My WKH 132 WPS machine is only 4 months old. I am having trouble with smelly clothes especially when using the cotton cycle with Twin Dos. . The only program which washes satisfactorily is Quick Power Wash but this limits load to lightly soiled garments up-to 5 kg only. I believe the problem is the TwinDos product. Has anyone else experienced this issue. Service Tech fine-tuned some settings however problem remains of smelly clothes at end of wash cycle or smell present after first use especially towels.

the temperature of the water has to do with getting bad smells too. in Australia there is a very old school mentality where everything is washed in cold water to avoid shrinkage, if youre able to wash the clothes on either a cottons or powerwash cycle, or any cycle that doesn't have the handwash symbol, then they can take a warmer temperature. id recommend 40 degree washes for pretty much anything that isn't a dekicate item. 40 degrees is barely warm and wont damage clothes but warm enough to eliminate unwanted smells. think about having a shower in cold water only forever and that's how youre washing your clothes.
other alternative is that you may need to adjust the dosage of your twindos, and give the machine a descale and a clean on 90 degrees at least once a month as gunk tends to collect in the pipework and around the drum in places you cant see. hope that helps a bit;

Why am I getting "Twin Dos maintenance" message every time I start a wash? I have never used twin dos liquid compartment, I manually use washing liquid and this message started displaying after the machine was one week old. I do not have any cartridges in the twin dos compartment and can not find anywhere to turn this message off, the only way is clicking through the arrows every time (very inconvenient). Has anyone else had this problem? and is there some setting I can turn on so the machine knows that I am not using the twin dos?

Hi there, during the commissioning for the machine the twin dos would have had to be set up, after that and regardless of the twin dos system being used after that point it requires the maintenance to be carried out at the regular intervals as determined by the software. It’s in the problem-solving section of the manual. You can find the manual for your product online here https://www.miele.com.au/domestic/customer-information-385.htm#p510 . Kind regards, Anna.

Thanks for that Anna, it's a shame that Miele don't offer the canisters for free then if you have no choice but to use them to stop the warning. I have just outlaid another $70 on empty canister to push water through the pipes I don't use to avoid this warning from coming up every time I wash.

My twin dos machine has stopped notifying me when I am low on detergent so I am constantly having to open hatch to check, I have run a maintenance clean & also cleaned where cartridges slot in but this hasn’t helped, when I spoke to meile I was told I could get charged for them to call out even though my machine is still under warranty.
Has anybody else had this issue or knows how to sort it please?

Miele representativeMiele

Hi there, the prompt message informing you that the detergents, UltraPhase ‘1’ or ‘2’ can be interrupted by checking or replacing any of the cartridges whilst the W/M is turned ‘Off’. Each time a cartridge is removed the counter for monitoring the number of uses with each wash cycle is reset. If a cartridge is pulled out, and not replaced nor refilled, this counting is then out of sequence. Consequently, containers will possible runout before the ‘Container 1 or 2 almost empty’ and the ‘Container empty’ message are displayed. If you still need assistance, I'd recommend visiting your local Miele Experience Centre where our staff can assist you, please find locations here https://www.miele.com.au/domestic/locations-447.htm . 2 answers

I don't have TwinDos but i think you do need to run a hot wash at least 60 degrees every now and again so the Hygiene info won't appear Its basically telling you to run a hot cycle to make sure the pipes and any liquid detergent buildup in the pipes are washed away.

Miele
Miele representativeMiele

Hi Hamish, thanks for your question. Yes, this is normal. To maintain the hygiene of the machine, carry out a hot wash using powder detergent at regular intervals. The hygiene info will appear in the display to remind you to carry out a hot wash. In order to prevent bacteria and unpleasant odours building up in the machine, run a Clean machine programme using Miele dishwasher and washing machine cleaner or powder detergent. Is it by design that Twindos uses minimum 50% of maximum dose (which is set in settings menu) ?
For example - if there is 60ml for phase1
machine will take 30ml minimum no matter what program is

2 answers
Serhiy P

I finally got the formula from the service. Maybe someone is interested.

Will Be Dispensed = Dosing * ColorFactor * SoilingFactor * WeightFactor * FactorDUO-WM
Dosing - what is set in the settings menu
ColorFactor: 0.8 for phase 1 always, 0.53 for phase2 if color clothes selected, 1.07 if white selected.
Soiling factor: 0.7 (low), 1 (normal), 1.2 (high)
Weight factor: 0.45 +0 (if load is 0-2), +0.2 (load 2-4), +0.4 (load 4-6), +0.55 (load 6+)
FactorDUO-WM: this is some constant = 1.28

NOTICE: weight factor is minimum 0.45 even for zero load. 1.0 - for max load.

Example: If you load about 3-4kg, using twindos with phase1,2, program cotton, soiling low, color clothes, dosing settings: 48/36
there should be dispensed
phase1: 48*0.8*0.7*(0.45+0.2)*1.28 = 22.4 (ml) (it is 46% from maximum dose for 30-40% load)
phase2: 36*0.53*0.7*(0.45+0.2)*128 = 12.7 (ml)

If you load about 1kg, using twindos with phase1,2, program cotton, soiling low, white clothes, dosing settings: 48/36
there should be dispensed
phase1: 48*0.8*0.7*(0.45 + 0)*1.28 = 15.5 (ml) (it is 32% from maximum dose for 11% load)
phase2: 36*1.07*0.7*(0.45 + 0)*1.28 = 15.5 (ml)

Other programs, like QuickPower, Express 20, Shirts (which is for 1-2kg program) which are made for lower loads takes about 50%-60% more detergents than by formula, even for low soiling which causes overdosing and overfoaming.

I don't know why is that designed this way - but it definately software issue. Maybe it is a bug. I don't know.
I've written a lot to Miele to explain but they ignore me.
No one will use 20mins program to wash something heavy - so why the machine use so much detergent in this mode - i don't know

Also advertising says - it takes as much detergents as needed, but no info how much is needed ))
And for this price machine does not measure dry load. Only calculates water absorbtion.
So it's very inaccurate in weight detection. which means it can't accurately dose detergents.

On practice you can't wash any load with twindos.
You need experimentally setup dosing of detergents which will be ok for some amount of clothes which you wash most of the time, like 3-4kg.

If you want to refresh only several t-shirts - just dont use twindos.

If you'll setup it for low loads - it'll underdose high loads.
If you'll setup it for high loads - it'll overdose low loads.

Serhiy P
Serhiy P

There is one solution to use twindos for all loads. Buy two universal containers. Setup one with big dose, second with small one. Use same detergent at both containers. When you turn twindos on, machine asks what container to use ))))

Hi, I've tried program QuickPower which lasts 0:59 (max 5kg load).
Loaded 1kg of clothes. Medium soiling, color. The machine has taken 13 liters for washing cycle. 42 liters total. Also twindos used 50% from maximum dose of washing liquids each phase 1 and 2 (maximum dose which is set in settings menu is for 9kg, right?) So it has taken loquids like for 4.5kg of clothes.
Loaded 2.6 kg of clothes. Same program. Medius soiling, white. The machine has taken the same 13 liters of water for washing part, 42 total. 48% of phase 1 and 64% of phase 2.

Is it normal? Shouldn't it increase water level according to the load? Also looks like twindos overdose a lot.

Loaded 3.2 kg of clothes in Automatic+ programe.
The machine used 16 liters for washing, 72% of phase1 and 50% of phase 2.

When I load zero, the machine still takes 50% of liquids minimum. Is it by design or something is glitching here? Thanks.

And all clothes used were cottons.

How intelligent automatic load recognition system which is present in this appliance works?
How accurate it is? Can it detect small loads like 0.5kg or 1kg ?

1 answer
Serhiy P

I've finally got some document with formula from service. But this formula is for 8kg washers with twindos. Mine is 9kg washer.
Anyway - according to that this machine recognises the load with about 25% step and has 4 load levels.
For example if you load zero or 2kg - it is same first load level. This level is then used at formula which calculates how much phase1,2 to dispense.

In the user manual it is said that machine has automatic system which calculates the clothes load. Service told me this machine does not have load sensor by design. How the machine measures the load then and how accurate? I have twindos set to use miele phase 1 and 2. Dosing 48/36. Program Shirts with max load 1kg. Color. Light soiling. Loaded exactly 1 kg of cottons. How much of each detergent (phase 1 and 2) the proper working machine should use?

Hi Serhiy, thank you for your question. The machine doesn't actually measure the weight of clothes at all. If you would like to know however about how much you can fit into your machine, the instruction manual indicates per cycle the weight of the dry laundry that particular cycle should wash to achieve the best results. You can view the instruction manual online here - https://www.miele.com/pmedia/ZGA/TX2349/10637260-000-00_10637260-00.pdf . Question for Miele Officials:
Here is the manual for this appliance.
https://www.winningappliances.com.au/public/manuals/Miele-WKH132WPS-9kg-W1-Front-Load-Washing-Machine-User-Manual.pdf

It is said there that:
- Water consumption and energy usage are determined by the size of the load.
- When smaller amounts of laundry are washed, the automatic load recognition system will reduce the amount of water and energy used.
- The washing machine has fully electronic controls with automatic load recognition. It takes in the right amount of water required for the programme depending on the amount of laundry and its absorbency rate.

If Miele says "Hi Serhiy, thank you for your question. The machine doesn't actually measure the weight of clothes at all."
Does it means that company LIES to its customers ?
Or what actually means " the automatic load recognition system "

And why in service menu in this appliance there is "calibrate load sensor" option which asks to put 5 kilos in the drum? (which in my case says - sensor is broken, after calibration)

Hi Serhiy, thank you for your question. There are many variables that determine the amount of detergent dispensed through Twin Dos and you could not apply a simple linear. Just as a quick example, the set amount dispensed for heavy, normal and light soiling can be adjusted by yourself and the selections made regarding the level of soiling and whether whites, coloured items etc. are being washed will also change how much is dispensed from each container (with Ultra phase 1&2). The unit is also making assessments of the load during filling that will also help determine the correct amount dispensed. If you have any further questions, please call us on 1300 464 353. Does it mean I can't wash low loads as several t-shirts using TwinDos system as it'll overdose ?

Hi Serhiy, If you see foam/suds on your clothes at the end of a wash programme using the TwinDos system, please ensure the correct programme is selected for the type of clothing and the correct level of soiling is selected. If you continue to see foam/suds on your clothes at the end of a wash programme using the TwinDos system you can adjust the amount of UltraPhase 1 & 2 dispensed during the programme. See the operating instruction for details. We recommend you decrease the amounts by 10% for both UltraPhase 1 & 2. You can decrease the amounts by 10% increments until a satisfactory result is achieved. If you are still having an issue, please contact 1300 464 353 to book a service call. Kind regards, Miele.

What do you have the phase 1 and phase 2 set at? The machine has them set at 48ml and 36ml respectively. This should sufficient for the water hardness here in Australia, unless you leave in a higher water hardness area. You can also increase rinse effectiveness by going into the settings menu and selecting max rinse level.

Serhiy P
Serhiy P

An update:

I live in the area with very hard water.
Had 48/36 setup. Used maximum water level for rinsing in settings. It didn't help.
Then I measured how much detergent it actually use. Even with empty drum it used about 30 phase1 and 15 phase 2 grams (twindos color mode, express20 program).
And In express20 program there is only 1 rinsing cycle so I should dispense very little. User manual says this mode is only for low portions of clothes only.

I was wondering how much actually grams the machine should dispense and what is the precision of load measuring. Didn't find this info yet :)
For example if settings has 48 ml per 9 kilo for dirty clothes (I suspect)
It means 48/9 = 5ml per 1 kilo. Then why this machine takes 25-30? ))

I suspected it just doesn't measure actual load or dosing motor adds much more which was less probable, but no errors on display.
So I called a service guy. He connected his laptop the to the appliance through optical interface (front panel) and we were able to see all sensor values in real time while machine is working. It was noticed that actual load size was always zero.
Then the guy entered service menu and there was load sensor calibration option.
Machine asked to place 5kilo in the drum. After guy loaded the drum with 5 kilo, machine showed a message - sensor defect

Hope the appliance will be replaced :)
