Vacuum Cleaners Buying Guide
Our buying guide will explain which type of vacuum cleaner would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.

Not as good as older Dyson’s
I didn’t even think of buying a different brand of vacuum after my DC05. That vacuum was unreal. Purchased the DC54 Animal Complete as it’s replacement and at first it was great. About 3 months later it had loss a lot of its suction. There are no blockages but the handle assy flexing allows gaps. Even when I’ve removed the tube and tried bypass the motor still seems to have lost its suction. The DC05 even after 9yrs was better than this one. Looking at buying a new motor for the DC05 and getting rid of the 54. Not happy after paying so much for the 54
Purchased at Harvey Norman for $1,000.00.

DON'T!!!!
Loved my first dyson... upgraded to the animal complete… hard to clean… hard floor tool doesn't pick up… I have persisted with this machine because I could not afford another $900 to replace it. Engine blows up… Dyson tells me its my fault… That machine has been cleaned and emptied every time I use it... I payed for product care... apparently its not covered… waste of money… I wont be buying another one… they also want $300 to repair it… not likely…

Wouldnt be without a Dyson
The brush on this vac sucks everything up. We never have to worry about our pup coming inside and shedding. All we have to do it go along the carpet with the DC54. With all the attachment its also great to vaccum out the 4x4 and camper when we return from big trips out in the bush. Still going strong 5 years later.

Sad motor
This is my 3rd Dyson, the motor in this one has also stopped. Same as the 2 i had before. Thought Dyson would run a bit longer, considering the price you pay for them. The fine dust particles are also hard to clean out. It's a good vacuum when its not broken.

Great Cleaner, Dirty Disposal, few issues
I really loved this purchase at first as the dust cleaning power was great and the extra tools I got were versatile for the car and different floors/areas.
However, the tubes choke up with small objects like popcorn. I find myself needing to sweep and do a visual check with pick up before I vacuum. Hair needs to be regularly removed from the cleaning bristle and I seem to have to give the machine a quarter home service as objects still get stuck in the tubes. This can involve taking things apart or using a drain cleaning pipe in areas I cann...Read more
ot reach. It makes me wonder if I'm trading off thorough cleaning or time-saving. Most frustrating is the brag about it being bagless. I now wish to go for bags. I just find emptying the cylinder a real chore - dust goes everywhere when it's emptied, parts are fragile, and dust is all over the cylinder that can be hard to reach and empty. While it is a great machine and it is not so much trouble servicing and pre-cleaning, I wonder if there is something more versatile or even allergy friendly for waste disposal.Similar opinion? Dyson - I feel ripped off
I had a Dyson for many years then switched to Electrolux and back to Dyson now again. Wow, what a let down. Doesn't suck as well like my old one. Emptying the barrel is the worst part. Dust goes all over the place emptying it into a plastic shopping bag. What a PAIN! $800 wasted. I don't think I will ever buy another Dyson product.

worst vacuum cleaner ever!- it completely defeats the purpose of vacuuming!
Most unhygienic, cumbersome, time-wasting vacuum ever! After one room the catcher is already double capacity. Worst bit is how unhygienic emptying is- you'll get covered in the gross stuff you just hoovered as the spatula is too small and the awkward shape of the catcher means the crud gets stuck.

Dissapointed also
I bought my dyson DC54 from the words of a male salesman telling me it was really good an improvement to my dyson rodix cyclone. It will do all the things I need with a carpet and animals in the house. Oh man the new one is terrible. You have to constantly empty it and now the spinny thing on the carpet nozzle spits dirt out everywhere. I have been trying to work out what is wrong with it and an hour later still no better off. I think I should have my money back and go back to my old one which even though it is 8 years old and had a hard life works better than this new one. What a waste of money. I really bought the new one expecting a machine that was at least equally as good as the old one.

Hi there,
Thank you for your product review and feedback. ... Read more
If the turbine head is blowing dust around, there is most likely a blockage within the turbine head itself. We recommend to remove the brushbar using a ten or twenty cent coin to twist the cap at the end of the cleanerhead that retains the brushbar counterclockwise. Once done, you will be able to remove both the cap and the brushbar. Please then check the cavity where the brushbar was in the cleanerhead and clear out any debris. You should be able to look through the neck of the head and see straight through. Please then reassemble and retry the turbine. You can find the troubleshooting showing how to check the long hose, wand handle, extension tube and floor tool of your machine for blockages via this link: http://bit.ly/internalhose Please let us know if we can be of further assistance by contacting us on 1800 239 766. Great machine
Love this machine, great to maneuver with the ball technology and the pivoting points on the neck. Great suction and picks up our shedding Labrador fur with ease! Good selection of tools which make vaccuming easy. May be a little flimsy but how durable does a vacuum need to be. Happy with our purchase :)

So disappointing
Unfortunately our old dyson (which I absolutely loved) died ... and I had no hesitation is thinking if I bought a replacement it would be as wonderful .... wrong.
To empty the waste is a nightmare - it catches in the lid - and the little scraper device to clean out any remains ... really does nothing. I've found that I end up wearing most of the rubbish on me and not in the bin.
And then to replace the cyclone container is ridiculous - if the seal doesn't go on perfectly (and it never does) - there is no suction.
This is vacuum is a huge disappointment..

Hi there,
Thanks for your product review.... Read more
We regret to hear of your dissatisfaction with this product as it is Dyson's most powerful model. To empty the bin, we recommend to take the bin off the machine and open it over a garbage bin. The bulk of the dust and debris will fall from the bin. If you find debris caught in the trap door, you can use the combination tool to hold the trap door open and give it a gentle tap out. If you are having trouble removing debris from the shroud, you can remove the clear bin to make this easier. To do this, open the bin like you were going to empty it normally, then press the silver button between the two red rods and you’ll be able to remove the clear bin from the cyclone. Once the clear bin is removed it will make it easier to clean the bin flap as well. You can then also use the combination tool (with brush extended) to brush any debris off the shroud. We recommend the debris doesn’t fill over the red max line. If it does, it will make the machine significantly harder to empty. Whilst the machine doesn't have a capacity as large as previous Dyson machines, your DC54 has no filters to wash or replace. If you find there is a loss of suction in the machine this would be due to a blockage. You can find the troubleshooting showing how to check the long hose, wand handle, extension tube and floor tool of your machine for blockages via this link: http://bit.ly/internalhose If we can be of any further assistance please don't hesitate to email us back or call us on 1800 239 766. Dyson remains a great product
The performance of the new Dyson DC54 is just as good as my last Dyson. I read the reviews before purchase and was a little nervous spending $989 but with my purchase I received the handheld Dyson for $1. So with that in mind I tested the Dyson DC54 in store. The shop assistant threw a pile of dirt on the floor and let me have a go at sucking it up with the Dyson DC54. I thought the suction was good and the move ability of the machine felt lightweight but sturdy. At first I didn't like how light the machine felt my 10 year old dyson was a heav...Read more
y strong feeling machine. It coped a beating over the years so when I tested this machine I felt a little deflated over the lightness of it. With this in mind I still purchased it and couldn't be happier. The machine works great. No loss of suction. Good strong powerful suction 100% of the time. I am renovating so the house is constantly covered in dust and timber shavings, plasterboard and everything else you can think of. The performance is there. I am now happy with it's light weight because my house is a lot bigger than my last so while i loved my heavy old dyson this lightweight new one is a breeze to carry around my very large house. The reason it is so light isn't because they have used cheap nasty material like i originally thought. Dyson has stepped up in technology and are using lightweight but strong material. Overall i am happy with my purchase and continue to stand behind tge dyson brand. Ive tried cheaper models which my mother burns through like no tomorrow and i know ive saved my money buying a quality product that I know will stand the test of time. My only issue would be you can suck up water.. this is how my last one died. My husband sucked up about 500ml of water and killed my 10 year old dyson.. i was less than impressed. I have since educated him on the use of a dyson.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Crap
Don't normally write reviews but this has got to be the worst buy I've ever made. Every time I use it my stress levels hit the roof. Cleaning a floor should not cause to much anger. First Dyson I've ever brought and will not buy again nor recommend. Suction is rubbish, need to empty at least once when vacuuming a four bed house and its ridiculously difficult to empty. Have no idea what they were thinking when they designed this, So disappointed . But that will teach me to buy something based on the Name.

Simply the best
Fulfills all I expected, bought Electrolux 8 years ago believing after research it the best I was wrong, bought the dyson and 100 percent satisfied all my needs, very maneuverable excellent suction, the brush for furniture clean is remarkable for lifting pet hairs on my jumbo cord lounge suite, perfect for all around the house . Vac attachment for bed great, clean all floor surfaces straight from carpet too wood too tiles and doesn't loose power. My home is a moderate size 18-20 squares with many small rooms and it just gets under sofas and b...Read more
eds without effort, long cord means not to have to replug to many times or get long extension cord. My only whinge would be a little heavy but I'm just picking something bad too say it ifs the easiest vac to use than I've ever bought.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Love it
I purchased this product has I have a cat with long hair, I love it I used to have a upright dyson and I hated it very heavy and clunky especially when using the hard floor attachment or trying to get to the hard to reach areas. I find the barrel more user friendly and better to store away

Good suction. Bad capacity and difficult emptying
This is our first dyson. Overall we are happy. The vacuum picks up lots of dust and gives a good clean. This is good for our atopic toddler. However, the barrel fills up very quickly (full after vacuuming our fairly small 3 bedroom house). Plus, you need to empty outside as a cloud of dust comes out when you empty it. If I had asthma I am sure this would be an issue. Strange dyson have not designed something easier to empty without this problem of a cloud of dust on opening.

I bought Dyson DC54 six months ago and recently it generates stinky dust smell when operating it, how can I clean it and get rid of the smell. to be honest, I don't like this product especially when emptying the dirt, it is a messy job, dust flying everywhere and those dust that stay on the surface on the bottom of the cyclone output will accumulate germs / bacterial from time to time, not sure about other parts that are not visible, logically, if there's a stinky smell, there must be accumulation of bacterial. Any ideas?

I'm sorry but, as one of the original contributors to this thread, my advice to you would be to go out and buy a different vacuum cleaner. After doing battle with my Dyson DC54 half a dozen times, I gave up and went out & chose an Electrolux which is a joy to use - however I would have to say almost any non-Dyson machine will be an improvement over what you're stuck with. It may seem wasteful to fork out for two machines, but it is much more wasteful to have an expensive lemon standing unused in a cupboard because it makes the job SO DAMNED TEDIOUS. Lozza.

Hi there,
Thank you for your question.
Should any form of liquid or damp enter the machine, this may cause it to harbour a smell. We recommend carrying out the following steps which may dispel any odour.
After emptying you may rinse the clear bin in cold water as per the instructions in your user guide, ensuring that no detergents are used. Please don't remove the bin inner or cone seals whilst washing the clear bin and most importantly ensure that the clear bin is completely dry before placing back onto the machine. Please note that the cyclone top assembly, which attaches on top of the bin, must be removed and is not washable.
We also recommend to let the cyclone, hose, floor tool and wand of your machine air out for 24-48 hours, ideally somewhere safe, dry and sunny.
Best wishes,
Samuel

Most people vacuum because they want to rid the home of dust. How could anyone design something that when u empty The barrel u are covered In dust germs bacteria subject to asthma attacks. How rude of them to take us for suckers
Sam Lasked
We bought a DC54 a few months ago. Within a month of using it, regularly, the scraper to clean the barrel (which is a pain in the butt) snapped. I am now using scrap pieces of card from the recycle bin, torn up and fashioned to fit inside the barrel to scrape out the hair and dust. The machine works fine BUT- am I asking too much for a sturdy scraper to help clean the barrel out??

I Just use one of those Baby Bottle brushes and on the outside just my dustpan brush. All the hype about Dyson's not worth it, especially if you have messy people like mine.
I would give it away or swap for a hoover any day. Good Luck Sam, Teebone

I'm very glad to hear that Dyson are able to organise a replacement scraper for Sam. But I think what most of us want is a replacement vacuum cleaner. The DC54 is just a lemon.

Can you please tell me why all answers only relate to broken part's, and not to the actual problems with the actual machine???
Wand far too short...crappy materials used, quality absolute crap!!!.. where has Dysons integrity gone???.. It's all about money making, not about addressing the problems...
Answer that????

Find me a product that does not have crappy materials that you have to spend a fortune on. Sadly this is the way of the world now. Cost cutting is the norm. Still I think Dyson is still the best product in the marketplace. Have you tried extending the wand or are you a super tall person?
