Have exactly the same problem so far nearly every trip have had some sort of issue with the Redback just over 6 months old

I had the same problem after 17 hours op. So did my friend. Had to start by hand and shut down by fuel starvation. I took mine back to iTech who charged $75 for a service. They replaced the ignition and remote but when I got it home it would not start at all. Took it back, they refused to do anything claiming that the problem was the result of my abuse of the unit. A local workshop could not start it either. Said there was no compression. Funny how it was working OK before service but not after. Consumer Affairs were no help. Bought a Honda 2.2 as a replacement. Similar price, same job, reliable.

Mine did the same after a week or so (remote stopped working and key would not turn off) - only way to shut down was with choke

Had something similar check the spark plug lead is not loose apparently if it is it’s not their problem it’s a maintenance issue

Corrin

My key start failed within 17 hours/4 months of new. Had to start it with the cord. Took it back to iTech who charged $75 upfront for service. Picked it up took it home. Found that they changed the key start but the battery was flat. But it would not start with cord. Took it back but iTech refused to touch it claiming that I had voided the (5 year) warrantee because there was dust in the cover and some corrosion on internal alloy parts. Took it to a local work shop who said they could not start it because there was no compression. Plenty of spark and air cleaner clean as a whistle. iTech tells Consumer Affairs that the motor is stuffed because of my misuse. Funny how it was running OK before I took it to iTech for service ($75) but not after ????? $1,500 down the drain. Good luck.

What is it's full load decibel level ? Does anyone know ?

Can't answer that question just now. The key start on mine failed within 3 months and 17 hours operation. Still used it tho because the pull start was working OK. Paid ITech World $75 in advance for a 20 hour service. They replaced the key start OK but claimed the generator was US because I had breached the guarantee. They wanted to sell me a new one at full price. I declined. On return home the battery was flat and the pull start was jammed. Could not use it at all. Back to ITech World. They refused to touch it even tho the pull start was working OK when I first took it to them. They still kept my $75. Now the generator is with a Mandurah work shop for testing and a full service report at a cost of $25. More later.

What make and model os the motor in the redback please

Not sure what country but thinking Chinese same manufacturer as the Full Bore sold by Bunnings

Corrin

Make and model unknown. Probably the same Chinese factory as the Mickey Blue. Both have similar problems which is why Mickey closed his shop in Midvale. You might be better to look at the Honda eu22 which can be had with extras for about $1,800. Known maker, same price range, does the same job and 12 kg lighter.

James M.Redback Generators

Hi Jessie,

The make is Redback which is an Australian owned and operated company.
The engine used is Hyundai OEM.
The Redback carries a 5 years warranty.

does the air cooling come from underneath the generator

Hugh W.

Yes the air cooling comes from underneath so you need to have the detector sitting on some sort of base
I use a base that is vented

Corrin
Corrin

It is one of only 2 generators I have found which ventilates from underneath. A design fault in my opinion.

Dumb question, perhaps, but can I use the RB4 to run a single home split-system aircon rated at 2.2kW total for inside/outside modules? I live in Melb & am convinced we are in for a dismal supply future. I have already installed a Sonnen battery but that will not handle the air con load & was purchased for fridge, TV & some lighting backup. I realise I'll need a changeover switch at the compressor to connect to a generator.

Ben I have the same problem. For some reason the fuel cap can't seem to breath. I ran the genny with the cap off just to prove this which it does. I am having trouble with other issues and it's going back for the second time. I prefer not to say too much in this forum.

I just dropped mine of on Friday after only running it in, then running it for 4 hours as I had the same problem. Will see what they say about it on Monday sometime. I’m with the circus and everyone says why did I buy it and not a Honda or Yamaha. Well I will see if I made a error or not soon.

I am thinking of replacing my Honda 3000 Inverter Generator with your 5 KVA unit advertised in the Wanderer. Is it smaller L.W.H. than the Honda as it must fit in the Special generator compartment c/w slide out & 240 wiring etc in the Motorhome.
Are there service outlets for warranty work, if required, in Melbourne.
Thanks
Brian.

If the generator is efi why does it have a choke efi does not need a choke as the ECU compensates with extra fuel my redback wont cold start with out applying the choke which means they are not true efi or you would not need a choke to start can you explain this please?

Willandra
Willandra

No idea, and I suspect the advertising copywriter also has no idea. You are of course quite correct, no choke on an EFI system.

Redback Generators
James M.Redback Generators

Hi Russell,

Thanks for getting in touch.
The Redback RB4 uses an Electronic Fuel Injector that is controlled from the inverter board. It is not a fully injected motor.
The injector is connected to the carby assemble and can be seen clearly as its blue.
The purpose of this injector is to help with starting the Redback RB4.
If you are having issues with starting your Redback RB4, please contact the store you purchased the Redback RB4 from for assistance.
