Head Gasket
I have owned a Subaru Forestor 2003 for 10 years and found it to be a good family vehicle. The only issue with the car, and it is a common problem with Subarus is the head gasket needing replacment. Be prepared for anywhere between $2,000 and $3,000 to repair. I contacted Subaru Aust. about it as I believe it is a fault due to the amount of failures reported on the internet however they were not prepared to assist in any way.
Car like driving, can cope with light off road tasks, good on holiday trips with the family. Love the pillarless doors.
Head Gasket failure...expensive repair. Also the motor is fairly flat initially in non turbo form. Carpet seems cheap, not plush.

2004 Subaru Forester X
I have owned this Forester since 2008 with 140000k, it has been a daily driver, weekender and done a road trip from Brisbane to Melb and back. This is a very reliable vehicle, infact it has never broken down since owning it, we had all 4 brake discs replaced recently as they were all worn down, I had it serviced once at Subaru, never again. What looked to be a slight wetness on the block gave them cause to quote me $4000+ for new head gasket, belts, timing chain etc etc etc. Took it to a Kmart auto service centre and was told it is nothing t...Read more
o worry about and is road worthy, $120 later and back on the road. This car drives flawlessly, have never faulted the handling and feels to be a very safe car in all aspects. Bit thirsty on fuel, tried E10 fuel but it caued the engine to ping so immediately back on to unleaded. safe, very very reliable, holds is value well, comfortable, lots of space thirsty on fuel, road/wind noise,Similar opinion? Very expensive to maintain
Purchased new in 2005. Limited leg room in the back however very happy with the car except for maintenance costs. Have only done 70k and have had to replace timing belt ($1700) now head asker needs replacing and dealer quoted $4,500. Eac service costs between $300 and $700. I intended to keep for 10 years and replace with another Subaru but due to poor service from Subaru dealer and no feedback from Subaru company I won't be buying another Subaru
Good handling. Plenty of cup holders.
Very expensive to maintain

I got sucked into the deal of the dealer extending my warranty if I had all my servicing done there. The irony was that nothing went wrong that was covered by warranty. I have been using another mecha... Read more

Bad
Bit of a rant - sorry.
Our family has a 2003 XS and a 2006 XT, both owned from new & serviced per schedule. We got the XT just before the XS started to show some problems.
Here are some highlights:-
XS:- 100k major service - cost $1700. This included replacing not only the timing belt, but also the t.b. tensioner and pulley.(what??? never, ever had to do this before). Now, at 125k, it has a suspected blown head gasket - estimated repairs - $3,000. This is not a high mileage, and this sort of expense is simply not acceptable.
XT (just $40k...Read more

Bad
I was quite satisfied with the car, never used oil or coolant or anything until the 4 years service (car only had 70000) had to change the timing belt cost of service $1040 while servicing they found that the car needed new flywheel, new clutch, new head gasket cost: $5600 none of this was ever mentioned the previous services???. I never drove the car hard??? (I am 60 years old). My opinion is that it's a very good car if you only keep it 3 years.
Forester X: practical, lots of small but helpful gadgets, good safety rating.
Service is very expensive, big expensive repairs strait after the warranty periode.

Excellent Car But Fairly High maintenance
Bought new in July 2002. Now covered 256000kms at an average fuel consumption of 8.9l/100 kms. Oil consumption about 1 litre between services from new. Car was lifted, 40 mm, at 50000kms with Aluminum sump guard, front and rear bars fitted all by SubaXtreme. Low range fitted at about 85000kms.
Few major problems but many unexpected minor probs.
Serviced with (VERY EXPENSIVE)Subaru dealer until 100000kms, then independent mechanics since at recommended service intervals. Reasonable costs.
Timing belts replaced at 100000, and mutiples thereof,...Read more

Yeah I don't know why their spare part prices are so much more than other Japanese cars
Replace your spark plug leads to get rid of misfire. DM clutch waste of space, radiator fail at 165k, TB at 100k. get parts from USA at half to third of price.
Dont let the oil leak go for too long. There will be oil mixing with water accross the head gasket leakage area. So problem will continue to worsen and then the gasket will go and engine will overhea... Read more

Subaru's reputation of reliability is undeserved
I purchased the Subaru Forester new in 2003. It was then the top of the line model for the current range of Foresters with the new 2.5l boxer motor, more rear leg room, boot space and higher ground clearance. Leather seats, sunroof, climate control etc. and good off-road AWD ability, with room for the dog in the boot, made this car seem the perfect solution for me at the time. If it would have endured for 10 years with regular service up to 200,000 kms and no major repair problems then Subaru would have justly earned its reputation of making...Read more
well-built, reliable cars. Alas, that has not been my experience. All went well (or almost) within the 3 year warranty period and up to 100,000 kms of light driving. Since then, it has been an ongoing saga of unforeseen and unexpected continuing mechanical problems and costly repairs. At 172,000 kms now facing the problem of a complete gearbox renewal. This is after 3 dual-mass fly wheels, all struts and springs collapsed and replaced, seised sunroof, seised driver's side window mechanism and electronics - the list goes on. Climate control. Anchor points in boot space. Good front vision from driving position. Unreliable mechanics, Poor engine performace. Very costly to service and repair, Uncomfortable seats.1 comment

ng over $5000. This car then got to 212 kms with nothing else major (but i was always waiting for the worst). It then got written off last year (2014) in an accident. To give credit to Subaru it survived a major side impact with no damage at all to internal cabin. The side air bags did not go off and I stepped out of the car with the motor still running and it was still driveable (just). I replaced this car with a later early 2005 year model Forester that I picked up cheap from my local mechanic. He had serviced this car from new with a single owner, knew its history and was willing to give a 6 months warranty on all parts and 12 months free servicing. It is essentially the same model as my 2002/2003 Subaru but in the standard range. This new/old Subaru Forester had already done 205 Kms, but mainly long country kms. It needed a replacement radiator within 1 month of purchase, but for last 6 months it is powering on with no problems. The motor (although the same in my old 2002) seems more freely turning with better lower down torque. Certainly gets up steep hills better. The shocks and springs feel spongy, but about what you would expect and pretty good for a 200+ km vehicle used for long trips and over some rough ground. My only complaint about this standard model is that it is missing the climate control that the 2002/2003 model had and always worked faultlessly. The air/con in the newer 2005 model just seems to cope in 30 degrees plus outside temperatures. So there you have it. The worst and best of these early model (second series) Subaru Foresters. I swore after the continuing mechanical and accessory failures that I experienced with the 2002/2003 model that I would never buy another Subaru. But I did buy the later, and my current 2005 model, and so far it has restored my faith in Subaru that first came from my Imprezza GX 1996.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Love my Forester so much I'm intending to upgrade to a new 1! My only problem is with the carseats as Ive pointed out in the cons section. I also love the vision it has because of its shape. I recebtly drove a mazda & Honda CRV - it is so much better than both of those as far as drive and blind spots!
Arm rests, charger points(3) & other gadgets such as cup holders (4) and storage spaces. Very reliable & looks great. Has great vision - reducing blindspots.
Small backseat. Baby carseats consume the space & attach to the roof eating into boot space also.

Good
I owned a 97 Forester and was so happy with it that I upgraded to a 2006 Lusury. Whilst the 2.5lt motor has more power and is quieter, it also uses about 1 lt. more fuel per 100km. With the improved road holding comes a harsher ride compared to the older models. Was initially concerned about the leather seats in summer, but they are surprisingly cool and feel very supportive.
Excellent auto gearbox, love the size of the sunroof, good sound system and solid feel. Impressed with the improvements to road holding.

Sold reliable car
I have owned the car since new. After 7 years and 125,000 km it has only had routine servicing and I am still on the original brake pads ! Great performance from the turbo engine and practical space for luggage and carrying toys.
Performance, reliability, good resale
Rear seats a bit small for passengers and child seats, servicing expensive, turbo is a bit thirsty and needs premium fuel

We bought the 2006 model brand new. The car fits me really well, it's hight is great for my bad back. However there have been allot of problems.
We have taken it 4WDing and it handled very well.
I do love this perticular car, it suit's me well. However if you have a large family or are tall you will find it to small.
The Engine problems were most likely random, however the service people should have picked up the problem sooner.
All the places to put things, there are allot of hidey holes

This is an amazing car. I have had many cars in my short time driving, however this is by far the best. It has does have a few area which could do with some improvement, however they are only minor. Good for a small family because I know that they are safe in it and when by myself it can be a lot of fun. This car is at it's best when you can really give it some and you will feel the rush. We have added larger wheels and low profile, fatter tyres which give it much better handling. It could do with bigger brakes but not needed during everyday dr...Read more

195000 kms, average 8.8 l/100kms. Consumption range high 7's to 10 around town on ULP, High 7's to 10+ with E10 fuel.
Uses about 1 litre oil between services.
Have taken back seat out and is very comfortable 2 seater with heaps of luggage room.
Excellent car. Mine has been lifted and has a 1.592 to 1 low range making it very versatile indeed. So far has been very reliable.
Expensive to repair.Service costs high. Too high.Dual mass flywheel a pain in the A!!!Some dash features a nuisance, for instance wipers come on on Accessory setting. Too easy to turn on wipers onto a dry screen when cleaning dash with radio on. Should be with full ignition position.

Would definitely buy another one, but probably the 6 cylinder version. Visibility to the rear is average, and I added reversing sensors which help a lot
Excellent durability, handling and economy. Not quite as sure-footed as the Liberty wagon but better ground clearance.
Not enough room to fit a bike in the back (unlike its sister the Liberty wagon). The 4 cylinder engine is just a little underpowered.

For me the visbility, particularly when reversing is the key plus. Then there is the comfort of having a full size spare. Also the security on Tasmania's roads of the all wheel drive, given our a ttimes very ordinary weather conditions.
I have owned an 07 Forester X auto since the end of April, have run some 4,000kms and like the entire package, partucularly the visibilty.
I have had 4 instances of the engine pinging when under load in top gear, but have cured this by now running it on premium unleaded. A it's first service the dealer will have to sort this out, as I want to return to running it on regular unleaded.

Overall it is a good solid car. While I have not driven the manual I have heard that it is better in the automatic and I could definetly testify to this. There is plenty of room in the boot for my 2 dogs to travel comfortably. In fact it is a very comfortale car for the whole family with convienent storage compartments and the features have clearly been given considerable thought. I have enjoyed driving it and could highly recommend this car.
It drives very nicely. It feels solid on the road and can definetly go. The space in the boot is great and is very versatile (seats down and removing the sun shield).
The back seat is a little squishy

I have the Forester basic model for 2005. This 4wd is probaby one of the smallest in the range but is a great family car. I upgraded to this vehicle because I have a newborn and a 19 month old and I needed the extra room at the back for the 2 baby car seats as well as a large boot to fit my double pram. I love this car as it is not too big for a 4WD.
Great family car, not too big in size but plenty of space
None really since there are plenty of additional extras to cater for most needs

Overall a very easy car to drive which handles well, but consumes a lot of petrol for the small distances i drive it. Also, internal layout is not very clever as the back seat seems very tight.
This car handles beautifully and is a pleasure to drive. Although it is not a small car it is fairly easy to manouvre. It got very high safety ratings. I like the way that the back seats are split, so that you have the flexibility to decide what portion of the back seats you want to collapse. The noise insulation in the car is fantastic. Excellent 2.5L engine size to weight to fuel economy ratio. Plenty of grunt for overtaking up hills or cruising the highways. Reliability. Haven't had a single problem. Auto Gear change is spot on. Hey, i dont know a huge amount about cars. But as long as the car is well looked after it should be ok. But that is high kms for a 2008 model.
Make sure the timing belt has been changed.
Check the service history, if not consult a mechanic that you trust to give the car a going over.
Thats not a big mileage these days but just ensure that the service history is up to scratch and as previously mentioned the timing belt has been changed i know of a 2009 model that has nearly 450,000 km on the clock that has only had consumables replaced and is immaculate
