Cannon heater a lemon
See my previous review from 7 years ago. I can't believe this heater is still being sold. I don't know who owns or operates Cannon, but my experience was that their "warranty" was covered by Sampford IXL. Seems as though once Cannon send a heater out they have no responsibility at all. I had a couple of years of issues with a Cannon heater that never worked. They are a piece of junk. Replaced it with another inbuilt gas heater that has never missed a beat. I feel so sorry for anyone who has bought this heater in the last 7 years since I did and posted a review here.
Purchased in June 2021 for A$4,000.00.

Worst heater
Just had the heater serviced after literally years of repairs. Two hours after service the same issue resurfaced. It switches itself off and on. If I had to add up the total amount spent on this defunct heater, I could have purchased a new one. Going online to find a better brand. Can’t believe it’s still being sold with the same fault as everyone writes about.

Cannon heater igniter - what rubbish
The igniter unit on a 5 year old inbuilt Fitzroy heater has failed. I called Cannon Customer Service - the warranty is 3 years and they expressed the view that this is a reasonable lifetime. I expressed the view that under Australian Consumer Law that I do not believe that 3 years represents acceptable quality - their response was that they believe it is. What do other people think? Given that it is supposedly designed to work in this environment, and is used used possibly 4 or 5 times a week for 6 months of the year, I am not convinced.
Would appreciate any comments

temperamental heater
I have had this heater for about six years. The first years I had to replace several significant parts. Of its performance since then I would say it's great when it works but is very temperamental. I need to get it cleaned every year or it stops working. Apparently if a tiny cobweb gets into a tiny part the whole thing shuts down (a serviceman told me). I paid $4000 plus for this heater and would not replace it with the same brand. I have had to get it fixed at least once a year since I had it installed.

Poor reliability
It's a great looking heater and when it's working it's wonderful, but we have had the heater for two years now and it is proving to be unreliable.
Shortly after install we had the starting issue that everyone seems to be reporting. If this is a simple adjustment (as commented by the manufacturer), then why isn't this done at the factory? Obviously there is little or no quality control.
Now, less than two years later, the heat won't switch on manually. Is simply starts and then turns off. It will start up using the remote, but when it gets to the set temperature, it starts to beep continuously and switch on and off. Eventually switching off completely. I now have to take time off work to meet with a repair technician.

Keeps going out! No matter what you do.
Every 4 years we have to replace parts on this heater. Turns it self on and off randomly. Once it starts this it does not correct itself. Very frustrating for $3000 + heater . I have seen so many reports online about the same issue we are having. This must be something to be concerned about for the manufacturer...doesn't it?

Worst heater...don't buy!
We have had nothing but problems with these heaters. The first one was installed and after 2 winters of constant call outs (at least 12 with just about every changeable part being changed) with the heater never consistently working during these 2 years (it either wouldn't turn on at all or would turn itself off randomly and then wouldn't turn back on) they finally decided to replace the heater after I had threatened to take them to VCAT. The replacement heater worked for 1 winter and now it isn't working. And they are claiming (without having...Read more
seen the unit) that what the service guy thinks the problem is, isn't. They tried to tell me that it didn't have any warranty as the warranty period started from when the first heater was purchased, not from when the second heater was installed. I wish that we had asked for our money back instead of having the heater replaced. These units and dealing with this company is a nightmare I wouldn't wish upon anyone and now I have to do it all again.1 comment

Not reliable
Have a 2006 Cannon Fitzroy gas log fire which is great when it's working. Had to replace the blue box (control box) in 2012 and have to replace it again 3 years later. Definitely not built to last. Keeping the fan clean is not easy but absolutely necessary as it doesn't work at all if there is any build of fluff etc. We are now without heating for the 2nd time this winter. When it's workng It's also very noisy and rattles for a length of time when turned on.

Nice looking but doesn't work when we need it to!
Purchased this in May 2013 and had the heater installed by a plumber recommended by the store owner [name removed] we bought our heater from. Great looking and powerful heater when it actually work.
We had problem getting it to start within the first few months, but didn't think much about it and keep on trying till it's on. However this has become a real issue and is occurring way more often. It is a total shame to have such heater but could not ignite on a cold freezing night when you need it most, to a point we just gave up!
Seems like this is a common and costly issue from all the reviews, wish I had seen this before deciding on the heater. Very disappointed! The most basic component of a heater - the ignition just don't work!

The issue described can be can be caused by a few things. The ignition spark mechanism may require an adjustment to ensure a consistent spark is provided which will encourage the burner assembly to ignite on first attempt. Lint or dust in the fan venturi can prohibit the ignition process. Low gas pressure can also be attributed to poor ignition. It is strongly recommended to have your heater serviced regularly by one of our accredited service agents. For us to further assist, please contact our head office directly on 1300 727 421 and provide us with your details. This will allow us the opportunity to discuss the matter with you further and to provide you with a solution. Regards, Cannon.Hi Cannon. hat thr unit also shutdown on its own after running for whether it is 5 or 40mins. No longer functional, even on random occasions. The unit itself is very clean but despite that, we do still get it serviced by a licensed plumber and carbon monoxide tested. There are no built up and gas pressure is fine. Got our plumber come back to double check and he identified the error codes, both translated to the Pressure Switch fault. This issue has happened since the very early day of purchasing, well truly within warranty. It is very disappointing that a big company like Cannon, never address to rectify the fault since.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Following up from my review on June 2, I asked Sampford to either replace the heater or give me a refund given it rarely works. They agreed to replace the burner bed. Against my better judgement I thought I would give them one more chance to get the heater working. Well, guess what? The heater still does not work after 5 service calls over 3 years! This is ridiculous. This time I am going to insist they replace it or give me a refund, not that I think that replacing will solve the problem. My cousins have the Powerflue and I used to enjoy sitting in front of it while it was running. When it is on, it looks fantastic and effectively warms me up. I do not have a single performance issue with the Powerflue. There is only one thing I do not like about the Powerflue. The price.

Poor product and terrible after sales service
We investigated and bought the Cannon Powerflue on recommendation. Since installation the unit goes goes off as soon as it is slightly windy. Given that winter tends to be windy it means it is off more than on. Initially we thought we could live with it until the problem got fixed. As it rarely stays on now for more than 5 minutes at a time it never heats up and it gets pretty irritating to have to get up as often as every minute to turn it on again.
My main complaint is the after sales service. One month on after installation we have had on...Read more

How do i turn heater on?

You can operate the heater manually by pressing the ON/OFF button once. (Located on the side of the unit)
Or if you have the remote thermostat, select manual mode by pressing the A/M button until Manual appears on the display, then press the up arrow to the desired temperature.
thank you Steve, I managed to get the heater going the pilot was not lighting when I turned the dial however, after letting it rest for a few minutes, it worked. Just being impatient. :)

Hi Heater, when the heater beeps 4 times, the heater turns to safe shutdown mode. It will beep 4 times every 30 seconds to alert you to the fact. Press the ON/OFF button once to restart the heater during this time. Wait at least 20 seconds before attempting to turn the heater on.

we bought a house with this heater but there are no instruction how to turn it on. Can anyone help?

With mine the controls are 4 small buttons on the right side of the unit, top corner, electric start so unit must be plugged in, turned on and have gas valves in on position if you have safety valves in the line .
The top button is the start button and after oressing you will hear the automatic starter ticking rapidly, it should light within 2-4 seconds if gas is connected and flowing .

Dear Potter,
Thank you for your comments and thoughts.... Read more
Cannon Appliances is currently undertaking a Voluntary Safety Check on certain model heaters which were manufactured between March 2001 and October 2009. For certain heaters manufactured between 2001 and 2006 which previously had a safety check performed, and these heaters only, it is possible that the front glass concealing the firebox could slip downwards from its fixed position leaving a small opening which could allow combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, to escape into the room. In order to avoid the potential of this occurring, Cannon Appliances has contacted the owners of these heaters and arranged for a service technician to re-attend, at Cannon’s cost, to inspect the heater and fit glass support spacer brackets to ensure movement of the glass does not take place. As part of any work performed on a gas heating appliance, a safety check must be performed in accordance with the test methods outlined by the governing gas safety regulator. If the heater, or its installation, is found to be unsafe for any reason (for example, because of negative pressure due to exhaust fans in the home, or a faulty chimney) then the law requires the heater to be disabled until such time as the heater and its installation are safe to use. It is at the discretion of the householder should they wish to decline and not have their heater checked, however under strict guidelines Cannon Appliances must report any such occurrences to the Regulator. Cannon Appliances uses external service providers to facilitate the maintenance of these appliances. The service providers are licenced contractors who are not directly affiliated with Cannon. It is an accepted standard industry practice for organisations to utilise the services of suitably qualified and experienced external resources to carry out work of this kind. All manufacturers along with all service providers have a responsibility to act in accordance with the requirements of the gas safety regulator and provide advice in circumstances where it may be considered that safety could be compromised. Cannon believes that safety must always come first, and that all gas heaters should be checked for safety every two years. Kind regards Cannon
