Hi there, Ruth.

Thanks for submitting your question. We'll happily help you with this issue. First of all, it may be that the unit is in Auto-shut off. Please press the steam button again to switch it back on. It may also indicate that the water reservoir is (nearly) empty. If this doesn't help you, we would recommend contacting our product specialists at 1300 363 391. Hi Kevin,

Thank you for your question here. If your iron is left unused horizontally for more than 2 minutes, or vertically (on the heel rest) for more than 8 minutes, it switches off automatically for safety reasons. When this happens, the blue automatic shut-off light flashes. Pressing any button will turn the iron on and it will start heating up again.
After approx. 2 min. it will be ready for ironing.

Please let us know if this has been of help!

Contact the company and they should be in touch. They told me to take my iron to Petersham in Sydney (I live no where near there and they wouldn't let me post it) so I ended up throwing mine out and buying a Tefal iron instead. It works a charm :)

My Philips Azur cordless steam iron leaks during operation AND when switched off completely. The day after ironing it is sitting in a puddle of water. It is not overfilled and it is on setting 2 for ECO ironing. It has tripped the circuit breaker twice. What can be done?

1 answer

Philips S.Philips

Hi PJE, thanks for your question. There could a couple of things cause leakage like you describe. Could it be that the water-level is filled over the 'MAX'-indication? Besides that, we were wondering if the tank is closed properly. You should hear a clear 'click' when closing it.

If this doesn't help, please contact us directly on 1300 363 391. We'd like to see what we could do for you.

Hi. We’ve had our Azur for a few years now as a faithful servant. But recently it’s been dripping water from the rear housing where all the connections are. Occasionally it trips the house electricity. I assume because the contacts have water on. I removed the plastic cover and inside the screws are rusty and it’s like condensation everywhere. Is there a fix? Is it dangerous. Should I get a new one. Thanks.

I forwarded a question yesterday re our Philips Azur GC4865 iron; on double checking today I noticed that when you turn it on a red light flashes twice then nothing. In reading through this site it would appear this is a common problem for this iron. I liaised online with your customer service and they advised that because the iron is out of warranty, we would need to pay to get it repaired. My question is, if there is a fault with this particular model, as appears to be the case by the other questions asked, shouldn't Philips 'wear' the repair costs? The iron wasn't a cheap one and ours has hardly been used (refer to previous question for reason). Thank you

Hi Deborah, thank you for your question. We're not sure what's causing the red light of your iron to flash (and if this is due to a fault with the model in particular), but we can't tell you anything different than our colleagues from Customer Care when it comes to our warranty procedures. If you'd prefer to speak to someone directly about your iron, then feel free to give us a call on 1300 363 391 (Australia) or 0800 658 224 (New Zealand). Enjoy the rest of your week, Deborah.

Hi Deb,
I'm writing this from Istanbul and my Azur Excel hi545 has the exact same problem. When you plug it in the red lights blinks twice and the iron turns off. I guess it's a defect with the safety shut-off system that Philips wouldn't admit. This is my first and last Philips iron

We purchased a GC4865 and in effect it is still brand new because shortly after we purchased a Philips GC9600 Steam iron. Our Steamglide iron seems to have the opposite proble to most others on here. It doesn't release steam automatically. The steam and "squirter" work fine when operated manually by pressing the buttons on the top so the holes are not blocked up and we have cleaned it anyway. We were wondering whether there is something we have to do to operate the automatic steaming?

Hey John, thanks for reaching out to us about this. Only certain types of irons have the possibility to release the steam automatically. If it isn't an option on the dial then your model unfortunately doesn't sport this feature. However if it is, and it isn't working, please do reach out to our customer care team on 1300 363 391 (AU), or through http://philips.com/support/.

Good luck!

That isn't very helpful. If the iron NEVER automatically steamed, then I wouldn't have asked the question. The fact is that it did once work and now it doesn't. The manual steam works when the button top right of the iron is pressed as does the "squirter", the button top left, but it doesn't steam automatically any more. The slider between the button (0-6) has no effect. The iron has been cleaned using a de-calcifier.

The Philips irons are a bit more technical than most. Mine stopped producing steam automatically but worked fine manually. There's what looks like a miniature upside down metal disc inside the iron. Google "Bimetal Disc For Anti-drip" in image search and you'll see one. It has a little bit of oblong metal attached to the plate that sticks out. When the iron heats up then what happens is that in an instant the plate turns from being upside down to being the right way up. (Just like when your brolly turns inside out from the wind). You'll hear the iron doing that when you hear that loud "ding" inside it when it's heated up. That little bit of metal is lifted up by this action and that opens a valve and that lets the steam through automatically.

I noticed a rattle inside mine and eventually a tiny bit of metal dropped out. (The oblong bit that opens the valve). After putting up with it a while I opened up the iron to find put what had happened The oblong bit had been welded to the plate but the plate was severely corroded and that had eaten through the weld and so the metal oblong valve opener had ceased to work and dropped off. There was no corrosion protection on the plate at all. I bought a second hand cheaper Philips iron and removed the plate (which DID have corrosion protection) and swapped them over and the iron works fine.

The absence of adequate corrosion protection on those discs seems to cause these failures. At the very least Philips should provide replacements for them free.
