Just received my spectra s2 and it's turning my milk into foam from the valve. Why is this? Am I doing something incorrect? Thank you!

Hi there,

Thanks for your question! This is actually a common thing and nothing at all to worry about :-) What it means is that there is a bit of air being mixed with the milk as it travels through the valve. It will all drop into the bottle and the bubbles will settle after a little while. If it affects the suction at all please let us know, but don't worry - its really quite normal :-)

Hello,

I am very distressed. I am an exclusive pumper and have been having issues with my pump for going on two months now. I have tried contacting Spectra by email (5 times in the past week) and am not hearing anything back from the company. I do not understand. My pump is under warranty and I recently purchased new replacement tubing, etc. Is there any way to contact other than by email since I am obviously being ignored?

Please help!

I am having the same issue with Spectra customer service in the United States. Nobody will call me back. I have a 4 week old newborn baby and am without a functioning breast pump. Medela customer service has proven to be vastly superior in that they tended to my friend's issue and overnighted her a brand new pump.

My pump is no longer charging after only 2 months of use and I am having the same problem with customer service in the US. I desperately need a functioning pump. It's extremely disappointing that we are all being ignored.

I have the same problem as the last person where the milk is just collecting in the flange. I didn't get any blue flanges with white membranes I got all white memebranes that are rubber. Any help?

1 answer

Customer Service T.Spectra

Hey Jackie,

If you have the white duck valves (single piece) please ensure they are working well. When you clean them, make sure to flush the warm soapy water right through the valve so as to prevent any milk fat "sticking" the edges together. You may find you might need to replace them. Generally we recommend replacing them every 3 months or so (sooner if exclusively expressing or with heavy use). If you are still having issues, feel free to contact us via our Facebook or website contacts and we can help further.

Hello! I just put together the first time the Spectra S2. Everything seems great, however when the milk started collecting it's not dropping into the bottle. It's just collecting in flange. I have checked and double checked all parts. Also googled to make sure I have everything right. Also watched you tube videos. Everything seems in proper order. Please help! Thank you!

Hi Valerie,

Thanks for your question. Do you have the blue valves with the white membranes attached to them? If you do, the white membranes should move when the milk pressure behind them is strong enough to push through. It may be that they are a bit stuck fast. Just give them a wash in warm soapy water, dry them and pop them back on. That should help.

If not, what position are you pumping in? Sometimes you might need to lean forward a little to encourage the milk to flow downwards. If you are leaning back it can collect in the flange a little.

Let us know if you need more help. We have a few videos here that shows how to assemble everything and cleaning tips too:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHd0pbLlW6GtJCEkEyFpSYg

Hi!

I have had my Spectra S2 pump for a few weeks now (in preparaton for the arrival of our baby). When I first received the pump, I tried it out and had no issues whatsoever. I was even surprised by how little discomfort was caused by the pump. After the initial trial, I placed the pump back in the box for safekeeping until baby arrived. However, I decided to try it again today and the pump will not turn on. I have read multiple forums and reviews trying to solve the problem, and I have also made sure I was hearing the "pop" sound when plugging in the adapter. Still nothing. I am now very worried about not having a working pump when baby arrives, which could be any time!! What can I do about this?

Hi,

Hi Kash,

Thanks for your question. Often when you have trouble with suction or getting milk out, it can be a simple shield set up issue. You can check out our video which shows correct set up here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbAEIWa0P6I

It sounds as though you may be based in the US by what you mention about getting the pump via your insurance company. If that's the case, and you are still having trouble, I would advise you get in contact with Spectra USA - as we are Spectra Baby Australia and as such the pumps are the slightly different when purchased from us.

I received my spectra S2 3 weeks ago . I believe I have assembled it correctly but the suction isn't enough to be "hands free" I have to hold in place . As a result I'm only pumping one side at a time . What are possible causes ?

1 answer
Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Julie,

Thanks for your question. It is absolutely normal to need to hold the shields in place while pumping. In order to double pump one handed, many Mums use their right upper arm to hold the right shield in place, then use their right hand to hold the left shield in place. So the right arm ends up across the body holding both shields in place. Does that make sense? That then gives you the left hand free to stop and start the pump, drink your water etc :-)

Give it a try, it does take a little practice to feel comfortable. If you still have trouble, you can always email or Facebook our customer support team and we can help you further.

Hello,
I've had the spectra 2 for one month now and it is only turning on when plugged in? Is my unit faulty?

1 answer
Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Kellee,

Thanks for your question. The S2 pump needs to be plugged in to use it. It doesn't have a rechargeable battery. If you are referring to the S1 pump (its blue) with the rechargeable battery - then the most common issue we have experienced with pumps not switching on or charging is that the Australian adapter isn't fully pushed into the charger. It does require a little bit of elbow grease the first time, but you will hear a loud click when it has been pushed down all the way. Sometimes you may need to push the adaptor right off and click it on again.

I have been using my pump regularly for a little over 3 months. ( about 3-4 x per day while at work) I have felt like it has sounded like it is working a littel harder the past week or two. Today when I plugged it in to charge it I noticed it was making a faint clicking sound. When I went to use it again the batter ws even lower then before. I tried pllugging it in and turning it on and it wouldn't turn on. I am starting to freak out a bit as pumping is an essential part of my baby's and my day. I don't think the battery should have worn out this quickly. Any ideas?

Sometimes when I pump, the membrane in the back flow protector sticks to there protector. Does this affect the suction quality?

1 answer
Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Wei Wei,

Thanks for your question - its a good one!

Often if the membrane inside the backflow protector is starting to stick to the outside shell, it can be an indication that it has some moisture in it and needs a clean. Give it wash in warm soapy water, rinse and allow it air dry. If the problem still persists then it may be time to replace the protector - as that could indicate the membrane is worn. If the membrane is worn, then that will start to affect your suction.

If you'd like any help with troubleshooting please feel free to email our customer support team, or message us on our Facebook page, or even give us a call. We are always happy to help.

Hi! In my sleep deprived state, I attempted to pump but I forgot to put the valve piece in!! I was wondering why the suction wasn't working right but didn't realize what I'd done wrong until afterwards. Could I have done damage to the pump by "overworking it" without the valve piece in?

1 answer
Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Angie,

Ooops! Us sleep deprived Mums do stuff like that all the time hey? :-) When you say the valve piece, do you mean the blue valve with the white membrane attached to it? Or do you mean the backflow protector? If its the blue valve head and membrane, then no harm will be done, I just doubt you will have gotten any suction at all! LOL

If it was the backflow protector then that is a little more of a worry. It protects the tubing (and pump) from milk or condensation getting into it - making it a closed hygienic system. If no milk or condensation got back into the tubing or pump, then it is likely ok. Did you notice any liquid in the tubing?

If you'd like to contact our Customer Support team we can give you some further advice if I haven't managed to answer your questions here. You can find us on Facebook, our website or email.

I just purchased my pump yesterday and used it twice so far. I noticed a clicking sound. I'm not sure that is normal being that it's suppose to be super quite. It does make that cat purr sound like everyone says. But it also makes a clicking sound as I'm pumping. Also, I noticed no difference (increase) in the suction level. My boobs are sore and still sore. I ordered a 21mm breastshield as the 24mm seemed larger than my Medela 24mm. Is my pump defective? Also noticed the ax adaptor that came in the box is black and not beige, shown in the pictures and videos. Is there a way to trouble shoot it. I purchased my S2 from Amazon.

Hi Katiana,

Thanks for sending through your questions :-) It sounds as though there might be some issues in the setup of the pump, which should be easily rectified for you. You have contacted Spectra Baby Australia via Product Review, however we don't sell our pumps via Amazon, so I suspect you are based in the US?

There are a few subtle differences between the pumps made for different markets, so you would be best directing your questions to Spectra USA, or whoever you purchased from, as I would not like to give you the wrong advice.

I have been using the spectra 1 for about 3 weeks daily. It worked really well until I tried to pump both breasts at once. I prefer doing one at a time, and I replaced the small cover on the second spot for the tube. Now when I use it I can barely get 1/4 ounce, whereas before I was getting 2+ per breast for 5 minutes of use. How do I fix this problem?

1 answer
Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Sasha,

Thanks for your question. This sounds very much like an accessory issue, which is very easily solved through some basic troubleshooting, as it's quite often either the assembly or one of the components that are the culprit.

The first thing to double check is that the valve heads and membranes are working correctly, as this is usually the first thing to impact suction.

Can you please make sure that the membrane is laying flat against the valve head, and place it into your mouth and suck on it firmly? What we are trying to work out by doing this is whether any air is coming through. If there is air coming through, please remove the membrane and then reseat it onto the valve, making sure it is completely flat against the valve head with no holes visible. Please try again and see if any air is coming through. If air is still coming through, we would recommend you replace the membranes.

Sometimes you might need to reseat the small white silicone membrane a few times to get a good seal.

If you continue to have trouble after trying this, please feel free to contact us via Facebook, or our Customer Service email [email protected] and we'll help more.

I've just bought two valves to replace my older spectra M1 valves. However, the new ones don't seem to have any openings for the milk to flow out. Is this normal or will the milk still flow through once I start pumping?

1 answer
Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for your question. We have two types of valves available. There are white duck valves, which are a single piece. These have an opening that appears closed (like a ducks bill) and it opens up when there is milk inside it. If you squeeze it on the sides it will also open.

The 2nd type of valve we have is a blue valve head with a white disc shaped membrane. The white membrane goes onto the blue valve, and the milk is pushed through the silicone membrane during pumping. When it is first attached it appears sealed, but when pumping that's where the milk comes out.

I'm unsure which valve you have, but hopefully that clears it up for you. If you need more help, please feel free to contact us again.

Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Erica,

Thanks so much for your question. This can be a common issue when your parts (especially the membranes) are beginning to wear. We recommend the valves and backflow protectors be replaced cyclically.

The valves about every 3-4 months
https://spectra-baby.com.au/product/spectra-valve-head-membranes-set-2/
or
https://spectra-baby.com.au/shop/accessories/replacement-valve-premium/

The backflow protectors about 6 monthly.
http://spectra-baby.com.au/product/backflow-filter-premium/

If you pump more frequently, such as exclusively expressing, you may need to replace the valves about every 6 to 8 weeks.

If you have had your pump less than 3 months, or have other questions, please get in contact with our Support Team and we'll be able to troubleshoot more specifically for you. Please email [email protected] or PM us on Facebook and the girls will be happy to help out further :-)
