I have the same problem. Reading these comments it appears to be a common fault. Into the bin with it and purchase another iron I guess:-(

PowerLife Steam GC2960

Hi,
We have been very happy with our Philips GC2960 iron until today.
Suddenly, the iron does not heat at all and the Auto Lite flicker only occasionally when placed on the soleplate for > 30 seconds. It does nothing in the upright position.
Assuming the problem it is smoothing to do with the orientation timer is there any way to check this and or fix it.

Hi Sally, thank you for your question. The safety auto off function works after 30 seconds when the iron is placed on the soleplate and after 8 minutes of no use when it is placed on the back. Does your iron immediately turn off or after a while? This way we will know whether it’s a product error or not. Another question I have for you is whether you’ve had the iron for a while and already descaled it? Hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards,

The Philips Australia Team.

I'm also having the problem of scorching on the sole plate. The setting wasn't too high as I was ironing 100% cotton bags and I had the heat set to just below the Cotton/Linen setting. I don't want to use abrasives and destroy the sole plate but nothing is removing the scorches. Can you tell me how to remove the marks please?

When the iron is left on inadvertently- does the auto/off function mean just that the temperature is reduced or that it actually ceases heating, ie would it be safe all day?
