Record will stop
Worked fine for a few months then the record function stopped. Called Teac, absolute no help what so ever.
If you want something just for TV viewing, it's good. But if you want to record something, better off paying a bit more and getting another brand.

OK for the price
Last year I bought this TEAC unit to replace an old model of the same brand which could not receive the new TV stations in Sydney. It worked OK until one day came up with "TV7 invalid channel"; re-scanned and no better. Reset unit to factory set-up, re-scanned and OK. Left with "no automatic updates". I hope this help someone with same problem.

Rubbish
I bought this Teac after my Strong SRT 5430 (bought in 2013) died in April 2022. After installing this Teac I realised that the only channel info it displayed on screen was the channel number and nothing else. It didn't show the current program name nor channel name, just exclusively the number. I missed seeing the show's name, channel name and the next program's name because the Strong SRT 5430 displayed all this. I was surprised because the firmware is quasi-identical, that is, the Strong & Teac set top boxes are probably sourced from the sam...Read more
e factory with firmware tweaks requested by the brands. The menu items, menu order and even the words and icons are nearly all the same. So I was hopeful that a firmware update would enable showing more channel info on the Teac unit. I downloaded the firmware from Teac and fed it to the set top box via USB, the firmware updated, it showed 100% complete and the Teac HDB860 simply didn't turn on again, not even the LED indicator, it was completely dead. So I just went to Strong's website and found their latest model, SRT 5434, Googled where to buy it and bought it from Radio Parts in Melbourne. I first hooked up the unit at the store because I wanted to see if it displayed channel info, and it did, with fewer details than the older SRT 5430 (like, no info on res, like 1080p etc), but the Strong SRT 5434 did show the channel name, current show, current show's progress bar, next show's name like my old Strong SRT 5430. I returned the Teac HDB860 to JB. I would have returned it even if it hadn't died. I was too bothered by the fact it wouldn't show any additional info other than the channel number. JB HiFi rejected this review for their website, so I was even more motivated to post it here.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Are video files recorded on the Teac HDB860 encrypted?
If not, can they be played on older model Teac PVRs such as the HDB849?
2 answers
They are not encrypted, they are M2TS files, same type as the files recorded in the old boxes. However they cannot be played in the old boxes and vice versa. I can play the old and new files in my PC using the "Films & TV" app. My SONY blu ray play cannot play any of the recordings done in TEAC boxes. old or new,
I dont know sorry, dont have another Teac model.

Wanting to watch something I recorded it's coming up unsupported format this has never happen before

I go you the multimedia section press pvr nothing working it saying unsupported format
You don't say where you recorded it. If it was recorded in an old TEAC is PVR recording and the new TEAC does not support it. Some BlueRay and DVD player do some don't. The new TEAC records MTS files. My PC plays them OK, (they are located in the HPVR folder not in the PVR folder )but my Blueray player does not.

I've had the hdb8gy0 for while now and using a kingstone 64 GB usb. It was fine until the other day but now the box won't record.I've tried reformatting but it says there's a format error. Any ideas?

I have had the same problem with 64GB USBs. 32 GB drives work fine. I have never tried a hard drive because I don't know if it can be powered from the box USB port or needs an external PSU.
