Washing Machines Buying Guide
Our buying guide will explain which type of washing machine would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.
Terrible
Stay away from F&P... their washers are made to breakdown just outside of warrantee this way they make more $$ on parts and service.
Fisher and Paykel washers are poor quality washers - my top loader broke down and was only two weeks out of warrantee - Fisher and Paykel said bad luck... it would have costed about $450 to fix via Fisher and Paykel. I think that it disgusting behaviour from any organisation... through my own personal research, I would recommend a Bosch front loader.

i bought a new fisher and paykel washing machine before i moved house because it was on special. Used it once and worked really well. Moved house- washing machine completely died and i was told it was because i didnt handle it with care while moving ( i moved 15mins away) even when it was only 3wks old.
stops working all the time and repair costs are so expensive.

I would never buy another Fisher and Paykel washing machine. I am most disappointed with the brand. Getting it serviced is a nightmre.
The washing action is good, but that's about all
creases the clothes badly. I have tried everything - reducing spin speed, increaing water level and length of washing time. Nothing works. I have been told by Fisher and Paykel that it's just the way it is and there is nothing I can do. Service is a nightmare. It is impossible to get a mechanic to service the machine as soon as you say the brand.

Like come other reviewers, I like Ficher and Paykel's innovative products. The service can be a pain. I've had my washing machine 8 years and had one call out for $200 all up. It's now got a slight proble with cycle programming. But ofr 8 years use I think that's acceptable. I haven't encountered much in the way of marking that others have noticed either.
water level sensing, quiet (except for final spin), well-balanced, gentle and handwash cycles and creasefree options, no gearbox, delay feature. Hasn't damaged clothes
a little temperamental on servicing and repairs

Great machine always like Fisher & Paykel. Had this machine for about 2 years now. Can wash bulk things in this machine. Not like other machines sounds like they are washing but they are not. To have a test on a non Fisher & Paykel machine. Put a blanket in it and see if the adgatator is moving. With fisher and Paykel It will. (1 Queen Size Blanket to a Meduim to Large Machine Only). And it is all down to the motor that can make this happen. They call it Smart Drive. I remamber the first smart drive i brought. Never looked Back. Had that for ten years. When i upgrade there was still nothing wrong with the old machine but got to stay up with the times. Give this machine a Very High rating A++++++++++++++++

I bought the Fisher & Paykel Intuitive Eco after my Hoover died while trying to wash my queen size doona. It would have to be one of the best major appliances I have ever bought, definately worth the price and I couldn't be happier. After a lot of research to replace my Hoover, I decided on the F & P IW812, because I was very particular on the features I wanted - in this time of drought and water restrictions in Australia, a water saving option was my major consideration, others were large capacity, energy rating, other consumer's reviews and r...Read more
eputable brand. I noticed the difference in the quality of my washed clothes from the first time I used it. I had tried all sorts of variations with washing powders, liquids and stain removers from the least expensive to the most expensive with my other machine, and I just accepted that some stains can't be removed. WRONG. Not one article of clothing with the F & P has come out looking anything less than vibrant and washed to perfection. The most amazing thing about this machine for me is the Handwashing option. Items I would NEVER have dared to put into a washing machine come out looking, I have to admit it, better than when I gently hand washed them. All the different cycle options that are available are fantastic; there's even a "Bits & Beaches" cycle for after a day at the beach. The fact that it also has a "Doona" cyle is terrific. You can programme it to suit you're favorite cycle type too and it's not hard to learn them. The clothes are spun to such a degree that they are basically almost dry when it's finished, so my clothes Dryer now has to work less to get them completely dry, which means more economical on the electricity bills as well. It's so quiet that you could almost forget about it, but then it beeps a few times to let you know it's finished. It also beeps to advise you if the load is unbalanced, and it stops so it avoids unnecessary damage. I noticed the difference on my first water bill too - this machine has auto water level sensing so it only uses as much as is really needed for each individual load, so water is not wasted. It "Powers Off" at the end of the cycle and if you need it, you can also pre-programme it to start in a certain amount of time i.e. half hour, half day, etc. With three children who get every type of stain on clothes, this machine does the most amazing job. It's large capacity means I can do fewer loads which in turn is more economical, both on water and electricity. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this washing machine at all. Large capacity; water saving options; auto fabric sensing; auto water level sensing; handwashing cycle; "Power Off" at end of cycle; beep when cycle finished or if load is unbalanced; clothes are spun to almost completely dry; large buttons and display Lid is not flat so awkward to use as storage; sides of interior aren't flat either so you have to find another place to put dispenser while filling with washing powder; sometimes dispenser cap falls into wash during washingSimilar opinion? We got ours for an absolute bargain as it was the last one left. I cannot fault this washing machine. We have always had fisher and paykel. This one leaves everything so clean and the fabric and water level sensing make things so much easier.
IW712: Spins clothes so well, auto water level sensing, great and trusted brand

no hesitation in highly recommending this machine to any prospective buyer. This machine is suited to, if not any; most washing needs/requirements.
EVERYTHING! Its got to be th ebest on the market. Others putting a negative spin on this machine have no intuition on how to operate it properly. 8kg's is 8kg's NOT 10-12kg's! as some don't realizee that overloading a machine regardless of what brand will not wash your clothes because there isn't enough water circulating freely between the clothes during a cycle. It pisses me off to see others bag a...Read more

To GR81too....perhaps what you consider clean is a bit different to what others with higher standards might consider clean. I did not realise that one needed "intuition" to operate a washing machine! Why would it p*## you off if others are not at all happy with this machine? I do not overfill mine, I underfill if anything and the resluts I experience are less than poor. My IW812 was a replacement due to the Aquasmart also being a poor performer. My theory is that Fisher & Paykel do not know what they are doing when it comes to making a dec...Read more
ent washing machine. I have many other appliances made by them that are fine....the washing machines however are very much found wanting. DO NOT BUY ONE WHATEVER YOU DO...ALSO IF YOU DO HAVE A PROBLEM, THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AVERAGE AT BEST. 8kg size...that is all. EVERYTHING! It does not wash clothes or anything else properly! Leaves gunky muck all over the load. This happens when operating instuctions are followed to the letter. I do not use fabric softner, I do not overfill the machine yet gunk is still left. IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK THAT CLOTHES SHOULD COME OUT CLEANER THAN WHEN THEY GO IN? I am only talking about very lightly soiled here too. Worst washing machine ever. Do not buy Fisher & Paykel washing machines full stop.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Of course this may not happen but illustrates my distaste for frontloaders.
Once the door is shut no adding to the load.
Well not easily.
Don't move house too often because they are ridiculously heavy due to concrete blocks attached to the bowl to stabilise them.
Definately not a service friendly appliance with so much crammed into a small cabinet.
And a lot of them seem to have way too many hoses that could and do leak.
I am sorry to hear about a $550 quote because that is exactly what I am trying to eliminate by my post.
That is extreme...Read more

I love it..I do turn it off and unplug from the power point when not in use as I do with my computer to protect from power surges where i can...Not too many washing machines don't have some sort of electronics these days.
I love it and haven't regretted purchase...
I am really surprised by all the bad comments so far with this machine....I am assuming i have the right machine--I have the F & P Intuitive Eco model..can't see a model number though.....I have had my machine for 14 months now and love it. Formerly had a Hoover that jumped around t...Read more

The salesman at FS Appliance was very convincing when he told my wife & I that Fisher & Paykel was the best washing machine on the market. Since it was relatively new on the market 5 1/2 years ago, we had only the saleman's word to go on. The five year warranty made us believe it was a product the company stood behind. Soon afterwards, we realized that it did not clean our clothes effectively. Clothes we used while doing yard work came out of the machine looking just a tad bit cleaner than when they went into it. We've decided that the pu...Read more
rchase was a poor one & will not buy another Fisher & Paykel. The spin cycle was very nice in that a lot of moisture was taken out of the clothes prior to placing them in the dryer. That saved quite a bit on natural gas. The Fisher & Paykel does not clean clothes as effectively as my previous Whirlpool top loading machine at half the price. It sprung a leak in a gromet, where the water temperature sensor probe is inserted at the water inlet bowl. I can't understand why anyone with half a brain would design such a machine placing the computer next to the water inlet valves and having no escape for water should a leak occur. Yup, my machine sprung a leak, (six months after the warranty expired), which shorted out the computer, a $300 repair estimate. I just ordered a new Whirlpool from Sears!!!! After all the searching out for the best value for money, we were diappointed with this machine but not thoroughly.IOt does clean the clothes well on norma settings, but if you try to use the fancy ones then you are wasting your time. The 8 kg capacity label is a bit of a furfy. All the salesmen we spoke to had no hesitation in telling us that the bowl was the same as a 7kg machine-it was the way the machine used the water. We found that we could be caught out with overloading and hence had soap powder remnants on our clothes.

Only had the machine for 6 months so still early days.
Bought an extended warranty just in case of any problems after reading reviews, but I think this model may be a newer version so hopefully nothing will go bang.
Always unplug when not in use, don't want to tempt fate.
Can be programmed to do anything including handwashing.
Have used to cycle to wash kids running shoes and they can out like new!
So far have not had any problems. Machine is fast and my clothes are clean.

once an option is set eg favourite wash cycle, machine is easy to use. Havent had to get repaired yet though. I hope the fairly high cost means it will run well for some time
looks nice and is quiet. Our water comes from a rain water tank so the automatic water saving option is good.
can be brain straining to check all the options

How do you set washing cycles on this machine so I don't have to keep setting it every time i use it?

Dont have your model washing machine. Sorry unable to help you.
As far as I know, these machines do not have a "favourite" feature.

IW812 had Fault code 37 and in a Diagnostic mode the Pump was not pumping out, changed the diverter valve, now it pumps out in the diagnostic mode but in normal operation, it seems stuck in the recirculating mode and won't drain. I have checked the Pump and the drain hose all good. Any ideas?
