I'm surprised by my Honda EU20i, it hasn't done much work in the 8 years I've had it, I haven't used it for 18 months, put in new fuel, started ok, plugged in the small fridge that it runs when we have a power failure, but this time it won't start the fridge ?

Underperforming Continuous Operating Hours
I've tested my 20i Honda generator several times on full load/output with the eco-throttle switched off and a full tank of fuel.
I can't get any more than 2.5 continuous operating hours, and that's on a good run.
This is significantly below my expectations, what was discussed with me in-store before the purchase and also below Honda's published specifications of at least 3.4 hours.
The generator is practically new - only 3 months old.
I recognise that I'm testing it hard but I bought it for Cyclone Season (I'm based in Cairns) and having ...Read more
it under-perform in this way does not instill me with a lot of confidence if I have to use it in an emergency. I've emailed both Honda customer service and the store where I bought it several days ago but as yet no response.

Be careful don't buy second hand Honda generator
Just purchased a Honda EU20I second hand, looks good runs good but no power out put. Contacted Honda dealership who told me it would cost over a thousand dollars to fix . More than it is worth . So if the generator stops producing power may as well throw it away. I don't have a warranty so not sure what to do with it. Boat anchor maybe.

Best. Purchase. Ever.
I run my Eu20i five hours a day, six days a week. Starts first time, every time, and has done so for four years now. Never misses a beat. Only had one repair - starter cord - cost $30. I get around 14 hours use from a single tank on ECO setting, which is nice and quiet. If you need a reliable generator thats fuel efficient, quiet and sturdy - you cannot go past this one.

Poor Services, Honda's Isn't What Cracked Up To Be
You buy Honda mostly for the name and quality. Though Honda generators are made in Thailand and the Australian services are poor. Honda's cash back system on their products is the biggest headache of all. Wait over 6 weeks to get your rebate and be forced to jump through so many hoops to activate the EFTPOS cards just to get your rebate. At the end of the day for the amount of cash you pay for the name "Honda" it isn't worth your while. Shop around, there are plenty of other quality engines out there that just don't have the name, tho services, quality and price is superior.

Great And Reliable Generator But Beware
Posted a review 12 days ago, further to that Honda rep contacted me and offered follow up, transferred to three different departments and eventually quoted facts from two years previously. Offered to pull it apart but if no faults found I would be billed (only 18 months old at this time and using 30 ml of oil every tank of fuel by their tests) told me this was normal, smoke obvious and very smelly. Six months later, smoked so bad as to be an embarrassment, left it in the shed then. Having said that I am a traveller and meet and talk to many oth...Read more
er campers, nobody has any trouble with the eu2 generator, nothing but praise, they are a first class unit but if you are that one in a million who ends up with a faulty unit, don't expect any help from Honda, maybe the units are so good they don't need to even have a warranty dpt. I would still buy another eu2 and probably will I couldn't be that you lucky twice, could I?1 comment

Reasonably quiet
I love the Eco mode which saves fuel. Great little portable generator. Super reliable as long as you give it a service at least every couple of years. Needs regular oil changes but apart from that, a real ripper. We use ours daily and it is still going beautifully 5 years on.

My Honda has died too
Yep after only 12 months the genny has stopped producing electricity. I agonised over purchasing this premium product as I thought that I could get several for the same outlay off ebay. Disturbing to hear that it is a throw away item and can't be repaired. A lot of money for 12 months use.

My honda generator pretty much saves my back . It was as description. Even came oiled and gasoline. Didn't think that was possible. Dangerous goods and all. Came fast and free. Less money then going into town. And i do not think i could live without it now. Like i said. Easy starting. Light. And powerful. I love it

Near Perfect
Bought this Honda EU20i generator to run my onsite bush caravan, (before I went solar) basic things like lights, and TV.
Well the Honda runs sweet as a nut, perfect, there are a few problems,
single outlet, no outlet cover, no hour meter for service intervals, only uses a flashing light system and price, the Honda seems a bit over priced for what you get, or do not get.
There are other cheaper 2000watt generators on the market that offer more eg: twin outlets with covers and a lot come with a protection cover, the Honda EU20i does not you need to buy one for $60.00
But you do get Honda, quiet, fuel efficiency, trouble free, warranty, weight and easy starting.
I like my Honda.

Our eu20i has powered our off the grid house for nine years. 365 days a year. 4-6 hours per day. Costs so far are fuel + monthly oil change + 1 pull start cord. Still starts on first pull. We have ordered a new eu20i and will keep the old one for convenience and parallel connection when required.

Reliable and Efficient Caravanning Accessory
Bought a Honda Generator EU20i to supply power when out caravanning. The generator is pretty quiet (as far as a generator can be quiet), light (around 20kgs) and easy to use. Have had no problems with it. More pricey than the cheaper alternatives but for that extra price - quieter, lighter and more fuel efficient. Happy with the purchase.

11 years good service from my EU20i.
Purchased my unit in 2002. Have used it regularly for about 100 hours per year. Apart from a minor problem with the on/off switch becoming contaminated by dust when I forgot to put it on a scrap of carpet for just that purpose, have had NO PROBLEMS. I service it every 25 hours in harsh conditions, otherwise every 50 hours. Keep your fuel clean and fresh.
Reliable, great value for money. Would I buy another? YOU BET

10 Years No Problems
Purchased this unit in 2003 to provide mains power to various appliances on my 40 ft yacht when at anchor. Chose Honda because the waveform was stable and suitable for power to electronic equipment and a microprocessor controlled battery charging system. Rust proofed the chassis. It was stowed on the upper deck in a purpose made canvas cover. Never missed a beat and ran a compact washing machine for over 70 hours. Moved it ashore and use it as an emergency power supply for two fridges and a freezer. This is an excellent unit and with regular maintenance shows no signs of failure.
Longevity. Ease of start, economical . 12v outlet.
Noisy in comparison to modern units by other manufacturers

Did not get value for money!
After purchasing what we thought was the best generator on the market for our caravan (and paying top dollar), our Honda Eu20i ran for 600 hrs before dying (2 years after purchase). It was still under warranty so we took it to the local Honda dealer in Armidale who said that the exhaust valve had worn from normal 'wear and tear' and it would not be covered under warranty. We paid money to have the problem fixed, only for the geny to stop running a week later (by this stage we had moved on and could not take it back!). We contacted Honda who ...Read more
said to again take it to our local dealer (this time in Kalgoorlie) and were met with comments of 'oh these things are just too hard to pull apart', essentially he didn't want anything to do with it! We've had no response from Honda as to why their Kalgoorlie dealer doesn't want to look at it and will never buy one of these geny's again. We could have bought 4-5 of the cheap version on eBay for the price we paid originally (and I'm 100% sure we wouldn't have needed that many in 2 years). NOT HAPPY AT ALL WITH THE LACK OF SERVICE FROM HONDA AD THEIR AGENTS!!! Ran well before it died! Too expensive to only run for 600hrs before dying (2 years)! Poor service from Honda dealers.4 comments

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this legendary little generator. This baby has never missed a beat, its reasonably quiet, easy on the juice and reliable. Goes with me to work and on camping trips, its scratched, dirty as its been knocked around a lot but she keeps on purring away. Would I buy another.. in a heartbeat! Honda v Yamaha Generators ...And "The Others".
First, a little background to help you decide if it's worth your while reading any further...
Before purchasing my "Australian" Honda EU20i, (the pretty much identical US version of which is known as an EU2000i, delivering 110 volts of pure 60Hz) I hired not only that model, but also its Yamaha EF2000is "sibling", added to which I've had occasions (over many years now) to spend large amounts of time alongside several others who were operating a huge variety of such generator sets.
These ranged from the sublime, (such as Subaru's Robin R17...Read more
00i or the Subaru-powered Hushmate) to the ridiculous, ...the latter being an assortment of cheap and nasty noise-makers. My requirements for power on location are both sporadic and demanding, in that I provide top quality showbusiness audio "in the field", using digital gear that simply will not survive poor quality AC power. Roughly half a dozen jobs per year are located where there's no mains, but then I absolutely must have both reliability and endurance from a generator that cannot radiate any of the staccato mid-range impact noise that characterises "bargain-priced" offerings.3 comments
