Bad
The models of Forester produced in the couple of years after 2003 are great cars, reliable and sturdy. They can tackle pretty rough off-road terrain and also fit easily into suburban environment. Their fuel economy isn't great, but is better than more extreme off-road vehicles and there's a lot of boot space. They're much like their earlier counterparts but with a few more extras and some refinements made to the design.
However, more recently the design of the Forester has changed dramatically. They've started to become a luxury car. While m...Read more
ore comfortable seats are a welcome change from the hard ones common to earlier models, they still don't match up to the seats in other Subarus and the changes don't stop there. Their handling is designed to give a smooth ride on a city street, not to provide the grunt and quick responses needed to tackle off-road terrain. Everything inside that can be made electronic has been, which just makes it that much slower to use. The exterior now curves elegantly, making them pretty but also making it harder to get large objects into the boot. The material covering the boot space isn't as sturdy and you just can't fit as much in. The Foresters are still great suburban cars, but off-road vehicle capable of taking the amount of gear needed for a serious trip they aren't. And their price has risen with all the added features, putting them above the range of the simple family car they used to be. A vehicle that works well in off-road situations and is also practical for suburban and city usage. Reliable and sturdy with little maintenance needed to keep them running smoothly. The Foresters produced in the last couple of years are no longer off-road vehicles. Replacement parts can be very expensive.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Overall, happy with the vehicle, have issues with Subaru staff on occasion but do my servicing myself so thankfully only have to deal with them once a year or so at the spare parts counter. I have experienced MUCH better and IMMEDIATE service with Peugeot, who also by the way provide free of charge (usually better models than your own car) a courtesy car until my vehicle is ready.

rols were also a plus. The tyres however (Yokohama Geolandar G900 fitted as standard) should have been shelved during the design phase as they have neither the grip, durability, longevity or cornering ability that the vehicle is capable of. I am sure ALL other reviewers will agree on this issue. A benefit of Subaru is the Upper Engine Cleanner (UEC) - It's an aerosol that you spray half into the throttle body intake and leave it to dissolve the carbon deposits, then start the engine and spray the remainder with the engine running at about 2500rpm. White smoke goes everywhere out of the exhaust (this is the carbon deposits from the engine coming out) and when the exhaust is clear the procedure is done. It's meant to be done every 12500km. I use it on my camry too because it works so well. Not much really, however the technician forgot to bolt on the engine cover after servicing it once. He was informed of the mistake and the issue was fixed. Again, as with boxer engines they tend to be gravely but the newer generation ones seem to be quieter, more economical, smoother and more responsive. 1st to 2nd gear in the manual can be hard to make a smooth change in a quick take off. Stereo should be better for a car priced at around $47000, the 'subwoofer' produces less bass than if I was to eat a can of baked beans and wait a few hours. The dealerships need to really learn customer service skills and treat us as their livelihood and not a waste of their time or an interruption of their personal phone calls. This lack of personal customer service has been seen in no less than 3 Subaru dealerships. If they rest on their laurels with the quality of their product the tides will soon turn

I really like this car. It is quite noisy (for a family car but quite reasonable for a turbo and an all wheel drive), thirsty and drinks premium, but it is a 2.5 turbo all wheel drive and you could really feel where the petrol has gone to because there is just SO MUCH POWER!!! It is a tall and square-ish lookin car but the symmetrical all wheel drives allows every single NM of power to work at every imaginable slop and corners, put your right foot down and it would go no matter what its carrying and what road it is on, you could have rolled out...Read more
of your seat but the Forester would still be between the dotted lines. This car is a wolf / work horse wearing sheep skin, and of cause, with heaps of air bags and ABS, EBD. As for the sheep skin, it looks decent, smart, almost classy, but not intimidating. The interior material is quality and feels very tough. The lay out is tidy. A sun roof that starts at the front and goes all the way to the back, everyone enjoys the sun~! My only complain of this car are the dials on the dash, they are ridiculously small, but thats just me, I found it really difficult to read. Forester XT Luxury: A bit more than enough room therefore very comfie but easy to park, dripping with speed and power, smooth ride, built tough inside and out, long list of option to pick from, sun roof that goes from the front seat to the back ABS, EBD. Thirsty, road noise, engine noise a bit much for a family car, the meters on the dash are too small and are difficult to read. The rain / wind guard on the doors are only like, 2cm wide, doesn't do much at all, the stereo isn't all that impressive.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

I can't speak inelligently about the mechanics of this car. All I know is that it's great to drive. I am short so being able to see the left hand edge of the bonnet is really important to me - and I can without the feeling of being hoisted in the air like I imagine you'd get with one of the big 4WD's. The boot is really spacious and the leg room is more than sufficent. (our 6' 2" son gets a comffy ride in the back) The stereo is great. Love my red Subaru.
Forester XT Luxury: Great visability. Smooth to drive. Quiet. Looks great!
fuel ecconomy could improve.

The Forester XT is hugely fun to drive with acceleration and handling more like a sports sedan than an SUV (but replace the original wheels and tires with premium tires suited to the car's intented use). Magically big on the inside but smaller than it looks, actually smaller than a 3 series BMW. Super reliable.
Handles like a sports car and the turbo has a better weight to power ration than most SUVs and staion wagons. Huge sunroof. Convenient in-dash 6 CD player. Plenty of storage. Fully automated climate control. Roomy and comfortable....Read more

I absolutely love this car. It is my second Subaru and my first Forester. I did a lot of research before buying it to determine the right model and features for me, and having discounted other makes and models I am very happy with it. I happened to buy the MY05 from someone who was upgrading to the MY07, at time of purchase the previous owner confirmed my decision with this quote "you are getting the better car, it far outperforms the newer model". Looking forward to many happy driving days in the Forester!

My 03 Forester XS has now done 106,500kms+ and has returned 9.27L/100K for combined City/Hwy cycles and that is acceptable to me at the present time. I like the safety and build quality of Subaru's over a lot of other vehicles that compete with it in the sales arena as I said in the Pros section safety was the #1 reason why I bought a Subaru and that continues to be prime consideration when buying a new vehicle. I would recommend a Subaru to anybody who is in the market for a new vehicle but a lot of people consider them to be under powered but...Read more
the new (2004 onward) 2.5L engine has solved that problem in my opinion. I have driven a friends 04 model Forester and the difference between the 2 engines for power is very noticeable to me. Safety - Reliability - Warranty - build quality & AWD are the main reasons for my buying Subaru over any comparable sized car/SUV.I have had 2 Warranty issues on 2 x different model Subaru's (Liberty & Forester) and both have been dealt with promptly and without fuss or argument.I would recommend a Subaru to anybody for the above reasons and I will definitely be buying another one when the time comes. In my opinion once you have driven an AWD vehicle for awhile it is very hard to go back to either a front or rear wheel drive and feel comfortable with the vehicles handling ability. The rear seat leg room in both Subaru's I have owned could be a little bigger to accommodate adults comfortably. The Subaru paintwork is not the worst I have seen on an imported vehicle but it does leave room for improvement. The squab on the 2 x front seats in the 03 Forester could be a little longer and wider to suit the Australian body.1 comment

Great car. No regrets. Economical for it's size. I would recommend it to any one as an all rounder.
I love the practicality of this car. 2.5L boxer engine is well matched to the size. The steering wheel is adjustable and the seats are comfortable. Despite being a reasonably large car it does not feel cumbersome and it drives more like a car than a 4wd.
Gearbox is not the smoothest. Clutch doesn't have much feel. the speakers are pretty ordinary. Rear cup holders are flimsy. Seat belt alarm can be a total pain if you aren't even driving on the road.

At first, I was a bit cynical about driving a Forester, thinking it'll be a bulky car to drive. But now, I really enjoy driving it as it feels more like a sedan than a big 4WD. Its a comfortable, easy car to drive and has plenty of room for my family, with enough space in the boot for the pram and the shopping, whilst it still fits easily in the garage.
Great visibility considering its not a huge car. Easy maneuverability. Good dash layout. Lots of storage areas. Big boot. Several anchor points for baby seats. Good safety rating.
Not very roomy inside, but we're used to small/medium sized cars. Not very powerful but enough grunt for city driving. Could be more fuel efficient.

A terrific car that would have to be the best i have owned taking into account all factors. The knowledge that you can get into it and have a bit of fun or drive very casually without getting bitten. Just love to drive it anywhere anytime, day or night, country, city or peak hour traffic (stereo keeps me occupied). Would have to be one of the best (if not only) performance wagons in the world for the price.

This is a fantastic car. It handles very well and although it isn't suited to very rough terrain it is slightly higher then a sedan which gives you better clearance. It offers plenty of space in the boot and has the option of folding down the back seats for even more space. It rides like a sedan and would be great for a couple who don't have children and want plenty of space or for a family who doesn't have a newborn or won't need to put a newborn in the back.

The car was purchased because of the safety factor as I do a lot of work kms.
However, I can park this car next to any AWD/4WD vehicles that cost a lot more and "it can hold its head up high because it looks so good!It is comfortable over long trips and easy to park.
MY08 X with Columbia pack ie. leather seats, sunroof, roof rack, tinted windows. Have only had it for 3 months and purchased because of the safety rating. Monchromatic silver. Looks great and performs well.
Automatic so does lack a bit of "grunt" and there is a delay when quick acceleration is needed. However, had a VW golf and that was the same.

Highly recommend this car to anyone, I love the power and luxury with the XT Luxury pack, the leather makes for easy cleaning and they are a great looking car. I've taken it interstate with ease and no problems, it can easily go off road (not to extremes off course).
Very nice car, plenty of power, boot room. Very reliable, fairly economical having the turbo model. Excellent performance, good safety rating. I recommend the rubber mat in the boot, it makes cleaning a whole lot easier.
The back seats are very small, I cant put any baby seat as the seat belts are too short to reach over the seat.

Great car. Love driving it and have to fight the wife on who takes the RAV and who gets the subie.
Love the look on the 'pretend V8 supercar falcon and commodore drivers' when a little 4WD blows them away at lights - especially in the wet!
MY05 XT. This is my 3rd subie and the best. Have 75k km on it. Prev 1990 liberty, 1993 liberty RS turbo. The 2.5 with small turbo gives great low down power. On the open road the cruise control easily keeps speed on hills etc in 5th gear. No need to change down. Love the AWD with LSD in the rear, goes anywhe...Read more

Questions & Answers
Jon M.asked
Started the vehicle this morning and let it idle for 90 seconds with my foot on the clutch...dog escaped so I took foot of clutch and got out to retrieve dog (all up...about 30seconds).
Heard a gear grating noise behind me and watched the car jump forward, then stall. Bugger said I.
Put dog away and went back out to the car.
Got in - tried the gear stick and it balked at all gears. Started the car with foot on the clutch and engine started, no problem. No engagement of gearbox.
Went to engage gears - which I couldn't, so I took my foot of the clutch which promptly stalled the engine.
Gearbox stuck in 5th gear.
Any body had a similar experience? Time for a new gearbox?

I am looking to buy Forester which is 2008 and driven 220ks, Is it recommended to buy such high ks in petrol with 2.5 lts engine?

Hey, i dont know a huge amount about cars. But as long as the car is well looked after it should be ok. But that is high kms for a 2008 model.
Make sure the timing belt has been changed.
Check the service history, if not consult a mechanic that you trust to give the car a going over.
Thats not a big mileage these days but just ensure that the service history is up to scratch and as previously mentioned the timing belt has been changed i know of a 2009 model that has nearly 450,000 km on the clock that has only had consumables replaced and is immaculate
