Cannon heater a lemon

published

See my previous review from 7 years ago. I can't believe this heater is still being sold. I don't know who owns or operates Cannon, but my experience was that their "warranty" was covered by Sampford IXL. Seems as though once Cannon send a heater out they have no responsibility at all. I had a couple of years of issues with a Cannon heater that never worked. They are a piece of junk. Replaced it with another inbuilt gas heater that has never missed a beat. I feel so sorry for anyone who has bought this heater in the last 7 years since I did and posted a review here.

Purchased in June 2021 for A$4,000.00.

Worst heater

published

Just had the heater serviced after literally years of repairs. Two hours after service the same issue resurfaced. It switches itself off and on. If I had to add up the total amount spent on this defunct heater, I could have purchased a new one. Going online to find a better brand. Can’t believe it’s still being sold with the same fault as everyone writes about.

Cannon heater igniter - what rubbish

published

The igniter unit on a 5 year old inbuilt Fitzroy heater has failed. I called Cannon Customer Service - the warranty is 3 years and they expressed the view that this is a reasonable lifetime. I expressed the view that under Australian Consumer Law that I do not believe that 3 years represents acceptable quality - their response was that they believe it is. What do other people think? Given that it is supposedly designed to work in this environment, and is used used possibly 4 or 5 times a week for 6 months of the year, I am not convinced.
Would appreciate any comments

temperamental heater

published

I have had this heater for about six years. The first years I had to replace several significant parts. Of its performance since then I would say it's great when it works but is very temperamental. I need to get it cleaned every year or it stops working. Apparently if a tiny cobweb gets into a tiny part the whole thing shuts down (a serviceman told me). I paid $4000 plus for this heater and would not replace it with the same brand. I have had to get it fixed at least once a year since I had it installed.

Poor reliability

published

It's a great looking heater and when it's working it's wonderful, but we have had the heater for two years now and it is proving to be unreliable.
Shortly after install we had the starting issue that everyone seems to be reporting. If this is a simple adjustment (as commented by the manufacturer), then why isn't this done at the factory? Obviously there is little or no quality control.
Now, less than two years later, the heat won't switch on manually. Is simply starts and then turns off. It will start up using the remote, but when it gets to the set temperature, it starts to beep continuously and switch on and off. Eventually switching off completely. I now have to take time off work to meet with a repair technician.

I am now waiting for my fourth service call in less than two years to try and get this heater fixed.

Keeps going out! No matter what you do.

Every 4 years we have to replace parts on this heater. Turns it self on and off randomly. Once it starts this it does not correct itself. Very frustrating for $3000 + heater . I have seen so many reports online about the same issue we are having. This must be something to be concerned about for the manufacturer...doesn't it?

After a number of conversations with IXL rep I discovered the problem to be strike plate related. I changed the strike plate ( which was considerably detiorated and crumbled when touched) and have not had a problem this winter. I hope this continues.

Had this installed 4 years ago and it is so temperamental ! Turns itself off and will not stay lit once this happens the first time ! Has to be left hours before it will light and stay lit . Had a gas tech come to check the lines and says it's definitely the heater !!! It's done this since out of the box . I made 2 calls when it happened but got no real help . DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT !

Not reliable

published

Have a 2006 Cannon Fitzroy gas log fire which is great when it's working. Had to replace the blue box (control box) in 2012 and have to replace it again 3 years later. Definitely not built to last. Keeping the fan clean is not easy but absolutely necessary as it doesn't work at all if there is any build of fluff etc. We are now without heating for the 2nd time this winter. When it's workng It's also very noisy and rattles for a length of time when turned on.

Nice looking but doesn't work when we need it to!

published

Purchased this in May 2013 and had the heater installed by a plumber recommended by the store owner [name removed] we bought our heater from. Great looking and powerful heater when it actually work.
We had problem getting it to start within the first few months, but didn't think much about it and keep on trying till it's on. However this has become a real issue and is occurring way more often. It is a total shame to have such heater but could not ignite on a cold freezing night when you need it most, to a point we just gave up!
Seems like this is a common and costly issue from all the reviews, wish I had seen this before deciding on the heater. Very disappointed! The most basic component of a heater - the ignition just don't work!

Dangerous

We had a Cannon Fitzroy was installed eight years ago, last year I had it tested, it was emitting highly dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, I emailed and rang Sampford to tell them this, I assumed they would want to know and but had no response, according to the plumber who came to check heater, Sampford are aware but take no responsibility, it worries me because this is a really dangerous heater

As of today, Sampford have not responded to my email or phone calls to get the issue dealt with, despite posting here a month ago that they would contact me to deal with it. Canon have a lost a customer for life, their customer service is appalling.

broke down 4 times in the first year and manufacturer was blaming my cat, refusing to replace it. I only got replacement after Consumer Affaires contacted them and let them know they are supporting me with legal action. It took several week each time before they agreed to repaire it, so very cold last winter.

Works brilliantly, looks good and heavily heats

My cousins have the Powerflue and I used to enjoy sitting in front of it while it was running. When it is on, it looks fantastic and effectively warms me up. I do not have a single performance issue with the Powerflue. There is only one thing I do not like about the Powerflue. The price.
Extreme quality & brilliant looking.
Costs over $2,000

14 months on - we've given up.

published

Well it is 14 months on and finally they changed over the complete unit and installed a brand new updated version of the cannon fitzroy. Still didn't work. 3 visits later more new components and it still doesn't start at all. We've given up and are going to try with another brand.

You can operate the heater manually by pressing the ON/OFF button once. (Located on the side of the unit)
Or if you have the remote thermostat, select manual mode by pressing the A/M button until Manual appears on the display, then press the up arrow to the desired temperature.

That's what I'd like to know. Service guy has been out 3 times now for this problem and it is still not fixed.

Cannon

Hi Heater, when the heater beeps 4 times, the heater turns to safe shutdown mode. It will beep 4 times every 30 seconds to alert you to the fact. Press the ON/OFF button once to restart the heater during this time. Wait at least 20 seconds before attempting to turn the heater on.

If you still experience problems with your Cannon Fitzroy, we recommend you contact our Customer Care team on 1300 727 421 or email your details to service @ixl.com.au with "Product Review Comments" in the subject line. Our team are keen to assist you resolve the issue.

With mine the controls are 4 small buttons on the right side of the unit, top corner, electric start so unit must be plugged in, turned on and have gas valves in on position if you have safety valves in the line .

The top button is the start button and after oressing you will hear the automatic starter ticking rapidly, it should light within 2-4 seconds if gas is connected and flowing .
