Hi,
I just purchased a Sunbeam Barista Max EM5300.
Has sunbeam changed the design or manufacturer of EM5300?
The most recent reviews, all stated power faults and leaking machines.
Am I better off, to not open my machine and just return it if it is a known issue?
Thanks Mel

I've had my machine for 14 months and been extremely happy. However over past few days the extraction pour for double shot - has doubled in size. It now pours almost whole cup for a double shot. Can it be re-set?

Hi, we bought this machine yesterday for my husband for Fathers Day today. We had a couple of lovely coffees this morning, but tonight when we went to make one the machine won’t turn on! We have tried a number of different power points, but nothing turning on. Looks like a return to Domayne tomorrow.
Really disappointed.

Hi Fiona, the exact same thing has happened to me, I am on my second machine. First one lasted 3 weeks, this one 6-8 weeks, go to turn on and no power at all. Off to David Jones to get a replacement again. Fingers crossed 3rd time lucky.

We’re on our second machine, the first was replaced due to water leaking out of the bottom, we’ve had the second machine for two months and it is also leaking from the bottom. Based on the number of complaints, I feel there is a design issue? Please advise if this has been rectified?

We got our coffee machine over the weekend, the first few coffees were great however now when we put the group handle in to make a coffee, water won’t push through the coffee into the cup. We have tried it multiple times with different levels of pressure pushing the coffee into the group handle but it hasn’t made a difference. Please help as this is frustrating. Thanks.

I only bought this machine today. Made 2 pretty good coffees but with the 3rd cup I can’t heat or froth the milk as there is only 5 seconds of steam. I turned the machine off for 10 minutes and tried again to no avail.

Hi, I bought a sunbeam barista max two weeks ago and today’s the third time using it. But the grinder seems jammed somehow as coffee grinds only come out when setting between 20-30. It’s been cleaned after used and I have followed instruction so not sure where went wrong? I have used both supermarket beans and beans from coffee shop. Many thanks!

Hello All!!

Overall happy with the machine. :) BUT alas there is a potential problem.

When heating the milk or expressing the coffee, water squirts out through the steaming wand. When the coffee is expressed, the pressure release works and still steam and water is ejected out of the steaming wand. Add to that, there is water (coffee mix now) left on top of the coffee in the filter basket even with a rough grind.

Have cleaned the machine etc without an improvement.

The above has developed over time. Oh, from the start only a rough grind would permit the water to get through.

Perhaps I should say somewhat happy but then, making our own coffee that is superior (now) to the local mob is always a happy outcome.

So, advice please Sunbeam and "Reviewers"!

Thanks and have fun!

Me!!

I've had my Barista Max since December, with no issues. This week, however it would be steaming out the thermo block as well as the steam wand whenever I froth the milk. When the group handle attached to the block, it builds such pressure that I can't remove it without risk of explosive depressurization!

Mine is doing this too. Bought it brand new in box from someone who’d won it, so no receipt to return for exchange anywhere. Keep getting zapped trying to use it - have given up now that water has started leaking from the grinder! Disappointing as it’s only 2 months old (or, came out of its box 2 months ago)...was a great little machine otherwise.

We have a Barista Max EM5300 and the coffee is fine. After making a coffee we have a lot of water under the machine (on the benchtop). we continually have to empty the drip tray (at least every 2 cups). We cannot see a leak and the excess water appears to be coming from the drip tray receiving slot. Any ideas as to how often we should empty the drip tray? or anything in the installation that would cause the excess water?

Hi Alan and Sunbeam...we have had our EM5300 for 6 months and now we have that same leaking issue. After a bit of investigation the leak is internal, and only occurs during the coffee making process. The water then leaks from the rear and underneath through holes in the black plastic base. We plan to take it back to Harvey Norman, but its a process because of the size of the machine and distance from the store.

Exactly the same problem here! Returned first machine, second one leaks after first operation, it must be something obvious, has anyone pulled these things apart?

I just got the sunbeam coffee machine last Friday. Husband and I used it on Saturday for the first time it worked great. The next day (and for the next few days) we used it again. Only this time, the water doesn’t come out when we press the one cup/ two cup option. We’ve measured the coffee beans accordingly, tampered it etc but the water doesn’t come out. When we pressed the ‘manual shot’ button, only then water comes out. Why is this happening?

I can’t seem to get the grind setting right
I use the double filter ( 22 gram) for 1 cup as recommended by a barista, when I use it on filter setting 20 or over the coffee taste sour but any less and barely a teaspoon of crema comes out after 30 seconds so obviously the grind is too fine.

I’m using good quality beans bought at the local coffee shop that are about three weeks old at room temperature
Anyone has any suggestions what setting will be good to get that sweet tasting coffee?
Thanks

I figured it out how to make a great cappuccino after 15 terrible coffees
Coffee shop sold me the wrong beans- yes, you have your ‘black coffee’ beans and your ‘cappuccino’ beans appearantly. So now I use one week old roasted beans in the one cup filter on the 24 grind setting with a light tamp ( about 5 kilo, check with kitchen scales how hard you press down) and a manual 32 second extraction
Perfect! just like my local coffee shop
A few things needs to be looked at by Sunbeam In my option - improving the temperature. My coffee is still not ‘hot’ enough eventhough I do heat up everything and adjusted the coffee extraction temperature to 96 C.
It be great if the basket can be heated by the group head such as in more expensive machines. It will help
Yes, it can be a messy business this machine so next time I buy a coffee machine these are the things I would look at
For now I’m happy thank you

Why is used coffee cake so wet? I've tried reducing coffee grinds but same. can it be low pump pressure that's causing this issue?

2 answers
Sunbeam
Customer C.Sunbeam

Hi Pup,
Thank you for your question. It can depend on the texture of the grind and also the amount packed into the filter basket. We recommend setting the grind to 20. The grind coming out should be close to that of castor sugar/sand. Once tamped/packed down into the filter basket, the gap from the level of the coffee to the lip of the basket should be 3-4mm. Hope this helps!

I've tried as suggested but still there's good amount of water in the filter basket

Hi
We recently bought this model about a month ago. Seemed fine the first half a dozen times. There seems to be excessive steam emanating from the purging area at the bottom of unit. This is occurring when using the steam function. By the time I have heated the milk. The front face of the unit is saturated in moisture as a result of the vapour. It seems to be getting progressively worse each time Ive used it. Also water is simultaneously coming through the group head as I’m using the steam wand/function. What is the reason for this?

Sunbeam
Customer C.Sunbeam

Hi Andy H, hard to say exactly but it appears there may be a pressure issue to regulate the water/steam.

Mine does the same, steam coming out the thermo block when I'm frothing the milk (shouldn't do that). Sunbeam gives everyone the same answer - call our service team in Australia! I called and after being on hold for about 20 minutes, I gave up. $700 down the drain - thanks for nothing Sunbeam!!

I read you have to manually hold the porta filter down to get the coffee beans in the basket, how do you know if the correct dose of ground coffee is achieved

Hi Laura,
Thank you for contacting Sunbeam. We recommend filling the filter basket so that when the final tamping is done there is a gap of about 4mm from the level of the coffee to the lip of the basket.

Hi ! The machine is great but I find as a problem that it doesn’t exist a single shot portafilter. When you use a regular espresso cup it spills the coffee all over since the coffee output are very separate. Any answer?

Hi Ariel,
Thank you for your question. Sunbeam do not manufacture a single spout handle/port filter. We suggest try a small funnel or using a larger glass under the spouts then pouring into a smaller glass.

Thanks for your answer. I don’t think that’s really a solution. As I said i find the machine great but this is a serious limitation. Thanks again

The grinder keeps jamming on my Sunbeam Barista Max EM5300. I am absolutely fed up with cleaning the beans out and starting again and trying to work out what's wrong. The machine is perfectly clean, we've tried different brands of coffee beans, different grinder settings. When I read all these good reviews, I have to wonder if we got a dud. I've had about half a dozen good coffees out of about 50. It was purchased in December and I've hated this machine from the start, but the reviews don't seem to indicate too many problems like mine? I've watched the online videos, I think I'm doing everything right, but this machine seems nothing but a problem for me.

I don't think I want to persevere with it anymore. Might see what Myer can do about it. I'm convinced there's something wrong with it from the start. We've always had a coffee machine at home, this one is ruining my mornings!!
