Noisy & expensive

published

We purchased this heater and were instantly disappointed at how noisy the fans are. The air intake fan "thrums" loudly and although we operated the heater fan on the lowest setting, it is still very noisy. We were told the heater would heat 170 square metres but there is no way it went close to being able to heat that area, it also used a great deal more pellets than the 1 bag every 2-3 days we were quoted and it was only operated from approx 5pm til around midnight. A huge disappointment all around. The dealership treated us fairly.

How much do pellet heaters cost to run?

As I have said in my initial review of our Pellet Fire, it's hard for me to say how expensive it is to run because I only use it as a secondary heater. I bought 20 bags of pellets 3 years ago and I still have 14 of them!
I have seen Pellets at Bunnings and Clennetts Mitre 10, so that may provide a bit of competition and keep the price down a bit but no guarantees of course.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

I’m concerned about increased electricity costs if I buy a pellet fire. How much did you notice your electricity bill increased after installing a pellet fire?

Hi Chris,
As I have said in my review, I only use the heater as a supplementary heater, so I can't really give a totally accurate answer. However, as far as I can see there are only two things that use power, the fan and the auger that delivers the pellets into the heater, neither of which would use that much power. The faster the fan, the more power you use but not a huge difference. If you leave the heater on standby, so that you can use the timer function, you will use some power but probably about the same as leaving the TV ready to be turned on using the remote. Assuming you are replacing a heater with a fan, there probably won't be much difference.
You should be able to get power consumption figures for the heater you are considering buying off the internet or from a brochure from Pellet Fires. My heater specifies it uses 110 Watts per hour, which at 32 cents per Kwh, works out about 3.5 cents per hour.
The pellets will be your biggest cost and how much that will be is hard to know as it is all dependant on use. What ever the cost that PFT is quoting for pellets for a year, consider that as a bare minimum, so double it and compare that to your current heating cost and see how the figures stack up.
Good Luck.

Our electricity account decreased immensely as previous to the pellet fire we used a heat pump. I think the heat pump is cheaper to use but the heating capacity is far less on the heat pump. I would not be without our pellet fire as our whole house is so much warmer. Also when the pellet fire goes out, the heat stays in the house longer unlike a heat pump when as soon as you turn it off, so does the heat. The pellet fire is our main source of heating and only use the heat pump when I clean the pellet fire out.
