No guts on a hill
Bought a new 2013 Forester diesel, had it now for 19 months.
Good on the road and economical but this is definitely my last Subaru. It can't pull the steep hill behind our property, no guts at low speed and too high geared. My wife's Ford Focus Trend auto goes up easily. The Forester clutch also gives every sign that it can't handle that sort of work - just a few revs and slipping the clutch briefly to make up for the lack of guts causes a burning smell.
My old 2005 Forester went up so easily in low range. So did my old Brumby. Old ...Read more
two wheel drive cars go up ok, but not this crappy Forester diesel. The whole ownership has been awful - as well as this, a speedometer I can't read and Subaru staff that lied under oath at a tribunal hearing about that. New Forester 2.5L continuously variable transmission (CVT) 2013
We bought a new Forester 2013. Nice car to drive, We bought the 2.5L petrol with the eyesight and adaptive cruise control. The cruise control is a bit freaky when you are not used to it. I don't like the way it keeps braking when a car in front turns off to the left and there is a clear gap to the right to take off into but the cruise keeps reducing speed and braking to match the slowing turning car. Drivers behind wonder why you are braking.
Plenty of room inside. Cargo area is a bit small, as to is the size of the reversing camera screen. T...Read more

Great car
My second xt premium with an Audi in the middle! Standard of appointments and power alone are enough to convince me. Easily tows a horse float or a caravan at freeway speeds. Service experience 2nd to none (eastern Subaru lilydale) oh the Audi .... Never again! Purchased new, great looking, fun to drive and capable of reasonable off road work

Eyesight coupled with great CVT a leader
I've owned my Forester since new for 15 months. We have been everywhere in it fro city to highway to bush tracks and through soft sand.
Unfortunately the CVT gets bad press from dinosaur motoring writers but I can attest that it is fantastic. We recently drove the Snowy Mountains Highway through driving rain and a long winding steep descent. I set cruise control and used eyesight to follow a vehicle whose driver seemed to know the roads. It followed perfectly without any input from me.
On the steep descent I set cruise at 50 Kms / hr and the...Read more

2014 Subaru Forester
This is my second Forester. The first was the S3 2009, I bought it 2nd hand with only 9000 on the clock. I stepped out of a Commodore and into the S3 because I needed more usability.
Two things in the S3 2.5l Auto was the fuel consumption 10+ around town and the 4 speed auto. The auto had trouble deciding between 1st 2nd and 3rd at slow speeds. Other than that it was a pleasure to drive.
This year we got an S4 2.5l CVT. This is car seems only distantly related to the S3. Larger, higher and less thirsty. To date it's life average is 8.6 (...Read more
but can you believe the Subaru's data?). It is better to drive than the S3 with more seat adjustment and the passenger seat is set higher than the old one. The CVT, works like magic, it is interesting to drive when you put your foot down to 4000rpm and feel it accelerate without any discernible gear shift. The revs don't drop until you lift your foot. I guess the only draw back may be the long term performance of the CVT. They are relatively new so if it lasts 10 years then you could probably consider them reliable.Similar opinion? Subaru Forester XT Premium Review - Honest Pros & Cons
We were deciding between Forester S or XT, decided for a 4k extra we opted for the more powerful engine. Love the acceleration for an SUV, the looks, as powerful as a v6, fuel mileage expected around 9-9.5 on 95ron, can do between 8-8.5 on freeway. haven't revved hard on the suv yet but 7.5 secs to 100km is definitely achievable, probably more if use S mode. Back seat can alter angle - great for long trips. heaps of leg room for rear, slightly smaller boot compare to others but enough for use
Disappointments include poor screen resolutio...Read more

2014 Subaru Forester XT Premium
So far my only problem is the low beam headlights. The halogen units are designed to throw light out to the sides, so visibility directly in front is poor. Also once dark the Eyesight constantly disables (as it can't even see), which also disengages the cruise control, which can be very annoying.
For example, I travel a 100km round trip to work everyday, 20km is unsealed roads. Whilst on the unsealed road (before I had sidesteps fitted I was only doing a max of 40km/h) I had a very large kangaroo sitting in the middle of the road in front of...Read more
me. It wasn't moving so I turned off the high beam lights in case the bright light was stunning it, and I was shocked to discover the kangaroo only 3 metres in front of me disappeared! I had the vehicle back at the dealer the next day. They are currently still looking into this, but have suggested I use high beam at all times where possible. Hopefully this is rectified very soon. Everything else I love! We went to Sydney and back last weekend and not one problem! Went awesome on fuel, was averaging 8.2l/100km (which was a huge concern for before purchasing vehicle as a lot of Subaru's have a reputation for using a lot of fuel) but it uses less fuel than my last vehicle (2013 Kia Sportage) and performs better, is more comfortable, better quality, overall better vehicle (you get what you pay for). Comfort, performance, ride, fuel consumption, looks and finishes Low beam head lights - poor visability2 comments
We parted with our Forester after 18 months and 43 000km later. Beautiful vehicle - was shame it had the light issue and major problems with the air con (had it towed 6 months in from the air con prob... Read more

SUV that excels
The 2013 Subaru Forester XT Premium is the most sure footed powerful SUV in its class and price range. It might be lacking the boy racer bonnet air intake but you soon release the XT can get you down the road very quickly with its 177kw turbo 2 litre engine with CVT transmission. The eye sight safety technology is a great feature but my only issue is it will turn its self off if the sun is directly effecting the cameras and like wise if raining very heavily but will turn on again automatically once the eye sight can read the road.

I took a 2016 forester diesel for a test drive, its MY17 i believe. Its a manual...and i loved how it drove! My question is, how do i know if its a 2.0D or 2.0D-L model? Does the vin number give any indication?

Hi @Angie E., The MY17 Forester diesel comes in the 2.0D-L or 2.0D-S variants. You're welcome to private message us through Facebook or send us an email at [email protected] with the VIN and we can confirm for you. The Subaru Team.
So it would be the 2.0D L, as it doesnt have the sunroof and driver assist etc.

Hi @Angie E., If it does not have a sunroof then yes, it would be a 2.0D-L. To be sure, it would be best to send us your VIN as previously advised. The Subaru Team.

Hi guys,
I am about to purchase a outback or forester in next few weeks. But I am really confused which one I would go for, pretty much I know ab both the vehicle specifications.
Though I want to know which one be more reliable to use for a family trips and cit driving all?
I am looking for top of the range model in both model, can anyone help me in this case?

I think it all depends on what size you want and which model suits your needs best. I drove both but prefer the Forester. It just felt more comfortable to me.
Thank you Karen, anyway I’ll test drive the forester and decide which one I go for
Just bought the top of the range 2022 forester in December abd I am 100% happy. Have done almost 5000kms already. Easier to drive and park than my previous Ford Focus due to much better visibility, height and of course the cameras. The auto transmission is much smoother. I was worried initially about getting another CVT after my experience with the Focus. Fuel consumption currently 8 4/100kms. I feel safe, drives smoothly and is quiet. The driver recognition camera seems a bit glitchy as it doesn't always recognize me when i get it but my son who also drives it never has the same problem despite this I haven't regretted my purchase.

o drive. Anyone with a licence knows it is illegal to use high beam lights at all times. Many drivers also know how irritating and dangerous it can be when there is an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle following you that fails to dim their high beam lights. So for subaru to suggest i use high beam instead of low beam on 'country roads' was the not a nice insult to give a customer who just paid them over $50k on a car.
