Philips S5050 Electric Shaver - it’s ok for the price
We’ve bought the Philips S5050 Electric Shaver last June and had been using it ever since. It’s ok for the price but it’s not as good as other shaver we’ve had. The blade isn’t very sharp - doesn’t leave a clean cut after shaving. The battery seems to run out quicker compares to other model. It’s not a very high quality product.

Very disappointing model
I have had several Philips rotary shavers over the last 50+ years, this one I am sad to say is a lemon. The S5050 replaced my previous 5000 series, so to compare: The cutters are about the same size, the head area is now much larger with too much gap between the edges of the cutters and the outside frame making it difficult / impossible to get close under the nose or neatly up to sideburns. The total cutting area, while appearing larger is in fact smaller as the face is not a flat area and having to follow the face contours actually reduces the...Read more
area of cut. The cutters only pivot in two planes, not all around as previously, leading to a cutter edge prone to catching into the skin fold. The cutters no longer provide a close cut, after about 4 hours I need another shave. The general design appears ok, just the head needs to be redesigned and offered as a free replacement to people who have already made the error of purchasing this shaver.Purchased in February 2021 at The Good Guys Physical store for A$80.00.

Excellent
After struggling to make my teenager to shave with a manual shaver I bought him Philips AquaTouch S5050. Now we have one less argument at home and one very clean shaven teenager. Very easy to use, doesn't irritate the skin, produces really clean shave and very easy to clean (even for a teenager!).

Does the Job
I use this shaver every day. does a reasonable job Dry, and a better job wet. Not really happy with the separate trimmer. battery time is reasonable... but recharge takes 8 hours.
I have a tough growing stubble, so it does the job. at least I don't get cut as with a razor.
this is my 3rd Philips, my At 890 wet dry was just ok; it died after 3 years, however my HQ7380/B dry shaver is still going after 5 years, have replaced cutting blades twice, And is my back up.
All in all pretty good for the price.

Not a bad shaver could be better
Not as described on paper, better as a wet shaver, at times accidentally switching off while saving. The actual head is a little large and doesn’t quite shave properly. Unfortunate.

Don't bother.
Full disclosure: My first electric shaver was a Philips, some sixty years ago. I liked the look of it but when it gave a poor shave I ditched it and bought a Braun.
Stupidly, last month I neglected to pack my Braun lead when going on vacation and was forced to buy a replacement shaver at the airport to tide me over. The retail outlet only sold Philips so I had to get this shaver.
The good news is that it does shave. The bad news is that, just like the one I had half a century ago, it makes a lousy job of it.
Instead of a manly four-str...Read more
oke noise that gives you confidence that it's doing something it emits an almost inaudible whirring just like a battery motor that's out of charge. After some five minutes of rotating the heads in all directions it has collected a fair amount of bristle debris, but unlike other shavers I have owned I can still feel the stubble on my face: ten minutes later it's as if I haven't shaved at all. And that's without mentioning the bits under the nose that the circular cutters don't reach very well. Philips have stuck to a rotary technology that was not up to it years ago, and it shows.5 comments

Fancy looking but doesn't work
After 5 weeks of trail i have had to religate this shaver into the cupboard never to be used again.
This shaver has twice the cutting area, half the speed and takes twice as long to achieve half as good a job as my 20 year old remington. I have tried using it wet and dry, wet is more comfortable but the results are the same...poor.
I expected a lot more from phillips but they have focussed more on gimmicks and styling rather than performance.
Not sure why i bought a wet/dry shaver anyway the whole idea of an electric shaver is convenience and portability and not have to be bothered with wetting ones face.

Does the job for me
After some 40 years of using a blade, and after some research i purchased this shaver. For me it is more than adequate, but i do not think i would use it 'dry'. Ok it has only been a month but so far so good. It was just $89 on sale at Myer, normally $199!!!...(but $99 everywhere else) . Having said that there is no way i would have paid the original price of this shaver

little disapointed
i was expecting a shaver that works with water (that's the good part ) but it takes almost twice as long to shave with this thing than other shavers (wet or dry). It shaves in a patchy manor and i spend more time going over the same spot trying to get a consistent finish. i like the wet idea and fact i gan just put it under the tap to clean but shaving performance is poor.

at might help getting better results. First of all, we'd like to advise to make circular movements, since this ensures that the hair is approached from different directions. This increases the chance of catching the hair and results in greater hair removal efficiency. If you move the shaver in circles, you have a bigger chance of catching and cutting hair because you approach it from both vertical and horizontal directions. Secondly, it is also advised to pre-trim before shaving in case you haven't shaved for a couple of days. If you've already tried all this and it still isn't working the way you'd want to, please feel free to contact our product specialists on 1300 363 391 if you're located in Australia or 0800 658 224 if you're located in New Zealand. Furthermore, you can always reach out to us on Facebook or Twitter (@PhilipsCare).Thank you for thew reply ..i have tried all of the above and still have to shave for twice the amount of time..... . it just seems to not pick up and cut the hairs effectively...(just my thoughts for your R&D Team ) :)

My old Braun is better
I bought this because I wasn't able to get replacement heads for my old Philips Wet and Dry shaver ( the cost was more than a new shaver ). I know that switching to a new shaver takes a few weeks for your face to adjust, and that electric shaver will never give as close a shave as a razor. After using this new model a few times the results were a bit average. I'd spend a long time trying to get an acceptable result, but still felt that I hadn't shaved. I tried it with shaver oil as well, which conveniently clumps the stubble together so cleanin...Read more
g is really easy, but still haven't achieved a close shave. My old Braun gives a closer shave but it's not a wet and dry model. I also tried a pre shave exfoliating scrub before using the Philips shaver, but still didn't achieve a close shave. There's always trouble areas that get missed. I asked the saleslady in one shop which rotary shaver gave the closest shave, and was told the highest priced model. I doubt spending big bucks will give me a close shave. And also, the shaver sounds weak and underpowered, even when fully charged. I tried it on a three day growth and it eventually gave a result. I wouldn't recommend it, don't get swayed by the clever marketing, and remember that every face is different, so it might work great for some people but not necessarily others. It's a backup shaver now.2 comments

Design average and appears to have a short life
The s5050/06 Looks great can be used in wet or dry. The on off button is located perfectly I switch it off at least 3 to 6 times while shaving, guess im in training, not ideal. But due to the fact I brought this less than 12 months ago and now it doesn't work I'm thinking someone's taken a short cut. However on that note I wish phillips all the best and thank you for the older reliable models of shavers and other items I have purchased from you in the past.

Best shaver I have used
I was a little wary of rotary shavers but when I got this as a gift I had to try it. What a great little machine! Easily the smoothest, most comfortable, hi quality shave I have had from an electric. My previous shaver was a Braun which I'd had for 10 years but this is so superior it's not funny. It's also ridiculously quiet. The beard trimmer is excellent, sharp and accurate because it's so easy to see when in use. My only quibble is that it doesn't come in a hard case like the Braun does, which means the trimmer (it's a snap-on rather than attached to the shaver) would be easy to lose. That's a minor issue though. I love this razor like a secret child from my wilder days. Don't read anything into that, it's just an expression.

I have been looking for the head replacement for my partner and am having trouble. Am I able to get links to buy or shop to buy it from? I went to the shaver shop was told they don't sell it and it's an old model (despite being only 2 years old or less).

Sounds a bit strange, I usually go to my local Shaver Shop, or failing that search online eg Amazon/eBay. I found a site called the Shaver Hut which did stock hard to find replacement shaver heads. Also, try the Philips website.
