Philips S5050 Electric Shaver - it’s ok for the price
We’ve bought the Philips S5050 Electric Shaver last June and had been using it ever since. It’s ok for the price but it’s not as good as other shaver we’ve had. The blade isn’t very sharp - doesn’t leave a clean cut after shaving. The battery seems to run out quicker compares to other model. It’s not a very high quality product.

Frustrating Head attachment
Generally the shaver functions as it should. I have used Philips shavers for as long as I remember- since purchasing this one at the start of the year I’m now looking at other options. When shaving the head just keeps falling off the shaver causing a fair bit of frustration.
Purchased in January 2021 at Shaver Shop for A$120.00.

Trimming attachment problem
I purchased this shaver six months ago and I’ve been trying to get used to using it but just cannot. The detachable trimmer is awkward to use. You have to tug off the shaving head and push on the trimmer. It is an awkward and time wasting exercise and you run the possibility of damaging the shaver every time you use it. I’ve taken to keeping my good old shaver handy and using the trimmer on that instead of struggling with this awkward contraption. The shave it delivers is no better than my old shaver so I’m just not winning. I wish I hadn’t bought it.
Purchased in September 2021 at Costco NSW.

Philips 90 day money back guarantee worked well
What constitutes a good shaver is obviously very subjective. Bought the Philips S5550/44 as a gift based on a friend's recommendation, specifically because it had the Turbo function. The recipient however, still found it underpowered and said it took too long (longer than one battery charge) to get a clean shave. They were a razors user before. The Philips 90 day money back guarantee program worked well though; I rang to get a return authorization number, filled out their form and included the receipt and product, shipped it off to NSW for $12.45 with AusPost & tracking, and got the refund in my bank account 7 days after they received my package. Only wish Philips' products could be returned locally.

Disappointing from a previously reliable shaver company
I bought this shaver in March 2017 for $199 at a shaver shop in Melbourne, having owned 3 previous models of Philips shavers and been happy with them. Importantly for me, apart from shaving short regrowth there also has to be a beard trimmer for my beard. Previous models of Philips did a reasonable job. This one has a new design of clip-on trimmer that stopped working after a year. Philips replaced the trimmer (after a 2 week wait) but the replacement also failed after a year (almost to the day!). I discovered the cause (whiskers get trapped in...Read more

Not effective at shaving in my experience
I bought this product using travel insurance after my bag was stolen overseas. I have used Phillips electric shavers since the early 1980s and this model was available in the store at the time I needed one. Unfortunately it manages to cut my skin but not shave effectively (I have to get a mirror and scissors to get the bits it misses).

Closest shave
I recently purchased my third phillips shaver and this is the best one yet. It gave a nice quick clean shave. Battery life was a little less than usual with around 15 shaves per charge. I use shaver every morning and expect it will go well while travelling as have the others. It is easily cleaned in seconds and it dries quicker than previous shavers which had a tendency to retain water internally.
Thoroughly recommend it. It may have been of greater benefit to me as I have been using the same type of razor for over ten years which has allowed my skin to adapt.

So far a good little shaver
I have been a Philips rotary head electric shaver user for as long as I can remember. I've had a few over the years and I don't use any other shaver at all.
My previous shaver had worn through two sets of blades and I had learnt to sharpen the blades, but also learned they can only be sharpened effectively once or twice, after that they don't stay sharp so I guess the hard metal must be gone. A new set of of genuine Philips blades were going to cast around AUD$140, I paid this kind of price a few years back but not again, I had no idea how ...Read more
long the battery had left in it. I looked at the normal reviews by users including Product Review and bought the Philips Series 5000 from Costco (cheapest and a life time warranty thrown in for free). It cost $160 which was enough, it would have been easy to spend a lot more but my experience is the expensive models do not represent value for money. I have now been using it every day for a almost 2 weeks and can say it works fine. Good points - quiet, light and easy to handle, gives a quick but good shave with no scratching or pulling, the charger cord plugs into the shaver not via any intermediate rack, dead easy to clean by rinsing it in the shower, so far the battery is still going on the original charge, has a separate beard trimmer that plugs in the same place as the shaver head and words OK, comes with a protective travel case thats no too big. Philips provide a replacement set of blades which doubles the life of the shaver at no additional cost - nice. Not so good points - must be cleaned often, no more then every 3 shaves for me or the shaver is too clogged to cut properly, the separate trimmer has no place to store it when travelling. I could not believe the quantity of little boxes inside little boxes used for packaging.Purchased in August 2021 at Costco ACT, Canberra for A$159.00.

This is crap
I have done a review on this product already, on youtube. It doesn't even cut my hairs and wont clean using that "all-in-one" cleaner. It wouldn't even cut the shorter hairs. It takes me 30minutes+ every time I shave and I always end up getting the hand held to finish it off. The instructions were pathetic. Very expensive shaver for a very poor result.

Very disappointing model
I have had several Philips rotary shavers over the last 50+ years, this one I am sad to say is a lemon. The S5050 replaced my previous 5000 series, so to compare: The cutters are about the same size, the head area is now much larger with too much gap between the edges of the cutters and the outside frame making it difficult / impossible to get close under the nose or neatly up to sideburns. The total cutting area, while appearing larger is in fact smaller as the face is not a flat area and having to follow the face contours actually reduces the...Read more
area of cut. The cutters only pivot in two planes, not all around as previously, leading to a cutter edge prone to catching into the skin fold. The cutters no longer provide a close cut, after about 4 hours I need another shave. The general design appears ok, just the head needs to be redesigned and offered as a free replacement to people who have already made the error of purchasing this shaver.Purchased in February 2021 at The Good Guys Physical store for A$80.00.

Excellent shaver at a good price
After many years of using cartridge blade razors with shave oil, and with an extended overseas holiday coming up, I thought I'd treat myself to a battery-operated travel shaver. I've always had quite a heavy beard, and the only real way for me to get a decent all-day shave was to use the aforementioned cartridge razor. However, whilst the result was a close shave (literally!), I'd often nick myself and end up with a sore face.
In my late teens I was given a small Philips twin head battery-operated (4 x AA's) travel shaver (model SC7970, which ...Read more

Does the Job
I use this shaver every day. does a reasonable job Dry, and a better job wet. Not really happy with the separate trimmer. battery time is reasonable... but recharge takes 8 hours.
I have a tough growing stubble, so it does the job. at least I don't get cut as with a razor.
this is my 3rd Philips, my At 890 wet dry was just ok; it died after 3 years, however my HQ7380/B dry shaver is still going after 5 years, have replaced cutting blades twice, And is my back up.
All in all pretty good for the price.

best used dry
this is my first electric shaver after using razors for 20 years so i cant compare it with other electric shavers. after having it for 2 weeks. i found it is best used dry without shaving cream. it will also leave some strands that you can redo over until it gets it or just finish it off with a razor. i like that it is water proof and it does not take forevef to charge. i like how it is light weight and easy to clean. and finally, i like how the skin is protected well from cuts

Don't bother.
Full disclosure: My first electric shaver was a Philips, some sixty years ago. I liked the look of it but when it gave a poor shave I ditched it and bought a Braun.
Stupidly, last month I neglected to pack my Braun lead when going on vacation and was forced to buy a replacement shaver at the airport to tide me over. The retail outlet only sold Philips so I had to get this shaver.
The good news is that it does shave. The bad news is that, just like the one I had half a century ago, it makes a lousy job of it.

oke noise that gives you confidence that it's doing something it emits an almost inaudible whirring just like a battery motor that's out of charge. After some five minutes of rotating the heads in all directions it has collected a fair amount of bristle debris, but unlike other shavers I have owned I can still feel the stubble on my face: ten minutes later it's as if I haven't shaved at all. And that's without mentioning the bits under the nose that the circular cutters don't reach very well. Philips have stuck to a rotary technology that was not up to it years ago, and it shows.5 comments

i never had this problem. maybe something is broken in the latching mechanism or maybe you need to push it in tighter. if it is still under warranty, send it back to them
.
If you have your purchase docket/receipt, contact Philips and should it be broken they should be able to supply a new head. Note that the head needs to be clipped on at the back properly or it will not go on/stay on. Even if you don't have the necessary proof of purchase, contact them and see if they will help you. Do you remember if you registered with them for warranty after the purchase?
