I’ve put a coat of Epoxy Rust Kill on some steel gates. What is the best product to paint over this now to give me a good hard durable finish?

Terry Tinnie
Terry Tinnie ·

as I have said before preparation is the key to success clean surfaces with something like prepsol or acetone then apply a primer to help paint adhere to surface such as a metal primer by killrust. Then apply an epoxy topcoat such as killrust epoxy by dulux/Wattyl. and repeat top coat couple of times after it dries to give it a bit of depth.
I must note that if you just spray on or paint on a top coat without cleaning off any dust dirt or grease oil from your gates then you will be open to peeling quickly. Also there are other products on the market however the above mentioned I know to hold up well with proper and prepared surfaces before top coat applied. I also believe that some of the hammertone killrust Wattyl products are heavy duty but same guidelines apply and suggested a couple of top coats

Thank you, I gave it a light rub with 150 grit and a coat of Wattyl Rust Kill top coat. I’ve leave it now till the weekend and repeat.
Thanks for your help

Can I mix kill rust with a water based outdoor paint? It's to paint corrugated iron for fence.

Bela
Bela ·

No. Killrust is oil based and will not mix with anything water based

Hi there. Just came across a stash of 20L tins of unopened Killrust Topcoat. They are not corroded, and they are the "modern" tins, but might be 4 or 5 years old. Will it still be AOK to use??

Bela
Bela ·

I wouldn't have any problems with using it but I wouldn't resell them.

Terry Tinnie
Terry Tinnie ·

I have checked material safety data sheets and technical sheets and shelf life half life sheets and it appears that most ingredients such as activators dryer ingredients have shelf life of 1-2 years and enamel activators 2 years so as said before, I also would not resell these tins. However I would advise you to stir really, REALLY well (as with most paint in tins left for long time) with flat stirring sticks or electric. Please note that as far as I can read the info, this product should not be stored at temperatures lower than 10 degrees or over 35 degrees or applied outside these temperatures otherwise intended effect will not be effective. Make sure tins have not been opened or exposed to outside air as shelf life will decrease accordingly or be compromised quality. I hope this helps. Just as an added note shelf life means like it sounds, how long you can leave it on the shelf unopened without it going off or being unusable. Half life means when a product reaches its peak storage time, from this point on it starts to deteriorate or become less effective. Thank you for listening lol.

I am going to be painting my trailer. It has old paint on it so I was wondering if it all has to come off or if I can give it a good scuff up and the paint will stick?

Bela
Bela ·

All loose paint and surface rust has to be scrubbed off for the paint to adhere and last a long time

Terry Tinnie
Terry Tinnie ·

I also agree with the other gentleman wholeheartedly and with respect. I also would check the type of paint previously used and whether the trailer is made of steel or aluminium for example which needs etch primer instead of just killrust. also as epoxy enamel is different to the cheaper paints, there will be a reaction caused by two different types of paint in some cases so do a test coat in a small area to see if there is a bad reaction. If not then continue to paint with confidence. so with steel clean up and do a test to see if it reacts badly, with aluminium apply an etch primer first and clean the surface of all grease and oil first. Before I forget, check the paint tin you are using to see if it says it needs a primer first. Wattyl killrust products on steel require some cleanup of rust scale then apply straight to surface.

Petroleum effects on the Gloss enamel using around car petrol Tank??

Terry Tinnie
Terry Tinnie ·

as always preparation is the key, cleaning oil and grease from surface to be painted, applying correct primer if aluminium, and removing rust scale or loose rust with a wire brush or appropriate tools, if it was me I would use a product similar to prepsol or acetone to clean surface then primer then paint with gloss enamel to create a superior bond and superior resistance to petroleum products being absorbed in any way.

will 2pak clear go over killrust gloss?

Charles k

I have only used it on bare metal...cant help u there

Terry Tinnie
Terry Tinnie ·

As stated in usage information of polyurethane 2 pack clear coat made by Wattle/Dulux, if you use an epoxy primer such as killrust etch primer for aluminium then the 2 pack clear should apply ok. As always it wont work properly unless you use a prep solvent first to remove any greasy or dirt from the surface.

What happen if I use thinner to mix wattyl kill rust epoxy enamel instead of the recommended turpentine.

Terry Tinnie
Terry Tinnie ·

Hi Tony, as far as I know after reading material safety data sheets and recommendations from paint suppliers, Turpentine is preferred due to most generic solvents cause shrinking and cracks when used as thinners for epoxy paints and resins. I do know that applying boiling water and sitting the paint container in the boiling water will thin out the epoxy paint enough to spray better, however most solvents evaporate too quickly to be used as thinners with epoxy enamel and in turn cause cracking and reducing the water resistance/waterproofing properties needed for the job. Turpentine is used due to its slow evaporation and ability to retain the epoxy water proofing properties of the paint. it must be noted that there are great products out there that have a "careful" balance of specific solvents, depending on how much you can afford. do not heat epoxy with flame. most Wattyl Killrust epoxy products don't like a lot of solvents (unless you are just using them for clean up). turpentine is generally cost effective, and safe in retaining epoxy enamel properties. I hope this helps cheers Terry

Can kill rust epoxy enamel be painted over bitumen paint?

Terry Tinnie
Terry Tinnie ·

some paint products have been used on new cars from the factory over bitumen paint however I believe if any impact on this surface will crack and flake the paint. I also believe there are porosities in bitumen paint that reduce the adhesion of any paint applied over it. if it was me, I would use black satin rather than gloss to reduce any visible cracks from stone impact etc. Again as I am unaware of the type of bitumous like paint used for sound deadening on new cars or the ingredients there of, it makes it harder to advise which product to use other than make sure it is quite clean of oil and grease prior to painting. thank you hope this helps.

Why has my Killrust separated into a liquid and a jellylike solid? I have shaken it and tried to mix it to no avail. Can it be used? Can it be recovered?

Charles k
Charles k ·

How old is the spray can,,,,if you have just purchase the item return it for a replacement,,i think the reason why it has gone to jelly is the paint contains epoxy, mybe,,,

as Charles as said, if over two years old then consider the can is out of date for use. also if stored near salt water for long periods then some aquatic organisms can affect the can. my gut feeling is stored too long or if just purchased then bad batch return to store to exchange it. there are activators in the paint that deteriorate after two years and its probably oil floating on top of the main ingredients of the paint. I am guessing it is not spray paint in an aerosol can and in turn cannot be returned to the place of purchase, so if you are going to use thinners just try power mixing and stirring to see if that works or then dispose of the can in an appropriate way as the paint is too old to work.

I just painted a big old steel gate with Wattyl kill rust galvit. 20 min after l finished, it bucketed down, for barely a minute. Qld weather!!
Paint was dry to touch. Should it be affected at all?

Charles k
Charles k ·

I hope not,,,if was touch dry it should be fine,,,,

Terry Tinnie
Terry Tinnie ·

leave it as long as you can from any abrasion. as far as I know it is oil based so should be ok with water after 20 mins usually almost touch dry however humidity or rain might mean leaving it for 24 hours after humidity or rain. should hold ok material data sheets only say don't apply over 35 degrees or under 10 degrees and humidity means waiting longer to dry/fully activate.

I am painting an outdoor metal table. It has a tiled top with a thin wooden frame on it.
I want it the same colour.
Can I use the kill rust on the wooden frame?

Thanks! Virginia

Charles k
Charles k ·

Killrust is for metal only,,,

Terry Tinnie
Terry Tinnie ·

if you wanted to use it on wood then you would need to fill the places that might absorb the paint so just like cars you need to use a body filler of some kind to stop the paint soaking into the wood just like painting fibreglass you need to use an appropriate water resistant primer/filler that fills any porosities or the paint will allow water to be absorbed. There are a number of products for wood that address this issue, just ask your hardware store for appropriate filler/primer. if this is a bit complicated then think about the products that seal wood and then a compatible paint to go over it.

It's fine on wood (and any other surface) providing you use an appropriate primer. See http://www.wattyl.net.au/nztechnical/document-library/tds/wattyl/WA129%20Killrust%20SPEE%20V3_0.pdf

Nearly every colour imaginable in standard colours from Wattyl itself - then you can tint the white base to a few colours like creams, blues, greens etc... See the Wattyl website and navigate to Killrust.
