Vacuum Cleaners Buying Guide
Our buying guide will explain which type of vacuum cleaner would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.
Red light no suction
I didnt realise this was so common. Wish I had before we purchased a Bosch.
We weren't happy with the level of suction at first but thought that we had spent the money and if we looked after it it'll last us forever.
Within weeks of passing warranty we started seeing the red light.
Wasn't much better than a broom to start, now it's more of a scraper.
If this is so common surely there's a common solution, or should I be looking for a new vacuum?
Purchased at Joyce Mayne Physical store for $600.00.

Very Disappointed
This is the most expensive and the worst performing vacuum cleaner I have ever purchased. I paid over $700 for it and now avoid using it until my floors are really bad because it is so frustrating and difficult to use. The main issue I have is the sensor self cleaning light constantly comes on while the vacum is in use which means it constantly turns on and off. I have tried washing the filters but this doesn’t help & they are awkward to wash as repellent to water.

Disappointed and enraged
I’m writing to put a complaint in to the Bosh Company. I bought a Bosh vacuum cleaner on the 18th April 2017 from Harvey Normans at Gepps Cross South Australia. We were told by the sales assistant it was the best on the market, at the price of $619. We expected at this price it would last longer than 9 months. I religiously clean the filters every time I use the vacuum cleaner, tapping the filter to get the dust out, then using a banister broom to get it clean, then once a month my husband uses his air compressor to blow the filters out (it’s a...Read more
ctually in my phone to remind me to do so). We got told to do this by the sales assistant to keep it clean. So by 9 months it started to stop and self-clean every time I used it, every couple of minutes. So I rang Harvey Norma and told them the issue. They then told me to get in touch with Prestige who does the warranty. I did this and they rang and said the filter was blocked and that I need to wash it in water and let it air dry for 3 to 4 days. As a result of the problem not being electrical or mechanical we have to pay the $70 service free plus $124 for a new filter if we want one. So here is my problem, at no time was I told that if the warranty only covered the electrical and mechanical: 1. By either Harvey Normans or the service people 2. At only 9 months old this vacuum cleaner should be, for the price, running like it was when it was new 3. We were told that by cleaning the filters at least once a week it would run for few years and not need replacing. (I clean two times a week plus blow out once a month). 4. This is the second Bosh item I have bought in the last two years, the first was a washing machine that I had, which I had a lot of trouble with your company to even believe me that it was faulty and accused me of using the wrong detergent that we went back to the Good Guys store and complained and thankfully they agreed to allow us to swap it with a different brand in which we have had no problems with even when using the exact same detergent. So I feel Bosh should for the service and a new filter as no other bag less vacuum cleaner that my friends or family have ever need to be washed or even air compressed at all. Had I known that I would have to wash and dry the filter, even though I’m happy to brush the filter I would not have bought this vacuum cleaner at all. The only reason we did was because the sales assistant said she had one and that she just brushes the filter clean once a month. I have never in the last 40 years ever heard of any other vacuum cleaner needing so much attention to keep it working.2 comments

So good we bought two, and the mother in law bought one as well
We had a Dyson. When we looked to upgrade, we wondered what else was out there? Do we just go Dyson because its a Dyson?
The salesperson at Harvey Norman showed us the Bosch. When I couldnt move it across the carpet due to the suction, we bought it then and there.
We got it home and it was AWESEOME!
The suction was great. We have a white fluffy ball that leaves smaller white fluffy balls where she lies down. The power head made it easy to pick up all the dog fur.

Worst vacuum ever. Wish I had my $850 back.
This vacuum generates so much anger and frustration in me when I use it.. I've never been so tormented by an appliance before! The black unit came with two heads. In the first 12 months, the "animal head" stopped spinning and became compeltely useless. Mind you, it was dodgy from the day we bought it and we tried to talk to the shop about it, who told us it was fine and the spinning thing was meant to spin intermittently... When the animal head stopped working entirely shortly after, we opted for the second head that comes with the unit. Howeve...Read more
r the two wheels on that have now fallen off and the whole head is in four parts. I have resorted to Gaffa taping the whole thing back together because without it, I'm on the floor vacuuming with the hose. This, from an $850 unit?? Are you for real Bosch? I did call your customer support a few times when the unit was in warranty only to be told I needed to wash the filters properly to get the machine to stop self cleaning. Well, that doesn't work, I promise! The machine constantly self cleans. And then it gets stuck on self clean mode and you have to turn it on and off again to get it to reset. It's comical. After this totally woeful buying experience, I'm never buying Bosch again. And they used to be my fave brand. We did so much research before we purchased this machine. Disappointed doesn't even come close.. Of course, the unit is way out of warranty now and we're left with a useless machine and we're back on the market for another. So frustrated. This just shouldn't be allowed really - I feel robbed.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Dont waste your money, I would not buy a bosch again, same problem as others!
Was a great vacuum, until, like many others, I cant vacuum more than 3 meters without it overheating and going into self clean. Meticulously cleaned the vacuum since new. Obviously a design fault and Bosch don't want to know about a $850 vacuum that isn't even a year out of its miserly 2 year warranty.

A vacuum cleaner which can't cope with household dust!
I've just contacted Bosch regarding my machine and then read all the reviews here.
It seems the self-cleaning mode is the problem.
It cannot cope with a well kept house, 2 adults and a small dog.
Vacuum has become a time consuming and very stressful chore, as the machine stops every meter to clean itself and then stops all together.
It's been scrupulously maintained (cleaning, washing and drying filter), changed the HEPA filter and nothing seems to work.
I've come to the conclusion that this has been a big miss by Bosch, a lemon!

I hate this vacuum cleaner since I bought it
I had the problem with the self cleaning function from the day I purchased it. But when I complained at Harvey Norman they told me I have to clean the filter better. So I spent a long time cleaning it but it didn't help. Finally they accepted the failure and sent it away for repair as it was within the warranty. After I got it back it was working perfectly for maybe 2 months and then the same problem started again and it is even worse than before. The self cleaning goes off every 10-15 seconds. It is just terrible, I have 260 m2 to clean. I hate this vacuum cleaner. The warranty expired so I will probably throw it away soon. I would really expect much more from a Bosch product for $799.

Hopeless
Used it in a 3/1 house twice since buying it a couple of weeks ago. Now doesn't even do half of one room with out the sensor control flashing on 2 twice and then stays on red and powers down. Have cleaned the bag less container on each occasion and the filters are perfectly clean - only been used twice. Poor design/manufacture.

Almost there as far as vacuums go.
We were looking for a new vacuum cleaner and had set our sights on the new Dyson Big Ball. But after closer inspection of it we changed and went for this Bosch BG5225AU. After reading many negative reviews of this cleaner we were sceptical to say the least but I must say that after 3 months of using it I can only say it was in our minds a much better choice. So far we have had none of the filter issues that others have mentioned and must say that it is way easy to clean out than our previous bagless. Also unlike the new Dyson it has robust cli...Read more
ps and locks that don't fly open spilling contents everywhere. I do regularly clean the filters, both the metal filter and the big air cleaner type filter that sits in the middle of the removable canister and so far it is certainly providing us with a much better vacuuming experience than anything else we have owned. Is it easy to manouver? Yes and No, it tends to be a little heavy to pull along and it's manouverability is so so, but the suction and cleaning power are outstanding. We have some carpet tile floors and you have to be careful not to lift them up if you use the higher settings. It feels like a strong unit, quite different to the Dyson which feels like plastic on a cheap chinese toy. All in all so far it's been great and apart from being a little heavy it's almost there.1 comment

Terrible
Very unhappy after purchasing this fairly expensive cleaner. It is easy to manouver, and has fantastic suction, however it works for about 45 second and then turns off for about 60 seconds, apparently to self clean, making it very frustrating to clean Even the smallest room. Had i realised this was going to be the case, i would not have purchased it

Hate this vacuum.
It constantly stops and has a filter error even though it's clean. I've had it for a year and can't wait to throw it out. It's bulky, heavy and the cleaning heads are crap - hair gets caught in the head and its so big it can't go under any furniture. I had a Dyson before and it was far superior. For the price I paid I expect a lot more.

Rubbish stay away sensor comes on every thirty seconds. I have washed the filters endlessly with the same issue. I'm sure Bosch are aware of this issue as you can see on this site by other customers. Bosch I will never buy one of your appliances again or recommend it to anyone.

Problems since day one
Worst vacuum I have even turned on, I purposely purchased it because it had the wider hose, I spend more time Jamming something up the end of it to unblock it than I do vacuuming the floor. I have wanted to throw it in the fire many times. I know that if I return it to Harvey Norman that they will tell me that the filters are dirty or some other crap excuse instead of simply, we sold you a piece of crap.

Probably as good as it gets.
Although I have resisted adding reviews and comments to this site due entirely to what I consider out of line and erroneous comments and assumptions by moderating staff. I feel on this occasion I should offer my views on this Vacuum. Purchased entirely on a 'impractical' Bosch advert, where this vac. Was shown sucking up pond type pebbles and offer HEPA exhaust. I thought if it did that it's worth a look.

tivities, so after using commercial type back packs and sundry build sites cleaners which spew out a good 20% of the finer dust in the exhaust took a punt on this Bosh. The Bosch relaxxx has shown to have a remarkable suck. Using the rotating brush head would lift the carpet on the back stroke affording a pretty thorough clean. The dust removal was more than double we could get on the back pac. It's not all beer and skittles though. As noted by reviewer LHM it's a bit of a dedicated effort to clean the filter. And yes, very messy if if just tipped into the trash and tapped against the wall, etc. Really needs to go outside and or stick a plastic bag over it all. Some ladies find this awkward as well as the bayonet fitting to the lid. And yes, the casters are pathetic as " Berlin wall" said. However, the large diameter strong hose (with really good connecters) has a lovely sweeping uninterrupted air flow which gives the good vacuum. The HEPA works very well. BUT it needs to be changed. Bosch say every 6 month or so. This was missed by us and two and a half years later the "clean filter" rattle would go off constantly along with complaints by the users. Close inspection showed the big Car type air filter was quite solidly blocked and needed internal scraping. The HEPA was totally black and disintegrating. A call to Bosch and two days later we had new, yes expensive, easy to fit filters. The result? Well, incredible, back to new. All the winging stopped as did the use of the old back pac. And please don't bag the sales people. A good many of them are there because no-one else wants them. But there are the few that will help and actually know their stuff. These are hard to access as every one else also seeks their attention, leaving the rest standing about with finger up nostril.1 comment

Terrible vacuum
I have never used a worse machine, this vac is so hard to maneuver the cord continually retracts the part where you hold your hand is so hard to hold and pinches your skin. I always end up in pain after using it. I have been a professional five star cleaner and I know what works and this doesn't. The sales person puts it on the lowest suction during sales pitch so it sounds really quiet but when you get home and put the head on it is not quiet. and they won't help it looks like they respond when you read the reviews but it doesn't go any further. Their sales rep when I first rang said the machine I brought was more than a year old when I gave her my serial number and proceeded to tell me she has a vax and it is the best vac ever they can't even get their own people on board. This is a very expensive vac and you will be wasting your money.2 comments

Shocking Does Not Vacuum Pet Hair Weak Suction Very Noisy
Very disappointed in this unit, paid $800. Researched for a good vacuum that would vacuum pet hair off carpet. This unit said perfect for pet owners yeah right. IT IS HOPELESS i have to keep going over and over and does NOT remove the hair or anything. After i brush with my foot and heaps more hair comes out. Yes i have cleaned the head the suction is strong but doesnt vacuum. VERY NOISY not like its advertised very quiet. Only good for my tiled areas but like i said very noisy. About to throw in the bin only had for a year and im over it. Had a bosch before and didnt last long that was $450 i should of NEVER gone with this brand again. Quite happy now to do the vacuuming.
Went shopping pretty certain I would come home with a Dyson but after testing several brands in the store the Bosch was a clear winner. Big winner was the noise level, just so much quieter than the rest, and now having used it for 2 weeks I am more than happy with the results. The filtration is excellent and cleaning is a simple task. Well done Bosch.

This overall this is the best vacuum I have used extremely quite and powerful much better cleaning power then mybold Dyson the only downfall is the filter in the bin catches more dust then the bin itself and requires cleaning after each use old dyson didn't so close to a perfect vacuum I would of given 5 stars if filter setup was better.

After reading all of the reviews I was not dissapointed
I have used Dysons and whilst they are impressive nothing beats German engineering. This thing will lift the carpet off the floor and picked up a huge amount of dust from carpets vacuumed only a day prior. Easy to empty and very well thought out with a range of attachments provided best machine I have ever owned!
