Baby Q Standard (Q1000AU)

Hi, I own a Family Q for home and I have recently bought a Baby Q for use with out camper trailer.when we go travelling.
I will need to get a longer gas hose for the BBQ - so that I don't need to remove the cylinder from it's 'transport position' - Will I need to a fit regulator on a 4kg POL cylinder - or is that for use with 9kg cylinders only??
Cheers
Bill

Hi Bill,
YES You will need to regulate a 4kg gas supply. You neded to regulate any gas supply.
The regulator is not so much for the pressure OUT of the gas bottle but moreso to regulate the supply INTO the gas valve in the BBQ
All Australian regulators are rated at 2.75 KPa for LPG (Not sure what the standard is for Natural Gas) so the one you have for a 9kg bottle is the same one you will use on a 4kg bottle.
I use 465gram bottles that connect straight to the BBQ without a hose for true portability and even that goes through a 2.75KPa regulator
Happy BBQing

Hi Bill,

Similar to gri2a's answer, yes, you will need a regulator on any gas bottle that is connected to the barbecue - it is part of the Australian Gas Association requirements that make up the certification for any gas barbecue within Australia.
In regards to you needing a longer hose, we have one available: https://www.weberbbq.com.au/weber-accessories/q-3-metre-lp-bayonet-hose/

Baby Q Standard (Q1000AU)

I have a Weber baby q and it won't get hot enough to cook a roast. I tried cooking the other day and the max temp it reached was 300f, after cleaning the jets and all other parts today it will now reach 370f which is still not hot enough to crackle pork etc. can you suggest any likely fixes please?

Suggest to keep the Weber in a place away from any wind as this will effect the temp. If necessary make your own wind break by means of a tree, vehicle etc if camping. don't open more than necessary and if you need to peek do so quickly. do give the baby Q 15-20 minutes on high to heat up first with lid down. and meanwhile have the meat ready to put in ASAP.
For roasting pork, I have the meat upside down. Adding no salt or oilsto the skin. And leave it like that the whole time. Perfect crackly. Don't think I can offer any more than you have done. Barb

That doesn't sound too good at all Bill. It could be a few different things. One thing you can do is take the burner tube out of the BBQ and soak it in hot soapy water. This can get anything out of the inside of the tube that may have gotten in. If you find that doesn't work then I would suggest you give Weber a call on 1300 301 290 and quote your serial number and we can look into this further with you.

gri2a

Hey Bulldog,
When you say "cleaning the jets" youve probably cleaned out the holes in the burner tube (that long tube that comes from near the gas flow control under the plates and doubles back on itself. There is only one jet and its probably still got a partial blockage. I will explain where the jet is.
Remove the screw that tightens down both the burner tube and the spark device at the end that is away from your gas connection. You should then be able to lift out the burner tube. Where the tube was removed from the gas supply end you will see a small brass nut with a hole in the middle at the end of the gas supply valve. That is the jet! Unscrew and remove it and give it a very good cleaning (making sure that it is dry and has no water and/or soapy residue.)
Re-insert the jet (dont over tighten it). Replace the burner tube (the hollow end goes over the jet. Replace the sparker and screw that tube/sparker back down.
Try now!!!
If you still cant get enough heat, take the jet to a weber dealer to ensure the hole is the correct size. Do NOT attempt to drill out the hole and make it bigger in the hope it will be hotter. Leave that to the pros, because, with very minor adjustments to that hole size you can flood your BBQ with gas and cause an explosion. The hole in the jet and the way the jet delivers gas into the burner tube determines the mix of propane and air and it is a VERY PRECISE science.
Let me know how you go

Hi, I am about to experiment with baking bread in baby Q. I am thinking that I should put in foil Convection tray and the trivet and preheat as one would for roasting. Then put the dough in a foil pan on the trivet and turn down to half heat to bake.
What do you think of this method and do I need the foil convection tray? Is it the foil convection tray that makes it oven-likeable?

Your theory sounds fair enough. I myself have made bread but only in my conventional oven, yet to experiment with bread, scones etc.
maybe Weber can direct you with this one but I would be interested to hear how it goes for you.
Cheers Barb

gri2a
gri2a

Your plan looks sound. Baking bread in an oven ususally starts off with "pre-heat oven to 180-200 deg". The Baby Q preheated for about 8 minutes should get you to about the right temperature (the standard preheat for 10 mins can get the baby q up to 220-250 deg which will be too hot) and turning the single burner to half (or maybe even low) to maintain that temperature should work.
Definitely use both a convection tray and trivet.
I havent actually done bread myself so let me know how your experiment turns out

QorM
QorM

Thanks grl2a for the info on temperatures and timing re preheating the baby Q for bread. We have bought the semi cooked bread and tried that at the 10 minute preheat and then 20 minutes at half power. The sourdough option worked well. The others OK but they are not my thing. We had a basic baby Q so I went out and bought a temperature gauge that I tested in our conventional oven and then drilled a hold on BQ's lid and put it in. We will experiment with cooking real start-from-go bread and note the temperatures, successes and failures over the next month or so outback. Reason: you can't get anything but white bread gunk out there.

How do you know when at correct temperature without built in themometer?

2 answers

Honestly, that is why I bought the one with the temp gauge. If you pre-heat at full power for 10 minutes temp should be around 220, 20 mins (for roasts) should get up to around 250. To reduce heat back to 180-190, I turn back down to just under half way. That should work out for you. Good luck!

Weber
Weber Barbecues A.Weber

Hi Lesley - no where in any of the instructions in our booklets or our videos do we ever go by the temperature reading on the thermometer in the lid. They are handy for sure - as a guide to the internal temp of the unit, but it's not like an oven inside - roasting for example is much better at temps around the 220C mark - if you follow the control knob setting recommendations in your booklet that came with your unit they will achieve the required temp needed.
Hope that helps.

Hi there - unfortunately no these are not available to purchase as an accessory. However, everything you can do on the Q1200 you can do on your Q1000 - the heat about and functionality is exactly the same, it's just the lid is slightly higher so can fit a larger roast.

Hi Lisa, I haven't done a Pork belly yet ..... But as a rule of thumb I work on the princable of Cooking a Roast by measuring the thickest part of it a (say .90mm thick) and cooking it for 90 minutes, .120mm
Thick cook it for .120minutes and so on, add a little more time if you like it well done.
So far it's been working well using this method .

Baby q comes with a built in thermometer in the cover,if you did not buy this model you can purchase a similar thermometer and drill a hole in the cover and place it there.A good idea is to go to a Weber dealer and examine one with fitted thermometer so you can place yours in exactly the same place.Very easy to do just need a drill and correct size drill bit

Weber
Weber Barbecues A.Weber

Hi Jean - the Baby Q1000 does not come with a thermometer in the lid - HOWEVER, no where in Weber instructions will you see a specific temperature of the barbie quoted. This is because the thermometer in the lid would only give a guide to the internal air temp. There are many things that can effect a bbq temp ambient temp and wind for example. That's why we talk about the control knob settings in all or videos and instructional booklets / and cookbooks.

No you don't have to have the lid down, but you will be missing out on a flavour bonus that only comes with the smoky affect added to the taste with the lid down.

Suggest you go to You Tube and type in Weber BBQ's and view the Videos. All recommend you pre-heat the Weber (whatever the model) for at least 10minutes and cook with the lid down.Make sure they are at room temp. slightly oil and season before start cooking - Leave the steaks alone for at least 3 to 4 minutes so they won't stick to the grill before you turn for the first time. Don't fiddle and don't turn your steak more than once.

Hi Stell (and David) - all Weber Q's are designed to cook with the lid down at all times..... so many reasons why this gives a better result than "a regular bbq" ... my advice is to check out the video on our website or Youtube on cooking the perfect steak www.weberbbq.com.au - or on our YouTube channel WeberBBQAustralia - but it would be even better if you experience it for real - why not contact a local Weber Specialist Dealer in your area and see if they have any cooking demos coming up - I know you'll be impressed.

I would assume that the half grill, half hotplate would facilitate a wok over the grill bars. It certainly produces ample heat, however a wok normally needs direct flame, so I am not sure.

Hi Wellsy,
No, a wok would not fit inside a Q barbecue, and it wouldn't have the direct heat you would need for that style of cooking. We have wok accessories for our larger Premium range of Gas Barbecues.

Thanks Soozie, I've checked out the bbq shop's very extensive range but couldn't find a half grill on there to go with the half hot plate. Do Weber sell one or are they assuming that if you're going for a half hot plate then you probably have the two half grills already? I'm afraid I haven't; my Q1000 came with full grill that doesn't split in half...

Mark Sims
Mark Sims

I liked your original suggestion....cut the full grill in half. If the weber can support two half grills then I assume there is a mounting support that would do the trick. Weber stuff is so expensive that I would look at that option. However, you can go to that bbq shop and ask the counter to order one. Look at the weber site and write down the product number. If they are agents then they can source it.

Amanda
Amanda

Hiya Ainslie :)
I don't have the cover or cart so I can't help with that I'm afraid.
A 2kg or 4kg gas bottle works great but I had to buy an adapter from a camping store to make the baby q hose attach to it. A 9 kg gas bottle had the correct connection without any adapters so that's the easiest way. :)
Make sure you buy the convection trays and trivet that are suitable size for a baby q. If an accessory doesn't specifically say it's for a baby q then ask the seller to confirm that it is for a baby q before you buy. Most websites clearly state 'baby q' in the same title as the accessory; ie "baby q trivet" or "baby q convection trays" etc. This would also apply to the cart and cover, make sure it clearly states that's it's for a baby q.
Hope you love it like I do!

Ainslie

Thank you for that but still need the other answers please. Weber help?

Weber
Weber Barbecues A.Weber

Hi Ainslie,

The cart you need is the new Portable Cart (code - 6579 $149.00 RRP), you have two options for the cover, the first just covers the actual bbq (6550 $24.95 RRP), the second covers over the cart as well (6554 $49.95 RRP). You can use any 4kg, or 9kg gas bottle - you need the POL fitting on the top - all Swap and Go style gas bottles have these so just grab the size that you prefer. For roasting and baking you'll need the Trivet ( 93385 $29.95 RRP), and the convection trays that go underneath the trivet and create the convection in the unit (91147 $9.95 RRP these are the ones for the Q1000 unit).
Check out our website which show a whole lot more accessories that will help you get the most out of your new Baby Q - pizza stones, Q Ware frypans, rotisseries etc, and of course you should grab a grill brush and cookbox scraper to look after the unit too!
We have a lot of product videos that show how to use your Q - and we use all the accessories in the videos of course so you can see what you use them all for.
Hope that helps!

Weber Barbecues A.Weber

Hi FoxFrog - actually, when using the Weber Baby Q for roasting with the Trivet and the Convection Trays, you should never use it with the half hotplate in one side and one grill on the other side. The system is designed so that there is even air flow all around the food, and having a half hotplate in there when roasting would completely change this effect. Also, there are holes pre stamped in the convection trays so that fats and juices that come out of the roast meats will drop away, not hitting the burner tubes, and collect in the drip tray below. They also burn off really well in the process, creating flavour giving smoke that is the secret to the incredible flavour achieved on all Weber Qs.
To see the process in action check out the roasting video at www.weberbbq.com.au
