You expect a fridge to last longer than five years.
We purchased this fridge about five years ago. A few weeks back we noticed several fine horizontal cracks has appeared in the plastic at the rear of the fridge. The plastic seems to be deteriorating.
I photographed the damage and sent it to Fisher and Paykel. Their initial response was 'suspected chemical damage' and the offer to send a service person out to have a look at it, for which I would be required to pay $135.00. I asked the person on the end of the phone if I was wasting my money. Was there any possibility they would replace the f...Read more
ridge? I was told that while they certainly couldn't give any guarantees without someone seeing it (fair enough) that option was a possibility. I was fairly confident. I only ever use microfibre cloths to clean my fridge. If the damage was caused by chemicals they must have come into contact with the fridge before I owned it. I agreed to pay for the service call. I very nice technician arrived, complimented me on the excellent condition of the fridge, advised that it was clearly some kind of manufacturing problem and nothing I had done would have caused this damage. He also noted that the damage was concentrated on both sides of the plastic at the centre of the fridge and not evenly distributed (as you would expect with chemical damage). He had a poor phone line to Fisher and Paykel but told me they had authorised something, and I should expect to either get a new fridge (hooray) or a new fridge with a requirement to pay a pro rata amount based on the life of my fridge. He said, 'typically something like $50 per year". To his credit, he also refused to ask me to pay for the service call, saying "I'm not charging a customer $135 to LOOK at a fridge!" I wasn't thrilled with the idea of paying $300 to $350 to replace a fridge that was faulty, but I figured this was better than nothing, and I was out of warranty.

I strongly recommend that you DO NOT buy this fridge. Mine developed cracks in the back of the fridge cabinet after only 5 years use. F&P tried to blame me, saying I must have used a cleaner that damaged it. When I told them I only ever use microfibre cloths and water to clean my fridge they sent a technician. He complimented me on the condition of the fridge and agreed the cracks were a manufacturing problem. He also said they would effect the efficiency of the fridge and that if they spread to the freezer section the fridge would break down. Fisher and Paykel replaced the fridge but charged me $800!!! When I wrote to complain they told me that they felt this was fair given the age of the fridge. I have it in writing that they only expect their fridges to last a decade. I notice the new fridge came with a warning sticker saying only to use detergent and water. What! You can't use spray cleaner on a fridge? What's it made from? Also no bottle rack which I think caused the cracks.

perience with the fridge and told him about the cracks. "Oh that's definitely a manufacturing fault," he replied. "It's caused by too much insulation foam being injected into the back of it. They should have replaced that."
