Good
A great allround car that is not too expensive to purchase and own, if you sell after a few years you will get a great return on your dollar too! The XT is a peach, but needs 95 Oct fuel as a min, so expensive to run and 12,500 services aren't cheap! The standard features in X, and XS are very basic and there are more 'toys' in other makes, but the Subaru name maeans quality and safety.
220mm Ground Clearance, Subaru Rally name, a neutral good handling
When you shut the door you really think hard that this car has a 5 star safety rating.... So tinny....

Excellent mid sized SUV
My car is a 2010 build XT Premium manual. Purchased it over a month ago as a Subaru demonstrator and have been completely satisfied with performance and value of this suv to date. Performance is outstanding for the price, very comfortable to drive with leather seats, sunroof, sat nav / reverse camera etc. Have recently completed a trip from Sydney to Coffs Harbour and averaged 9.5 litres per 100 km at speeds up to 110kph where permitted. Considered a Mazda CX7 but found the Suby more comfortable, better vision and performance. The CX7 probably ...Read more
handled corners a little better. Also looked at a VW Tiguin but was too small especially in luggage area. Quality finish (apart from hard plastics on dash), excellent equipment level and strong performance for less than $50,000 If driven hard around the city can be heavy on fuel but no where near as thirsty as a CX7Similar opinion? Softer round the edges..and feels it.
Just bought a 2009 to update from the ol' 98 (yes..1998). I used to also own an L series wagon (best Subaru ever made IMHO).
The '09 is a much more refined vehicle, but that is not necessarily a good thing. There is less ability than the '98 to put in large loads without folding down the rear seats. It sits much higher and that makes it feel disconnected from the road and a bit top heavy.
It floats awkwardly, under-steers and is a little unnerving at high speed on rough tracks the way it bounces and wobbles..but is definitely overall more s...Read more

i find the side mirrors are dangerose and hard to use for reversing with a trailer on behind or lane changing on freeway .
Yes, agree side mirrors are very dangerous. Storage compartments complete rubbish. Bad fuel consumption. 4speed g/box old. Still 50/50 whether to sell this car and get older model or try different car... Read more

We have the new 09XT premium. This is our 3rd Subaru and first Forester. We have been very impressed with the new Forester. It has a very large cargo space. Leg room is excellent. Engine is powerful and smooth. Cabin noise is better than our previous Subaru's. It has the best rear vision of any car I have owned to date. The sunroof is massive and gives a light airy feeling to the cabin. The only bad point is the built-in GPS which is more of an annoyance. It has less features than a typical standalone GPS such as traffic, red light cameras, etc.
Overall though the car is excellent and definitely the best value SUV you can buy today.
Cargo space, boxer engine, build quality, performance, leg room, AWD, excellent fuel economy

Reliable, comfortable and easy to drive
We purchased the Forester in 2009 to replace a mazda sedan. The main reason was to get a car that was not too big, but roomy enough to get bubs in and out of the car. Initially we were looking to buy a second hand outback or liberty, but after taking the forester out for a test drive I was sold through its ride, height off the ground and roomy back area (seats and boot).
The doors all open up 90 deg, which is so handy when putting items and bubs into the car. We chose to have the baby seat in the middle of the back seat so it was importan...Read more
t to be able to have good access to reach in to get bubs in and out of the car. Even with the car seat in the middle, there is enough room for two average sized adults in the back on either side of the baby seat. There is room in the boot for a pram plus extras and it is an ok height to get things in and out of. The standard interior is fine - I have had no issues with keeping it clean and it still looks good after 3 years. The lighter charger port and aux port in the centre console is handy. There is also a lighter charger in the boot if you need it. I have taken it back to Subaru Docklands (place I purchased it from) for all the servicing and have had no problems. We added reverse sensors, tinted windows and floor mats as extras.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Better in every respect than superceded Forester and even better than my 2008 Outback and all this in the base model! Fuel consumption so far 9.2 l/100 (in auto), average will improve as car loosens up. Deserves to be a top seller at the price.
Very comfortable, best seats ever in a Subie, great for long trips, quiet cabin, very good sound system with controls on steering wheel, very good driving position and ground clearance, Bridgestone tyres instead of awful Yokos. Cruise control on steering wheel is easy to use, lots of little storage bins.

Quality
It's a great car - drives well, especially in the wet. Not to big to park or get in and out of. Looking to update with some accessories to assist with storage for when I travel. The head rests on the drivers side took a bit to get used to - but I don't wear my hair up much anymore. Overall I love it :)
Reliable, safe and a great drive
Head rests are positioned strange on drivers side - so I can't wear my hair up much. Also I didn't realise the petrol tank would be small.

I love my Forester
We bought a new 2010 Forester X last year and I love it. It's such a great car to drive. My husband has a Land Cruiser and he got in my car the other day and raved about how easy it was to drive and how well it handled. I already knew this of course! I find it to be quite economical on petrol, but then again, I don't do a lot of driving.
The space in the boot is fantastic. We have a large pram which fits in easily along with groceries. The upholstery is hard wearing and the seats are comfortable. I chose the steel silver colour and it never...Read more
shows up dirt (great for me as I loathe washing cars). We also got the Sat Nav included and reversing camera. The SAt Nav is fantastic and the reversing camera is better than the one in my husband's Cruiser. The only downside for me is that we have two car seats installed in the back for our 2 kids, and you could not fit a person sitting between them (not even a small person). Reliable, great to drive, comfortable Narrow rear seat1 comment

An SUV that actually works off road
I bought the 2009 X 5-speed. It's returned 8.2 litres per hundred over 45,000 kms - 20,000 on dirt, a good portion on poor trails in low range. This car is a jack of all trades. It's simple, relatively tough and extremely capable off road. The car wallows a bit when pushed on winding tar compared to a sedan but if you can ignore this, the grip is extraordinary. On bends you can scare sports cars in a Forester. And once you get onto the dirt that soft-ish suspension suddenly makes perfect sense. It eats washouts, corrugations and potholes for br...Read more
eakfast. The ESP is very good. Clearance is good. Entry and exit angles oddly good. The engine has power if you know where - when you get under 3000rpm, drop down. Do this and it pulls like a train all the way to the redline. The low range is nearly good enough (it can't crawl downhill without use of brakes) but you can do things in a Forester that other SUVs only dream about. Dingo Dell, Bald Hill - on stock tyres. The car is also surprisingly good on the freeway and it's oddly economical there, too. I've done Sydney to Ballarat at 120 and averaged 7.6l with 4 in the car. I get my services done at Total Car Care - about 220 a throw. Seats-down load carrying is superb. The car has never broken down and nothing has ever broken and I have shown no mercy whatever. I am on original tyres and there's still 10-15 thou left in them. This car has taken me places it had absolutely no business going - through creeks, mud, sand, ooze, up and down banks - all with no fuss and no problems. This is no car for posers but if you want a mate for a dirty job, here it is. Reliable, affordable, offroad capable, economical, practical, passive safety Seat unsupportive, noises from dash, low range not low enough, plastic bash plate inadequateSimilar opinion? My Forester is the best car I've driven
This car handles like a suv should, I took myself and my son to an advance driving course and we had to use the Forester on the test field it handled the sharp turns like it wasn't even trying and that was with a full tank, and let me tell you the ABS on the Forester is amazing, it had the same stopping distance as a new Hyundai i20 with abs.AMAZING.
Love it all round.
Would have like the Mags and foggies should have been standard on the 2011 model.

Is this car really made in Japan??
My one is a MY10 XS Premium Manual which has only done 7500km so far. It is in black and the paint quality is AWFUL. The paint on this car needs extreme care - always hand wash gentally and make sure you wax it every month. One plastic trim on the rear left door became very loose and buzzed a lot when driving. I had to glue it back in place. Then rear parcel separator makes fair a bit noise.
The tyres are rubbish.
AWD system is really effective, Dual Range is very useful. Good cornering stability.
Build quality. And where the heck is your 5-speed auto gearbox, SUBARU??

This review is of a MY09 XT. Does every thing we want, daily commuter, camping, tows a boat. Supurb snow driving in this, it is so surefooted. This is our first Subaru and won't be the last.
Great performance with reasonable economy. heaps of rear legroom. Has more active and paasive safetly features than older models. The rear vision is amazing compared to other soft roaders.
A little less nimble in the handling than previous models but that the price you pay for roomieness. The stereo I find to be a little hard to adjust for good sound, it seems to bassy at times. Yoyohama Geolandars are still not the best tyres, they are too much of a comprimise and end up not doing anything well.

Some of my comparisons will be to that of the Mitsubishi Outlander which I previously owned it was the 1st Outlander not the current one, also Holden Astra & Holden Commodore. Value for $ - it was competitive with most vehicles of its type and we looked at all of them and I think it is a better quality vehicle than most of them too. Economical - its reasonably economical for a small 4wd althought it is a little hard for me to tell as I have only had this car since being a stay at home mum. close doors etc and when you are on the road (you don't feel like you are blowing all over the road) which I think was a definite difference over the Outlander. Im very happy with how it drives & handles which I also think is better than the Outlander. In my opinion it is an attractive vehicle. The ANCAP safety rating was very very important to me - who doesn't the best possible chance of surviving a crash? The interior is attractive (I think more attractive than the old Forester) and everything is laid out well at yoru fingertips. I have a 1 year old and I can load and unload him with ease (along with all the other junk you carry along with the baby). We do 6 hour road trips atleast 3 times a year and it made the trip that little more tolerable. I really love my new Forester - I've had it for 6 months (8000 kms) now and find it hard to flaw! I have the base model X. Value for $, economical, solid build, drives and handles well, looks good, ANCAP 5 star safety rating, asthetic & practical interior. Highly recommend as a family car. Comfortable on long distance trips. Umm could be a little more powerful however it doesn't really bother me that its not.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

I have a manual XT for about 18months (24000kms) and I love this car. It has tonnes of performance yet the fuel consumption is very good for 4WD of this size. Most importantly it has all the room I need for a young child, her pram and the shopping as well.
Most recently I was involved in an accident where the lived up to its 5star NCAP rating. that it had to be towed, yet the XT had only minor panel damage. It has a simple interior with effort modern stuff to keep you happy, like cruise control and stereo controls on the steering wheel. Overall if you want more luxury features then buy something else, if you want something with lots of performance (remember it does have the engine from a WRX), room, pretty good on fuel, safe as houses and has excellent resale value then the Forester XT is the one for you. The engine (I have the XT which is the turbo model), it has fantastic performance both in city driving and on the highways. It’s stylish for a 4WD. Simple, easy to use interior with lots of room. Lack of Bluetooth connectivity and the handling is a bit soft and floaty but still miles better than other SUV’s.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

This is our second Forester, having previously owned a S1 model, and it won't be our last. This car is a great all-rounder; comfortable, safe & big enough to accommodate a growing family.

There are 3 anchor points in the back and space to fit 3 child seats (apparently you could only put 2 in the Series 2). This is my 9th Subaru over 33 years, I'm hooked! This is a wonderful tourer and handles firetrails with aplomb as well. Safety is tops with great road holding in the wet. And no, I don't work for Subaru!
Oh dear, where do I start? I've got the top of the line turbo, leather, sunroof. Absolutely love it. Great use of space, legroom in the back is better than ever, seats comfortable, suburban and highway performance is so smooth and powerful.
Minor niggles: GPS doesn't show speed cameras or your speed (without going to another screen which can only be selected when stopped and any other screen over-rides it); centre console lid-armrest slides back too easily; not as many hidey holes as the last model.

Love this car!
This is a great car for touring, everyday use and rough roads. It's very comfortable, but is limited on space. We used to have a station wagon, so we're really noticing the difference in what we can carry. This is our first Subaru and we're very happy with it, although we were thinking of upgrading to a newer one last year. We would have only received about half what we paid new though, as a trade in. This was with the Subaru dealer we bought it from new and with an up to date service record through them. Needless to say,we decided to just keep ours.
reliable, fuel efficient, comfortable.
a bit limited on baggage space.

We have had our Subaru for just over a year and I love it (although I have to admit its my first new car). After LOTS of research we opted to buy this because we needed a vehicle with good luggage space, good leg space (for my tall husband), excellent safety rating (because of AWD and airbags) and fair fuel economy for a car of it's size. The only thing we were unpleasantly surprised about was the lack of space for a rear-facing child seat. It is quite difficult for anyone slightly tall to sit in the passenger seat now. Very nice drive. Intend to keep driving this as long as I can, maybe upgrade to a turbo version. Highly recommended.
The new look of the 2008 model. Smooth drive. Love the large side mirrors which gives a wide view and reduces blind spots. The GPS unit with DVD player is an excellent option. Very comfortable back row seats, plenty of leg room. The raise base and large wheels make occasional off road drive easier to handle.
The boot space is smaller because Subaru made the second row larger. It can be a bit of struggle to fit a pram with shopping. The engine is little more thirsty on the petrol consumption. There is no diesel option. The middle back seat a little narrow for 3 adults at the back.

After having a toyota landcruiser, being only 5'2" tall, I have found the Subaru such a delight to climb in and out of...the best of any cars I have ever had! The seat adjusts for good viewing. My husband is 6' tall, and he has found it very roomy to drive, with a good clearance with head height. I have had it from new for 2 years now, and I have had not an ounce of trouble. It's so smooth to drive.
Not too big, easy to park. Light and zippy to drive. Easy to get in and out of.
Could do with a bit more space at the back, for supermarket shopping bags, I find I have to put some on the back seat as well, so it doesn't get squashed.

Hey.
Im looking into buying a 2010 Subaru Forester MY10 2.0D 6 Speed Manual Wagon. It has 285,000 kms on the clock though. Turbo diesel model. Has anyone had any issues with this model? Or has one with similar kms'? Has a lot of km's and thats my only con to the car really! Just trying to see if its worth it or not.
4 answers
That’s a lot of kms and turbos can be expensive to repair and replace. Unless u get the car for next to nothing I wouldnt buy it, it’s a big risk
Also I would suggest that such high KMS would mean the engine would be very old and tired and towards the end of its life, car had probably been thrashed.Definitely worth paying a bit more and get one with lower KMS AND NON TURBO! I wouldn’t pay more than $1000 for it
If highway kms and well serviced, (and the DPF could be a pain on these ( Diesel particulate filter))and if a low price could be plenty of life left. Diesel buyers are typically not hoons, tend to look after their cars, generally. I have seen cars with 200,000 kms that were in incredible condition. Get a independent mechanical inspection, peruse Forester owner forums, then decide.

Hi
I am considering buying a 2012 XT. Does anyone have this model and has 3 child booster seats in the back row? I currently have a 2013 Kia Rondo, but feel let down by many things. It claims you can fit 3 across no worries, which I guess is true. However with booster seats, there is very little room to plug in the seatbelts. I have to do it (and it hurts my hand every time) for my girls as they can't do it on their own. My eldest kept accidentally unbuckling the middle booster seat because she cannot see the buckles when she reaches in.
Can anyone help?
1 answer
Hi,
I don't know as i've never tried it but I do know there is quite a lot of leg room and space in the rear seating area which is why we bought this model as we had teenage boys. The only way to be sure is to measure the amount of space three booster seats take up and take a tape measure with you when you look at one to compare if it is big enough. Good luck.
