I love it!
The driving experience is just ok, the handling is fantastic. I love the interior, it has a reverse camera but the downside is it doesn’t beep when you are in reverse to let you know you are too close. It’s stylish inside and out, th is another downside with the bootspace...not big enough!

Worst performing Japanese car I owned
This is the worst Japanese car I had. We traded in our 2002 Honda Jazz for a 2012 Subbie XV when it first came out. In the 5 years of ownership I had the following replaced
- 1x CVT Auto gear box in its 5th year ($3400) Out of Warranty
- 1x Leaking front right suspension ($600) Out of Warranty
- 1x Front left control arm bushing failing ($700) Out of Warranty
- 2x Battery wearing out in year 3 and year 5 ($800) Out of Warranty
- 1x CV Joint ($600) Out of Warranty
- 1x Rear Wheel Bearing ($500) Out of Warranty
- 2x Rear boot piston not lifting (Repaired during warranty period)
- 1x Automatic Ignition relay (Repaired during warranty period)
- 2x4 Tyres only lasting 20,000km ($600x2)

Not good value for money
I have now owned my XV 2.0-S for just on one year, so I am doing this review
These are my findings.
The CAR is Totally overrated and overpriced
Under powered also mechanically as well as road noisy
Rides & handles similar to a 1955 Bedford truck
Weird electrics, useless voice recognition and what a ridiculous stop/start mechanism
Good GPS but you have to pay for updates not what we were told
The interior is leather and plastic and not a good presentation
Petrol consumption to your own imagination not what you are expecting
Less boot space than a Honda Jazz/Suzuki Swift, will not fit two small suit cases

Pure Japanese car
The car has good performance especially on semi auto gear, as Subaru XV has Boxer engine which more powerful than others same class. This car is 100% made in Japan where overall had quality of Japanese technology. Interior is very good, plenty leg room for passengers and also plenty boot room for surf board with folding rear seat. Running costs not to bad, 5.6L /100I'm. Overall luv this car good for off road.
Purchased in November 2021 for A$37,600.00.

- Very underrated vehicle in comparison to other common brands.
- A great little SUV.
- Drive one to understand the engineering behind these vehicle.
Definitely recommend one over other common brands.

Meets the mark
This is a dream to drive. It handles well but just a tad under powered, which shows up when needing that extra Acceleration. The gearbox, however, compensates with the correct ratio of engine revs. Extremely comfortable, which alleviates fatigue on a long trip. The only negative thing about the interior is the orange stitching, which argues with some exterior colors. On a trip the economy drops to 6.5/100.

Very happy
Purchased in 2013, have been very happy over the last 4 years (125000 km). Great to drive, running costs are ok, haven't had any major issues so far. One or two minor issues, main one being it always seems to run low on oil within the last 5k before a service is due. Placement of rear vision mirror could have been better.

A great concept poorly executed by Subaru
The car is kind of cute, has an particular style to it and has some appeal in being "different". The vehicle doesnt offer value for money, if you can find $30k of value in this after owning it for a year I would eat my hat. Again the concept is great but poorly executed - motor really lacks power, sound system and blue tooth is an absolute joke, the paintwork very thin, car is quite noisy inside, very cheap feeling interior and the drivers seat must the something they reupholstered from a war time blitz truck. The rear shock absorbers are just ...Read more
shocking, zero control of the rear of the car, rubbish manufactured by Showa, there is an aftermarket KYB shock to replace them with that is much better but still falls short of being very good. The FB20 engine likes a good drink of oil too if you are unlucky, mine goes as it is meant to but can consume 1 liter per 1000km on a hot weather day. The better things, fuel econ can be amazing, the clearance is excellent, the AWD system WILL find traction anywhere, brakes are very good and roadholding up to 100kmh is good but is very much attention seeking after 120kmh if road surface is not PERFECT. Look for a low km XV for about $17 000 if you can, at that there IS value in this motor carSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Perfect Mix
Wonderful car! Absolutely incredible handling with Symmetrical AWD, you have to be going VERY fast to lose control, and even then, not all is lost because the safety and dynamics of the XV are incredible. 5 Star ANCAP, 7 Airbags and the rest make for the safest car in its class. Very strong brakes with good progression, and wonderful light weighted steering makes it an easy car in the city but more predictable and comfortable one in the country/highway. Off-road as with most Subaru's incredibly comfortable and tenacious with grip, you really ha...Read more
ve to push it into the corners before it begins to lose grip. In challenging off-road situations the XV just keeps going, very rough moguls, mud, sand and river crossing can be achieved in this car and it does it very confidently. A very capable car in almost every environment. The manual has good mid range torque despite its 198nm and with the 6 speed manual you can get more than enough power out of it. It's not a fast car unless pushed, but generally speaking is a good performing engine with plenty of power across the range. 0-100km is far faster than the CVT clocking in around 8.0-8.5 seconds. 1st gear is very short, and second is incredibly long making it difficult in the city at times, however out on the highway revs are very low and 2nd and 3rd are good gears for quick overtaking. Interior is dull but incredibly ergonomic and practical, as are the seats. Good support on longer trips, even in the rear, but nothing fantastic. Lots and lots of room for a car of this size, in the rear too there is enough for 2 large adults. Boot is small due to larger space in 1st and 2nd rows, however it is large enough for everyday duties. Capable of achieving 5l/100km on the highway, and about 9l/100km in the city, it is a very safe and easy car to live with. This Subaru says "I'm here to take you dependably, safely and confidently to your next destination... Maybe not in the purest of luxury or lightning quick, but in a very very confidence inspiring spirit" For the money, I would be hard-pressed to find a vehicle that performs so excellently in a mix of city, gravel, highway and off-road environments. It's an absolute perfect blend, and is the perfectly executed crossover. Pretty much no on road performance is lost whilst still keeping off-road capability, space and practicality. Awesome, awesome car from Subaru. Some Cons: * Clunky gearbox, not smooth, however mechanical in function, you always feel what gear its in, and the clutch definitely has a bite to it, just much later in the range.Similar opinion? Hopeless amount of luggage space
I wasn't allowed to test drive away from the seller's selected route. I didn't check the boot space and after buying it found it was impossible to get my grandson's pram in it. The driver's seat isn't as comfortable as my former Corolla. Don't back it into a parking spot as the squared off bumper has been scraped by people slicing it when they cut into park. It is just out of warranty and the mileage indicator has gone berserk showing 570kms one minute, 630kms the next. Up and down like a yo yo. I have had to have the clock fixed twice and i...Read more
t is getting fast again. The manual is difficult to read. I wouldn't recommend this car if you want plenty of room and value for money. Very expensive for what you get when compared with others in this price range. ALSO, they force you to have it serviced every six months or you lose your warranty.Similar opinion? Bluetooth phone connection terrible
2017 just purchased brand new . Pros - drives nice and comfortable . Cons - small boot and my biggest issue is the Bluetooth connection is terrible and people can not hear me on the other end. Subaru service has looked st this and said nothing is wrong . I use for work and need good phone connection so I am really disappointed .

Subaru XV MY17, Manual
I bought a new Subaru XV (Manual) approx. 5 weeks ago and have driven just over 1,000 Kms. I found there was a slight squeaky noise in the back which the Subaru service centre promptly fixed, as the latch on the back hatch door needed tightening. Other than that I have found the car to be an absolute pleasure to drive, with responsive handling, quiet and great average fuel consumption of 8L/100Kms (city driving). This is the third Subaru that I have owned in the last 10 years and can say that I am totally happy with my new XV. The 7" touchscree...Read more
n head unit makes it easy to read the GPS map. The stereo is super clear and a pleasure to listen to. I'm still getting used to the following 2 new features: 1. The daytime driving lights which come on automatically, despite the light switch being off (a safety feature) and also 2. the engine automatically cuts out when idling and when not in gear (the engine restarts as soon as the clutch is pressed). This is another features contributing to fuel economy. Overall I find it's a great, safe and comfortable car for city driving. It seems to grip the road very well in wet conditions particularly around corners. The seat is sufficiently high to make it easy to get in & out of the car. I find it a pleasure to drive.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Did everything soundly
My wife and I had the 2013 model, middle of the range with CVT. In white it looked great and rugged. We saw it as a Impreza with hiking boots basically. My wife was pregnant at the time so we compromised on size because we didn't want to be in the big SUV craze, (but we are now :(). We loved the ride height, getting in and out was easy compared to our previous cars, the thought that we could go off road was good, we knew it was not a 4WD, but the Subaru AWD system is renowned to go further and it could handle bumps and gravel :). And it's a goo...Read more
d car for a couple with 1 child or dog I guess. It does also two 750kgs unbraked. And good safety features. The cons that we experienced were that the Bluetooth audio quality was not the best, so we used it only in spurts, and the phone Bluetooth sometimes had issues reconnecting. It had a really small boot, could not get much in before it was full. It also was very slow between 2nd and 3rd on the CVT...and by slow I mean gutless. It needed the 2.5 or a small turbo in my opinion. The Yokohama tyres from factory only got us about 36000kms, not bad but I probably expected around 50-60000kms. If you are 6 foot or over in height then you may have trouble getting comfortable in the back. Servicing prices were good. All in all it did what we asked, and did it without fuss and was more reliable than our other cars.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Subaru XV S series Manual - Great - just needs a few little touches to be perfect
Purchased a new top of the range S series XV mainly because it is a cheaper than other similar cars from other makers and sits a little higher. In hyper blue it looks awesome, but it also handles well, has nice manual transmission, is very comfortable with good passenger room and a medium sized boot area. Hill-start assist is great too and it has performed perfectly so far (3 months). Missing only a couple of things: sunglass holders, keyless entry on rear passenger doors, front engine hood needs stand (doesn't hold up by itself). Would I buy another one - yes, an auto once the learner drivers leave home!

Very impressed
Purchased our XV with the expectation that it would get us off the beaten track. Overall very impressed with how well it does this. Ground clearance is excellent, drive up a very steep incline on loose rock was quite a surprise, handled it with no problems at all. This was a really good purchase and does the job that we wanted it to do, if not more.

My Wife deserved the Upgrade
My wife loved her MY14 L series XV manual. But after a visit to the Zupps dealer to look at the new MY16 version I decided that she deserved the top of the range S series. Leather, Electric seat, Seat heating, A much better reversing camera and similar infotainment to my 2015 Outback. Interior is smarter in leather with highlighted stitching and the room in the rear is excellent, The sunroof and darker tint glass, Xenon self levelling, dusk sensing headlights also a bonus. Now with 25,000km's on the clock it hasn't missed a beat, no rattles or ...Read more
squeaks, considering the rough roads we drive on everyday. Fuel economy is good for the mixed type of driving she does But out on the highway it sits on 5.8 L/100km which is better than the MY14. Definitely not a speed demon away from lights, however the all wheel drive, extra height driving position and all the other safety gear, gives both of us the peace of mind that no matter what type of road conditions she meets, she will be safe and that's important to me.Similar opinion? Overall a great car
I bought a brand new Subaru XV last July and overall I am very impressed . I went for the top of the line with leather interior and a number of other upgrade features. The car rides and handles really well and is pretty good without being excellent on fuel - about 450-500kms / tank but that is a lot of short trips and the one longer trip I did it was more like 750km/tank.
If I was to nominate a less redeeming feature it would the front and rear bumper bars would not offer any protection in an accident and would not handle much of a bump at all for them to crack or split. We are talking quite flimsy here.

Generally very good, has issues and annoyances however
We bought this new. The wife wanted a Subaru and that was that. Previous car was a Lancer and was too low for easy exiting from the seat. Personally I dont rate it much better height wise, but its her car. Boot is small. To fit much stuff in it you need to put the seat down in the back.Taking 3 or 4 people to the airport is just not on if they have a mid size case each.
Drives OK, nothing spectacular but is fairly comfortable, except the seats are hard. Fited sheepskin covers over the leather and its much better.
To be comfortable I have to ...Read more

All for the driver!!
Love my Subaru xv. We down sized for fuel savings and it has really one me over. On average driving, lots of hillls I am getting 7.4L/100km. We drove to kalgoorlie and it was sitting at 6.6L/100km. Handles beautifully. Have had to stop in angry for kangaroos and it pulled up straight and very quickly. Only one problem is the small boot, we have put a roof rack on though to help with that.
Family car and I feel very safe in it.

My 2012 Subaru XV is tomorrow getting it’s 3rd engine in less than 50,000km. I brought the car new and have nothing but issues - never again. I guess my question here is has anyone else had as much drama??
2 answers
why has it been replaced each time?
Mine had an oil leak under warranty needing to remove the engine to resell the cam carriers. After that it had a ticking noise that was found to be a bent camshaft. Engine out again and new camshaft installed. Now running well at 80,000 kms
We bought our 2012 Subaru XV in March 2015. It ran like a charm, clocking up 110,000 ks without a hitch until four weeks ago when it shuddered, lost power intermittently and flashed about four different messages reporting engine trouble. We've been waiting all this time for the problem to be diagnosed, and now onto our third hire car at great cost. We bought Subaru on the expectation of reliability and thought we were winning the game. Nooooot sooo. We are waiting for some satisfactory answers Subaru!

Hi
We have a dilemma with our 2012 Manual Subaru XV which threw up all warning lights one evening driving home. Subaru dealer told us we needed a new battery, quoted us 750 including diagnostics test, we had it replaced for half price with a local mechanic. Drove away, and discovered all the warning lights on dashboard again. Second diagnostic test at Subaru dealer (more money:( and now we are told a problem with ABS system which cost 6500 to fix. This knocked me off my feet. Has anyone spent such enormous amounts on this problem, or this car, in one hit? Very angry at this point as I feel there is no guarantee that this may be all that is wrong with the car.

Bought a used 2012 XV and days after buying it, it did this exactly. Turns out it just needed a new o2 sensor.
