Shocking! Don't buy!!!!!!
Due to moving overseas a couple of times, I have bought a number of slow cookers over the years. I usually pick the simplest design with just slow cooking functionality in a ceramic pot with high, low and warm functions. This one fitted the bill. This slow cooker is hands down the worst I have ever used! It never seems to reach a high temperature and boil. Even when I put already boiling liquids into it. I usually cook stocks and broths over-night. Even after 5 or more hours it is still not boiling on the high setting. This is not fit for purpose and is probably dangerous!!!! Buy another brand.

Very disappointed
After the second use the unit became very hot on the outside, dangerously so and cracked our benchtop. We returned it to Sunbeam who told us it was fine!! Now we are faced with a huge repair bill and Sunbeam haven't even returned the cooker to us. Absolutely terrible customer service, on hold for extended lengths of time and never return calls. Useless!

Great performer
I have had this slow cooker for a few years now and have used regularly. It has been great. It is easy to clean the inside pot and makes great stews. soups and casseroles. The inside croc pot has just developed a crack which leaks (Maybe hubby put it in Dishwasher?). So going to buy another one just like it today. Would recommend.

Heating Advice
Very happy with my 5520, although don't use it very often. The control switch is broken, so I'm actually going to buy a replacement unit tomorrow. Re heating, before using, I put in about 2 cups of water from the "Hydro Tap" (almost boiling) while it is heating up. Tip this out then add food. Good result!

Dangerous product
I bought this product online on 24/04/2016 from Myers Melbourne (Order No 8000007556). Delivered by Australia Post shipment: 103408182.
The previous, different brand one I bought from the Vinnies second hand for $5 died after 8 years of faithful service.
The present Sunbeam one I tried a couple of weeks ago, and when I went to check it after a couple of hours on low heat the bench top underneath was too hot to touch. I actually that I thought I was going to incur the expense of having to repair it.
The old second-hand one that we pre...Read more
viously owned never showed any sign of heat on the bench top under the slow cooker. Why does this Sunbeam product? Is it a fault in the design? Is the base too close to the bench? Yes, after noticing the very hot bench top, I went back to the instruction book. And there it does say: "Do not operate the cooker when placed directly onto a bench top. Place a heat proof mat or chopping board underneath to protect the surface".Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

I can live without it
I understand the appeal of the slow cooker, but I still can't get into them. I'm not a huge fan of slow cooked meat anyway, but I cook lambshanks for the men in this and they love it. I use extra liquid (stock/wine) as I find it has a tendancy to dry out and burn around the top edges.

Hi Farmgirl,
Thanks for your review and great feedback on our slow cookers. Sunbeam slow cookers are not only great for meat recipes, they can be used for a multitude of different food groups - for e... Read more
xample we have great Christmas recipes that you can find on the Sunbeam website - Sunbeam Choc-Cherry Pudding and Steamed Christmas Pudding.they look great, although the idea of running the slow cooker for 3hrs in summer is not so appealing and I don't make hot puddings in summer. my mum makes lemon curd in her slow cooker, but I use my Thermi.

Cracked insert
We have had this slow cooker for a couple of years and it has now developed two cracks down either end of the bowl (near the handles). It now leaks during cooking and will need to go in the bin. Thought we had purchased one like they used to be, lasting more than 30 years!

Meets all expectations.
I broke the lid of my last slow cooker and it was going to cost more to replace the lid than buy a new one. While we were happy with the previous brand, we decided to give the Sunbeam a try. The black ceramic pot was a big draw card. I am happy to say that I love the way it cooks very evenly, have never had any burning. I like the keep warm function which I did not have on my old model. My only wish is that there was a slightly bigger model. We are a family of 7 and I would love to be able to cook enough for 2 meals however my lot manage to not leave very much even with a full slow cooker.

Cracking
I noticed a slanting crack going down the side of the insert beside the handle. After the next time I used it, I noticed a similar crack on the other end. The insert is very heavy and I think the weight of the bottom of the crock is pulling the base away from the top, especially around the handles. I have been using slow cookers for over thirty years. The cost of a new insert is more than a new slow cooker. This is going in the garbage.

Good value for money works well.
I bought one, it works well and picked it up at good guys for $55.
I read some of the reviews here... one person's insert cracked and another's burned the food.
If you read the instructions it actually tells you it can crack if the insert is heated too quickly when cold or contains frozen goods. I found that if I have a lot of frozen stuff in it and it becomes cold, I just use the low function not the high one to prevent this. I never found it burned anything because I put the correct amount of liquid in it, and made sure if was filled to at least half way, as the instructions also says.
Basically it seems if you follow the instructions it does everything it says it's going to do with no fuss for a low price.
I'm happy.

good cooker bad company
Although I am pleased with my 5520, sunbeam itself is one of the rudest companies I've had to deal with, I was super excited to use my cooker and got everything ready for it, put the lid on and realised it was the wrong lid- so I emailed sunbeam and was nice about it all, eventually they agreed to send me a new lid- but their replies were slow and after waiting 3-4 weeks for the lid 're-emailed them asking where the lid was- NO reply, after waiting longer eventually I called them and they said I'd get the lid within 7-10days (even though I'd wa...Read more
ited so long already and they'd screwed me around and ignored me they couldn't express post it or use some innitiative) eventually I got the lid, and I like the cooker but I refuse to support sunbeam after how careless and rude they were! i like the whole thing the company, the outside seems a bit cheaply done but it was fairly cheapSimilar opinion? No-Cooker
I have a HP5520 Slow Cooker. When it was first turned on, the switch emitted a lot of white smoke which stunk like burning plastic. Returned it to the store and was told that the smoke was perfectly normal. Apparently preservative oil from the heating elements, burning off. No mention of this in the manual. The exteriar of the cooker gets extreamly hot as mentioned in other reviews. But the contents in the dish never gets over luke warm. Just as well I've got a microwave.
Looks Smart
Keeps meals warm but doesnt cook

Love it:)
I love my slow cooker, it cooks everything perfectly . A leg of lamb slowly roasted is my favourite - I will never cook lamb in the oven again as it just falls off the bone. This appliance makes life easy as you can come home to a beautifully cooked meal. This is one sunbeam product that hasn't failed me:)

My slow cooker is smoking at the bottom and has rubber smell. It is brand new and never used before, is this normal?

Ours did smell a little bit on the first use. After that it has been OK. I assume it is the element affecting sheathing on the wiring. If it continues over the next two or three uses I would take it back.

Hi Crystal. As Brushy26 said, there may be initial burn off of manufacturing oils when you first turn on the machine. This should stop after a few minutes and is fine to use. If this issue continues beyond the first use, there may be a different problem and I would advise to bring back to the store.
Can’t bring back to store as it’s past the 12 month warranty stage. Just haven’t used it till now. I’ve sent yous an email about my experience and have received no reply.

My meat comes out tough as an old boot every single time I cook in In?! What am I doing wrong?? I initially thought maybe it was that the lid doesn't really secure that well on this model and its just a cheap one but everyone above seems to love it?

Hi, I am considering either the HP5520 (or 4520) against the HP5590. It appears the only difference is the automatic switch to keep warm when meal is cooked. Is this a necessary requirement if you will not be home? I have noticed most customer reviewers have the 5520. Also which size is best for a family of four, with occasional leftovers.

We have the HP5520, ours is 5 years old, the 5520 will easily feed a family of 4 ( easily ), this is our second slow cooker of the exact same model, seem's to get a bad rap from people, read the bad rap, but make a informed decision from all points of view, we have friends who have the exact same model with no problems, IF you have a problem then get it fixed !, the cooker is left on in the mornings, come home to a hot meal, we have no problem with the cooker, happliy boils away in either fast or slow mode, the simmer mode works as it should. Sunbeam warranty ALL their products, something goes wrong use it !, hope this helps you decide.
