nice cooker
I bouhght this slow cooker last month, tt was a basic but useful for daily cooking needs. I am using it almost everyday. I use it to cook coup, rice and noodle. Just turn on and leave it. Come back from work everything is done, quite convenient, hope the energy saving is good too.

Great Slow Cooker!
Love this slow cooker! Everything taste better slow cooked. With low and high options it gives you flexibility around cooking times. The cooking pot is nice and heavy which is something you want in your slow cooker. The pot is removable which makes it nice and easy to clean. Have had this slow cooker a few months and havent had any issues.

Good value for money slow cooker
Purchased this from The Good Guys for $49. Only used it a couple of times to make lamb shanks, and on both occasions, the meat was well cooked and fell straight off the bone. I like the simple to use dial consisting of just 3 heat settings. I actually prefer this over useless features that I might never actually use. It's a well made product and I just need to find more time to make more use of it!

Dangerous and energy inefficient.
Purchased the Sunbeam 5520 used it once and now will return it. Used it once on low 7 hours. The lamb shanks cooked, but the carrots and potatoes (chopped in to cubes did not cook on the upper surface, the lid does not seal and I agree with others that the heat loss is major making it an energy inefficient item. Outside metal was surface was extremely hot making it a very dangerous appliance to use especially with older and younger people.

Good price for a slow cooker
I recently purchased this slow cooker from The Good Guys as it was on special for $35.
We cooked a chicken casserole in the slow cooker on the weekend. We left it in there for 4 hours on high heat. The chicken was nice and tender as well as the vegetables. We wanted something that we could throw all the ingredients in and not have to watch over it and this worked perfectly for us.
Didn't have any problems with how everything worked. However please note that the outside gets quite hot to touch. If you don't want to damage your bench top i would suggest putting it on coasters.
For the price we paid we would highly recommend this slow cooker. It is a no frills device and does what a slow cooker should do.

Bought a lemon
I've never had a slow cooker before so didn't know what to expect. After searing the meat in the stove top and sauteing all the vegetables, I transferred my casserole to the slow cooker and set it on high to bring the temp up, thinking I would then turn it to low and cook for the remaining 7hrs. After three hours, I could still dip my finger in so it was only just warm. The outside of the device was too hot to touch though. On reading the accompanying booklet, it states that the slow cooker would simmer on all settings. I definitely did not have a simmer, so put the casserole in the oven and returned the unit. I may have just bought a faulty one.

Do Not Purchase.
We have an original CrockPot - lid is chipped and electrical connection is starting to get bad contact. Bought the Sunbeam 5520 on a Saturday, used it on Sunday and took it back on Monday. Followed the directions for food and liquid level because of the heating element in the sides. Used high heat (4 to 5 hours) for 4.5 hours - did not have the 6 to 7 hours available for low heat. Whole Chicken dried out completely; medium sized Potatoes and whole Carrots still raw in the middle. Outside metal was hotter than inside the ceramic bowl. Burn...Read more
t hand from inadvertent touch - takes up quite a bit of room on the kitchen bench. Very dangerous if children in the house. Bought it on special; will pay normal price for a replacement crockpot. The Sunbeam appears to be identical to Kmart and Big W Home Brands slow heat cookers - just different knob and paint decal sizes. Price difference is quite dramatic. The item was cleaned and back in the box for return. Told the store of the cooking and particularly heat problem - no problem with the return.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Wasted heat.
We bought a Sunbeam HP5520 a week ago because of it's large size, we have had a Kambrook one for a number of years but sometimes it is too small. Anyway we cooked a stew in it yesterday and it turned out fine but my wife nearly burnt herself on the exterior. The amount of heat it looses to the exterior and hence the air is totally excessive and wasted, with better insulation it would cook much more efficiently and use a lot less power, we want to cook our food not heat up the room. Not sure if we will use it again unless we can wrap it up somehow to keep the heat in.

Great, reliable slow cooker
Reliable slow cooker. easy to clean, Basic Features, which is all you need for a slow cooker. Knob has become a little loose after time, however being a simple dial it is easy to work out the setting you have chosen. Best sunbeam slow cooker, gets used at least x2 per week. Can run a little hot on one side

Works great
We have 2 of these now, got one 2 years ago that works great and a second one last month to make bigger batches of food. It's easy to use and clean, good value too. Produces really tasty, simple meals. Just chuck it all in, turn on and leave for the day.

Just what I wanted.
Very happy with this product. The removable crock insert makes cleaning much easier. I have never been able to do this on previously owned slow cookers. I specifically looked for a larger volume slow cooker and the size is perfect for the quantities of food I prepare. One negative would be the amount of heat which is lost through the housing unit itself. It becomes extremely hot to touch.

erfect slow cooker
Great size, holds heaps, nice and deep, easy to clean, and I like that the power cord can be removed and popped inside the unit when storing so it doesn't get damaged. This replaced a cheaper one that I had for about 10 years and unfortunately the bowl ended up with a large crack. Hope this one lasts as long!

We absolutely love this slow cooker, throw a heap of food in it in the morning and head out for the day and when you get home, bam tea is served. Casseroles, lamb shanks, soups the lost could go on, best investment for a busy person, couple and espescially a family.

My slow cooker is smoking at the bottom and has rubber smell. It is brand new and never used before, is this normal?
3 answers
Ours did smell a little bit on the first use. After that it has been OK. I assume it is the element affecting sheathing on the wiring. If it continues over the next two or three uses I would take it back.
Customer C.Sunbeam
Hi Crystal. As Brushy26 said, there may be initial burn off of manufacturing oils when you first turn on the machine. This should stop after a few minutes and is fine to use. If this issue continues beyond the first use, there may be a different problem and I would advise to bring back to the store.
Can’t bring back to store as it’s past the 12 month warranty stage. Just haven’t used it till now. I’ve sent yous an email about my experience and have received no reply.

My meat comes out tough as an old boot every single time I cook in In?! What am I doing wrong?? I initially thought maybe it was that the lid doesn't really secure that well on this model and its just a cheap one but everyone above seems to love it?

Hi, I am considering either the HP5520 (or 4520) against the HP5590. It appears the only difference is the automatic switch to keep warm when meal is cooked. Is this a necessary requirement if you will not be home? I have noticed most customer reviewers have the 5520. Also which size is best for a family of four, with occasional leftovers.
1 answer
We have the HP5520, ours is 5 years old, the 5520 will easily feed a family of 4 ( easily ), this is our second slow cooker of the exact same model, seem's to get a bad rap from people, read the bad rap, but make a informed decision from all points of view, we have friends who have the exact same model with no problems, IF you have a problem then get it fixed !, the cooker is left on in the mornings, come home to a hot meal, we have no problem with the cooker, happliy boils away in either fast or slow mode, the simmer mode works as it should. Sunbeam warranty ALL their products, something goes wrong use it !, hope this helps you decide.
