My life with Dixons, Canberra
After nearly a quarter of a century with Dixon Advisory, Canberra, I am well placed to assess their performance in helping me out of my working life and into a retirement - serviced by excellent financial advice in a client relationship enjoyed for its warmth and cordiality. I saw 5 or 6 advisers before retirement, but only following a meeting over 20 years ago with Alan Dixon did all pieces of the future financial puzzle come together. His advice was wholly professional and well judged, and to be analogous, it has been the captain of my ship of life ever since. Insufficient words remain for the superb quality of his Canberra staff.

Dixons know their stuff and never sit still
We have been Dixon clients since 2007, so during the toughest of times for people seeking o to prepare for a self-funded retirement and then to move, mostly, into that retirement phase. When we joined Dixons our shared comments were about regret that we had not taken control like this earlier; also relief that we had done so. This became increasingly important in the turbulent times world-wide on many fronts, which have impacted on one’s life investments and have made for significantly increased investment volatility over an extended timeframe ...Read more
(history shows cycles up and down; this one has had a much more extended curve). Nine years on, we are very comfortable with our decisions to come into the Dixon family. It’s important to us that investment recommendations are based on solid, readily explainable research and industry knowledge plus Dixons own expertise and as importantly their understanding of us and our situation, needs and preferences. We value the way Dixons responded post the GFC, finding or establishing investment tools and strategies that did not exist before. We are the beneficiaries of the national and international relations that key members of the Dixon team have, often developed over many years. The company’s dynamism teemed with caution (ie, not high risk taking) suits us as investors. We find our advisers available, responsive and we quite like being treated as if we are their number one client! We are impressed by the way staff seem to remain with the company – to us, that says something for the work environment; certainly they get promoted and our advisers have changed various times over the years but change has been seamless.Similar opinion? Very satisfied clients
Since retiring six years ago my wife and I have been very satisfied with the service and professionalism that we experience with Dixons. Dixons regularly review our financial situation and we have been very satisfied with both the financial and investment advice we receive from our advisors. Excellent examples of their advice are in the nature and performance of the US property and equities trusts.
The administration of our SMSF has always been handled efficiently. We have learned to trust Dixon's advice completely and are able to spend a minimum amount of time worrying about our financial future. We have no hesitation in recommending Dixons services.

Very happy clients
As a client of Dixons since 1990 It has been really interesting to see the development of the firm. In my view its standing in the very first rank of advisory and SMSF service providers is well justified. Happily despite its strong growth, it stil reflects the values and style of Daryl Dixon and also his wife Kate - integrity above all, commonsense, attention to detail and objectivity. Advising on and managing clients' savings is a very heavy responsibility and the staff we deal with - Justin for advice and Joy for administration - are really e...Read more
xcellent. Each would have a large number of clients yet whenever we speak to them first they always have as much time as is needed, secondly they always focus carefully and thoroughly on whatever issues you put to them, you never have any reason to think that you are getting generalised or standard responses. In addition, each of them is, and colleagues who work with them are, impressively prompt in getting back with detailed information or responses or advice when they need to. In short, we are happy clients It seems to me that the challenges in these areas have got greater in recent years and the establishment of an Investment Comitttee has proven to be an extremely wise and well timed move. This has helped reduce risks, broaden horizons and balance clients' portfolios to hopefully increase their resilience in challenging times. Two other points - our experience has bee that the firm has attracted some impressive recruits, and secondly it seems to have very good IT and admin supportSimilar opinion? Best Financial Decision Made
At the time my husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness about 12 years ago, we were 18 months from retirement. At that time, being ComSuper contributors, we had already decided to visit Dixon Advisory about rolling our payouts into our own Self Managed Superannuation Fund upon retirement. We did just that thankfully, and it has been the best financial decision we made. As then, and particularly now as a widow, Dixons see me regularly and keep me abreast of all developments and their impact on my SMSF; advise regularly on investment o...Read more
pportunities; the balance of investments within my fund; and always available for any questions I have. They have also looked after my Will, as it is a whole different 'ball of wax', when a husband or wife dies, and there are legal and financial complications that can be minimised and/or averted with the correct advice and action. I truly appreciate that my concerns are addressed immediately and calls returned promptly - no waiting for my email or call to reach the top of a very long list. Laura, Justin, Simon and Dyon have been truly brilliant over the years, as have all Dixon staff. They listen to MY needs, rather than telling me what I should or should not be doing, and react and provide advice accordingly. I appreciate the fact that I am not treated like an idiot when I don't understand a financial issue - rather, the issue is explained patiently and in simple terms in order for me to make a considered decision. I am truly blessed to have the team I do looking after my financial interests - and even better, can see regularly that the original investment pool is growing very nicely. Thank you so very much Dixon Advisory.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Fourteen years of continuous unfaultering service
My wife and I started our own self managed super fund with another prominent company some 17 years ago. However we noticed that after setting up our portfolio there was little feed back and our fund just drifted along and after three years we had little gain. We approached Dixon having previously been impressed by a Daryl Dixon seminar some years before. We immediately noticed the difference, we were kept constantly 'in the loop' and, as Dixon has got bigger the service has improved as has their mode of operation and investment options avail...Read more
able. Our advisors Rahulan and Jacquelin are only an email/phone call away offering professional, sound, reliable and timely service and advice appropriate to our risk level. Some investment options we receive are not always recommended and reasons given, however it is Dixon policy to allow their client to maintain control of their super fund. While we have developed a close friendly relationship with Rahulan and Jacquelin we know that this will never adversely impact on their ethics or professionalism. We have been also impressed with Dixon's imaginative approach to investment creating investment company opportunities give investors access to US property portfolios, solar energy generation etc. Having now retired, we are benefiting from Dixon's continued involvement and good work.Similar opinion? Dixon Advisory provides an extremely professional service
For us Dixon Advisory is a one stop shop for SMSF, with ready access to a well versed set of professionals in superannuation. One could not fault the professional services we have received from Dyon - our financial advisor - and his team, through to all the daily administration of our SMSF by Jenessa and her team, and to our investment advisor Justin and his team. They have provided us with the total package on managing our SMSF.
Dixon Advisory, with their knowledge and their professionalism, has given us great confidence that our fund is working to the best it can to realise OUR goals

Opening a SMSF with Dixon is the best retirement move we made
As we neared retirement, we wanted to achieve a better income from our superannuation savings and have some more control over our investments. But we did not want to be tied down by routine regulatory duties and have to wade through a variety of (often conflicting) financial advice. Dixon Advisory proved to be the perfect choice for us. We are provided with continuing personal investment advice from helpful and friendly staff and we are offered as much general financial information as we choose at any time. Additional seminars and circulars kee...Read more

Informed and harmonious self-managed super fund relationships
5 years ago, I was happily managing my family's super fund with the help of a particular superannuation company specializing in self-managed super funds. Regrettably, they were so successful that they were bought out. However, in the eyes of their successors, I became a mere number. My previous contacts with informed decision-making executive staff disappeared overnight as did our harmonious and informed working relationship. So, I transferred to Dixon Advisory.
Since then, together we have re-established the informed and harmonious workin...Read more

Recommended without hesitation
Before I went to Dixon, I was totally confused by what I had heard about superannuation and retirement options. I have now been with them for ten years, during which time I have received all the information, care and attention I could have wished for. Having set up my SMSF, the day to day administration has been excellent and the continuing information and recommendations on my investments has been extremely useful. On a personal level, I have enjoyed the most respectful, professional and friendly service from everyone I have dealt with at Dixon. I would recommend them without hesitation.

Total Satisfaction with Dixon.
We have been with Dixon Advisory for nine years, since our retirement. We have received better support and advice than we ever expected from financial and investment advisers. We don't have the biggest nest-egg yet we are given full support in the running of our SMSF. Dixon Advisory takes all the stress and worry whilst we enjoy retirement. We will always recommend Dixon Advisory to anyone seeking advice on setting up a SMSF... they are wonderful!

Outstanding service
My wife and I transferred our SMSF to Dixon following the GFC as we were unimpressed with the advice and strategy of our previous provider. We chose Dixon as we were aware of the reputation that Daryl Dixon had for being a no nonsense, straight shooter with an unequalled knowledge of the regulations regarding superannuation and, from the time of our first meeting, we were impressed with the professionalism of the staff. While there have been some changes with those managing our account, all have been most helpful, and our current team of Rahula...Read more
n, Jenessa and Dyon have all provided friendly, efficient and professional service. Rahulan in particular has provided excellent investment advice in the more than five years that he has been responsible for our portfolio. Now we are retired, we are more dependent than ever on the expertise of Dixon Advisory as the dividends and interest from our SMSF portfolio is our only source of income. We highly recommend that anyone who is looking for assistance with a SMSF speak with Dixon Advisory to investigate how Dixon may be able to assist them.Similar opinion? Glad we have made the change.
We have been with Dixons for about 18 months now. We have found them to be very efficient, courteous and reliable. They are very helpful always keeping you advised and explaining things to you. Their communications skills are second to none. We also like their upfront fee schedules unlike our previous financial advisor. Hazel Tan, Jessica Surlan and Vania Suwahjo are an awesome team and we feel very lucky to have them working for us. We would, and in fact have, recommended them to family and friends. We are so glad we made the change

Dixons: A track record of growing my super safely
I have been with Dixons for over 15 years and retired and living on my SMSF pension for 12. I have had excellent advice and service from Dixons whose transparent fees for service I have found to be reasonable. In particular I appreciate the independent nature of the advice, that fact that it is tailored for my specific circumstances and is regularly reviewed and adjusted where necessary. My advisor Rahulan R has looked after my account for many years and has a thorough understanding of my personal circumstances. A key feature of Dixons that put...Read more
s them ahead of the game is the operation of their own high powered investment committee that regularly reviews the range of investment markets looking for opportunities. This independent strategic thinking resulted in them setting up a suite of their own yield funds before interest rates began to sink as well as their US Masters Property Fund which they set up when our dollar was at historic highs compared to the USD and property prices in New York were at the bottom following the 2008 crash. Finally Dixons established their US Masters Residential Property Fund Notes Investment Vehicle which pays a set Interest rate of 7.75% per annum. These have been phenomenally successful investments for my SMSF. I recently had my Fund audited and found that for the last financial year (the 12th year of drawing down a SMSF pension) the total return was 15.1% and the net return after fees, costs, etc. was 14.1%. In my opinion you can't get better than that. Robert FlynnSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Excellent support for the financially underdeveloped
I am very satisfied with the financial advice and the administration that has made my SMSF with Dixons effective and efficient, but I'd like to express particularly my appreciation for the quality of communication and briefings in my meetings with Rahulan. I have no investment background and little natural interest in matters financial. I have put managing finances in the same basket as managing dental health - necessary but onerous, but I have very much appreciated Rahulan's patience, clarity of communication and informative presentation of the relevant information in our review meetings, and his reliable follow-through on the decisions made.

Best Investment Advice
My wife and I are very pleased that we chose Dixon Advisory as our Investment Advisor in 2002 because of the ongoing comprehensive advice and guidance provided to us concerning investments, taxation issues and Centrelink
rules.. We are particularly pleased with their management and effective control of our SMSF, with the results produced being sufficient in each year to fund our accumulated pensions withdrawals, as well as boosting the balances of our capital accounts..We are impressed by the the professionalism and integrity of our advisor Rahulan and his team, as well as the other Dixon operatives we have been associated wiith, and have no hesitation in recommending Dixons to others.

If we can't sell our Fort Street funds, how can we close our account and leave Dixson? Do you charge us an exit fee?
2 answers
Emiko, If you have an SMSF with Dixons you need to check with them on the procedure to close the SMSF. There are requirements to be met with the ATO. Dixons charged me fees to close my SMSF - a flat fee of $2990 plus about 1% of the value of each investment (up to a maximum of $399).
I do not know how you sell the Fort St funds if there are no buyers - maybe you have to wait until Dixons sell all the assets held by the funds. Ask them what they plan to do with the Fort St funds.
R
Emiko, you can move your entire fund to another accounting firm, your smsf owns Fort Street, not Dixon's. If you want to fold the fund and cash out, you'll have to wait for Fort Street to sell. As Dixons charges fees up front, wait until they have finished your end of year tax return, you've already paid for your end of year financials - you won't get a refund from them if they don't do it but you'll have to pay someone else to prepare it for you. Messy.

Does anyone think that Dixon Advisory in 2020 has changed under the new investment committee and administration and would be worth giving a second chance to manage one's SMSF? Any comments gratefully received.

My experience with their investment advice was not good and I've since separated from Dixons. . They were OK with general administration of the SMSF .
I dont know if the investment committee has changed but be wary of them recommending their own financial products.

Like many others, we are increasingly disillusioned with Dixons' tendency to push investments in which they have a stake, and we have lost a lot of capital as a result, so my question is: are people going to a different SMSF manager, or to industry funds or retail funds, what's your solution?

Cant sell Fort Street (Walsh & Co. A subsidiary of Dixons) so stuck with an SMSF until all assets are sold. I dont trust advisors at all after this experience so opened a Commsec account and bought ETFs for now. Will go with an industry fund as soon as I can. Advised by Dixons that there is a long list of sellers and Fort Street has no buyers (also controlled by Dixons) but they will need to do something by June 2020. Till then, ETFs and a Commsec account is working better than my years at Dixons. At least I can trust myself.
I lost so much money with Dixon's I took my SMSF to another advisor. On his advice I have sold just about all the Dixon products and am in no fee paying ones now. I am completely disillusioned with Dixon's and regret having ever been a client.
Likewise, all Dixon products (except Fort Street that cant be sold) gone. Too unethical for me and funds are not performers. I lost a lot also on totally non performing funds recommended by Dixons that just happened to be their own products. Best advice is to get out or don't consider getting in.
