I will never buy another Subaru
I have my Forester for 4 years under lease and had it serviced by a Subaru dealer on time every time. At 98 000km I was informed that the head gaskets were leaking and need to be replaced. This was done at a a Subaru service centre. I contacted Subaru Australia to be told that this is "normal wear and tear"...... Sorry Subaru but that is complete rubbish. After 40 years of driving and having owned multiple cars 98 000km is not "normal" for head gasket replacement - frankly it is either a design fault or my car was a lemon.

Our 3rd Forester
Including my mothers forester this is our 4th one. I have had it brand new since 2008 - XS auto. As it ages I find that I am appreciating it more as a quality fun vehicle.
Sure there were original faults to my car - the rear cargo door kept overslamming causing its paint to come off, the odd light or part needed to be replaced but that is the benefit of a 6 mthly service cycle. My biggest gripe is that its fuel economy is not competitive - 13-14 l /100 km.
But I lug cargo, carry kayaks and take my bike everywhere - this subie is my life. I love her and hope to drive her for a few more years.

MY09 XT premium
First of all MY09-MY11 are the same give or take a few options MY12 onwards are different .
Secondly I don't know how or why people waste their time on the non turbo model the turbo xt barely had enough grunt looking at a td05 16 replacement for the stock td04 turbo which runs out of puff way before red line.
Great overall car take it to the beack from time to time and does great and beats most cars of the line 4 speed auto is not the best and a lot of squeaks and rattles

I was disappointed ... BUT
When I bought my XS Premium, I was slightly disappointed at the plastic like instrumentation. Would have loved the Red Tacho of the XT. Also the metal skin of the car seemed very thin and the doors would close with a 'clang' and not a 'clunk'.
Having said that, there is nothing else negative to say about this car. It is a beautiful car to drive. The missus and I recently travelled to 7,000km trip to SA and back with 4 adults and the drive was great. It sat us comfortably and even after a long days drive, I came out of the driver's seat...Read more
without the usual back ache or pain that one normally associates with long distance driving. With a fully loaded car and 4 adults, it averaged 8.6 ltr/100km. We also did some off road driving and it ate the corrugation for breakfast. We had another couple with us in a 4WD and they could not keep up with us in the corrugation. No, I was not showing off or speeding, the car just handled the corrugated ruts more smoothly and confidently. Even when we experienced some 'dirty' fuel at one stop, the car's computer must have adjusted the mixture to compensate and within 200kms the warning lights switched themselves off. I am definitely keeping the Subie and looking forward to towing our first caravan around Australia. I would have given 5 stars if Subaru just improved the instrumentation specs to that of something like the Mazda 3.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Forester clutch is not up to towing capacity
I purchased a new 2012MY12 2.5LX Forester and everything was fine until my clutch completely wore out after 26,000kms and to add insult to injury am told by the Subaru Service Centre that I will have to wait around 4 weeks for a part to arrive from Japan.
At the time of failure I had been towing a box trailer with a known load of 320kgs and a total weight of 620kgs including the trailer. The distance travelled was a total of approximately 10kms along predominantly flat roads and then backed into my driveway.
On a previous occasion I had towe...Read more

2011 Subaru Forester Auto
I purchased a 2011 Subaru Forester XS Model and have never looked back. I love my car, i always put premium when i fill up as i feel it drives better. I have just over 100,000kms on the clock and she still runs great! Fuel consumption is great if you are not heavy footed. I have been off road and she handles great! Will only sell to upgrade to a new model. Have had no issues

Don't buy, this thing can kill you.
This is my first Subaru, a 2012 Forester Diesel, and bought it because I always believed they had an exceptional reputation.
I was wrong.
1. Power steering sometimes won't engage on startup and unable to steer for a few seconds, potentially an accident.
2. After 60k kms, I'm having alternator issues. Been stranded twice already as the battery gets drained after 30minutes of just listing to the radio with engine off. The alternator wasn't charging battery properly.
3. Worse of all, it stalls too often when accelerating from idle. This is...Read more

I'm having the same stalling issues on my 2013 diesel forester, and indeed it is an accident waiting to happen. Potentially a deadly accident.
I wont be surprised if I see a class action on this issue .

You get what you pay for
This car has all the fruit and is comfortable to drive. Rear passengers would probably prefer softer suspension. Of late when pushed the car feels jerky and constrained which I put down to only doing 27,000km in almost 3 years and the particular filter needing a good clean out. The diesel must be the pick of the engines as tows my 7x5 tandem trailer with ease and runs on the smell of an oily rag. Jeep Grand Cherokee probably better value for money if you want to upsize.
The SAT NAV and sound system is excellent. Fuel economy a plus. Sunroof huge. Feels classy.
Sleeping in the back with rear seats down a little constrained. 6 month servicing intervals = costly

Good and bad
We test drove a number of 4WD around the same price bracket as the forester. In terms of handling nothing matched the forester. It really is nice to drive and felt a lot more powerful than many others. It basically glides uphill which made it stand out from the others. The downside is the fuel consumption, interior is not the best, audio and Bluetooth are very average. However anyone who likes music will usually invest an a new system. It would be better with more leg room in the cabin too (I'm 6'5). Despite these issues we are very happy with ...Read more
the vehicle. No issues with the car after 16k. Would not get it serviced at Subaru as it's really overpriced. We made that mistake on the first service. Would I buy another forester? Quite possibly. Obviously I'd compare with what's on the market in the future however this has been my favorite car to date. We usually upgraded after 3 or 4 years but will seriously consider holding onto it for longer this time. Handling, drive, power when you need it, space, boot is big Fuel consumption a bit highSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Terrible car
Had constant issues with the DPF, the clutch needed replacement, the turbo has a major leak, hydrolic leaks, sump leaks, bushes gone. The Subaru technicians have no idea even when questioned about the DPF. I stated last year that I thought there were issues with the turbo but they said it was fine. It's only a 2010 model. Worst car ever. Purchased brand new.

servicing generally not much goes wrong with these cars. Unfortunately modern diesel engines have these diesel particulate filters which are a constant source of problems especially when only driven around town or on short runs. Diesel engine that run these DPF need to have relatively frequent longer distance drives at higher speeds so they get hot enough to burn off what they filter out so that they don't get clogged up and cause engine lights to come on and at worst a very expensive replacement but the dealers don't tell you that when you buy these diesel cars as they know stuff all about them and just want the sale.A lot probably had to do with how the car was driven......

outstanding
240,000 kms and the only thing that has gone wrong is the drivers side electric window stopped working after about 200,000. Still drives pretty much like new. It's great to drive, handles very well, great brakes - replaced the pads at 170,000 kms and mechanic said they were only half worn.
build quality, excellent handling in the wet and on dirt roads.
carpets are a bit thin, get some mats.

MY2011..nice car, but should have been better.
This car is great value for money...very spacious, good driving position, relatively smooth. Likes a drink, though.
The biggest incentive to drive economically are the awfull thrashy noises coming from the engine when pushed.
It is let down by a poor attention to detail. e.g. Interior plastics are hard and feel CHEAP! The audio system is equally CHEAP and NASTY. Actually looks like something you would expect to see in a bargain bin at a CheapAsChips store! It does the job, but really detracts from the perception of quality of the rest of...Read more
the vehicle. For some reason the audio when using FM radio is hollow and tacky sounding compared with other media. Bluetooth connection is unreliable, finnicky, overly complex and not very intuitive to set up. It automatically defaults to playing media on your phone if it conencts, and there does not appear to be a pause/play button on the head unit...meaning you have to dive for your phone. Which defeats the purpose of handsfree! I have better BT connection and easier set up, and control of my media with an aftermarket $80 device that plugs in through the aux input. Seriously, the factory head unit is a steaming heap of poo! The rest of the car is a delight. Cornering is very flat for such a tall car, and the road noise is relatively well isolated compared with the Mazda 3 Hatch we stepped out of.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Perfect car for a young family
I bought mine second hand with around 18,000kms on the clock and have put on another 15,000 or so and the cat has never missed a beat.
There is some feedback around about these cars being expensive to maintain - rule number one would be to never take the car to a Subaru dealer for anything. What ever extra value you think you are building into the car when you have an "all subaru serviced log book" will be far less than it actually costs to you get the servicing in the first place. These are simple cars - any decent qualified mechanic can se...Read more
rvice them. I chose a manual even though the auto seemed a bit zippier, it also sounded quite laboured and I had heard they guzzled the fuel. The manual trans is a bit clunky I have to say, but not too bad, The main reason I bought the car was for the safety of my wife and baby and for that you cant fault the car - it's solid as a rock and feels very well balanced. You can fit a hell of a lot of stuff in these once the seats around down they are like a small moving van. Even with the seats up they easily fit a pram and all the bits a bobs that babies take with them.3 comments

Disappointing..
Having owned a 91 liberty for several years my partner and I were confident with the Subaru brand but feel that the xs premium is a disappointment... Earlier in the year we had also purchased a new vr lancer and had been extremely impressed with the technology and the price. We had therefore assumed that the technology in a 24k car should be a baseline in regards to Bluetooth, trip computer, range etc. The forester was obtained as a lease so the purchasing and test drive process was a little different to normal. From the time we picked it up we...Read more
noted several improvements on previous foresters friends had owned such as rear cabin space and a slightly less spartan feel but the classic tinny sound and feel was still there. Living on the central coast, the f3 was part of our journey and it was also immediately noted that it certainly did not have the power or acceleration that the liberty had and it seemed to scream constantly on hills. Once home we had a chance to play with the bluetooth and ipod connectivity, The colour Display was easier to read than the lancer, there was no voice control for Either the ipod or calls. the voice works for prerecorded names whereas the lancer uses recognition for both names and numbers and numbers can be done on the fly. Although an improvement compared to the liberty it was soon noted that the fuel consumption was still average, only 5-600ks to a tank where we get 700+ in the lancer (appreciating that the lancer is a 2.0 litre man and the forester a 2.5 litre auto and for the record the liberty was a 2.2 and we were fighting 4-500ks to a tank). And don't forget to close all the windows and the roof before turning the car off. on a somewhat positive note to finish on, we have been on several long distance trips with the forester and despite all our issues, it was quite comfortable for passengers both front and back.1 comment

Subaru Forester 2008 New Model Shocking Eblens Will Not Take Responsibilty
Never ever buy a subaru the quality and service is shocking.
I purchased a subaru from eblen subaru in adelaide in 2008.
Faulty accelerator switch first year.
Within 9 months i experienced random aceleration but they couldnt find anything and suggested if there was something wrong it would show a faulty accelerator switch.
Eventually the switch did fail and was replaced. Since then i have experienced no random acceleration. The switch probably periodically failed and explains why the problem couldnt be detected.
Failure to honour extended warrantee.
When i purchesed the car we believed we had 5yrs extened warrantee that covered the same issues as a normal warrantee.

Best car... Ever
The best, smoothest, most reliable car I have ever owned! So many great things about this car! We needed a car that could fit the whole family in it, go off-road if necessary, be reliable and cheap on fuel. I am pleased to say that our Forester has met all of the criteria and so much more! It also feels amazing to drive!

this car inspires confidence
this is our 3rd forester and sad to say my last - I am very fond of it and like someone who has been wedded to the same make of car for 10 years I feel I know too well its limitations but I see that other reviewers have picked up on these. Despite all of that I must emphasise what I feel are its great strengths - this is a well designed and generally well made car, it feels solid and handles well. When you drive it for long enough you get very used to its throttle, gearing and know how to extract the fastest speeds from it - this is a very reliable car, I am confident of its longevity and will be sorry to trade it in soon.

A real car
This car is fantastic to drive in both city and country. I've had it for 5 years and 118,000 kms and never had any problems with it. It is solid and well-built and holds the road extremely well. Even with 5 adults onboard it has no difficulty climbing steep hills. Fuel consumption is very reasonable too.

Lets be realistic.
When we got pregnant with our first, it sounded the death knoll for my wife's little Celica. We shopped around testing everything from Klugers to Dualis(es?). I have a (really) old liberty, which has made me appreciate both reliability and that additional security and handling that the hallowed symmetrical four-wheel drive can impart. So I kept at her until she bought it.
Our first is now two, the car is running like clockwork, and if it initially felt large, ungainly or unsporty, I recall that we bought it for safety and practicality. Havin...Read more
g said that we actually DID take it off-roading where it performed WAY above any expectations I might have had of what I thought of as a "better-than-most" soft-roader. It was then that I understood that, the Forester is a "real" offroader, and capable if required. For some reason this has made the trips to the shops even more satisfying. On the down-side we still have trouble getting our mixed-mileage below 10.2 per 100kms in the burbs. Also did the Melbourne-to-Adelaide trip (return) and it proved to be quite bearable; even with the little one. So be realistic, ask yourself what you're looking for and you won't be disappointed. A little dissapointing
Looks good, is comfortable but performance above 90 km/h is not great, 4 speed auto changes down to 2nd too readily, some rattles and high service costs (>$300). Traded it in for a KIA Sorento after 20,000 kms.

Hey.
Im looking into buying a 2010 Subaru Forester MY10 2.0D 6 Speed Manual Wagon. It has 285,000 kms on the clock though. Turbo diesel model. Has anyone had any issues with this model? Or has one with similar kms'? Has a lot of km's and thats my only con to the car really! Just trying to see if its worth it or not.
4 answers
That’s a lot of kms and turbos can be expensive to repair and replace. Unless u get the car for next to nothing I wouldnt buy it, it’s a big risk
Also I would suggest that such high KMS would mean the engine would be very old and tired and towards the end of its life, car had probably been thrashed.Definitely worth paying a bit more and get one with lower KMS AND NON TURBO! I wouldn’t pay more than $1000 for it
If highway kms and well serviced, (and the DPF could be a pain on these ( Diesel particulate filter))and if a low price could be plenty of life left. Diesel buyers are typically not hoons, tend to look after their cars, generally. I have seen cars with 200,000 kms that were in incredible condition. Get a independent mechanical inspection, peruse Forester owner forums, then decide.

Hi
I am considering buying a 2012 XT. Does anyone have this model and has 3 child booster seats in the back row? I currently have a 2013 Kia Rondo, but feel let down by many things. It claims you can fit 3 across no worries, which I guess is true. However with booster seats, there is very little room to plug in the seatbelts. I have to do it (and it hurts my hand every time) for my girls as they can't do it on their own. My eldest kept accidentally unbuckling the middle booster seat because she cannot see the buckles when she reaches in.
Can anyone help?
1 answer
Hi,
I don't know as i've never tried it but I do know there is quite a lot of leg room and space in the rear seating area which is why we bought this model as we had teenage boys. The only way to be sure is to measure the amount of space three booster seats take up and take a tape measure with you when you look at one to compare if it is big enough. Good luck.
