Cleaning filters and which way when replacing

I bought this vacuum April 2015. It has been great until last weekend when the engine started making an awful sound and letting off an awful smell. I'm thinking the engine will need replacing. I'm not happy about throwing away a vacuum cleaner only 4 years old. What do you recommend?

Maybe get it maintained by a professional who fixes vacuum motors? Has the warranty expired?
Change your filters, I clean my filter at the back with a little soapy water and let it dry completely before you use it again. Also you can get replacement filters at Good Guys or Godfreys. Servicing your Vacuum at least once a year would be recommended they do get used a lot, it's like a car, if you service your car, you service your vacuum cleaner as well.
The awful smell would indicate a burn of the motor. I'd find out from Electrolux if they have recommended repairers in your area and get in touch to see how much it would cost to replace the motor. Otherwise you may be better off with a new replacement.

You might have something wedged in it somewhere, take the attachments off, hold it up to the light and look inside the shaft, if there is something there, grab a broom stick and try and get whatever is stuck in there out.

I bought an Electrolux Allergy Pro around the middle of this year and have used it without problems. All filters cleaned. I had just used it a couple days ago, but now it won't even start. Have checked everything, but still won't work. Any suggestions?

I suspect it is the on handle switch or possibly an internal component. Sadly nothing you can fix easily.
That said, Electrolux delivered us warranty replacement number 4 (!!) on Friday.
This POS didn't work out of the box!! (the powerhead shuts off when you draw it across the carpet towards you).
We are done with this model.
It's rubbish.
We will be calling them Monday and asking for a full refund.
I am afraid nothing could be done.
It could be an internal thing. Try giving them a call
I ended getting a refund as nothing could be fixed, agree with PeterJ Its a rubbish model
just wish I had not had to deal with the snoty cow from Godfreys to get it
