Best car I've ever owned
This is a big heavy car but once you understand the mass it carries, this is an amazingly versatile vehicle. You feel the weight on corners, it shifts and carries its momentum but you get used to it. The only thing I don't like about it is the extremely slow infotainment system, and the DVD movie player is next to useless. We use it for touring into remote parts of Australia, we regularly refer it to as the luxury motel on wheels. It's an easy vehicle to devour the kilometers on the freeway, yet handles the rough stuff in comfort - devours poth...Read more
oles and handles corrugations with aplomb. The 8 speed ZF has low enough ratio to pull the vehicle up fair steep inclines, so much so, I sometimes forget to put it into low gear - yet it easily cruises on the freeway and returns around 8.5l/100kms loaded with gear. Some recommendations, stick with the higher profile tires, otherwise the ride can get rough. The navigation is cumbersome, super slow and expensive to update, take that into account. We easily manage below 9l/100kms on tour fully loaded with a roof box. The cruise control on the Discovery is much better than the cruise control implementation on the RR Evoque, and so is the tuning of the gearbox. It easily handles changes in incline, not hesitating to change gears. And reliability, not an issue, not a single problem with it at all. Amazing car, I am always looking forward to driving it.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

BEST SOCCER MUM CAR ON THIS PLANET
This 4x4 could just about go anywhere on this planet.
We purchased the TDV6 back in January this year and everyone that gets in the car just raves about its comfort and features.
Although the only dirt, mud and off-roading its ever likely to see is the unsealed roads around a soccer oval, I'm sure its more than capable as a real 4x4.
I hear a lot of people knock soccer mums for driving big 4x4's but really, its an absolute necessity when you have a couple of kids over 10 that play heaps of sports and you need to lug all their gear around wit...Read more
h you from one place to another, plus we're always picking up the kids friends as well, so we need the room. Really, driving the discovery today is no different to my parents owning a big VW Kombi back in the 60's, 70's & 80's although, I think there should be some minimum height requirements for the larger 4x4's (i.e.: 5' 6") as I've seen other soccer mums around 5' that bang and scrape everything in their path as they cant see over or around the pillars or headrests due to their habitus. Anyway, I think the Discovery is fantastic and worth every penny - soccer mum or not.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Great vehicle
A very smooth reliable drive, has towed a 3.5 tonne gross van twice across Australia, up to Cape York, the Savannah Way, Cairns to Broome & handled the rough stuff brilliantly. Have fitted LR Tank, & spare to rear, & Recovery type Hitch. Am fitting 18" Compomotive rims for more rubber under the rim & tougher tyres, A brilliant tourer aim for around 15-16l/100 towing, & 9 around town where its tight turning circle makes parking a breeze. Its serviced every 10k vs recommended 27k, as it works hard. Only issue DPF blocked causing huge increase in fuel use, easily fixed.
Would recommend this vehicle over everything else I've owned

30,000ks disco towing dream
Over 30,000ks most of it towing our Coromal lifestyle 635xe, in the first year. Queensland to Victoria across the Murry to Mildura. Oodnadatta track, Jabiru, then the Kimberlies, el Questro on the Gib river road, west coast, Nullabor and home. 16.5 litres per 100ks average whilst towing, 9-11litres around town and not towing. The tow assist is fantastic, tdv6 diesel so powerful and the padels for gear changes great for down hills and off road. Most comfortable 4wd we have ever had. Meridian sound fantastic. Rear camera even focuses on the tow-ball when hitching the van. Great drive Disco Dream.

A Pleasure To Own The Discovery 4'
I wanted to try a Biggish Diesel 4WD Wagon. We owned quite a few new cars in the last 30 years, from a Gemini, Corolla, 2 Commodore V8's, a HSV Monaro,Subaru Impreza - very thirsty'+Nissan X-Trail & Murano Ti's. Never had a bad time with any really & I thought the Murano was special as it was luxurious & virtually maintenance free until we took the Land Rover SDV6 on in 2014 optioned with Sat Nav, Premium sound & Tech Pack. It's big and looks a bit daunting but the cabin is so well designed you feel at ease right away & once on the road it's re...Read more
markably easy & comfortable to drive. The paint and upholstery finish is superb. The rear seats will all lay flat, it's huge in the back you could sleep in it no problems. The engine & transmission are sweet' heaps of power. You wouldn't know there's a V6 diesel under the hood it runs extremely quiet & only at idle you can here the distinctive diesel rattle. I like to use the paddle shift when slowing on hills especially to save the brakes pads a little. However it does throw a lot of brake dust on to the alloy wheels which is annoying and the standard tyres are all but down to the wear mark indicators, we have only traveled 32000 klm's, it averages only 9.0-11L/100ks. We tow a 1500k boat & it just shines towing. The car really is great and the best vehicle we've owned, it's mainly used as a town car & my wife just loves it. Not cheap but the value is there. Drive & price up some upmarket Toyotas and you will see what I mean. Was keen on a Prado Kakadu but found it way to under powered and harsh at 70-100kph & $95000? Prado drivetrain is to outdated for the money. Have since updated to a new 2016 HSE. The Steering &Suspension have been Refined. So has the Engine Management ..Smoother and More Responsive .The New Car has Vastly improved Sat Nav & Cameras + Lane change Monitors in the mirrors.Took a while to get used to these but they work a treat. A trip to Surfers from Wollongong returned 7.9L/100. My boat Trailer Lights are not working when plugged to this car so there's an issue there as they work of my mates Ranger. And some Fallout spots were on the cars duco from new which wasn't good for an expensive Car. Found them the next day as I didn't expect to look for that on a new car at the dealership.. Got to be on your toes these days no matter what you buy. Trailer lights turned out to be a blown fuse .We just returned from a trip out to Junee-Mildura-Broken Hill-Cobar-Dubbo-Mudgee-Lithgow and home to Shellharbour .4 Adults & Luggage. Fuel Average was 9.4L P/100. 2,650klm's all up.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
5 Great Years
Great all round performance both on and off road comfortable and powerful but where is the front recovery point? It's off road 101!! Even my daughter's 1990 Bmw 318i has a recovery point to screw into the front bumper. With this small exception, I can honestly say that it's been the best car I've ever owned.

Awesome But Expensive (Do Not Buy One Without A Warranty.. An Extensive Warranty)
I bought the 6 cylinder petrol model with 68,000km's from a dealer and I still own the car and I have done 140,000km. I purchased an ALIANZ Advantage extended warranty which cost me $3000 extra which covered me for two years. During that 2 years the insurance company covered a total of $13,000 worth of repairs including a new gearbox which cost $7000. Be VERY careful, some warranties limit each warranty claim to $2000 or even $1000. My warranty allowed EACH claim to be up to $10,000 and the total sum of the claims over two years could be up to ...Read more
the value of the car which in my case was $30,000 This vehicle is by far the most comfortable & capable 4x4 I have driven, for off road, I would recommend buying a locking rear diff though as it can get bogged in deep mud with the center lock only. The car is an absolute joy to drive, I love driving it every day. I must say that I have absolutely thrashed this car so hard you would not believe it, I have treated it like a race car, driven 60km's an hour over rocks, bottomed out the suspension numerous times, and it just keeps going. Engine has started to rattle a bit at 140,000km's but just had it checked and mechanic says it's all good. LOL, Seriously, this car has been punished every day and just keeps going. The petrol engine is very reliable, never had an issue with ANY engine components. The things that I have had replaced are: - Front suspension bushes (twice)Similar opinion? Amazing car
Purchased a discovery 2015 sdv6 in February 2015. Have done around 10,000ks with absolutely no issues.
Amazing car to drive, oodles of torque, stacks of appeal on the road and great interior space. Great family car. Surprisingly economical to run given size.
Only complaint is aircon defaults to "fresh" every time you stop the engine, so need to hit recirc every time you start.
First land rover and I am a convert now!
Will upgrade to new disco hopefully in 2020.

More than I expected
Tried 18 different vehicles. Never thought of the Discovery until my wife suggested I try one. Immediately impressed and bought on order. Took 4 months to delivery but has surpassed all expectations. Did the 4WD program and now know what it and the German cars can do. The quality level is now superior and having had all the German cars previously will not bother with them for the time being. We will see what the service is like soon but better be at least as good as the Germans have been.

Great car, ticks all the boxes for a family and the dog
Nervous buying this car after a shaky experience with the old Freelander. Chalk and cheese really, the Diesel engine is amazingly capable (with Sdv6 giving much more oomph than the TD) and I still need to ease off the pedal to stop myself taking off like a Formula 1 freak. The driving position is superb with excellent field of view, you truly do sit on top of the world, but one forgets to lower to access height at the end of the journey and if you are short like me, it's Kilimanjaro all the way down! HSE memory seating is fab as my partner is t...Read more

Proximity sensor handy for not having to fudge about trying to find keys, but not too clever if we forget to 'undo' it & lock keys in surfer padlock on car...the boot stays unlocked! Disco 3 Excellent value
I bought my Disco 3 td6 as a demonstrator in 2008; I have just sold it with 125,000 klms on the clock. In that time, apart from normal servicing it cost me one set of tyres (Coopers) one windscreen wiper & two windscreens (not the cars fault). The Disco was used to tow a 2.8 tonne caravan all over Australia & any land Rover Service Manager will tell you the Disco's that work hard give hardly any problems. Most of their work comes from the ones used for shopping trolleys or school runs. Average fuel (diesel) consumption for this period was 13.5 l/100klms, used without the caravan it was 9.5 l/100klms.
Unfortunately I couldn't afford another Disco so I bought a Jeep - already having problems.

Heap of crap
I purchased my Disco as a brand new vehicle in 2005, it has now travelled only 108,000 kms.
It has been regularly serviced & never done any serious off road nor towed a caravan.
I have replaced the Suspension Pump at 67,000 kms, the Front Suspension Upper Arms at 97,000 kms, Front Door Locking system & now the Air Conditioning compressor is showing signs of failure.
Maybe I have been unfortunate to buy a lemon but be warned.

Smooth and Hassle Free
Purchased 2012 SE new. Never had an issue, taken it bush, never missed a beat. The 4WD system is superb. Very happy and currently looking to change over to a new 2015 model but this time with Read Diff option for a bit more peace of mind off road. Excellent family car, surprisingly nimble around town. I've sat in the back with a mate on a road trip with both of us nudging 100kg and over 180cm and it was surprising comfortable, not cramped and plenty of headroom. A genuine 7 seater.

Can not fault - Drives like new or better
Done 228,000kms since new on all types of terrain. Never failed. Only repairs have been routine maintenance requirements.
Tows a 2.5 tonne gross caravan and appears to run better after towing the van.
It is comfortable with excellent road vision. Fitted with a lone ranger reserve tank giving an approximate range of 1600 to 1800 kms.
I would purchase another one any day if I could afford it.
I am sure the key to a long and reliable vehicle life is the correct servicing which mine receives from authorised Landrover Dealers or Landrover Specialists.

Good value, reliable if serviced properly
I picked up a bargain one-owner 1999 TD5 manual in 2009, with 230000km on the clock but a complete service/recall history. I got a base-model one, because air suspension and ACE just seemed like more to go wrong (and those models were way more expensive back then). It drove like new on the test drive, and that is how it's turned out to be. Now over 300000 km of pretty hard use with no major problems other than normal wear-and-tear consistent with age (coolant hose replacement a year ago, a new bearing/seal kit in the turbo, new front prop sha...Read more
ft uni-bearings, new rear shockers). This vehicle gets a lot of off-road use, and that is where it shines - it really is terrific off-road, belying its excellent on-road manners. Live axles rule! Also a very comfortable and quiet cruiser on-road, serene with great economy (overall average ~8.5-9l/100km). The TD5 motor remains one of the sweetest diesel engines I've ever experienced - for me it's the highlight of these vehicles. And its safety is ahead of its time - check out its real-world crash rating online. The only unexpected problems were : (1) was a biggie - breaking a front drive-shaft in a difficult off-roading situation, while revving the engine hard in 1st gear low range attempting to ascend a difficult slope. This vehicle is fitted with an aftermarket Davis Motors centre-diff lock link that automatically engages the CDL when low range is selected. Although locking the centre diff does significantly improve the off-road ability, it appears that the Traction control system can get confused in some situations, and having the centre diff locked can result in stress peaks within the drivetrain if the TC wheel braking gets out of synch. (maybe that's why they removed the CDL actuator and then the lock itself until the D2A software upgrade?). Anyway, once aware of the problem, its an easy work-around, (use moderate revs in 1st LR and/or install a TC disable switch for the locked centre diff - this can also help sand driving) and I've had no further problems. (2) was really irritating: the rear door lock tab is prone to obstruction when the back of the car is filled with gear. On a steep climb the rear door got trapped in the locked position when a heavy rucksack shifted onto the lock-tab. The electronic lock-actuator couldn't unlock the door, and then burnt out, leaving all our gear trapped behind a cargo-barrier. Infuriating. When I replaced the rear door lock mechanism ($60 for a new one off ebay), I pop-riveted a metal guard over the top of the lock-tab to stop a repeat. Routine servicing is simple (I do it myself). Parts are cheap and easy off ebay. This car will only see a dealer if the check-engine warning light comes on this hasnt happened. If it does, they can plug it in and find out what's up. The abs 'Three Amigo' lights have come on a few times. One was a broken signal wire (overgrown tracks), the others have been transient. I bought an ABS Amigo off ebay to interrogate/clear codes/reset the TC system, and it's worked a treat. Worth keeping in the car just in case. The roof-lining has sagged - seems like they all do this. A few plastic tabs fixes that problem.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

New to Land Rover
Just took delivery of a 2014 Discovery and so far the wife and I love it. We'll never take it off road we have no desire to do so. people who don't 4WD are allowed to buy them!
Mid year update 11k in and it's as good as they say, quiet, smooth and efficient, the fuel economy got better as it got older. You really need to test drive one and find a way to afford I did and couldn't be happier.

I'd only change one thing...
Puchased a new SV4 (turbo diesel) delivered in Jan 2014. The car has been reliable and has lived up to every expectation.
I have 19" tyres and the car has done pretty full-on off road forays and it hasn't missed a beat. The off road modes are brilliant. Deep, soft sand that is common in WA are no problem (with tyres deflated). The car certainly can keep up with the best in class.

Great daily driver, big and comfy. Worth a try.
I was lucky with this purchase, as my more knowledgable "Land Rover" friends all had horror stories of TD5's. Despite their warnings, I had to have one. In 1999 my TD5 Series 2 was the price of a modest house. Now, a decent one like mine can be had for the price of a motor scooter. Why is this so? Easy answer is in one word; Fear.
Fear of things going wrong, and expensive trips to the specialist mechanic etc etc.
Luckily for me, my car at 365,000 klms had been well sorted. Everything works as it should, she doesn't leak oil (much), she's comf...Read more

Great car, highly recommend. I drive new cars for a living, and still competes with most of the new Japanese offerings. Hi I am looking to buy a discovery 4 2010.
At the moment two in my list
1. Tdv6 2.7 with 170000 km. Single turbo
2. Tdv6 se 3.0 with 180000km. Twin turbo.
Both are 2010 with $4000 more for the 3.0.
Is it safe to buy one after this many kms? If it is what are the things I have to look in to.Is turbo replacement common problem on any of this.
Which is better to maintain 2.7 or 3.0.
I only owned Japanese cars before and have done most of the works by myself(except removing engine parts) so any advice or information will be very helpful.
Thanks in advance

Hello Keleb, I too shared your apprehension about buying the Discovery 5. However, I ended up going ahead and bought my HSE in July 2022 and I do not have one regret! My wife and I have done 15,000km so far (due to Covid19 we have hardly travelled in the past few months) and 7,000km of that was towing our 20ft caravan from South Aust to outback Queensland and back. The car is so comfortable, has great power for towing, and we are extremely happy with the economy. Offroad, it has out performed any of the other 4WDs we have owned. It has not missed a beat. I'm not affiliated with Land Rover in any way, but I can easily say that this is the best car we have ever owned!
Thanks Deedub..I'll keep on the case...the change over price will be critical as will decent off road tyres which have been very hard to get for my current 2015 Disco 5.Any suggestions?
Sorry 2017 not 2015 Disco 5

My discovery 4 has done over 150000 kms since purchased new in 2010.
The 3 litre twin turbo diesel will tow all day and makes overtaking a reality! Interior wise, it's in a class of its own with tactile user friendly instruments and the Harmon /Kardon stereo is mind blowing. As for front recovery point mentioned in an earlier comment you will find it is positioned under a removable front spoiler in similar fashion to accessing the tow bar and rear recovery point. Here's to many more capable relaxed miles both on and off road.It would have to be the most comfortable drive I've ever had and combined with the practical flexible layout
