WOW Upgrade
My pellet fire installed in 2004 finally had a malfunction recently in a part no longer available. 15 years of trouble free service was pretty good I thought. The design of the old one (American-style free standing) is still available so could still fit the design of the hearth, but I had to choose between two sizes. I went for the larger model which braggs greater capacity on the lowest setting than my old one had on the highest. It is proving excellent in every way. No the fan is no more obvious than the old model and not intrusive. My d...Read more
aughter calls it 'the sound of Winter'. The way this one moves the warmth around the very large living/kitchen/hall area has meant I do not need to use additional wall heaters in more distant areas of the house. When the sun is out I do need to turn off the heater in the middle of the day. Isn't that a nice thing to have to do! It saves on everything. I have been a convert to pellet heaters since 2004 and I am pleased that improved design since then has taken my satisfaction to a higher level again.Purchased in May 2021.

Easy & simple to use.
The heater is of neat appearance and very easy to use and clean. We only use ours as a secondary heater in a smaller part of the house, with a wood fire as the main source of heat in the rest of the house. However I can see that we would potentially replace the wood fire (when necessary) with a pellet heater. It's not quite the same as having a wood heater but probably as close as you will get. Not having to cut / stack wood will one day make the pellet heater more attractive than it already is, but not just yet!
Since the heater is not our ma...Read more
in heat source it's hard to comment on the cost efficiency of it but I learned from early experience that if it is left running on ''full strength" it will go through pellets quite quickly. Once I discussed this with the guys at Pellet Fires, I was reminded of a few features and able to slow it down to a more realistic usage. The pellet heater provides good heat within a short time of starting and also has a timer for starting up, which is a great way to go. I more recently purchased a battery back up from Pellet Fires as you don't want the power to go off when the heater hasn't had the chance to cool down. I also learned that from experience! The heater needs to cool off (which it controls automatically) before shutting down. However don't pay the shelf price they are showing for the battery backup because it is too expensive. You can do better than that. The service at Pellet Fires has always been excellent. I spoke to staff there on a number of occasions prior to buying both the heater and the battery backup (and at times in between, about matters relating to my wood heater which didn't come from them) and they were always very helpful. My only reason for not giving a 5 star review is that I haven't used the heater enough to be really happy to do that but a 4 star rating is may be a bit low. As I said above, I would consider eventually replacing my wood heater with a pellet heater, so I do like them.

Noisy & expensive
We purchased this heater and were instantly disappointed at how noisy the fans are. The air intake fan "thrums" loudly and although we operated the heater fan on the lowest setting, it is still very noisy. We were told the heater would heat 170 square metres but there is no way it went close to being able to heat that area, it also used a great deal more pellets than the 1 bag every 2-3 days we were quoted and it was only operated from approx 5pm til around midnight. A huge disappointment all around. The dealership treated us fairly.

Wonderful Clean Heating
We purchased the Macleod Wellington 13Kw wood pellet fire to try and heat our 15.6 square brick veneer house as our 9Kw heat pump/reverse cycle heater just wasn't doing it and we were sick of the draughts the heat pump gave. The heat pump is good for cooling but just did not give us the heating we liked. At first the wood pellet fire gave out too much heat but the staff of Pellet Fires Tasmania came and reset the heater. It is so easy to start, just press a button and to shut it off, press the button again. There is no kindling to cut, no w...Read more
ood to stack and definitely no ash and dirt settling with in the house to dust or pieces of wood around the fireplace. And no spiders or ants coming with a stack of wood! The glass door is easy to clean, just get some wet paper towel and wipe the glass and it is cleaned. When the heater is first started there is some smoke from the flue but that is only for a few minutes and then no smoke emissions. However, you do need somewhere to put the bags of pellets but they can be bought as often as you need them from Pellet Fires Tasmania and if you buy the heater from them, you only pay $10 per bag for the pellets. Our whole house is so much warmer and as often happens with winter in Tasmania, the afternoons can get warmer so you press a button to turn off the heater and turn it back on again when it gets cool again. No setting of the fire and chopping more kindling. This is really a combination of a standard wood heater and an electric heater. I think we will be paying a bit more for heating than we would have with the heat pump but our whole house is now warmer and there aren't any draughts.Similar opinion? How much do pellet heaters cost to run?
2 answers
As I have said in my initial review of our Pellet Fire, it's hard for me to say how expensive it is to run because I only use it as a secondary heater. I bought 20 bags of pellets 3 years ago and I still have 14 of them!
I have seen Pellets at Bunnings and Clennetts Mitre 10, so that may provide a bit of competition and keep the price down a bit but no guarantees of course.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Thanks anyway. We will look further

I’m concerned about increased electricity costs if I buy a pellet fire. How much did you notice your electricity bill increased after installing a pellet fire?

Hi Chris,
As I have said in my review, I only use the heater as a supplementary heater, so I can't really give a totally accurate answer. However, as far as I can see there are only two things that use power, the fan and the auger that delivers the pellets into the heater, neither of which would use that much power. The faster the fan, the more power you use but not a huge difference. If you leave the heater on standby, so that you can use the timer function, you will use some power but probably about the same as leaving the TV ready to be turned on using the remote. Assuming you are replacing a heater with a fan, there probably won't be much difference.
You should be able to get power consumption figures for the heater you are considering buying off the internet or from a brochure from Pellet Fires. My heater specifies it uses 110 Watts per hour, which at 32 cents per Kwh, works out about 3.5 cents per hour.
The pellets will be your biggest cost and how much that will be is hard to know as it is all dependant on use. What ever the cost that PFT is quoting for pellets for a year, consider that as a bare minimum, so double it and compare that to your current heating cost and see how the figures stack up.
Good Luck.
Half Happy.
Our electricity account decreased immensely as previous to the pellet fire we used a heat pump. I think the heat pump is cheaper to use but the heating capacity is far less on the heat pump. I would not be without our pellet fire as our whole house is so much warmer. Also when the pellet fire goes out, the heat stays in the house longer unlike a heat pump when as soon as you turn it off, so does the heat. The pellet fire is our main source of heating and only use the heat pump when I clean the pellet fire out.
Thanks for this info. Very enlightening.
