I do lots of palms and lots of foxtails. They seem to wear blades quickly. Machine has done about 35 hrs. I am on 3rd set of blades and need to turn anvil around. Is this normal? Any suggestions?
Can anvil be resharpened? If so, what cutting angle?

I have had the blades sharpened - not replaced - 3 times. (Cost $20 each time). The anvil is at 90deg, (blades 40 deg) you should be able to rotate it once, then I'd guess resharpen it or get a new one. Wear depends on what you are chipping with the machine, perhaps palms are more abrasive, particular if dry. Ask the Hansa people, they are very helpful and have given me a jig (which I have not used yet) for resetting the blades after sharpening.

Keatings
Keatings

I sharpen my blades also. What does jig do? Is it to get correct anvil setting?

Hansa Chippers
John L.Hansa Chippers

Hi Keatings, Mark is right, you can get your blades sharpened and it is quite affordable. For you to be going through blades that quick and the anvil needing replacement you must be putting through small stones or something similar (grit or sand) when picking up the palms from the ground. We sell hundreds of sets of blades a year but i could count the fingers on one hand the amount of anvils we sell a year.
You cannot sharpen the anvil as this will increase the gap between the blade and the angle too much. Turn it around 180 degrees and use but under normal working conditions this should last you at least 3 years.

Hi. When my c7 is fully disengaged and powered up I notice the flywheel will spin slowly before I start to wind to engage, the belts seem to contact the pulleys sufficiently for this to happen. Is this normal? Belt issue perhaps? Only 4 hrs through the machine.

Our C7 seems to be chewing up the drive belts, have replaced them 4 times since we bought the unit ( 4years now). Is there a way to stop this happening, or better belts available.

I've never needed to replace a drive belt..... so I assume you've either got them too tight or too loose.

Bernard Flynn

I suspect the drive belts are too loose. There is an adjustment to allow for belt wear. Hansa should be contacted.

Hi Paul,

There are a few contributing factors which may cause belt failure on your machine, these are:

- Over / under tensioning;
- Machine overload;
- Pulley misalignment;
- Idler wheel seized;
- Interference within the belt drive itself.

It is critical to ensure when tensioning your new belts, that you always ensure they are engaged with 1 turn of tension, this detailed on page 12 of our C7 Operations, Maintenance and Safety Manual.

If you require a copy of the above manual, please do not hesitate to email us at [email protected] and we can arrange to forward either a copy via email or by mail.

Hi Hansa thanks for answer about toi toi etc. What is the max diameter of bambo would a C7 handle ok. Both freshly cut and dried bambo And any hints...

1 answer
Hansa Chippers
John L.Hansa Chippers

Hi Ian,
It is recommended the maximum chipping capacity of any material processed through our C7 chipper is 70 mm. The drier the material e.g. Hardwood, the harder wearing on your blades. We would also suggest where possible varying the load and substance of materials processed through your machine to guarantee ultimate results and minimise wear and tear on your machine.

Hi Hansa I am in NZ Will the C7 handle Toitoi, Jasmin(the runers are like thin rope) and Flax Ok Or will they get caught around the shalft etc.

Any hints to stop this.

I have not had the experience of dealing with this material but I would say that the knives are sharp and the the material is reasonably dry you should not have any problems.
I have found that wet material is inclined to clog so it is best to feed slowly and allow the machine to clear

Hansa Chippers
John L.Hansa Chippers

Hi Ian,

Our C7 design is catered to sufficiently cope with the processing fibrous textured materials.

As Toitoi and flax are somewhat similar in texture, as long as the machine's cutting surface positioning and the sharpness of blades are maintained in accordance with manufacturer standards you shouldn't experience any major issues.

Please note: The resultant mulch may appear quite stringy and if similar materials are continuously processed without variation, e.g. string and fibrous, you may experience some minor jamming. As a preventative action we would suggest to vary materials being processed to assist in keeping the system cleared.

Some additional helpful tips when processing fibrous materials are:

- It may assist to set the anvil slightly closer than usual.
- Hold the flax together tightly as a bundle and feed it like a stick.
- Shuffle the bundle in and out so that just a little gets sheared off the end at a time, this helps to shear and cut the flax against the anvil instead of allowing the rotor to pull strips through.

In relation to your question on the processing of Jasmine, we don't foresee any real issues in this as we've had people report processing similar i.e. Ivy. Again it would be recommended as above to vary the materials being processed.

If we can assist any further please let us know.

I have a Hansa C6 about10 years old and I love it.
Servicing has never been a problem, and repairs have been ongoing.
Now I have a problem and have to remove the pulleys from the flywheel shaft for removal.
I have removed the 6 mm bolts holding the twin pulleys together and the rear one just slipped away. The front pulley will not budge. Any suggestions welcome.

I would think you’ll need a puller. But I can’t work out why you’d need to take them off the shaft.....

WWW

Thanks Mark, have puller wont work. I have seriously damaged the vanes on the flywheel and they require some heat and welding, cant be done without removing from the bearing whisch can’t be removed until the pullies are removed.

Hansa Chippers
John L.Hansa Chippers

Hi WWW,

The pulley set up on your machine is a standard bi-loc pulley arrangement in which the bush and pulley are tapered to lock in place once secured.

To set in position, align the rotor pulley with the engine pulley so that they run true.

We hope the above information assists with your enquiry.

I have contacted Hansa directly a month ago but no answer yet. It really irritates me when companies put a "contact us" form on their website then proceed to ignore your question. Anyway...I want to know if it is possible to buy a weather protection cover for my C7 chipper. I am very happy with it's performance so far
( used twice in a month) but I would feel better if it was covered like a Weber BBQ ! THanks, Jenda

Hi Jenda,

Our sincere apologies for our non-response. We were experiencing some technical difficulties approximately a month ago which may have been the contributing factor in our non-receipt of your enquiry at the time.

In response to your enquiry regarding a cover for your C7, unfortunately we currently do not sell protective covers for our machines, however we do believe that these would be a viable accessory option for our lifestyle range and are currently investing options to make available in the future.

The Honda cx200 on my Hansa C7 muncher Chipper engine works perfectly. Carburettor clean, fuel flow ok, spark plug ok, air filter clean. But when I start to mulch stuff the engine dies.
What gives? Apart from my normally calm demeanour?

Mark Radnor
Mark Radnor

This has to be a fuel system problem. I agree with previous answer, but would also check air cleaner, fuel filter, needle valve in carby etc

Hansa Chippers
John L.Hansa Chippers

Hi James, sorry to hear that you are having issues with the motor. The most likely cause is either the engine oil level is too low or a faulty oil sensor. First step would be to check the engine oil level and if the level is correct then unplug the yellow oil sensor. If it runs normally then this would indicate that the oil sensor needs to be replaced.

I recently purchased a used C7 which had just had a set of new blades installed, It has been working well, I am currently working through a lot of assorted mostly quite dry prunings, although mostly under 25mm (anything bigger is combustion heater fuel)
I noticed today it was struggling a little, and on shutting down I find the blades quite badly chipped. I would have expected they may have lost their edge, but was astonished to see the damage, Is there any chance there could be some faulty (over hardened / brittle) blades out there?

I have not had this problem. If the blades are genuine Hansa blades it would be most unusual and should be referred to the manufacturer. I imagine there would be warranty on genuine parts.

My belts went today and I'm having trouble changing them - do I need to remove/move the engine to get at it properly? I haven't tried that yet as I thought I'd be able to slip them on but they are very tight and can't get them over the pulleys.

Hi Aussie, to replace the belts, remove the four engine mounting bolts and slide the engine away from the chipper to allow clearance to replace the belts. Install the new belts and re-bolt the engine.
Please feel free to contact us by phone or email if you require further information or assistance, or if you require a copy of the Operation and Maintenance Manual.

Thanks! Yes very good advice - I wasn't certain how I would go but it was easy to do in the end and worked a treat :)
As per another answer to a similar question on this page, I also marked where the engine base was with a pen/pencil before moving and that helped line everything back up when re-bolting the engine on.

Thank you again

I have not had to do this yet, however I do know you need to remove/move the engine. This may seem like a major task, but it actually looks pretty easy. Once I get to that I intend on making a video and putting it up on YouTube.

Glen

I've found it easy to do with my machine. It's an older design which has the clutch lever (I believe the newer ones use a jack screw). Remove the two bolts holding the belt guard. Remove the four bolts holding the engine to the engine mount and move the engine out of the way. Then the belts can be pulled off the bottom pulley. It's the reverse procedure to put belts back on.
Tips: Marking the position of the engine on the mount before undoing anything so you can get it back to the same position. Once everything is back together, use a paint pen to mark the orientation of the nut/bolt head in relation to what it's securing so it's easy to see if they're coming loose - I've never had this problem, but I see it as cheap insurance (just like grease, oil and filters).
