is the homeowner’s responsibility. Energy safety regulators have developed simple tests to identify negative pressure in the home. These tests should be carried out when any gas heater is serviced. Refer to the following link for further information pertaining to negative pressure … https://youtu.be/-BMy9lvJM2s.
Given the findings indicated in your post, the options you have are to fix the negative pressure by increasing the ventilation to your home or purchasing a new heater in the form of a powerflue.
Kind regards Cannon Appliances
