Subaru XV
A really nice car to drive, BUT many problems and a long time to rectify....not sure if it was worth the trouble. The car has been using and running out of oil since I bought it new. The dealer and Subaru people say it is normal to use up to 2 litres of oil between services and to carry a container of oil on long trips. I have run out of oil 4 times in the 40,000 km since I have had the car and it has been topped up numerouos other times. The first time was Christmas day between Cooma and Canberra. Very distressing and inconvenient. The dealers...Read more
response was for me to have the oil checked every 2,000km and topped up. Kept telling me there was no problem. After it used 1.5L in a few thousand km they asked me to have it monitored every 1,000km. Eventually after many complaints etc they are going to fix the excessive oil use. The parts have been ordered even though the motor has not been pulled apart, so they obvious knew what the problem was the whole time. A very unstiosfied customer. My father-in-law is now having the exact same problem with his new Forrester. Update: After 2 years of battling with Subaru and running out of oil at least 6 times, being told the car is ok and having it monitored ever 2000 km it was finally "fixed". I drove it on the weekend having and ran out of oil. I had done a total of 400km since it had been in the workshop for 4 days and "fixed". Now they are looking at it again.....not a good outcome so far. Who drives a new car and fills it with oil every few kms ?????? I now only drive in the sydney CBD for fear of getting stuck AGAIN on a freeway. Comfort easy to drive. Uses huge amounts of oil and I couldn't drive more than about 1,000km without running out of oil2 comments
They have replaced the piston rings and 3 weeks later I ran out of oil on the weekend after having driven 400km since they "fixed" it. Now back in the workshop for another look. NOT HAPPY

First buy 2012 XV Second buy 2014 XV
Bought the first XV in 2012 the fuel consumption averaged around 6.8 L per 100 ks most of the driving was country driving in southwest of Western Australia. If used in true off road the fuel went up to around 15L or more in bull dust 200 mil thick. The only problem was a slight rattle sound sometimes on rough roads the sound came from the front passenger dash area. On the new 2014 XV the rear camera seems much clearer and the road to car noise seems less harsh. Also the fuel consumption at present is around 6.4L but will wait and see as time goes on and the miles increase, but is looking good at present.

A very bad experience, will never purchase a Subaru again
I have had the car back to the dealership 13 times. Subaru Australia would not fix the oil consumption issue and kept telling me the problem was normal. Finally after 18 months they replace the Short motor in my car. Zupps Subaru then had the car for 39 days while the fixed it. Not as Fuel efficient as they make out.
Used way to much oil for a new car, Subaru Australia finally believed me and replaced the short motor. Not as fuel Efficent as they make out

Wish I never purchased!
Bought it jan 2012. Biggest regret! Constant oil problems. Took many phone calls to Subaru Australia and the dealership. Constantly monitoring the oil levels. Took nearly 12 months for it to be fixed! And now the navigation keeps freezing and the blue tooth connects to my phone when it feels like it. Wish I never purchased this car. :(
Oil problems, navigation, blue tooth.

Perfect for some
Lovely to drive, good handling and doesn't mind crawling through rutted muddy roads. I regularly get 6L/100km or better but you do need to use premium fuel to get this. I have the S model and love the gizmos but can't believe the electric seats don't have memory, my old territory even had this! I would sacrifice the start stop to have auto lights, auto windscreen wipers and memory seats. Once you've had these it's hard to go without, overall very nice car. More power would be good but it is adequate for normal gentle driving.
Handling, fuel economy, modern look.
Boot is small, lacks midrange overtaking power, top of the range could have more features.

My third soob and I will purchase again ... but only after I have had many years with my XV!
I've been so happy with my two past Subaru (15 years of driving them) that I chose to purchase another. Both previous vehicles (L Series then an Outback) proved to be resilient to harsh driving conditions, salt and only the most wearing components (brakes, tyres etc) required any servicing, even after 16 years. I've never seen rust on my Subaru models. I've never seen paint peeling off Subaru cars nor seen them blowing smoke and rarely broken down on the side of the road - only the very, very old ones!
My 2012 model has been no exception. It...Read more
's comfortable to drive, economical and looks great in any colour. For me, the 2.0L Boxer consumes 6.6L/100km on constant open road/highway speeds at 110km/h. In commuter traffic consumption varies, but I average about 9. This is significantly lower than my wifes Holden Cruze. All MT and AT models have a automatic engine cut out (can be manually disabled) when stuck at lights etc. In my cay I save about 800ml fuel a week using this feature. That's only about $AU60 a year, but it's not just about the cost, it's about a greater impact on the environment. In my car, the engine starts well as soon as the foot is placed on the clutch pedal. It will also start up again automatically under many other conditions (e.g. engine is not warm, air con is running at full power, battery is low V etc). Cargo and hideaway space is much smaller than I am used to, so drivers that are expecting to head away on extended camping trips should either consider a larger vehicle or purchase roof rack storage options. My base model L and Outback made use of the rear cargo area better to store smaller bits and pieces. All round vision is excellent. Steering, braking, AWD are also excellent. Actually, I can't fault anything about the vehicle at all. Though summer is yet to really hit here, I have had several 35'C days and the air con has performed very well indeed, even with that huge windscreen and my model being black inside and out.Similar opinion? Very stylish XV
I thought we were going to buy another model, but after accidently seeing someone else drive this out of the showroom I had to check it out. It's absolutely ideal for families and one-man. I've taken this on country trips, steep hills and on beaches itself. So far nothing wrong. Love the open-roof option. Stereo is great, Built-in map is ideal and reverse parking with Built-in camera is a breeze
Built-in camera's and easy to park anywhere
The boot, it is too small for my liking. Can't fit long thing just in the boot itself.

Why do people buy cars then complain about the boot space? Don't they inspect the vehicles prior to purchase? If you want to fit in "long things" then lay back the back seats. You have three options to choose from.

XV is a stylish and worth what you pay.
I saw the car in a shopping mole, it’s so eye catchy. Orange coloured one is so nice in shade but too ugly in sunlight. Reversing cam is very accurate. All-around car is 8.5/10 perfect than Dualis and Tiguan. Sound system is awesome 9.5/10. Design 9/10. You will feel the difference when you drive the car. 2.0 is enough for this car.

Not enough grunt
I test drove the XV twice. Its pretty much a jacked up Impreza. The lady at the dealer said it has the same shell. But it's a lot sportier looking than the Impreza and all those other boring, boxy looking SUVs out there which is why I really wanted to buy it. In the end I decided against it though because the engine is pretty lacklustre and makes an unpleasant noise.
The high pitched whine of that CVT transmission when you accelerate hard really got on my nerves. It's hard to justify paying such a premium when a Mazda 3 could outgun ...Read more
it. Also, ride could be a touch more comfortable and boot space is smaller than an Impreza. It's a doddle to park though and drives as easily as a car. What's most disappointing is that the car could have had so much more potential but I think Subaru really dropped the ball with this one in my opinion. Looks fabulous! Good for people who don't care about engine power and want the SUV height without the bulk. Very easy to drive and park. Handles well. Very good visibility. Needs more grunt. Boot space too small. Back seats would be more comfortable if they were a little more upright. A lot of people may find the stop/start technology annoying. Takes a bit of getting used to but can be switched off. Lack of a 2 wheeled option to lower fuel consumption7 comments
Agree that there isn't enough power. But that was very clear from the specifications provided and the test drives undertaken so you can't complain about it.

Subaru XV 2.0i-L CVT
A competitively priced car, while there are some cheaper options on the market most of the cheaper options are 2WD variants, this is a great price for an AWD vehicle that comes with a lot of little extras as standard. The 2.0 engine in the CVT is responsive enough although it will struggle a little when fully loaded or going up steep climbs. The L model comes with satellite navigation, sun roof and dual zone climate control. In hindsight I might have gone for the base model as the satellite navigation is only okay, I much prefer using my TomTo...Read more
m app on my iPhone that allows me to have live traffic. If you had no other GPS systems then the satnav would be fine I just prefer the layout of TomTom and the live traffic. Annoyingly the satnav unit is capable of doing live traffic but it appears a small piece of hardware was not included inside the unit when the Australian models were made. The other annoying thing was the car shipping with 2010 maps and Subaru has so far refused to update these for free. I've had no other issues with the car, the start stop technology saves about 1-2% of fuel per tank, it's a little thirsty on city driving but gets really good economy on the highway. I took my XV on a track that was quick rough and probably only suitable for higher 4WD's but it handled it well not losing grip anywhere. Overall a nice little car that's small enough for comfortable inner city driving but big enough for longer road trips and capable enough to handle some rough roads as well. Plenty of extras standard, reliable, easy to drive, responsive steering, good height above ground Satellitel navigation lacks traffic and the maps are old, not a lot of boot space, no 12V outlet in the boot, no diesel optionSimilar opinion? New Subaru XV 2012 6sp Manual
I purchased a new 2012 model Subaru XV 6sp manual early last year for my wife to run the kids to and from school and general running around. I have to start by saying that the car looks great and drives great, solid as a rock like any Subaru, which is why it is so disappointing to be experiencing a pretty major problem with the car.
The car has done less than 15000kms and has been back to the dealer (Zupps Mount Gravatt, QLD) 3 times now for excess oil usage and oil warning lights. Each time we have been told the usage is "within an accep...Read more
table range", which I can't believe can be true as we have never had an issue with any of the 3 previous Subaru vehicles we have owned, and never had to even think about lifting the bonnet to check anything between services. Having to return the car 3 times inside the first 15000kms for exess oil usage has been a real let down and most inconvenient given that it requires "special" Subaru oil and therefore the car has to go back to Zupps each time. We have even asked them to provide a bottle of the oil to top it up ourselves which they have promised to provide at the next service - a request that seems crazy to have to even ask but true. We are now checking the oil usage on a fortnightly basis. I am currently looking into whether this is a known issue with the XV and have contacted Subaru Australia direct with my concerns. Hopefully I get some resolution soon or my fourth Subaru will be my last. Very sad as apart from this the car is very good. Uses too much oil for a new car; requires oil top between service intervals13 comments

What a car!
I bought a Subaru after being a loyal Mitshibishi owner (have had 3) and can't say that I was a huge fan of Subaru but what a mistake I have made all these years. I love it so much that I don't even know where to begin. The car is so comfortable, fuel economy is great, handles like a dream, duel air con controls, reverse camera.....I thought these kinds of items came with high end cars and they were not even extra's. Worth every cent....and I don't like paying for cars.
Everything
Not much engine stop start a minor pain as I don't use it and have to turn it off each time I get in the car.

Subaru XV 2.0S CVT Auto
This was our first brand new car from the dealership and I could afford the top of the line model when I went through a novated lease on it. We've had it 7 months now. We test drove the competitor models like the Mazda CX 5, Holden Captiva, Ford Territory, Toyota Rav4, Honda CRV, etc. We found the Subaru ticked most of the boxes with what we wanted. An all-rounder (From the occasional shop to the really long road trip to the expedition through the hills), economical, comfortable, safe and technologically advanced vehicle. The AWD system coupled...Read more
with the CVT auto makes driving in all weather and road conditions a breeze. Subaru has a reputation of building the kind of vehicle that has a lot of finesse with handling, this one is no exception. I've driven WRX's, Foresters and Outbacks before and like these vehicles, it sticks like s..t to a blanket when cornering. Thanks to the boxer engine, the lower CoG and the AWD system makes the car behave well. Provided you've got good tyres on and your reasonably sensible, this car will handle some pretty hard turns at high speeds without loss of traction. Body roll for this SUV is far better than competitors. Probably why the XV got an almost perfect 5 star ANCAP score. It's got a myriad of safety features that bests a lot of other new cars coming out on the market. The CVT auto was a first for us. Bit bizarre accelerating and not having any gear change. I was apprehensive at first when I heard a lot of older generation CVT auto's had a lot of belt failures. After all, the belt is the component taking the brunt of it. I decided on the auto nonetheless as I felt it was better suited for myself and the missus, but also that we have a 3 year lease term and its a 3 year warranty so if the CVT or anything else goes up, I'm not out of pocket and I'll change car at the end of the lease anyway. So far, it hasn't missed a beat and we're happy with the CVT auto, especially city driving! The 2.0 engine is slightly lacking in power but in 90% of driving, you're not going to hook it like at the Saturday drags. It's ample power for the all-rounder driver. Economy is great for an unleaded engine usually getting around 7.0L / 100km if you don't floor it all the time. We added a tow ball package fitted by the dealership and I've towed a motorcycle trailer with two bikes on it (750kg) from Darwin to Brisbane and the economy gets to about 11L / 100km which is still respectable. Towing itself is no problem even when the rear suspension was fairly low with the load in the back of the XV and the trailer. Going off-road with the XV was surprising. We've gone through some torn up tracks near farms around my area and some rough hills and the XV will laugh it off 9 times out 10. There was one point where the articulation of the suspension didn't allow me to get past this dug out and for an inexperienced off-road driver, might've gotten into some real trouble but the AWD was a lifesaver and some careful wheel placement got me out. There is under body protection as standard for the XV but don't expect it to take the thrashing most 4WD's go through off-road. Although, if you managed to put a lift kit and some better tread on the XV, you'd probably give a few late-model 4WD's a serious run for their money.1 comment
My pillars rattled as well, thanks for the tip.

Love my car
I was looking to replace a 6 year old VW Jetta which had one problem after another and was costing me a fortune in maintenance. rice, and as we were about to go on extended holiday they kept my car till we returned which was a real bonus. I've been driving it for 8 months now. The driver window auto-close/open stopped working when it was 2 months old, but that was just a software glitch apparently. No other problems. The service is not cheap, oil is expensive ("it's special for the XV" apparently), but I knew that up front. It's a wee bit gutless first thing in the morning, but at speed it has good pickup, overtakes well, great on hills. It's also good to drive in heavy traffic, easy to control when stuck in traffic jams, and you don't have to be braking constantly to avoid the tail pipe of the car in front. Economy is fabulous, on a long trip it does in the vicinity of 6 L / 100 km. And it takes regular unleaded, not the extortionately priced 98 of the Veedub. Three things I don't like (but can cope with): bluetooth connection to the phone - You need to get into the car and chill for a minute or so before backing up - it tells you it's connected to bluetooth on the GPS screen which is also the rear camera screen, but it does it while you are backing up. If you are relying on the camera, you lose picture.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

I love my orange bubble!
Our Xv is the 2.0is and its everything we needed. Driving the car is fun and we enjoy taking it off road, as its the only one in its class with all wheel drive. The price was reasonable for what you get in this car range. We looked at other SUV and they looked a bit plastic on the inside. The reverse camera is really clear on the display unit. We put all the extras in the car. Including the roof racks, we took them off as when you drive over 80km you can hear them from the sunroof. Connects to your phone as soon as you get into the car, music, contacts transfer over straight away which is great.
Roof racks make noise when driving fast from the wind.

all roof racks do. the racks on my '03 tribute did that too. i suggest you move the horizontal bars as follows: one at the beginning of the railing, and one at the end. that's how i got rid of the noise.
keep the rubber strips in the roof racks and this will stop the whistling noise in the wind

Subaru XV 2012 2.0i 6 Speed Manual
Our purchase of the Subaru XV 2012, 6 speed manual replaced an 11 year old Subaru Liberty and is our 3rd Subaru vehicle. We went to the Subaru dealership expecting to buy an Outback thinking the XV might be too small for our requirements. We are a family of 4, with 2 primary school aged children and one Doberman. This car is used as a mums taxi around town during the week and on weekends for trips further afield. We have been driving it for 4 months now.
What impressed us about this vehicle was the 35.33 out of a maximum 37 ANCAP crash test ...Read more
rating, the value for money and the look of the XV. The visibility out of all of the windows is exceptional, the turning circle is great, nice low centre of gravity, decent ground clearance and handles well on the tar and the dirt on both long and short trips. Cabin space is surprisingly roomy with the tall man of the house getting more headroom in the XV than the old Liberty. Instruments and controls are thoughtfully positioned and within easy reach of the driver. Not thinking we'd have much use for it the reversing camera has turned out to be quite handy as are the extra 12V outlets for the kids DVD player on long trips. While it would be nice to have a bigger engine the current 2.0 litre seems to have handled everything we have thrown at it so far. On long interstate trips fuel consumption averages out at 7.2 litres per 100 kms and around town about 9.2. The gear stick feels as if it is connected to the gearbox with rubber bands but that just may be technological developments and comparing it to the 11 year old gear stick and gearbox in our old Liberty. Both drivers in the house aren't particularly impressed with the stop start technology as quite often the engine is only off for 1 or 2 seconds before having to restart. While the car is quick to restart we wonder at its impact on the starter motor and switch off the stop start at the start of every drive (no you can't switch it off permanently) The XVs cargo space isn't the largest in this small SUV market. The boot area is quite shallow due to the location of the spare wheel but considering some cars aren't offering a spare wheel these days we'd rather have the spare. We can fit a total of 8 heavily loaded reusable "green" shopping bags like the ones they sell at supermarkets and generally find it handles the school bags and equipment needed for after school activities. Extras that we added to the car were window tinting, a Cargo Step Panel, a Cargo Tray and a carpet mat set. The dealer didn't charge us for these. The Cargo Step Panel has saved the paint from being scratched by the kids pulling their school bags out or by the Dobermans long nails as she jumps in and out of the cargo area. The Cargo Tray has looked after the carpet in the cargo area and provides a bit of traction to stop objects sliding around in the back. A carpet or rubber mat set is a must as any generic mat set just wont fit the specific shape of the foot well.1 comment
There should be a button that has a capital A with a circular arrow around it representing the stop/start tech. Its located near the bonnet release, lower right side of steering wheel. That deactivates it mate.

Excellent car
We bought this car because we were looking for an SUV and it suited our needs. We liked the sporty look and it was the right size for our requirements. The boot space is a bit shallow, however its width was better than some. Excellent to drive. It doesn't have as many features as some other brands, but it was nicer to drive than many of its competitors within a similar price range. We have the middle of the range model with GPS and some other features. I would recommend ungrading to this model or higher, as the different screen improves the use of the reverse camera.
Excellent to drive. Handles really well. Loods good.

My 2012 Subaru XV is tomorrow getting it’s 3rd engine in less than 50,000km. I brought the car new and have nothing but issues - never again. I guess my question here is has anyone else had as much drama??

why has it been replaced each time?
Mine had an oil leak under warranty needing to remove the engine to resell the cam carriers. After that it had a ticking noise that was found to be a bent camshaft. Engine out again and new camshaft installed. Now running well at 80,000 kms
We bought our 2012 Subaru XV in March 2015. It ran like a charm, clocking up 110,000 ks without a hitch until four weeks ago when it shuddered, lost power intermittently and flashed about four different messages reporting engine trouble. We've been waiting all this time for the problem to be diagnosed, and now onto our third hire car at great cost. We bought Subaru on the expectation of reliability and thought we were winning the game. Nooooot sooo. We are waiting for some satisfactory answers Subaru!

Hi
We have a dilemma with our 2012 Manual Subaru XV which threw up all warning lights one evening driving home. Subaru dealer told us we needed a new battery, quoted us 750 including diagnostics test, we had it replaced for half price with a local mechanic. Drove away, and discovered all the warning lights on dashboard again. Second diagnostic test at Subaru dealer (more money:( and now we are told a problem with ABS system which cost 6500 to fix. This knocked me off my feet. Has anyone spent such enormous amounts on this problem, or this car, in one hit? Very angry at this point as I feel there is no guarantee that this may be all that is wrong with the car.

Bought a used 2012 XV and days after buying it, it did this exactly. Turns out it just needed a new o2 sensor.

Subaru has acknowledged a fault on many models of cars related to poor piston rings. If you keep using oil demand they follow the procedure to validate if your entitled for new piston rings at their cost
