Better brews than my Atomic
Ok, I have made lattes daily for 5 years in my Atomic, decided to purchase The Little Guy this year after knowing about Ottos for the last 3 years. Atomics are not cheap so the price of this machine didn't concern me much. Like Atomics, one has to get the feel of the machine in order to push out a superb coffee. And as any coffee freak would know, there are many variable factors that lead to a good coffee. I did laugh at some of the criticisms here on this site, as it certainly appears that a few of these people 'don't get it' ;o)
So 4 ...Read more
months into owning this machine I am cranking out full bodied coffee with beautiful crema and absolutely no issue frothing milk. Visitors and friends who find themselves at my place in the morning are always impressed with what I serve up. I am a fanatical coffee freak who must have freshly roasted beans and I hand grind (with a HARIO MINI MILL SLIM grinder) just before brewing. I did have one leaking issue from onset which turned out to be unusual lugs on my group handle, but one email to Craig Hirron and there was a new one in the mail without question. He was super supportive and very positive. Now having said all this, this machine is not an Atomic, it wont be going camping or to festivals with me. It requires more care and there are rubber seals that will need to be kept clean and maintained. It was also a surprise to read on this site that the inside tubes were made of heat resistant silicone. While I would like to trust the design, I have a fear that one day these may go? I would think these would be hard to fix/replace. I am keen to ask Craig what the durability and cost of replacement of these are? From what I have seen the quality of the manufacturing is far better than the new replicas of Atomics that sell around $500 - $600. I can churn out multiple brews easily, (bloody hell people don't go immersing the unit in cold water, just let the steam out and unlock the base. And for the person complaining about coffee dripping after brew is finished, like Atomics you need a waste cup to slip under once you have pulled out the coffee catching saucer.)Similar opinion? A World Cup Trophy
I’ve always used a stove-top but I knew that this burned my coffee. Enter ‘The Little Guy’ and the Coffee Ritual! A wonderful piece of design and engineering. If you don’t love your coffee then this device is not for you.
If you’re prepared to concentrate and even to meditate on the experience then you’re going to take drinking coffee to a new level… your palate will improve and you’ll even start thinking about Fair Trade Agreements and where your coffee comes from.
It took me about 10 attempts to get the whole thing right but after that, ...Read more
I could make great coffee every time. And not just great coffee… the best coffee I’ve ever tasted! So, if you want to take your coffee experience to the next level, you have to have ‘The Little Guy’. Now, to make TLG work for you it’s important that you put the right amount of coffee (about 25gm) into the basket and that it is a fine commercial grind. Next, you probably have to double tamp it, that is, half fill the basket and tamp and then put some more coffee in and tamp again so the top of the coffee is about 5mm from the rim. I found The Little Guy Tamper pretty much indispensable for this purpose; you need it, as you do The Little Guy Induction plate. It’s not to say it won’t work without them but the fact is it was designed to work with them. The coffee grind, the coffee amount and density of the ‘tamp’ are all components of the whole design. The puck which is formed as the coffee extracts acts like a ‘valve’ which is elemental to the function of the device. If you don’t get it right, then you don’t get the perfect extraction and you don’t get the pressure to properly froth your milk. Extraction should start around the 8 minute ‘double beep’ on the induction plate. I’ve found about 10 seconds before works best for me and I also tend to replace the bowl just before there’s any gurgling from the dispersion plate. You don’t want to over-extract or it will introduce some bitterness. I just enjoy the whole experience of preparing my coffee and drinking it and then cleaning up The Little Guy; making it ready for the next time. It puts participation and engagement back into your coffee. All you have to do is follow the instructions. And rest assured, the post purchase follow up is excellent. A big thanks to the team at The Little Guy and to the staff at Jasper’s Caffeine Dealers.

Buyer beware
Great coffee for 10 weeks, then no steam. Emailed Little Guy, the response was implied that it was our fault. We received a really bullying email. We purchased the machine in good faith, big mistake. The cost of postage if you live outside of Sydney is expensive, it weighs 8kgs, and the Little Guy don't want to pay even when it's under warranty, Myer reluctantly paid. The machine is made in China. When you send the Little Guy back for a warranty repair our experience was they take no responsibility it's your fault. It's your word agains...Read more
t theirs. We did get a refund from Myer, even though Little Guy had advised that nothing was wrong after pressure testing the machine! Both my husband and I felt as though we were treated as though we were the problem. Not a reliable or consistent appliance, even with the induction heat pad.Similar opinion? Fails as a stovetop machine.
Bought the Little Guy as a stove top machine. I live on a boat and use gas. It is NOT a stove top machine and requires an expensive cooktop - thereby making it a complicated electric machine. The induction cooktop won't work on a generator - so only useful in a total domestic application. Its biggest selling point is now lost. It has plastic hoses (heat proof silicone) inside and gas stovetop use may cause these to fail. Rarely froths milk properly. Very limited application. Can't make repeat coffee if you have friends. Only makes two latte's -...Read more
not one. When it works OK, it is good - but unreliable and inconsistent in its results. I'm going back to my trusty Bellman Stovetop. Not the best coffee maker in the world - but probably the best stovetop for gas and no hidden plastic hoses.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Love it, but seems to get mixed results
The coffee tastes great, my office corridor is filled with coffee aroma. However, I would have given 4-5 stars if not for mixed results and got a few 'heart thumping' 'scares'. When I used room temperature water, it gave me a shock ie. just midway in the 3rd minute of extraction, it started pushing out so much steam and roaring away without pushing out a reasonable amount of crema. I switched it off and started letting out steam through the frother with my heart thumping! On other occasions, I used warm (not boiled water), and it seemed to give...Read more
me 3 minute of extraction with decent amount of crema. Today, it didn't give me much crema as steam started 'gushing' - er... scary. I usually wait till my induction cooktop beeps before I switched it off. I'm so scared that it would overheat and pushed out the steam like it did before. A minor setback is that no matter how hard I tried to remove the leftover water, there will always be some left, so I had to dry it with a paper towel.3 comments

to get some specialty coffee grounds, I tried mixing the ground thoroughly, ie. the finer ground into the mix. I was also over tamping so I lessened that to one-two presses. Result was that I'm now getting more crema through and more expresso! Brilliant, it was beyond comparison with what I got from the office cafe here (makes theirs like mud water!). After a clean of the frother nozzle with a paper clip tip, the frothing worked fairly well. Just exhilarating to get good results!!! Got my cuppuccino today! All who are struggling with frothing milk, perservere on, this machine is smarter than you think! I just saved myself about a hundred bucks since Jan 2017 and enjoyed every sip without having to tell someone 'please get it better next time!'!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Beautiful, but try frothing milk, and you will soon give up.
The coffee tastes very good.
It is a bit fiddly to use, yet easy to clean.
The continual dripping of the coffee after brewing is messy. We just put a kitchen towel underneath to soak it up, because when we used a cup/holder, it spoilt the beautiful smell of freshly brewed coffee by burning the little bit of coffee drips, which does not smell good.
I have tried and tried to froth milk, even though I can froth milk with a cafe grade machine, I gave up with the Little Guy. It simply does not have enough pressure to swirl the milk into a thick f...Read more

WOW I love the little guy
It is fantastic - no more trips to cafes - It can make it just as well as any cafe - well worth the money - I have already saved the price of the machine & induction pad in 4 months
The only minor problem is opening the port to put water in it is a bit fiddly - I have put on a mark to align the coffee handle thing with the base

Buy it
Wow, this machine really does make absolutely beautiful tasting coffee. I found it took a few trial runs at first, to tweak it to my liking. Of course, there is no doubt, this is a gorgeous looking object and another plus, it is so easy to keep clean, compared to my previous machines. The build quality appears to be of high standard so hopefully a long lasting product. Definitely recommended.

A "Little Beauty" for real coffee
Beautiful design and show piece. Visitors are always in awe. Took a while to get the hang of using it but once mastered, the process although time consuming is a joy. Really informative web site and instruction book. When I had a small problem customer support was outstanding, taking the time to explain options to remedy the problem and extremely polite at the same time. Far superior to all those bulky machines and capsule units on the market, The induction unit is well worth the outlay and great to cook on as well. Very portable.

It's not for everyone but will be a lifelong love of many
It took some time to get the hang of this machine but now I can consistently make a great coffee, better than most cafes. I love how it looks, it is a piece of functional art that lives on our stove top. I love how compact it is. I have had to learn quite a lot about coffee making, it definitely demands your attention, it is not for those who prefer lcd screens and buttons and set-and-forget approaches to coffee. But I have found it immensely rewarding, and I love actually making my coffee, not asking a machine to do it for me. The main dr...Read more
awback is how long it takes from start to finish, especially if you hand grind coffee each time you use it. But I have got into the habit of getting it ready when I have time, then I just have to flick on the stove. Once you know how long it takes, you can get on with a chore and come back. The other main drawback is that it makes two tiny coffees, or really, just one for me. It is pretty useless if you have three or four people waiting for a coffee. I know they say you can plunge the whole thing in cold water and keep going, but that feels like a coping strategy rather than a design feature. Anyway, I use mine about 7 times a week for just me, and I love it. Another great thing about it - it really does feel like it will last a lifetime, which in a kitchen full of flimsy planned-obselence crap appliances, feels good.Similar opinion? Best coffee I've ever had
This makes better coffee than any I've bought in the store. Very simple to use and clean. Only thing to keep in mind is the preparation, process and cleaning time. You'll want to see aside 20 minutes if you're grinding beans on top of that. I love the whole process however and the result is well worth the effort. I use it almost daily and along with the induction tip it is so simple to use.

Little Guy Repeat Buy
I'm just about to buy my second one. No, nothing wrong with the first one, but that lives on our boat for perfect weekend coffees. After 6 months of weekend perfection, we now need one for home for our daily shots. Our regular "run of the mill" commercially available machine makes good coffee but it just does not measure up to the rich sweetness of the Little Guy extraction.
A great machine, looks great and well worth the money.

This is the coffee machine
I bought The Little Guy after thoroughly researching machines and 2 years later I still say its the BEST purchase I've ever made. Making coffee is an art-form, not a push button job, and you will love the ritual that comes with the Little Guy (and think about what those coffee capsules are doing to our landfill). I also want to buy the coffee I want, not be forced to drink the manufacturer's coffee.
This machine is so responsive to the way you use it, looks damn fine on your kitchen counter, wont break like those other machines with heaps of ...Read more

Best coffee maker ever
I've used the little guy every day since purchasing 4 years ago. it makes excellent coffee & is exceptional quality (It is built to last for years to come) I would highly recommend it to anyone. Great product, and definately worth the price. Have owned a more convential domestic machine around the same price point that fell to bits after a few years.
Also great for taking camping so you can have a proper flat white in the mornings!

This Little Guy is just faultless
The Little Guy home barista kit is just everything you need. Our Little Guy has been turning out coffees for over a year, perfect one day and better the next! Clean him up in about three minutes.
No moving parts.
He comes camping with us and warms up on a camping stove and if we are on 240 volt power the induction is there.
If all things were made to the standard of manufacture and performance as the Little Guy we would all be much happier.

This little guy has made over 2000 cups since we bought him. However the induction plate has gone by the wayside, it failed once and was repaired and has failed a second time and we use the little guy on the gas stove

A brilliant machine with both substance and style
I wish more products were like this - it makes a brilliant coffee and is beautifully made. The customer service is superb in answering questions, and there's a loyal community out there providing tips on how to best use it.
I'd describe the flavour of coffee as, say 80% espresso / 20% stovetop. I like the slight difference from coffee shop espresso and can honestly say I'd often rather make my coffee at home than go out.
In terms of value it'll beat any other home espresso machine at the price and then some. Factor in that it'll still be...Read more
around years after those other machines are gone (or have gone through many expensive repairs) and the value looks even better. Definitely get it with the induction top, it takes out a lot of the guesswork and the auto shutoff is also a great feature to prevent boiling dry if you get distracted. I use it with a Breville Smartgrinder - it's worth investing in a decent grinder to accompany TLG. They do demos of this machine (at least around the eastern states) which is what ultimately convinced me after much procrastination, so if you're unsure you can also keep an eye out for those via their facebook page.Similar opinion? Still crazy, after all these years
I have had my Otto for 3 years - and it's still as crazy as it was on day one. I, however, am now expert at making perfect coffee. If you get a grind that is fractionally too coarse - you will lose your perfect coffee unless you correct with tamping. Don't leave the basket in the group handle too long or it will stick and can only be removed by soaking in boiling soapy water - a few times. Tamp too heavily - you will have syrupy, nasty coffee. Not enough - watery coffee - no steam pressure.
So it's crazy - and it's the best domestic machine ...Read more
I've used. I love it. As most have said here - it takes time to master but once you have it - you have it for good. I started it on the gas and it was definitely not as effective (and kinda tarnished the stainless steel) as the induction pad.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Love my Little Guy !
It took me a while but I have finally mastered the Little Guy.How? Listening to Craig and his great support staff and using finely ground coffee purchased from my local coffee shop (Turkish Grade thanks to the guys at The Purple Moose in Alexandria). This machine not only makes great tasting coffee, it looks terrific.

Hard to beat
I've made about 8500 coffees on mine (bought as an Otto).
I use it religiously- at least twice a day and it has asked me to learn a lot about coffee.
I now only drink short blacks, and generally use beans roasted lightly for filter brews.
Try it. Yum!
Once over cooked the machine (a couple of hours over gas) and had it fixed within a few hours of calling Craig and Doug.

Great long black
I like my early morning long black. Once the coffee has been made I pour about 150ml of water in a small milk jug from an earlier coffee machine I used to own. I use the steaming arm to boll the water and add it to the coffee. This makes a good long black as I have had anywhere

Hey to all TLG owners out there! Anyone know how to pull TLG apart completely? Specifically the group head with the internal silicon pipe attached to it. I think mine has just blown the internal silicon pipes apart - big steam explosion just as I was about to steam some milk and all the pressure dropped out!! I'm in NZ and I dont think there is a repairer here so if I can get it apart I'll replace the pipes myself...........Cheers Carl

Hey guys. I have a milk tip, and a question.
Tip- when texturing milk, only introduce air into the milk while it's cold. Once the milk is warm, introducing air will only ruin the texture. Also the milk jug will squeal for two reasons - not enough air in the milk, or not enough steam pressure.
Question- I struggle to get enough pressure to do a small jug of milk. My extraction is fine, I fill to the bottom edge, have the flame on reasonably high, and wait until the extraction is nearly complete to start on the milk. What am I doing wrong??
1 answer
Does extraction start before the 8 min mark? Is yes, try a finer grind size until extraction starts on the 8 min mark. Or try using the other basket insert with the small number of holes. That will help with getting the right pressure for texturing.
Sebastian B.asked
Hey team. A question, and a comment..
The comment is.. as a barista in a former life I have some milk tips..
-only texture (when the steam tip is near the surface) when the milk is cold. Once it's staring to warm, just spin the milk to the desired temperature. Introducing air into warm milk will split it. Also, the milk jug will squeal if there's not enough air in the milk, or if there is insufficient steam pressure.
Question- I'm struggling to get anough steam pressure to texture a small jug of milk. I'm filling the water right up to the bottom edge and my coffee is extracting fine. I wait until the extraction is nearly done to start texturing.

Did a bit more tamping and used half cold/half boiled water. Seemed to get better crema coming through. Although it seemed that after the beep and power is off, there is still more extraction that could come through (per my question)...
