Do not buy Chromagen!
Two burst solar panels almost 1 year apart, first was no frost valve installed (Why I do not know) We live in a suburb known for frosts. Second was a faulty panel, also my hot water service rusted out within 4 years. Sure all under warranty but you get charged for call out fees for plumber. Last year it took 2 weeks for Chromagen to get a plumber out, which means my family had no water For 2 weeks. Never again!

Less than 3 years old and this israeli made tank is KAPUT!!
The system is Israeli made and apparently heavily pushed and discounted to the industry some years ago ...but it's clearly crap when the tank is buggered less than three years in. Warranty will cover BUT the supply of the replacement will take a month!!!
I believe you're way better off to Buy Australian and get a 10 yr warranty on the tank.

The Worst hot solar water system in the world!!
Our rubbish Chromagen system is only two years old installed by Henley. First time the frost valve and now the joiner washers gone resulting in water leak wasting $570 on repairs. Never ever agree to have this piece of garbage installed! I haven’t saved more in bills than I wasted on this!

The worst hot solar system!
My Chromagen hot water system broken down two times and it is only 2 years old installed by Henley. A few months back the frost valve was gone costing me $350 and now joiner washers costing me $220. Henley, Chromagen and all other such mobs run away from owning the responsibility. I feel like ripping it off and throwing it on the nature strip!

Chromagen's change of warranty period
I have a Chromagen 302VOBP10 system (panels on roof, and tank on the ground), and have a leaking tank (which has been leaking for 12 months, but got much worse lately, prompting me to investigate with Chromagen). My unit is 5 years 11 months old. I understood these came with a 7 year warranty in 2012, which has since been changed to a 5 year warranty. Can someone tell me when Chromogen's warranty period on these units changed ? My service guy who attended was certain that the 2012 units came with a 7 year warranty, and advised me that someo...

A few days later, someone from Chromogen called me to say their managers have reviewed my details and unless i can produce a warranty document, that they will not replace it under warranty. My husband did all the filing back at that time, and has since passed away, so at this point i have only the receipt and installation details (no warranty sheet). I feel like Chromogen is playing the odds a bit here on who can produce what. Can anyone tell me when the warranty on these units changed from 7 years to 5 years please !!- Date Purchased
Terrible service and products
Rang at 4.15pm and was never answered, just left on hold for hours, Rang on another phone after 5 pm and they had obviously gone home. Be very careful when dealing and purchasing any product. Products are overpriced and of a poor quality. They clearly should not be in business.

Stuck with it
We have had a chromagen 300L solar hot water system for almost 7 years and have had many of the problems described by others. We're not willing to pay to replace it, so we have had to learn to live with it. And we seem to be succeeding as it now works well (I would NEVER recommend that anyone buy one though).
Initially the valve on the roof leaked and we got the usual response from Chromagen saying it was normal for it to pour out hundreds of litres of water every day. We got the specs indicating at what temperature the frost valve is sup...

Do yourself a favour
In the words of a famous Australian " do yourself a favour". DON'T buy this product. It failed after only 2 1/2 years and getting a response from the service department was impossible. After waiting 2days for a reply and no hot water with a young family, I paid for an electrician to come and rectify a manufacturing fault. He was flat out but understood the urgency and responded accordingly. Perhaps this company could take a leaf out of his book.

Unsafe product
The unit on my roof was replaced with a new one after only 7 years. Now two years on the heating element had to be replaced due to it failing. The reason why it failed is quite disturbing, it was leaking from the inside and shorting out over the 240 Volt terminals, so luckily the circuit breaker was able to trip. So on speaking to the technician he told me that this is a common problem and changes a lot of them. This to me is totally unacceptable as if the circuit breaker did not trip this could very well result in a fatal or serous injury outc...
Read moreome. No wonder they only have a 1 year warranty on this known fault, why has there not been a mandatory recall if lives could be lost with a poorly designed or manufactured product? Now not more than one week has passed and it looks like the therostat has failed and it dumps the complete 300 litres of water out of the tank causing hot water to pool at the rear of my house, not only do I lose all of my hot water but yet again another dangerous situation where I have scalding hot water right next to a walkway area where my children are playing.. Something needs to be done about this, the amount of unhappy reviews shows something is wrong.- Date Purchased
Not fit for purpose
We have a Chromagen 300 litre split solar hot water system with a ground mounted tank and roof mounted solar collectors. This was supplied as part of a house built by Metricon and is 2 years old. A few weeks ago it stopped working because the thermostat or its connectors burnt out. This left us without hot water for 4 days in winter with below zero morning temperatures. The same thing happened last winter and because of incompetent handling of the complaint we were without hot water for 8 days. The plumber who came to fix it said that the probl...
Read moreem lies if the location of the thermostat and that this causes condensation to form that causes them to burn out. When I told him that it had happened last year he said "see you in 12 months." Yesterday I had a look at the thermostat to see if it could be turned up because the water is not very hot and I found that the wires and connections showed signs of over heating with melted insulation on the connectors. I again spoke to the company who repaired it and one of their plumbers said that that is normal. He said that they just continually burn out. When I spoke to a plumber who used to work for the company who repaired it he said that these hot water systems are rubbish. This repair cost us approximately $400 as your warranty does not cover it. Today I read in a post on Choice Community that your warranty time restriction may not apply considering the expected life of the product. (see below) I am sure that a consumer should be entitled to expect that a hot water system should last more than 12 months and should not leave the consumer without hot water in the middle of every winter. It has broken down twice now and already shows signs of the same problem developing again a few weeks after being repaired and the defect cant be repaired so that it doesnt happen again. The insulators on the connections have already melted after a few weeks service so I am also concerned that there could be an electrocution hazard if the wires burn out and short out on the casing of the system.- Date Purchased

Below Average
Have had a 300 litre Chromagen for a little under 5 years when the Solar panel started to leak quite significantly.
Have had difficulty getting it fixed...the 1300 phone number provided does not work and I have been unable to contact anyone in the Welshpool office for support! It is disappointing since the old Solarhart lasted for 17 years before it expired!

Good warranty experience
Tank started leaking 1 mth before the 5 yr warranty expired. I sent photos to chromagen and they diagnosed rhe leak to be from the sacrificial socket. Agreed for them to come out and replace it as well as the anode which is due to be replaced after 5yrs. Service tech had one look and said tank needed to be replaced. Three days later tank was replaced under warranty. Had to pay callout fee and labour $284 which I was happy to as the callout fee( $154 ) would have had to be paid anyway to replace the anode ($107), so i was ahead anyway and with a new tank. Would expect a tank to last at least 10yrs but could not fault their service response in this instance.

Faulty hot water heater
My 300l system installed in 2012 is leaking water and all the fittings are rusted and badly corroded. I had Chromagen out late last year with the same problem. They are replacing my water tank under warranty, but have told me I must pay for the labour.
Why I am paying to have a faulty product replaced, a faulty product should be replaced free of charge.

Where is the service?
Actually, I just wrote the review on the 450 litre model but mine is a 300 litre roofmount Chromagen model. I purchased this in November 2011 and it is now leaking. I phoned the company on their 1300 number and after waiting about 20 minutes I received a robo voice suggesting I leave my number and they would call me back within a 2-hour time period. Unfortunately i never heard from them at all.
When I look at previous posts, water leakage seems to a major problem with this model and I wonder why the supplier/installer recommended the system

Hi Moodyjudy,
Let me assure you that all our tanks are supplied with a sacrificial anode. It appears the plumber has just overlooked how the anode is fitted and hasn't removed the flange plate to release the anode.

Crap product
Less than 3 years since installation. Now its leaking past the element / thermostat onto the flange so its tripped out the electricity but before it did that its rusted everything and now wont heat by elect. (naturally its now winter and overcast) the bolts are now so rusty they are beyond use (probably shear off when we try to repair it) so the whole tank will very likely need to be replaced. We are on 100% rainwater so a HWS should last 2 -3 times longer than most. and most should last 10 + yrs double that with Rain water Along with all th...
Read moree other issues mentioned such as it blows off lots Hot water in summer so theres the water wastage but it then still uses elect to heat later the same day !!?? Being solar it should be more cost effective, its NOT our elect bills were huge compared to our old house with standard elect HWS ! So we turned it off at Meter box our quarterly bill dropped over $300 for a quarter! AND YES we checked and monitored all our other appliances and usage to ensure it was the HWS (100% certain it was) avoid like the plague...- Date Purchased

I didn't come down in the last shower, after some argy bargy, I identified that it was weeping past the element etc... (who's the contractor and getting paid!??) Turns out because of heating and cooling (contraction and expansion) the seals of the Thermostat and Element had started weeping (who would have thought a HWS would heat and cool? Derr what a stupid design fault) Nipping up the bolts stoped the leak, the bolts holding the flange in are very badly rusted. Contractor said the bolts would undo easily when needed (replace flange . anode etc) Having worked on farms and machinery most of my life ... Hes full of $#*^... They will be very difficult to remove, I've used a heap of RP7 on them to hopefully help preserve them in the long term. but when it comes time to remove the flange, I'm sure Chromagen will go... oh its too long ago not our problem you have to replace the tank etc at your own cost, at least we have Hot water now...- 4 reviews

Worst thing I've bought..
Had the system for three and a bit years. Nothing but trouble. In the first year lost count of the number of call outs as the thermostat kept tripping (would guess about 8). Eventually that was fixed, only to start tripping every time it rained. That was kinda fixed by myself with waterproof tape, and now it's just started randomly tripping again every other week. Basically the booster is broken more often than not because the thermostat is dodgie.
It's a three thousand dollar system rendered useless by a dodgie thermostat which has no reset...
Read more button. To reset it is a costly call out to chromagen so they can unscrew the cap, wack the thermostat to reset it and problem solved for a few short weeks or days. As for power saving, again it's useless. The system automatically heats from the element as soon as water is used. So... take a shower in the morning and you'll pay for power to heat the water up just before the sun rises to do it for free. Again, just short cuts on the system which could have avoided this waste. A simple timer or a bit of intelligence would have fixed it.- Date Purchased

Terrible
Bought our system 3 years ago found out the hard way that their system is no good. Came home one day found water rushing down our roof and down the street. Called our plumber they said that Chromagen had problems that they are reciting. They are replacing the cylinder but not paying for all the labor. Why should we have to pay for their mistake.

Solar Banger
My plumbing supplier recommended a Chromagen 300L Solar System which has been a disaster. 1st summer it banged when hot tap turned on- they replaced valve, then removed part of valve,2nd summer covered 1 panel with shadecloth to stop banging when sun overhead between 12-4 & again replaced valve. HWS still banging loudly & disturbs neighbours, sleeping children & makes nearby dogs bark. If I wanted a noise like this each time a hot tap is turned on then it would have been quieter to put an outboard motor on the roof. Builder now advises that plumbing supplier Chromagen will not stand by any warranty & that they are having similar problems with other same brand units installed in nearby Southwest WA - Where does this leave the consumer ?

Will cost you more money
Most hot water systems are supposed to last at least 10 years, yet after 6 (one year out of the 5 year warranty) our entire system needs to be replaced. The water tank has corroded and the solar panels are cracked and leaking water in a nice mouldy stream down the roof. The package was included with our new home, but I would highly recommend anyone building specify a different system if you don't want to be out a couple of grand in a few years.

Utter rubbish
this cheap piece of junk is pushed to us thru builders bcos its the cheapest in the market.
No one in their right mind would buy a chromagen for themselves. So new home buys pls beware this system has a faulty drain valve that expels lots of clean water that you could have utilized in the house.

Don't Buy
Our roof top solar hot water system is only three years old.
When an electrician came to the house shortly after we moved in to do some unrelated work he said we would have trouble.
We had one panel replaced under warranty as it was leaking in November 2016. (Just inside the warrant period - three years). The plumber said the other panel will start leaking shortly and then the storage tank. Sure enough four weeks later other panel has started leaking. (Outside of warranty - would have to pay labour and travel). Goodbye to Chromogen having another brand installed next week. What a load of rubbish. Very disappointed.
