Amazing, comfortable and affordable
The CX5 has amazing safety features and the best fuel economy on any SUV that I looked into. The car drives so smooth, the stereo has amazing sound and there are some little features that other similar cars just dont have. The smart start option, the clear reverse camera and the USB charging port are all small comforts that make this car the best of all competitors.

Only things I can fault Wish the OEM boot liner was rubber rather than slippery plastic I wish once you turn the i-stop off, it stay off even after you turn the car off and on again. Next purchase will be the CX-9 for more room for the growing family.

Thanks Mazda Australia and Hobart Mazda
We own a 2012 CX5 Maxx Sport 2.2 diesel, with 80,00 km on the odometer. During a recent trip to Tasmania with the caravan, several warning lights came on and we were able to limp into the Mazda Dealer in Hobart. After examining the car, the Service Manager said he would contact Mazda as he felt a new engine was required. The next day his phone-call informed us that Mazda would replace the engine at no cost to us, that is all parts and labour. Since returning home, Mazda have also paid us for our out of pocket expenses due to the delay waiting for the parts to come from Melbourne and then for the work to be carried out. Many thanks to Hobart Mazda, especially the Service Manager and to Mazda Australia.

Enjoyable but not without fault
Performance, handling, noise levels - meets expectation.
Drivers seat adjustment is manual on this model and not electrical. Height adjustment needs to be done with driver out of the seat. With height adjusted to max, it is not easy seeing front corners of car thus making parking clearances difficult to gauge. Small windows at rear of car (now common to most UVs) limits view when reverse parking. I am 177cm tall and my wife is a little shorter. Neither of us had this problem with our Mazda Tribute 4wd.
Realibilty and running costs are as expected. Auto shut down of engine while iddling does not save a lot of petrol and can become annoying - often turned off.

CX - 5 Excellent family car, with fun factor!
Mazda CX-5 is a medium SUV, that comes with all bells and whistles at the higher end of spectrum like GT and AKERA badges.
It looks good ( I know looks are subjective. But if you see how many are on the Aussie roads, you know there is a considerable number who agrees with me). The interior is great compared to most other Japanese brands : instead of quirky cheap plastics has good soft touch leather/ Fabric/ rubber mostly, that fits neatly. Space is practical and adequate for a family of 3-5 members with luggage. Ride is smooth, but fun too. T...Read more
he suspensions are hitting a sweet spot between firm and buttery, with tightness around corners with minimum body roll (I am referring to SUB standards, not comparing to a jag or a M3). Steering is accurate and weighted well where you know what’s exactly happening beneath you. The chassis always feels like it could handle way more than what the engine would throw at it. If you buy the diesel twin turbo the engine is just having descent torque at low revs (420Nm) with 129 Kw of power, most of which arrives around just the right rev range. It is no ferrari but certainly fun to drive with more than adequate punch for a long drive. I think the diesel mixing with engine oil problem must have been sorted as I did not have any unpleasant problems during my ownership till now- I do most of my driving along highways. But last year where mainly it did short distances for about 20000km when my wife used the car, no issues noted. Drivetrain is great. Gear box is never shy to down shift when you need it, but is smooth and efficient along long cruising. Way better than CVT tunes for fuel savings. The BSM and LDW works just fine, newer over intrusive; but the automated braking (SCBS) is a hit and a miss. Mazda says you can't activate it under normal conditions. I feel the system on Subaru and Volvo are much superior. You could drive right in to a wall and SCBS does not seem to get activated. ( I hear the newer versions are better).Similar opinion? Perfect suv for the retired couple
Love the Mazda SUV. Took a while to get used to the reverse camera but it's a great safety addition to the car. Very comfortable seats and ample leg room. Our previous car was an Aurion which sucked up the petrol, but the Mazda CX5 is a great economy car and we get much more mileage for our dollar. Really enjoy driving it and will certainly go for the updated version when needed.

A good sized SUV for the family runabout
The Mazda CX5 in not a nippy car as it is geared low. However the benefit is excellent fuel economy as long as you pick the lesser petrol engine and a manual. On some long trips I get about 5L per 100km or better on RON95 E10 fuel. For urban cycles about 7 to 8 L per 100km. I have had no mecahnical issues over 5 years and 50 000 km.
The car sits high like any SUV and travels well on dirst roads even as a 2 wheel drive. It is great if you have hip problems as its not hard to get in or out.
The gear inside the car is sufficient. It has...Read more
everything you need. However the fabric seats after 5 years are starting to fall apart on the driver seat. The safety belt also gets stuck on the plastic moulding requiring monitoring or you may think you are strapped in but in fact slack in the belt could be loose! Mazda was not keen to do anything about it. There is a good sized carrying capacity and the back seatrs fold down. However opt for the CX9 if you want to do carting of things like matresses. I would buy another.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Easy SUV to live with, but beware of Mazda Service
After 40,000km this SUV has proven to be a reliable, efficient vehicle.
We're in rural northern NSW and needed a vehicle to negotiate a rough driveway with the occasional trailer towing capability and the diesel in the CX-5 makes that doable.
It is comfortable on road and the diesel engine has plenty of torque (note that it is a twin-scroll turbo NOT a twin turbo motor as the description says). Maybe I drive hard, but fuel consumption is around the 7.9l/100km mark.
The dash layout and switchgear is all well laid out and easy to live wi...Read more
th, however the seat fabric seems to attract dirt and we stumped up for the expensive but durable Mazda neoprene seat covers. It only has a space saver spare tyre and the original Yokohama tyres seemed to attract nails, which was a bit inconvenient. They were replaced at 35,000km with some Michelins which are quieter and we're yet to have a puncture.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Now 6 years old and still going strong.
2019 Update.
My CX5 is now 6 years and 60.000kms old and I am still very happy with my purchase.
We have done a bit of travelling in the Cx5 and find it's very good on long trips. The longest trip we did was 4400 kms touring the North Coast of NSW and out Eromanga in South West Qld to see the dinosaur bones.
The upgraded leather seats have definitely made it more comfortable and the change to Pirelli Scorpion tyres has made the car a lot quieter.
I use DPF cleaner in the fuel every 3 months and change the oil every 6 and 12 months with NRMA.

one of the best cars ever
Before buying Mazda CX5, we had a Toyota ascent sedan 2004, which was ok.
it took us a while trying to find a good, reliable, modern car, with updated features & accessories. we were looking for a nice looking, affordable and comfortable SUV with a good acceleration and well designed interior and exterior.
so we excluded the Toyota because they were still old designed, never changed since 2000.and we excluded the ford and Holden and Mitsubishi because they did not have all what we looking for, and we ended up with two choices the Mazda and Je...Read more

Good but could have been very good
Likes, build quality, Styling,
Not so good - 2.00L FWD model not powerful enough. If you enjoy driving and if your drive is more than just school and office runs and not simply going from point A to B, do your self a favour and go for the Maxx Sport or higher 2.5L AWD model.
Could have done better by offering, digital speedometer (there is space in the dials), DAB- Digital audio, rear air vents, and most importantly a central lock button and follow me home headlights. Also could have improved the overall dashboard and cockpit layout.

Transmission Issues
Transmission - When braking to stop brakes shudder or brake pressure pulses, on acceleration the transmission lags and jumps into gear with a jolt
eg. I was braking coming into a round about, normal brake pressure, a car was coming into the round about to my right so I slowed further preparing to stop, the car to my right indicated and turned left, I attempted to accelerate through the round about, the car failed to respond and then seconds later reacted, jolted into gear lurching me forward into the round about, by this time I had lost all mo...Read more

Ok but be careful of the paintwork
The Mazda CX-5 is a good car with exception of the paint work, seems to be very thin with not a lot of clear coat.
We had bird dropping on the vehicle for about 5-6 hours which blistered the pain work.
Mazda would not honor the warranty regardless of the short time then droppings were on the vehicle so be careful if you get one to get the paint protection or remove the dropping as soon as you see them.
Another problem is the service costs, they are a lot more then comparable small suv's.

Diesel Oil level rising issue unresolved.
We purchased this car brand new. Our oil level rises due to diesel getting into the sump from the regeneration feature. We have contacted mazda Australia and our dealer about this numerous times. We got a computer update and also a new dipstick with a higher X mark. (thanks mazda. Now I can fit more diesel in my oil) This did not fix the problem. We continued to argue with mazda Australia only to be made to feel it is our fault as our driving habits could be causing the issue. Taking the car on long trips frequently did not fix this issue. Also...Read more
we were told we would only need a service every 12 months or 10,000klms. That'd be nice. We do 5,000 in 6 months and the oil level reaches the x mark on the dipstick within this 6 months and we are required to have the vehicle serviced. Our oil level unknowingly exceeded the x mark at one point. We contacted mazda and were told to take photos, drain a small amount of oil out, retain the oil for the service technicians and bring the vehicle in asap. This is a 2 hour drive for us to mazda mackay. We did as advised and were told we had to pay for a service. Nothing ever come of this issue. We got no resolution or solutions, just a bill. We also took the car in especially for a Mazda rep to check out the car. Once again no one contacted us back to inform us of their findings. This car is deadly dangerous if the oil exceeds the x mark unknowingly (not to mention how bad it must be for the engine). The engine will self destruct. Anyone reading this google 'diesel engine runaway' do not buy this as a family car unless you are prepared to take the risk.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

iStop Functionality Problem
I've purchased cx-5 in Nov 14. After 1 year i started having problem with iStop Functionality. This might seem odd but during the drive my iStop functionality stops working and all of a sudden the diesel consumption increases..
The iStop does not comeback till 10 mins and the engines seems to run faster. I don't know if it's just my car or is another issue with CX-5. Just for comparison the average has gone from 6.7 to 7.5 ltr/100kms.

Loving this car
Coming up on two years and this car has done no wrong. Still cruising nicely. No troubles. Felt a slight bit sluggish just before the 40,000 service but was fine after. The only minor incident was when the sat nav started going a bit crazy but was quickly fixed with an update via the SD card. I hope this good vibe continues.

Good vehicle spoiled by Nav system
The handling and acceleration, braking etc is really good. I have the 2.2 diesel which is a very different beast to the 2.0 l petrol or even the 2.5l petrol versions. Power is readily available and as I do a fair amount of towing, the diesel grunt is invaluable. Fuel consumption is good - I get around 6l/100klms around town and the same in the country when towing about 300kg.
The only really annoying thing is the Nav system - it's a Tom Tom and the worst piece of crap I have ever had the misfortune to experience. It gets you lost! Screen looks terrible, the logics of the associated entertainment system is illogical and that's a pity given the high quality speaker system.

I stop/Battery issue at 2 years
Thankyou for your post regarding the Istop and warning light flashing which has helped me significantly, I have the exact issue with a car the same age, I have had it two years this week. I took it to the dealer this afternoon and his plan is to have the car for 4 hours to pressure test the battery. He reassured me that it wouldn't stop! I mentioned that I had been on the internet and had read that the battery needs to be at 75% capacity for I stop to work which he agreed with. He quoted me $600 for a new battery and I replied that RACQ is $25...Read more
0. His response to this is that it has to be a Century battery. He also mentioned that the batteries only have a 12 month warranty. I pushed for a warranty claim, but that would been having them test it and having to pay dealership rates (which are out of the ball park) if it is not accepted I love my car, but am very disappointed at having this issue 2 years into my "Mazda Experience" Me thinks turning off the I stop and a call to RACQ is the way to go. Back to Toyota in a few years me thinks.1 comment
I have since turned off the Istop each time I drive and have had no more warning lights. Replacing the battery when it is at 75%, I don't think so!

I Stop Failure
Bought my CX 5 in 2012 and like many other reviews had issues with the i stop feature flashing and a warning light on. The dealer informed me that is was a battery issue which they would require my car overnight to investigate. As I could not find a suitable 2 days without my car I put this off until one day my car wouldn't start. My fault I know. I had RACQ jump start my car and drove it straight to the dealer. They performed the test and yes I required a new battery which would cost $600. Luckily RACQ had already informed me that yes a b...Read more
attery for my car was more expensive than normal and quoted me $275 for a replacement with a 2 yr warranty! I informed Mazda of this and they simply stated that they could not match this price - so RACQ went to the dealership and installed the battery for me there. The car does run well and this was the first problem I had with it but just ensure you get that second quote for anything major.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
