I am contemplating purchasing a new Jayco Penguin (on road). I have read a series of reviews where penguin owners have experienced significant failures with the lifting system. I have previously owned Jayco campers the lifting system and cables never failed and lasted. My question is two fold (a) is Jayco using lower quality materials in their new campers in the lift system (b) has Jayco rectified the problem? I can deal with a draw not closing, or a light not working etc but if I have to worry about the lifting system failing on the way to Uluru that’s a different matter!

I have just taken delivery of a Jayco Penguin Outback. There is a sign inside the door that states that the roof light plug is to be disconnected before lowering the roof. However, there is not a roof light plug fitted to the camper trailer. Should there be a roof light plug fitted?
1 answer
The plug should be near the sink close to the wall. The idea is to disconnect the roof electrics whilst you're travelling.

Can I tow a Penguin 13 with a Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.4 petrol...?? If yes, do I need to do anything to the car..??

You should be able to tow one. Depends on the towing capacity and ball weight the Grand Vitara can handle. And the weight of your Jayco Penquin.
I tow mine on a medium SUV MY Jayco weighs 1164kg ATM (loaded weight) and 129kg ball wright and it tows fine. My car can tow 1600kg and 200kg on the ball.
You will need a tow kit, and will need to get an electronic brake controller unit fitted to your car to operate the electric brakes on your Penquin.
Yup, it tows fine... we’ve done several weekends away now and are very happy with the Penguin and the towing of...

would you need swaybars/levellers to to a penguin ob
1 answer
Hi, well I have a JPod and tow with Honda CRV. It's got an 88kg ball weight which is not much but it does "bounce" over bumps. I'm putting on a set of bevelling bars this weekend, along with upgraded springs on the rear end of the Honda. In my view levelling bars can only improve the ride of your vehicle/van combo. Also helps if a friend gives them to you for free as in my case!

After lending the van to our family members who have been off road, we decided to take the Penguin (2001) on a recent trip to a van park. This time we found that both interior lights did not work, although power points and exterior light were ok. As one of the bulbs was almost black, we thought it must be the bulbs and replaced two! The ceiling lights still did not work.
Re a previous question ton turning on the interior lights. I examined the canvas sleeve which is sealed by a Velcro strip. There was no plug connected to the wiring which was unbroken through its length from the roof to under the sink. The wiring under the sink was connected by screw on contacts. However, there is a push on / push off switch on the exterior lip of the van roof which would seem to operate when the van is wound up, presumably to allow the lights to operate and automatically close the circuit when the van roof is wound down.
Are you able to help with our interior lighting problem please?
Thanks!

We have just bought a Jayco Penguin 2004 model, but we don't understand how and when to use the battery and electrical power switches that are under the table. when charging the battery from an electrical 240v cord point, should the switches be up or down, to charge the battery?
Also if running lights on battery power, should the switches be down then. We don't have a manual, to refer to and cant find one on the net.
