After my injury with 100% proof and the claim being accepted over 3 months ago ive been lied to numerous times theyv'e said they sent an email to my drs for more information and its not been sent after i called and checked 3 times before booking a double appointment 3 times with the dr, my assessor angela
is never available shes off to lunch or in a confrence or has just left for the day, i will be putting in a complaint to the ombudsom and heading to a current affair, this is unacceptable, while i cant afford to pay my mortgage and other bills, unnecessary stress and depression, get your jobs done asap just like you taking out money for these bad circumstances .

Big on delay tactics
Claim for IP at 7 months and counting. I, m sick of writing About Aia and Rest .So to make it short and sweet take all the negative stuff written about them by the stressed out people below, and that's my story in a nutshell. Also Go to the REST product review site and read my Shame on you REST review and the conversation I have with the Rest representative about claiming and AIA

Difficult policy: I can’t live with it!
I have AIA income protection insurance (IPI), and life insurance and terminal illness benefit.
You must have an enduring power of attorney (EPA) in place to claim terminal illness benefit. If you have no EPA in place and cannot communicate or fill in a form, they will not allow you to claim.
For the IPI claim, AIA refused to accept a verbal claim. They insisted that I had to fill in a form. After 4 weeks in a coma, I was unable to hold a pen and my focus eyes. Even when I came home, it was close to the end of my 3 month waiting period. There ...Read more
were numerous unanswered emails and unreturned phone calls. Their internal complaints did nothing for me. I was in a coma with terminal heart failure documented by the surgeon. I survived, but now need a heart transplant and can’t work. My wife and the hospital social worker tried to speak with AIA. The first time the social worker rang, the phone was “hung up”. AIA then refused to answer even very general/ hypothetical questions of “what if”? My medical status 6 months resulted in AIA declining my terminal illness benefit claim. Now I can’t work until 6-12 months post transplant. The terminal illness benefit would have cleared our debts and helped greatly. This review has been up 2 weeks. 196 people have viewed it. There have been another 5or 6 reviews more scathing than this one, all in the last 2 weeks. Judge for yourself. Hopefully more people will get enduring an power of attorney in place. Please don’t risk your family’s future, just get this done.13 comments

Constant mess around
I've been dealing with AIA for over a year and have had endless problems. Towards the end of 2022 I made complaints to Rest and AIA about delays, faulty information given, communication break downs and was assured that these things wouldn't happen again.....flash forward to today and once again I have had to call AIA in regards to a payment due weeks ago, only to be told that it would be "escalated" and that no, it hadn't been seen by my assesser as yet, and once again, no she wasn't there, and there was apparently no one else in the building w...Read more

Unexpected rise in monthly premiums
Got life cover just 2 years ago. Advised that premium is fixed upto 75year age and it will rise by 5% as cover will also rise by 5%. But 1st year they raise 8% and this year 35% cover raised by 5% only. Sending emails, trying to get any answer on phone but nothing is happening. Going to cancel the cover after paying huge amounts for last 2 years. wastage of money. Not recommend to anyone.

Not Happy at all
I applied for Income protection back in july 2022 i have been approved and have been waiting for back payments to be calculated so haven’t even started receiving monthly benefits as yet its been 4 weeks since last back payment received and everytime i contact i get told they can’t give me a time frame when I will receive next payment and can’t receive my monthly benefits till all back payments have been calculated.
Im getting very stressed and frustrated not knowing when payments will be received.
And feel when I contact they are annoyed its called income protection for a reason and I don’t feel protection one bit.

Positive experiences with AIA
My experience with AIA income protection has been easy and positive. Most of my information was submitted with my claim form and a few other pieces of paperwork was submitted within a few weeks of claim submission. I was advised that the claim assessment process would take 2 months but it was accepted prior to the the 2 months. The people I’ve spoken to over the phone and via email have been so helpful, informative and supportive. Thank you AIA.

I applied for my AIA Tailored TPD through Sunsuper this year and can only say it was a great outcome and thank the staff for the excellent treatment I recieved, (I had already been successful in my Income Protection claim for which I have also left a review where I really only had the 1 complaint). I was told at the start, it would take between 3 and 6 months to process my TPD claim, it took about 4 and a half months for a successful result. I guess it's easy for me to be positive because I have had 2 successful outcomes but I also went through...Read more
all the waiting for phonecalls and updating medical records and the doubts, but just complied with everything they asked for and while I'm still not in a great financial position, without their help, would be far worse off. If I was to pick anything that they could improve on, it would be to help explain more about the different tax outcomes, so if you are successful, you can make an informed choice as to what you wish to do with your payment. Update: Only 1 real complaint After my workers compensation was exausted, I applied for my Tailored AIA Income Protection which I pay for through SunSuper, although the process was time consuming I still had a reasonable experience and was successful, the thing that I was not aware of and not happy about was the fact that they back dated till the accident and because I had been on workers compensation during that time it apparently offset the payments so instead of now being covered for the next 2 years, I was only covered for the next 1 year and therefore saving AIA a years worth of payments. While I am still grateful for the help, I do think they have robbed in someway.1 comment

AIA reported to AFCA (Australian Financial Complaints Authority)
I would encourage everyone to lodge an external complaint with AFCA about AIA.
I got to breaking point with AIA (same issues as everyone else here) and lodged a complaint with AFCA (Australian Financial Complaints Authority).
It will only be then AIA will change their processes as opposed to their current practises as per the reviews and then AIA posting worthless public apologies.
AIA is salary continuance insurance via GESB Superannuation.
It has been one of the worst processes I have had to deal with and especially during a period of trying to get well. It is ironic actually.

6 months and still on going
I applied income protection last May 2022 after AIA rejected my TPD claim (still ongoing as well as this is being handled by my lawyers now). And up until now my claim is still being assessed even though it is already in the final review with the team manager, already provided all the necessary evidence to support my claim, yet still not hearing anything from it. y with it. Especially by waiting 6 months on it it is very disappointing and frustrating knowing you dont know what is the real deal with it. I dont want to wait for another days or weeks just to be told that the claim is rejected especially that I am in and out of the hospital due to breast cancer I cant even go back to workforce again due to numbers of hospital appointments and procedures I needed to attend due to my primary health condition which exacerbated to breast cancer. On my TPD I tried to explain to my assessor who handled my case that my primary health condition of Cowden Syndrome is a very rare and serious case which can escalate into a cancer in breast, thyroid, ovary (the top 3) when they rejected first my claim way back in the beginning of 2022. Which I even told them with the new diagnosis that I had last 30/08/2019 with regards to my breast cancer (through my lawyers) I will not be able to come back fully already in the workforce due to the severity of my primary condition and that the medical people that handles my cases needed to monitor me for who knows how many times in a month to make sure it wont even exacerbate to another type of cancer. I am already having a severe stress and depression caused by AIA Insurance for being incompetent and being heartless regarding the situation I am already going through. If I even have the choice I wouldnt even go with AIA and this stuffs because I rather to work and earn money to support myself yet I cant do it because of this rare medical condition I had which I never even wanted at all!! AIA look on the bloody medical evidences, the main health condition, not because it didnt directly said that this and that according to your books. Where is your heart AIA people?! many people who got insurance with you are suffering because of how heartless and incompetent the people you all had!! December 19th 2022 Update: 6 months and after all, it is rejected If theres a zero star, that is the best to give you all AIA people! You guys were all heartless people! Today I just received an email from my assessor saying that unfortunately with the medical information that you guys have on file doesnt support it in connection with my claim?! wth?! what medical information you guys want?! I had been through a lot of medical procedures relating to my ongoing medical health issues and yet you guys will tell me it isnt enough to be sufficient to support my claim?! like what the crap?! what else do you guys want?! for us to die before you will give the money?! it is not about the money for leisure, it is for us to support our ongoing medical treatment, expenses, bills, and even to fix my soon to be broken car!! Thank you AIA for screwing me up not once but twice!! you all bunch of heartless people and i just wish this situation doesnt happen to your own family in the future!!2 comments

Paying for a service that isn't provided to you and this is supposed to be fair!?
6 months now since I made my income protection claim and its excuse after excuse. Asking for information that they already have.. not calling back when they tell you they will.. my so called "assessor" that I rarely hear from telling me that I was put on a priority list but then told by another incompetent employee that that was not the case.. I had to go back to work earlier than expected just so I could cover my rent still with a busted elbow. This has seriously caused mental health issues for myself and there is no way getting through to them. Just another big business taking and taking but never giving. Stay away at all costs!

The worst, most useless and incompetent company I have ever dealt with!!
I have lodged an income protection more than 6 months ago. Still not resolved. Only time during this period that I heard from AIA is when I rang. Then I held on for up to 45mins at a time and often got cut off & had to ring again. No response to my emails, being promised by customer service that my case manager (name withheld) would ring me back but NOTHING! Excuses all the time. My case manager delayed requesting documents and then requested documents that have already been submitted a month before. In September she said she had all the docume...Read more
nts needed & sent it in for evaluation. This claim has been dragging on for months and in the meantime I am broke. I have to borrow money off friends and cannot pay them back. I barely scrape by and am going backwards fast. On 25 May I got an email saying: We note that you have been in touch to ask for an update on the assessment of your Income Protection claim, and that you have been waiting for a response for some time. Your claim has now been placed on an escalation list, so the outstanding work can be addressed as soon as possible. This is likely to take 1-2 weeks, and we will keep you advised of any developments in due course. Because I knew they would not keep me up to date (they never do) I rang them on Monday, 9 Dec, after the two week passed. I got told that the assessor decided to do a bit more work on my claim. I did not want to talk to my case manager then as she proved of no help in the last 6+ months. I asked to speak to her manager and the guy (name withheld) promised that he would get her manager (name withheld) to ring me back before the end of this week. I rang today (13 Dec). Not surprising, the manager was not available, and the guy of Monday (name withheld) lied to the woman I spoke to (name withheld) and said that he did not say on Monday that he would get the manager to ring me. And apparently my claim is still on the register and will be dealt with when they get to it. I am absolutely appalled about how AIA treat people in difficulty while they are happy to take their money. I have paid insurance premiums to them for more than 7 years. They are robbing people and playing with their lives. Not only are they robbing people but also lying by saying they are committed to making a change in peoples lives. Unless of course they mean the change is to destroy others, then it would be the truth. All I can say is that God does not sleep. I have left this in His hands now. Because I as a human cannot do anything about it, no matter what I do. AIA just drags things out, ignores me, leaves me hanging because the longer they delay my claim, the longer they can keep my money while I am suffering at this end. What do they care? They do not have to worry how they are going to pay for their next meal. I think REST has to take responsibility as well for allowing their members to be put through hell by this useless insurance company. Am not surprised (but am also glad) that they changed to another insurance company.3 comments

They are quick to take your money, awful if you want to make changes to your policy. My experience was that its easy to make changes as long as you buy more cover but I could not get them to make amendments to reduce. I ended being forced to cancel which is a pity as I entered into a level policy and ended up loosing a lot.

Horrendous and needlessly stressful
My payments are constantly late, my assessor Emma has never once contacted me, I get told wrong information constantly. I'm under the threat of eviction now because once again AIA have delayed payment again and when I rang the second time about this one payment I wasn't put on to a supervisor like I asked, was told empty platitudes and no closer to getting the payment which is now seriously delayed. I'm currently doing a graded return to work after a brain injury from a assault and the constant extra stress added by this terrible incompetent company is horrendous and hampering my recovery

Worst insurance Ever
So I have been with REST for 29 years. Paid all my dues and had to have emergency surgery which have left me out of the work environment for over 2 years. I didn't think at the time yet was reminded i could claim IP protection for my injury. Well claim put in back in June 2022, 150 days + and still not finalised as of 9/11/2019. I waited patiently, was asked after 100 days for additional information, told I would receive a call on numerous occasions by both the assessor and her boss and didn't get the call back. Was told by one of their emp...Read more
loyees (name withheld) that it wasn't her problem and told by her supervisor that my cover is correct. IP Cover was worked out on my income when i was not working, not the income that i was previously earning which is what is was paying the premium for. In short I was covered for $6,700 per month earnings (which was NOT set by myeslf but by REST and AIA) and have been offered approx (both assessor nor supervisor had any idea how much my payment would be exactly yet said I must accept the claim or nothing (the supervisor tried to strong arm me and say he needed a yes or no answer now, only a "yes or no" the Assessor gave me 5 days to do so (emailed me). So now here is the break down. Enjoy and make your own mind up here about the fair and reasonable behaviour of this business. So my premium I pay weekly is $57.04. This is for coverage of approx 90k per year. I have paid this premium for the last 5 years. The premium payment AIA offered me based on the figures quickly rattled off by the assessor (so you couldn't get them) came to a total of $70 per week. So a net income protection payment of $12.96 weekly for 29 years of dedication. AFCA notified and going from there. I would not ever use this insurance company and am very displeased that REST have given their business to some insurance company only concerned with taking money off someone and not helping in a time of need. $12.96 per week cover (won't even get me 10 minutes of physio). What a slap in the face. I can only say one thing, I pray this does not happen to one of the AIA workers or REST workers because I would not wish this emotional, mental and physical anguish on anyone. I have asked for the insurance to be worked out to see what cover I should have been paying for my coverage as I would like this variance paid back to me over the 29 years with interest. I was told by the AIA supervisor that it wasn't his problem that REST had set the amount and that I needed to take it up with them (which I have) yet AIA are still claiming all innocence even after they have been the ones receiving the additional money for years. Very awful, stressful time.1 comment

Reading all these comments, it's horrific when your waiting on a tpd insurance claim to get approved or rejected, I have supplied all the documents they requested, it's been over the allowed time for them to give me a decision, it's been under review, under review now it's been assessed by their chief medical officer zoran, I think they are going to keep reviewing it until I've killed my self, I can't believe my lack of common decency these people have, I'll say one thing, if I have to pay a lawyer to get what I'm entitled entitled to, I'm gonna spend the rest of my disabled life making sure webpages like this are not the ones I find 7 months after I lodged my claim, I've been researching tpd claims etc and my underwriter and it's only now I've found what I've dreaded... actual legitimate customer reviews, talk about kicking people when they are down...
I'm so sad.and overwhelmed of the phone call to finally comes and here what excuse they use to invalidate my life, trade qualification, career, health and insurance policy, oh my god what will I do

Sorry to hear your story.
I don’t have TPD with AIA. iselect convinced me that being paid income protection until I’m 65 (policy anniversary, not actual birthday, but only a few months in it) was just as good.
Do you have your policy through superannuation? If so, when did you begin the super? My super is from 1994, and the TPD definitions are certainly tougher now.
Do you have terminal illness benefit? I have that with AIA, but they refused to talk with my wife when I was terminally ill in a coma (surgeon and specialist both have put this in writing).
Have you gone through AFCA? It’s a free service. You can look up past case decisions online. Look carefully at your relevant TPD definitions in the correct product disclosure statement. The older definitions are easier to meet.
I really hope it all works out for you.

Hi Rhys, go straight to AFCA. They will look after for you. Their number is 1800 931 678. You can tell them about the stress that AIA are causing you so that you can remove yourself a bit and concentrate on your health. I hope it all goes well.
brett H.asked
Is it legal for a life insurer to refuse to start a claim without the claim form being filled in by the claimant?
I couldn’t read or write owing to my medical condition (ie the sole reason for needing to make a claim). Section 7 of the life Insurance code of Practice covers clients experiencing disability. As well Australia has anti discrimination legislation and the commonwealth disability discrimination act. I would have thought that by refusing to accept a claim in a format I could access, the insurer is in breach of both legislation and their code of conduct.
