Nice - Good Handling - even in tight spaces.
This is an excellent vehicle but would benefit from a panoramic camera view on all models. Currently only the VX and Kakadu have it. IT would also be good it it had auto door locking while driving and auto mirror folding when locking.
The GXL has provides most bang for your buck in the Prado range. The GXL does not have KDSS. and does not have option for it either. Only the DIESEL model is now available - but read about the DPF filter issues before you buy.
Edit: Toyota has done a DPF service and upgraded firmware. Now you can get an indication when the burn is happening.
Newer models have a manual DPF burn switch installed.

What a world of difference!
Coming from street performance background I really admire how the Prado is built. It was a car that was shortlisted from 5-6 more brands/models and technically my first ever brand new car. I have owned (and still own) several cars in the past ranging from small hot hatches (Swift GTi, Sirion M300 Sports), family sport sedan (Bluebird SSS Turbo), Crossovers / SUVs (Airtrek Turbo AWD, Dualis AWD) to no-nonsense, raw performance coupes (R35 GT-R, Skyline R33 GTS-25t) and the 150 series Landcruiser Prado is technically my first real 4x4 with solid ...Read more
rear axle! I was initially surprised with its poor handling and harsh ride - literally like a boat compared to all of my previous (and current) vehicles but after 15,000 kms or so the handling did get better. I assume the harshness was due to brand spanking new suspension system and needed the run-ins. My first road trip at 1000 km on odo, to Alice Springs from Darwin took a while to get used to(the harshness). I can't complain much power-wise, the torque of 450 Nm carrying such mammoth body is not comparable to how I pulled from the lights in my 2.5L turbo petrol performance couple but does the job well when pushed hard. Did several road trips across Australia especially NT and overtaking road-trains is not an issue. My vehicle is still stock standard, and only added OEM Toyota snorkel and ARB Bull Bar on itso the added weight and "tweaked" aerodynamics may play a part in my FC compared to stock ones. Love how the fuel consumption is hovering on single digit cruising on highways at legal speed, taking into consideration the weight of the vehicle. The 150L tank certainly a winning factor, and one of the reasons I chose the Prado over the 5-6 other vehicles I shortlisted last year. With that tank, I am actually able to drive without stopping to refuel between Darwin and Alice Springs- conservative style of driving that is. I do notice the moment you start cruising above 120 km/h the fuel figures would jump up to 10-12 L/100 km instead of hovering between 9 - 10L / 100 km. No issue at all with build quality and the size of interior. Easily the biggest one I had! Running costs are fine for now as I have capped servicing with Toyota at $240 per service until 60k km. The vehicle is also salary packaged so I am not that worried about maintenance. Last note, this is the vehicle that truly will bring you anywhere, road, off road, long distance, short distance trips (though not encouraged with its DPF burnout issue) and if there ever was going to be a zombie apocalypse - this is is the one to have!Similar opinion? Awesome
Low servicing costs
Tough tough tough
Versatile family car
Good off-road
Good I’m the snow
Good all round family vehicle
Very hard to find fault
Replaced radiator, tyres, brakes and one wheel bearing in 6 years. Pretty hard to argue with that in what is now a 15 year old car

Happy with my car
Hi all very happy with prado i purchased hilux at the same time and you can defiantly feel the comfort .Recently did of road trip and hit a wash out rather hard, went to use headlights at sunset not working .I checked fuses ok as had done a few river crossings, last resort tapped relays in fuse box and they came on and of we go .
September 7th 2018 Update: Another 10 kW would be perfect
Just completed great central road air suspension fantastic but strong head winds kept us dropping from 5th to 4th not towing anything which pushed fuel consumption to 15 to 16litre per 100ks at 90 to 100kmh, also dont expext your prado to be dust resistant as its every where, have a few days cleaning ahead, on the whole good trip

My Baby, My Life!
I have never ever felt safer or more comfortable in a vehicle. The space is an added bonus but there is nothing my baby can't do and no where she cant go. If and when i ever upgrade i will want something as close as mine as i can get because i just love it!

Great 4wd and very reliable
I bought mine from new in 2003 and drove it for 9 years without any problems at all. Did lots of serious 4wding and this thing will go anywhere. I put a 2 inch lift kit in it for the big rocks in the victorian high country but other than that it was stock.

Why Toyota
Extremely happy with out 2018 Kakadu but it lacks some of the features the 2012 model has.
1. Only one CD at s time whereas previous model was 6 stacker
2. Can only connect 1 phone whereas previous model stored up to 4 phones
They are my only complaints as it is an excellent vehicle.

awsome 4x4. diesel turbo
we are on our 2nd 150 series gxl turbo diesel now, and would not be without one now. the prado is great for towing a mediem size caravan or boat, and still great to pick the kids up from school or go to coles. we have the 3ltr turbo diesel, i would never buy a petrol v6, they are very heavy on fuel with a low resale price for this reason. The only real maintenance ive done is changing the oil every 8,000km, i do the oil and filter myself, my prado now has 170,000kms and still runs perfectly. i had nunawading toyota in melbourne do the...Read more
timing belt at 150,000kms as it was only $330 they charged me, i figured not worth doing it myself for this small amount. i have never had the valve clearances checked, it runs perfect so i thought id let it go until maybe 200,000km mark. the only other thing was the alternator gave up at about 160,000 mark, cost was around $700 for this supplied and fitted at toyota dealer. but this happens to any make or model with this many kms on the clock. i highly recomend any family to buy a prado 150 series, only buy diesel tho, not petrol models!!Similar opinion? Great Car
Like the looks of the car, very roomy and comfortable. Very practical and reliable. Its a 2.8 L turbo diesel. One full tank of diesel gives me more than 1100 kms city driving/urban driving. Although they have used so cheap material around the car. The worst part is that the paint is super soft, gets scratched easily. A bigger turbo or a 3.0L diesel engine would have been really good.

Generally a good reliable vehicle.
Airconditioning unit has just died in my 2008 Prado D4D 3 litre turbo at 160,000km. Air con repair specialist indicated that it's a usual occurrence for my model at this mileage. He indicated that he replaces 50 per year of this series. Apparently same unit fitted to Klugers. Would have expected the unit to last longer than this.

Great for our family and needs.
We purchased the Prado due to requiring 6 seats with 4wd capabilities. This was our favoured option in the price range mainly due to the reliability factor.
As a 5 seater it has plenty of room for our 4 children and myself, including 2 teenage boys. The storage when rear seats are folded down is excellent.
However, with the 2 rear seats pulled out the boot capacity is next to nothing which is not ideal for a large family. To combat this we purchase a roof rack.
Most of our driving is in town and we get approx 10klms per L, whilst highway d...Read more

Love my Prado
Have had 3 Prado's now and absolute favourite car ever. It can handle anything you throw at it. Really lovely to drive, great on road trips and heaps of space. 4WD capabilities are quite impressive, taken it off road and it mostly does what my mates Land cruiser can do.
Only cons are back seat is pretty small, and petrol is pretty pricey. Get about 1000-1200km on the dual 90L (180L) tanks.

Best decision I ever made (for a car).
I had a full sized Landcruiser for 5 years before the dealer that I bought it from tempted me with a trade in. I decided to down-size as well as upgrade the version, so I went for a 150VX. I love it. I love the leather seats, the hi-fi, the LED lights, the auto-setting steering wheel position and the KDSS suspension which makes cornering much more comfortable. I went for the auto-diesel, probably the most popular. I get around 1000 ks to a full tank and it is reasonably quiet. I pull a camper trailer with it and it performs well. If I was asked to list all the things I did not like about it there would only be one; the indicator beep is not loud enough, so there is a risk of leaving it on.

Great reliable car. Economical for its size.
My Prado is 7-ish years old. Runs well, no major issues. It’s a bit hard to park, due to its size. However I find it very economical to run, being a diesel. It’s also very roomy inside. I have slept in the back seat a few times, because it’s so big.

Great car. Disaster for towing.
Traded 2014 3ltr 5 speed auto which I loved for new 2.8.
new model has 6 speed auto which I found all wrong for towing.
At 90 to 95 km per hr 6th gear useless, battling to hold 5th and 4th too low.
Unlike old model I found new gearbox doesn’t work well in manual mode and has a mind of its own.
Result is gearbox wanders between 4th and 5th all day.
Engine and gearbox Just not set up for towing at this speed.
I tow a 2.5 ton van.
Great vehicle in all respects but not for towing u.

Best Car I’ve Ever Owned
We bought a Prado because my husband wanted one - I was nervous about driving such a big car but pleasantly surprised that it’s an easy drive!
It handles well, comfortable to ride in, not too noisy, surprisingly good turning circle, nice modern interior. There’s so much space for our kids and all the stuff that comes with them!
Our 2010 model hasn’t really missed a beat yet, I’d definitely recommend a Prado and Toyota in general!

Reliable, economical family SUV excellent off road
Bought on of the last GXL 3.0L Di in Jan 2015, previously had a 2004 LC100 Sahara TD from new, and a SR5Hilux with the same 3.0L engine. If you have owned a Toyota for more then 3 years its easy to take the reliability and build quality for granted. We have covered over 70k's in the Prado, with only one drama when a 75% worn crappy OE Dunlop Grandtrek o/s/r tyre blew out without warning one wet Sunday afternoon between Gatton & Kilkoy. A quick roadside change assisted by a local policeman who stopped to help slow down the traffic on this narro...Read more
w road, was followed by a dash to Costco to have a set of new Bridgestone Dueller LT's fitted. Had these before on other vehicles, excellent wear rates, brilliant in wet, mud, rocks only downside is they are noisy on tarmac, small price to pay. We monitor the fuel consumption together with all running costs on all our four vehicles, the Prado is no exception. I choose to monitor on a tank to tank basis which provides more accurate results, to date the cumulative average over 72,000kms sits at 8.9l/100. Capped price servicing for 60,000 kms brings running costs right down, and apart from tyres no other expense incurred, doesn't even use a drop of oil between the 10,000km service intervals. Very relaxing vehicle to cover long distances in, recently did 1200km's in one day, can honestly say didn't feel any discomfort. Have found the handling better than the earlier model, and if you learn to adapt your driving technique for the vehicle you are driving, the on road manners are very good for a vehicle of this size and weight. I have found the handling improves with speed. No need to talk about the off road abilities, its legendary, nice to see a rear diff lock available on the new 2018 GXL as standard, just to help out when the tracks on Fraser Island are dry and full with deep soft sand. Having had four under 10 yrs old children in my previous LC100 (leather) decided to go for the Prado seat covers. After nearly 3 years they have done a brilliant job protecting the original seat covers from the trials and tribulations of family life. What would I like to change? well the dash looks a bit 80's Japanese, the function button for the trip/fuel/etc should be on the steering wheel (like my Corolla's) and not hidden behind the steering wheel, shame Apple Play is not available. The whole dash could do with a redesign which I see from the 2018 facelift has been achieved very tastefully.Had a good look around at the competition before I bought this, including the Land Rover Discovery, which I thought had a beautifully designed dashboard and interior, but the poor record of reliability, durability and dealer support made me realise how good Toyota is. I can remember my father having transfer box failure with his one year old 1967 109'' Land-Rover 2.6, 6 cylinder petrol ( the old overhead inlet side exhaust head from the Rover 110). As they say Land Rover will get you there.......... Seats are comfortable, including the second row with very good leg room, the third row are OK for adults for journeys under 2 hrs, would I buy another, you bet, selling this privately, with full dealer service history and have achieved 75% of the purchase price after 3 years, why would you buy anything else? good dealership support, excellent build quality, durable with low cost of ownershipSimilar opinion? This is my second one.
My 2012 model Prado has performed so well that I have just traded it up for a new one (August 2017) . Very happy with the resale value of the old one and the new one hasn't disappointed. The Prado is well designed and well built and I am happy with the quality. Plenty of room with the ability to be flexible with the interior space with ease. I am confident the 2.8 litre diesel will perform as well as the three litre and am looking forward to the same reliable performance going forward. Fuel economy is around 9 litres per 100km but too early ...Read more
to comment further. Everything about the Prado is solid, practical and reliable. A vehicle like this should come with tow-bar as standard and built in to look like it wasn't a tacked on afterthought. April 2022 (19 months on) has not skipped a beat! Still very happy with this unit. Toyota need to upgrade the screen quality for the GPS and I still reckon it should come with a towbar as standard equipment.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Love this car
I'm really enjoying this car. We travel regularly, to both country and city destinations. Everyone is comfortable and happy. The long range fuel tank is a bonus. To date it has handled well on all types of roads in a variety of conditions. There is nothing that I can find to fault after a year of owning it. Long may this continue!
