My car
The car drives well and is generally reliable. The electronics are excellent, including reverse camera and satnav, as well as aux input. Fuel economy sits around 9L / 100km for city driving. The only issue is consumption of engine oil, which requires a top-up of about 1L every 1500 kms, which is unfortunate.

Lots of problems and poor customer service
Nice car to drive good points stop there. Expensive to repair - air conditioner repair cost $1000 and still never worked well. Alternator belt broke and car had to be towed. Airbag lights appeared on dash, just spent $220 repairing this fault (seat belt tensioner problem). Worst to come. Oil leak due to the common head gasket problem due to poor manufacturing - quoted between $2000-3000 to repair. Car has done 94000ks. Also received a recall a recall notice for a faulty passenger airbag. Service centre not great to deal with - would never buy another Subaru.

Best vehicle ever!
The Subaru Forester is my new favourite car. The driving experience has been fantastic - smooth acceleration, super quiet on the road (even on the gnarly north coast of NSW) and the handling is amazing. In particular, the Xmode has been a great aspect driving on very slippery, muddy roads.
The interior is great. The seats are really comfortable, and the space is quite surprising. The matt finish of the plastic finish is taking me a little while to get used to - can be difficult to clean.
The car is safe, reliable, VERY cost effective and FUN!

Comfort and reliability
I have a 2008 Forester 2.5 xs auto with 70k on the clock. Around town I average 10.4 per 100km and highway 8.2
I have always felt safe and confident whilst driving this vehicle.
Because of the low km and use the seating remains firm and very comfortable, nothing has changed since new. The only items i would like that this vehicle doesn't have would be the latest electronic devices found in the newer,.NAV. B/TOOTH. BRAKE SENSORS and so on. Maybe next time.
Regarding the 2.5 engine, it has all the power i will need to get me safely to my d...Read more
estination. The only thing I am concerned with is the low Tow Ball Weight of 80kg. This really limits the size of the towing capacity unless you spend $1000 and fit a W.D.H. (Weight Distribution Hitch) and a 50mm tow receiver this will allow a 140kg tow ball weight. Very important to get this correct or lose your insurance coverage if you nee to make a claim. Also the Police are checking vehicle towing capacities and a heavy fine for not abiding to the manufacturer's recommendations.KEEP IT SAFE. Well there is not much more i can say about my Subaru Forester as i am still very happy with it with no intension of up dating for a while yet. A TRULY NICE RELIABLE VEHICLE.

Few glitches but generally happy
Leased a MY 2011 Forester 2.0D from new, with the basic specs and the manual diesel motor. Paid out the residual at lease end.
Performance is not extraordinary, but it's not wanting when overtaking, where it's a big improvement over the 2.5 petrol (had that in the previous Outback). If you're a boy racer you won't be buying a diesel SUV anyway. Happy with the handling although not as good as the 2008 Outback I had previously. Do enjoy driving the diesel though. Hasn't done what I would call offroad, a bit of driving on outback unsealed roads...Read more
, such as the Darling River run from Wentworth to Goodooga in NSW, and some excursions on forest roads locally (Sunshine Coast hinterland). The car manages this well and no squeaks as a result. Driving for economy (virtually all my driving is open road) I average around 900 km out of a tank, for about 6 l/100 km, about 6.5 in hillier conditions. At 130k in the NT it was doing about 8.5 l/100 km. The engine has been flawless and hasn't skipped a beat. However I've also been careful to service it within the service interval kilometres. Don't touch a Subaru without logbooks or that hasn't been regularly serviced. Service costs are pretty high, negating any fuel economy advantage for the diesel. The diesel particulate indicator warning light came on on a few occasions, generally only staying on till the next start. This was a bit bizarre as my driving is virtually all highway. The lower control arm bushes split, conveniently announced at the first service after the warranty expired. Normal wear and tear they will no doubt tell you. Well this wasn't wear and tear that happened in the Outback, the two Camrys, the Nissan and the Mazda I had for about 800,000 km before this, with just as much outback driving in all of them. The dealer wanted to do a few other things of dubious merit at the time of the first service after warranty expired, with a total cost of $1,600. Similar experience at the first service after the Outback ran out of warranty kms. Been going to my local dealer ever since and the whole after sales experience with Subaru is my biggest incentive to move on to something else next time. My wife has had light years better service from Hyundai.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

very hard to drive
Have a 2009 manual Forrester. Revs out of co trol every time you have the clutch pedal in. Always have to leave it in nuetral or else! Spoke to subaru and they said its an environmental saving feature and the car is not designed for traffic. Well unfortunately there is not a lot of open roads in the suburbs!

Great Car.
Very Reliable, and a good size not too big like most SUV's also has lots of safety, more than most cars. Interior is practical and comfortable at the same time. Running costs can get expensive if needing repairs outside the normal wear and tare. Generally a good solid vehicle. Easy to drive and responds well.

Did the big Lap.
Great to drive, just like car but can do beach and off-road with decent tyres . I upgraded rear springs as the set-up is not good when towing. It did Cape Leveque, Gibb river road across the top-end and many beach and bush trips. Pulling a trailer and having a roof box I was getting better then 14L per 100K that's good compared to a full on 4WD pulling a trailer.

Typically fantastic Subaru 2.5 litre turbo
Great car in many ways, the only thing letting it down is the boat-like handling mainly due to the front end being so high and the lack of decent sway control.
Simply add an under-bonnet strut brace and decent front and rear sway bars as well as lowering the front end a little and it becomes quite a handler (for an SUV). Stiffer springs help also - note if you lower the back end as well you will lose the auto-level adjust functionality, but it shouldn't be a problem if you install stiff springs front and rear - which is a given if you are lo...Read more
oking for sporty handling anyway. The engine is virtually unbreakable in standard turbo format. Go for the auto trans if you want to get the most out of the turbo for performance and laziness or manual if you intend to off-road (the auto doesn't have low-range capability).Similar opinion? Pretty Good Car
We bought the car at just over a year old.
We found the car to be nice to drive, being an SUV it isn't as good as a sedan, but not bad.
The motor runs nicely, and pretty good for a 4 cylinder.
It tows our small pop-top caravan quite well.
The auto trans is way too keen to drop down to second, even in the country, I regularly put it in manual mode.
Being the standard X model, it is not over equipped, our previous cars were better specced, especially the stereo is a bit ordinary, the bluetooth works pretty well though.

OK but just does not feel "solid"...4* due to 4wd system otherwise 3
Overall an OK car, nothing special in day to day use however offroad the 4wd system really is fantastic. If Subaru would develop a low range with tc option my word that would be very hard to beat. Good fuel figures for the 2.5l engine, some nice quirks included such as reclining rear seats but the dog does not like the hard fixed section on the rear cover. As always go drive one and see what you like/dont like, we bought this as a daily drive and its good for that. Comfortable enough on long journeys too. Our mistake was leather seats.!! had to buy covers to stop the 3rd degree burns in summertime.!

Perfect SUV for CDB and weekends away
Had 3 Subaru Foresters now and they are the perfect car for people living in the CBD and wanting to get away for the weekend . They are great on fuel and parking in the CBD and still have enough space to fit every thing in for weekend trips away .

The S3 2008-12 model is great. Get manual transmission.
I traded a 2003 2.5 manual Liberty RX on this Forester.. I have owned this vehicle for 2 months.
My observations are:
. Forester is a great car in terms of practicality. The S3 2008-12 has the following great features. Easy to get into, easier to mount roof racks on the rails for surfboards etc, rear seats fold and you can sleep in the back if you need to. Great ground clearance. A supple ride that you really notice over speed humps. However the grip and handling is still good considering the 65 series tyres and height of the vehicle. Good fu...Read more

Very good road car, pretty ordinary on rough dirt roads
Another reviewer has hit the nail on the head with this car although a 3 star rating might be a little low (its a pity half stars can't be given because overall 3.5 stars is probably about right). If you value safety, reasonable quality construction and good family versatility, then you will love it. If however, you also want to take in some back blocks gravel roads (Wilcannia to Bourke, Ivanhoe to Wilcannia etc) then you should look elsewhere. These cars are too light in the suspension and will shake themselves to pieces. Dustproofing is not ...Read more
good and one trip down a gravel road and you will have a car that forever rattles. Strangely, the Outback seems to handle rough roads a bit better than Forester but neither of the Subarus feel as solidly built as an equivalent Rav4. In summary, a very good highway only family car, but badly let down by soft suspension.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

100k + and so far so good,.......
Bought my first Subaru Sportwagon in1984. Did 450,000+ klms with no major problems just usual CV joint boots, exhaust replaced. It eventually rusted out but still had original engine and clutch still going strong. Have had Subaru's ever since with no major problems. Bought a MY10 diesel Forester new which now has 105,000 klms on it. Only issue was I was doing too many short trips around town so the dpf light came on regularly. Solved that problem by buying an old Laser hack for short trips and now use Forester mainly on out of town longer trips...Read more
. Dpf light has not returned since using this strategy.!!!! I love the car so much and have no immediate desire to replace it although would like a Subaru diesel with the CVT transmission. I tow a Avan Cruiseliner easily with it. Do my own services at 6000 KLM intervals. Clean oil is the secret to engine longevity especially with Common rail diesels. And don't tell me Subaru's are ugly. All those Korean ones especially are IMHO gross. I find the Forester great in sand and other challenging surfaces. Went up to Craig's hut in Victorian high country without any problems. With a lower 1st gear or low range transmission this would make it a really great off road vehicle.Similar opinion? Subaru XS Premium- Doing very well
We bought our Subaru last year, without any hesitation after selling the 5 month old Dualis +2. One of the reason being some years ago we had bought a brand new Subaru Liberty as our first car and it gave us 18 years of service, thus we had some experience with boxer engines. The XS Premium is going perfectly, it doesn't have a CVT but that's fine because of the 2.5L gutsy engine, very strong take off though it can be a bit thirstier than some others. However no engine can produce power and or speed without consuming required amount of fuel!

Great All Rounder
We purchased an ex government 2011 petrol x 5dr at the auctions with 55K on the clock. Our mechanic inspected and gave it the tick so we got it. Since then have driven from Adelaide to Darwin and across to Cairns and back to Adelaide via Melbourne. The car drives beautifully and behaves well in all road conditions.
Fuel averages about 7/100 on premium.
The good: handles well, looks good, brakes well, steers well
The bad:cold idles at 1500 on start up and takes to long to idle down, can be surgy in slow traffic, does use oil, about 1/2 litre every two tanks. Dealer says that normal, yeh right

Good value
We have had our Forester xs premium for a year. Fuel economy is less impressive than Subaru claimed. The car has met all our needs as family transport and as a smaller AWD replacement of our Falcon wagon. Power is adequate but not exciting. I found the rattle in the rear parcel roller shelf very annoying. We rarely use the sun roof but it is nice to have and impresses friends and family.
We are generally very pleased with the Forester. It ticks all the boxes we needed.
AWD for towing and soft road. General quality is good.
Fuel economy. Black carpets show every bit of dirt.

Good and bad
To start I’d like to say that this is the best and nicest car I have ever owned, and probably the best I have ever driven. There is a lot to like about it, but also some things not to like. Enough not likes to stop me from buying another one. It is now 27 months old with 56,000k on the odometer. The three year warranty runs out at the end of this year and I will be trading it for something else – still haven’t decided what.

Forester, but first diesel. My two previous petrol models were used when I bought them, and pretty good cars. Pros: The finish is excellent and the appointments also very good. Carry space is good, leg room is good. Incredibly good fuel economy – 6.2 L/100k on trips and 6.6 or so commuting to town. Performance is outstanding. When the turbo kicks in it really takes off. Easy for overtaking and it eats up hills. Cons: Ride - The ride is a bit hard and bouncy, and I get a sore back after a couple of hours driving – so better seats would be nice. I am 63, so seats matter a lot now.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Love my car!
Have wanted a Forester since they first came out in late 90's. Bought my first 2012 petrol model in 2013. It had been a demonstrator but had only done 30k,s. Had a new set of 17" Subaru Alloy wheels. Gorgeous marine blue colour. Lovely interior (basic) but so comfortable. Feel so safe in the steel cage surrounding the cabin. Have done several trips from Sydney to Melbourne. No problems. Love my car and enjoy getting into it each day. Only negative is its fuel consumption. Does about 600K on the highway with full tank of petrol, but only about 200K around the city with same full tank. Its very thirsty! but its gorgeous.

Hey.
Im looking into buying a 2010 Subaru Forester MY10 2.0D 6 Speed Manual Wagon. It has 285,000 kms on the clock though. Turbo diesel model. Has anyone had any issues with this model? Or has one with similar kms'? Has a lot of km's and thats my only con to the car really! Just trying to see if its worth it or not.
4 answers
That’s a lot of kms and turbos can be expensive to repair and replace. Unless u get the car for next to nothing I wouldnt buy it, it’s a big risk
Also I would suggest that such high KMS would mean the engine would be very old and tired and towards the end of its life, car had probably been thrashed.Definitely worth paying a bit more and get one with lower KMS AND NON TURBO! I wouldn’t pay more than $1000 for it
If highway kms and well serviced, (and the DPF could be a pain on these ( Diesel particulate filter))and if a low price could be plenty of life left. Diesel buyers are typically not hoons, tend to look after their cars, generally. I have seen cars with 200,000 kms that were in incredible condition. Get a independent mechanical inspection, peruse Forester owner forums, then decide.

Hi
I am considering buying a 2012 XT. Does anyone have this model and has 3 child booster seats in the back row? I currently have a 2013 Kia Rondo, but feel let down by many things. It claims you can fit 3 across no worries, which I guess is true. However with booster seats, there is very little room to plug in the seatbelts. I have to do it (and it hurts my hand every time) for my girls as they can't do it on their own. My eldest kept accidentally unbuckling the middle booster seat because she cannot see the buckles when she reaches in.
Can anyone help?
1 answer
Hi,
I don't know as i've never tried it but I do know there is quite a lot of leg room and space in the rear seating area which is why we bought this model as we had teenage boys. The only way to be sure is to measure the amount of space three booster seats take up and take a tape measure with you when you look at one to compare if it is big enough. Good luck.
