Same issue with all Phillips irons...
I have had a few Phillips premium irons over the years, and love them for the most part. I use filtered water in them, and they are well looked after. They generally last 5-8 years and then have issues with the drip-stop system. It's a metal disc designed to 'buckle' with heat and function like a valve once the iron reaches a certain temperature, letting the water flow and become steam. After time this system fails, the iron leeks water at lower temperature as the water cannot turn in to steam before the heat builds up.... My latest iron (4875) has just reached the same point in its life and the water leaking (during warm up) is tripping the household earth leakage device (RCD)- granted only occasionally but annoying....
Purchased in July 2021 for $150.00.

Getting more and more disappointed in the Philips Irons
We have had a number of Philips irons since getting married almost 15 years ago. They always come highly recommended thru choice. We have had to replace 2 due to dropping them on the tiles (they aren't made of rubber lol), But the last 3 have slowly lost their heat after about 2 years and the one we have now has just stopped getting any heat at all and it would be barely 18 months old, the blue light comes on momentarily and then off, with no heat! For the price I am paying I expect a whole lot better and am thinking of another brand.
I really hope the 2 I bought at the same time as gifts for friends don't do the same thing.

The settings dial broke off.
We have had this iron for 12 months now and it irons our clothes really well. The ionic steam function is great, although it's a thirsty iron. Recently the temperature dial popped out and now the setting is stuck on high. We'll have to now arrange for the iron to be repaired.
The ionic steam function is great
The iron is a bit on the heavy side and the temperature dial broke off.

Well worth the price
I have had this iron for almost a year and it's fantastic. I was using an older Philips Azur model that was quite a few years old, but it had started causing electrical problems so it was time to upgrade. This iron is at the higher end of the price range but if you can afford it, I highly recommend it. It has cut down my ironing time significantly and does a better job than my old iron. The iconic steam function really does make a difference to heavily creased clothe, although the button is in a really annoying spot on the handle - I often turn...Read more
it on without meaning to, but I still love this iron! It is quite heavy so it may not suit people with an injury or those who want something light, but I'm happy with the extra weight as I think it helps with ironing out creases. It does everything well, including cargo pants, polyester dress trousers and heavy cotton business shirts (my husband works in a courtroom so his uniform has to be spot on). I'm sorry to hear that other people have had bad experiences with this iron, maybe they got a dud straight out of the box. I've been fortunate to have no issues with mine. Has reduced my ironing time, nice big water tank, iconic steam makes a difference to very creased clothes Iconic steam button is positioned in an awkward spot and can be turned on accidentally, but no big dealSimilar opinion? Not happy
For approximately 8 years, I have always purchased Phillips irons as they seem to have the best heat settings and I have been more than happy. I knew my favourite old one was on its way out so when this model came out on special and being a more expensive model, I purchased it for the future. I began using this one about 3 months or so ago and have to say I have been really disappointed to say the least. Right from the beginning, It dripped water over the clothes so had to have the steam setting set on a minimum but persisted with using it b...Read more
ut had decided to return it. Then 3 days ago, the cap on the water filler snapped off for no reason. I am taking it back today to swap for another model or another brand. I love that the Phillips irons are nice and hot Leaking waterSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

So far, so good!
This iron replaces old Sunbeam and Philips irons that over the years became more and more prone to cutting off the house power whenever they made steam or after refilling. Despite some bad reviews, but because of some 'excellent' ones, I bought a GC4875. The bad reviews seemed to be mainly poor quality control, with irons being almost useless out of the box. I figured I could quickly determine if I didn't have a good one within a few ironing tasks, and swap it if it wasn't.
It seems I have a good one. Despite being suspicious of the 'silly s...Read more
cience' that marketing departments feed us, 'Ionic Stream' did seem to be plausible physics, so I went for this model as a lot of heavy linen finds its way into the laundry basket. Previously we've used a squirter bottle of water to pre-soak the linen before ironing, however the GC4875 managed a basket full of linen without even using its built-in water squirter. Granted, the steam and heat were turned up full and the 'Ionic' button was on the whole time, but it worked surprisingly well. And even better, it didn't cause any black-outs to the house power! The iron is a little heavier than our previous steam irons, but I suspect this is because the base is more substantial. It takes slightly longer to heat up and a lot longer to cool down - turn it off and keep ironing for a couple of minutes with full steam! The sole plate doesn't seem to slide quite as easily as a previous Philips iron, but the heavier base might explain this sensation. The good ironing performance comes at a cost in water usage. On full heat and steam, it gulps a tank of water in about 20 minutes, but there is an abundance of steam - like an old locomotive rolling to a station. I suspect the water reservoir is shallower than it could be to make room for a thicker heating element and sole plate, so maybe a necessary compromise for a self-contained steam iron; the alternative being a two-part steam generator ironing system at probably double the price and finding room to store it. The controls are all where you'd expect. The power-on indicator light is at the base of the handle - a bit hard to see. The flip-open filler cap is at the top, has a slight funnel shaped opening and doesn't leak like our previous Philips iron. Annoyingly the cord is about 20cm shorter than all our old iron's which were just long enough for a certain convenient ironing board arrangement - now a short extension lead is needed.1 comment
The top edge of the rubber 'skin', on the part of the handle where the inside of my thumb grips, has peeled and worn away rather sooner than expected for its hours of use. More an aesthetic issue than a serious problem.

Disappointed
Had a Philps iron previously and it always worked really well. When that one would no longer steam during ironing I replaced it with this model and unfortunately from the very first day it leaked from the handle. I've now taken that one back and replaced it with the same model so hopefully better luck this time!
Easy to use and light
Leaked from the handle and the cord is shorter than the previous model I had!

Excellent
Just bought this to replace my old philips iron which is 6.5 years old and it was time for a new one as it's getting on in years. My family and friends only buy Philips Irons as they are the only ones that last and are Quality. This iron irons beautifully and I really like the Ionic steam function as it makes it easier to iron very creased items. I noticed it irons my clothes better than my old one did and even irons out creases the other one didn't do so well. As the marketing puts it, it gives you perfect ironing and it certainly does live up...Read more
to that. I have noticed it uses alot more water than my old iron, though that is to be expected as it has double the steam output when using the shot of steam and more steam when normal ironing. Well worth the money! Quality Made Product! Philips brand Iron! Steam pressure, Quality perfect job of ironing creases out and Ionic Steam function for very creased cottons Uses alot more water, though to be expected with the steam output3 comments

Not good enough
I have persevered with this iron but for cotton business shirts it just doesn't do the job. No matter how hard I press they are never wrinkle free. Very disappointed considering the price. The only reason I am still using it is that I resent having to buy another one when I spent so much on this one.
My advice? Don't touch it, my old $30 one did a much better job, such a shame it stopped working and I bought this as a substitute!
Salesman sold it as the best iron ever so took his word for it.
Expensive, doesn't get wrinkles out well enough.

Never buy again
I just returned the model before this one and swapped to a better model I thought and got it home and not only did it leak from a hole in the base it also shorted out my power.
I agree its a bad product and i will never buy again

Lasted a few months then lost steam
This iron is a replacement under warranty for a previous Phillips iron that lasted a few months. Myer said they wouldn't replace this one again, so it's going in the bin. It steamed OK for a few months then gradually lost output. Usage has been ironing for two plus my wife's dressmaking. She has just pointed out that after an hour's ironing it has used a 1/4 tank water and her cotton dresses are not properly ironed. Even I can see they still have creases in them. When first bought it would use a whole tank in that time. Irons just don't last more than a year these days; you're lucky if you get that long.
Expensive, poor steam output, not durable

Is the iron still working as well as new? Thanks
I'm very curious about how effective the ironic steam feature is for clothes that I cannot run the iron over. Would just try the steam alone instead. Thanks

We have the PHILIPS AZUR GC4875 STEAM IRON. It worked well for about a year and then it started leaking. The water comes out of the flap where you put the water in and then drips down the handle. It started out as a few drops - now the handle is dripping wet within seconds. I feel it is too dangerous to use now as water and electricity are not a good combination and I don't want to be electrocuted! What can be done about this?

Thank you - we rang the number as suggested but they were not very helpful. They just told us to take it back to the retailer, but as we bought it a couple of years ago we can't remember where we bought it. This is a good iron, top of the range model and with a brand of such high repute as Philips we would not expect it to have caused problems so soon. Are you able to provide any further assistance please?

You need to clean it out with the calculus cleaner button at least once and sometimes a few times per month as calculus build up is the most likely reason this is happening, you can also get little calculus fragments coming out if you don't clean it out regularly. Also the water in your area can sometimes have something to do with it, especially in areas with hard or bore water were you are best to use distilled water. Another tip is to always empty/remove all the water from the iron when you are not using it and to steam out the excess water and make sure its all out as this reduces the ammount of calculus most of the time (Though please note you will still have to clean with the Calculus button at least once per month and sometimes a few times per month) it should also protect the irons inner parts and extend its life.
Please note that this problem can happen with any Iron. Can answer this question as used to be a demonstrator for a large brand name small electrical appliances manufacturer and also worked in retail specialising in Small electrical appliances.
