Also referred to as: Toyota HiLux MK8.I 4x4 2.8L Turbo Diesel SR 2019 and Toyota HiLux MK8.I 4x4 2.8L Turbo Diesel SR 2021.Terrible fuel consumption,
Fuel consumption over 12ltr/100kms, Automatic gearbox (artificial intelligent) has overcomplicated itself. Without a Toyota reset these vehicles don't go into 6th gear within the legal speed limit. They admit this is a large contribution to the high fuel consumption, but don't want to release it to the media.

Not much bang for your buck
Gonna keep this short and sweet. Terrible fuel economy. The cruise control system is garbage and interior/speakers/ just the little things are lacking. Had a Mazda BT-50 XTR before this I’ll never buy another Hilux can’t wait to get rid of it.
Purchased in August 2021.

All in All a Great ute
Our 3rd Hilux after 2 x 2007 models.
Have had no issues whatsoever, we run a regional electrical contracting company so vehicles carry plenty of weight. Fuel consumption isn’t great, but nothing with ladders on roof and bullbars/spotlights is.
Feels stronger in the chassis and driveline than previous model. Have done 80,000km in the past year now and it hasn’t skipped a beat.
Only downside is seats aren’t as comfy or shaped/positioned as well as previous model.
Purchased in March 2021 at Peter Kittle Motor.

Steering wheel not staying straight seems to move slightly depending on which direction you turn.

Basic but dependable
We've purchased about 4 Hiluxes recently, as well as Volkswagen Amaroks, Ford Rangers, Holden Colorado, Nissan Navara.
The Toyota Hilux is a safe choice. It has the same vices as any other crew cab ute (basic, bumpy, wheezy) but is generally inoffensive to own.
Volkswagen Amarok is probably the best, Ford Ranger also very good but a bit truck-like. Navaras are cheap, crappy and gutless - whether they have a Nissan or Benz badge, same car haha.
Toyota Hilux is a bit gutless but does the job. (diesel automatic 4x4 crew cab completely empty). Fuel...Read more

Great vehicle
Done 55k,serviced on time by myself, never had any problems. I drive my hilux every day, usually 10 kms to work and back,no dpf issues ever. In saying that i do use the correct dpf oil at services and have minimal idle times. Have never had any driveline clunking i have read about either.I see people believe theres a fuel gauge problem, because they can only get 60 liters in the tank once the low fuel light is on.Isn't this simply a early warning system meaning fuel level is getting low and it will need filling in the next 100 200 kms?Unlike my previous new ute which had many problems from the first month i owned it until i traded it with auto trans problems at 90k, this hilux was cheaper to buy and much more reliable than the ranger

Poor fuel usage
I purchased a 2017 hilux SR with automatic transmission. Bought this vehicle brand new. It is used as a farm vehicle and on the open highway. Have had all its services done on time at the dealership. I am relatively happy with it. I have done 40k now and have had no mechanical issues with it. From new it has had a higher fuel usage than I expected. Around
13L/100km. Can get around 11.7 on a long run with no load. I have complained to the dealer about it. Their computer says there's nothing wrong with it.
On the highway when doing 110km/h it mostly stays in 5th gear. Only changes to 6th gear going downhill. Seems like the motor is under powered. If I can get the high fuel usage problem solved I would rate it 5 stars.
Purchased in December 2021 at Toyota Dealers for $51,000.00.

Unfixable Brake squeal - buyer beware
Toyota “genuine service” have failed to stop the break squeal after 4 attempts.
For the last 32,000kms my fully optioned diesel auto sr5 with “leatherette” interior has sounded like a squealing 50 year old “sh$tbox”.
RRP on this car with my Toyota genuine upgrades was $80k (I didn’t pay $80k)
Terrible experience.
Feel like I bought an 80’s hilux rust bucket that’s been running beach tours for 30 years
Caveat emptor!

Where is the reliable proven bullet proof Hilux of yesteryear???
On the strength of the Hilux of old I bought a brand new one in Feb of this year 2018. I didn't even sit in the vehicle beforehand (Double Cab SR). In the interest of fuel efficiency and emissions it has the dreaded "Common Rail fuel system". It cannot tolerate the smallest spec of dirt, 6 micron (6 thou of a millimetre) will kill the system. Likewise the smallest droplet of water. Toyota fit a fuel filter to catch 30 micron and larger, but will not warrant against dirty fuel. The dealer tells me I can have fitted a second filter, but noth...Read more
ing finer than, you guessed it, 30 micron. There is a water detector in their filter, good that gives me a warning. Sorry NO, any extra filter must be before theirs!!! Why??? I had the filter fitted by ARB, fitted in half the time quoted by the Toyota dealer, and cost. The vehicle is controlled by the computer. This vehicle was bought to take me hunting in rough country. When I asked about fitting UHF radio it was suggested I use an auto electrician as Toyota might squeal warranty infringement. At this point it`s under a three year warranty but after that I`m on my own. How much faith can I have in this contraption as moisture and dust infiltrate the electronics as it inevitably does. Can I trust it in the recesses of Barrington Tops and Victoria`s High Country, I don`t think so.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Disgrace to the hilux name
This new ute is gutless, thirsty and poorly designed. It has caused me endless back problems as a taller person getting in and out, and has caused back problems in a shorter workmate. Poor seats, poorly timed gear changes with the automatic, detuned to 30hp less than the previous model, serious lack of fuel efficiency (13.1l/100k) and a lack of towing power make me enjoy my 99 hilux so much more. Especially when its 3l non turbo motor left this new ute for dead on a motorway on ramp... save yourself the trouble and buy something else...

Fantastic Vehicle
The performance of our Toyota HiLux has been absolutely amazing- we had so many issues with our (Brand new, off the lot) Jeep that we left the brand to buy a Toyota. The Eco mode can be used almost all the time, except for serious off-roading, which the truck has handled incredibly well. It has been our most reliable car yet- no maintenance issues at all and the gas mileage for a truck is really good.

Magnificent Hilux !!
This Hilux is magnificent, traded the Hilux 2014, got the 2017 SR+, more refined vehicle, excellent fuel economy currently getting 9.8 per 100 and I have only travelled 1200km, so more than happy with that. Unfortunately its fitted with DPF but so are all the brands now after Sept 2016, something we all have to get used to and know what is required, its the euro 5 requirements unfortunately. However when vehicles come out of warranty and the DPF is buggered, the cost of these things are off the planet, so something has to be done with that, in saying that, if the DPF is buggered, remember its a symptom of another problem that has caused it to go !

new hilux
We have many at work fifo mining the problem is the DPF filter we have a max speed at the mine site of 60km so because they do not get up to highway speeds they do not burn off the DPF and keep going into limp mode so if you are in the city and don't get out and hit the 80 to 100km mark for a good stint, the DPF doesn't burn off, it's a problem real problem and if you need a new DPF be ready to pat thousands once warranty is over, thats why there giving the SR5 away at the moment as people are waking up, don't get me wrong there all going south...Read more
with emission controls and electronics giving problems. Until they do something if you don't get out of town enough and have a decent 45min run you will have problems and we have a fleet of 30 plus new hiluxs here and all doing he same, most are driven at 40 to 50kmh max all day, there talking about bypassing them theres already aftermarket kits but be careful not to void your warranty and make you vehicle not road worthy.Similar opinion? 2.8L Diesel Duel Cab Manual Hilux SR 2015
I love this car despite the reality that the finance is a little more than I should have reached for. So far it has been extremely fuel efficient at 9L per 100km average and 7.7L at best after 11,000km. The inside is comfortable and modern without going over the top with bells and whistles. Feels like I am driving a standard modern sedan in ute form.
Good
>The driving experience
>The transmission
>Responsive engine
>Fuel efficiency
>Very confident off road and has more height underneath than it looks
>Looks extremely sleek and aggressive with the Toyota bullbar and snorkel fitted.
>Handles quite nicely

Hilux 2.8L Diesel - constantly breaking down - DPF Faults
The ute is nothing to be super happy about as far as comfort or room I'm 194cm tall and room is only just acceptable as the driver, it is terrible for the rear passengers, if your in the back on country roads then I pity you as you are in for a rough ride. My biggest problem with this ute is the engine warning lights and the car being locked down to a limp mode. I believe it is an issue with the DPF. I can't drive 100km without the DPF lights coming on. if you overtake I think its related to high engine revs, anything over 3300 rmp. I have disc...Read more
onnected the battery to reset this fault at least 50 times. It is my work and personal car, the car does a lot of idling and low speeds around my work site without issue. it is when on the highway when higher speeds (100km/hr) are occurring that its likely the fault appears. Ive gotten better at managing the fault (feathering the accelerator and not going too hard on the throttle) hows that possible you ask on an already underpowered vehicle..... anyway... don't buy a Hilux 2.8L if your going to be doing a lot of low speeds and or idling to clog the DPF, I have had the DPF replaced, 4 times to Toyota for repairs, multiple "forced burns" at the service agent (not Toyota) and also the ECU update from Toyota to "fix the problem"....so Toyota is say to you... it didn't work!!! On another note, I have a 2.8L Prado that has never given me an issue it has been predominantly driven on the highway 40,000 km and is a great car... Same engine yet one is a dud. So if its your work car don't buy it, if its your private car, when it happens to you, get a DPF delete kit and don't have the problem anymore....Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Fuel guzzler
Bought the new hilux three months ago and am yet to get more than 450kms out of an entire tank.
Spoke to toyota and they said the car should get 750-800kms if driving on freeways, (which i am) but seeing that i have a bull bar and tray that would be the issue, really 350kms difference?
The next advice was to run the car until it ran out of fuel completely because the fuel light comes on early, which i thought was hilarious.
Car also feels like it lacks power when taking off, as if the gear ratio in the auto isn’t correct.
Also any slight we...Read more

Very average
2017 SR Dual Cab Tray Back 4 x 4 Diesel, so far 3000 kms, I have driven plenty of 2008's to 2014's.
Pathetic fuel tank size
Harsh auto transmission and confused changes
no E xtra 12 v plugs
Pathetic rear springs
Very average ride, ok on the highway
Fuel averaging 13.4l/ 100!!! In this day and age ? Auto and engine make real hard work of towing
Had the pleasure of towing a camper to Dalhousie in the vey wet with a 2.2 lt Amarok Deisel, 2014. - drive one of these before you think of a hilux new they are twice the ute in many ways

About 20% better than I expected
I have never had a Hilux before. My other weekly drive is a V8 Troopy. Hilux drives great, cold air, traction control excellent, power button VERY effective. Unlike others I like the gear down auto that brings revs up on descents. Saves the brakes, which are very good. Getting around 9.5l/100 in normal driving, mix of loaded and unloaded, down to 7.9 for unladen cruising like a nanna. Worst 14.5 fully loaded towing a tandem with 1500kg in it. Don't like the 4WD dial and after years of lever action low range it takes some getting used to. Radio aerial is not very effective. Very reliable so far (20,000) and even getting reasonable wear out of the tyres, but have Coopers ready to go on.

Awesome ute!
Brought my sr dual cab hilux this year, absolutely love it! Motor goes really well, pulls my tandom trailer without any dramas, ride is excellent, very quiet inside. I test drove lots of other brands but toyota wins hands down. I drive this ute every day with all my tools etc and it continues to impress me. Onya toyota!

Buyers test drive
Worst driving experience. Dual Cab SR 2.8L diesel with auto transmission. This car just doesn't go. Makes a lot of noise but very little throttle response. Steering quite dead, but sits on road ok. Not as much room inside as you expect. Rear seats bases fold up but this doesn't really provide much storage benefit. How does Toyota get away with so much popularity for such a lousy drive?
