Super all-round suv. Tows heavy van superbly.
130k done, 3 laps of Oz and plenty of other trips, on road, off road, often towing 22ft van. Not missed a beat and very comfortable. Built to last and the diesel is super...ignore the rattle when cold...cruises beautifully. Top buy. This is the model to buy if you are after a good second-hand Prado. Was going to trade on the new2.8L diesel but reviews have put me off, particularly towing aspects. So I'll keep this one for another 100k.

What a 4 wheel drive
What an awesome all round suv. Have 214000k's on it now with no major problems. Parts have come down big time from Toyota, service my self every 10000. Cheap to service and run. Aircon ice cold. I need to put a lift kit in it as the tank sits a bit low. Awesome on the sand went around a Pajero bogged in the sand without any wheel spin. Wouldn't buy the current model prado as everyone I know that owns one said they should have kept this model.

'05 VX V6 Prado - Everything I hoped it would be
Only had it for a month, but I'm initially very impressed all-round by this great 4x4 from Toyota. The 120 series (V6 & diesel) have a great build reputation which pulled me from the Pajero or even Territory, and the VX adds a few luxury items without going overboard.
Sure its gonna chew more fuel than I would like for daily drives (averaging 15.8L/100 around town so far), but thats expected from such a big car.
The beige interior is growing on me, I was worried at first, but it keeps clean like any other colour really
I'll update more later once I've got more running costs and kms under the belt.

Prado Grade not going back
I purchased my 2006 Prado in 2007 brand new with only 3klm on the dial, now nearly 10 years later and 116,000 klm and still going strong would not be without it.
Purchased it after we borrowed my husband's bosses car in 2006 to take a delivery to Goulburn from Sydney, and I fell in love with it so I just had to have one, perfect on fuel!! A very reliable, and serviceable vehicle.
I found the running and serviceability very good, I drive this 4X4 to Harvey Bay on the sunshine coast every year, towing trailers, you forget that it is connec...Read more
ted to the vehicle. It has transported all my big purchases. A very comfortable vehicle to drive. Very economic on all trips, especially long distances. The only thing I've done is buy new tyres and the every 10,000 klm services. A full tank gets you from Sydney to Harvey Bay in Queensland 1,600klm with still enough fuel to drive around for another week whilst there. I would recommend this 4X4 to everyone, and I have. Excellent 4X4 wouldn't be without it now, and wouldn't drive anything else. Thank you, for allowing my review.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

My Wife Borrowed my Prado ..and won't give it back !
Bought this ex QLD miner with the BHP internal roll bars from Orix Melb, complete with bull bar, tow pack and 100K on the dial.. At the time my wife said this will be your car so I replaced the wheels with alloys and Yokohamas. Loaded it with mountain bikes, scouts and hauled all manner of camping gear, rubbish and stuff. Few problems apart from replacing the fuel sender units in both tanks when we couldn't read the fuel gauge. Completely destroyed a black Barina when I reversed over it one night when the street light was out. Insurance covered...Read more
the Barina. No mark on the Prado. This must have impressed the trouble and strife because she asked to drive it on the school commute and hasn't given it back. Lately I have been sitting in the back seats and they are not quite as comfortable as I remember them. 220k and still going strong. Can't see me ever getting rid of this one. Best car I've owned
Bought a 2002 Prado in 2007, had 77,000 Km on it, now done 245,000 Km, I have towed caravans, car trailers with cars on them, it handles it all without a problem. The comfort is excellent and I hope to still be driving it for a long time. Like the old saying "When you're on a good thing, stick to it."

Toyota Prado MY2005
My 05 Prado GXL petrol is so reliable that it becomes boring. After 56,000km (yes I drive little) nothing happened, engine-wise, chassis wise. No rattle outside or inside, nothing comes loose, nothing broken, the wiper rubber still work perfectly, no streaking noise. Apart from the regular service, and recently the grinding of the rotors and wheel alignment, it is hardly a repair worth to mention. In summary, the best car I have owned in terms of reliability. My 1994 Falcon ED was the worst then the Mazda 929 MY 1990 among my 22 cars owned and drove in 30 years.
Superbly built, top rate in reliability, versatile and great off road capability
Rear gate is heavy with spare wheel, bad when open on camber.
Purchased in May 2021.

Glow Plug Problem KZ TE diesel engine
Nowhere in the service manual does it say to replace the gloe plugs. At 179,000km five milimetres of number four glow plug broke off and enbedded in the top of the piston. Everytime the piston came up the end of the plug hit the cylinder head. This sounded like an old fashion "big end knock." On pulling the engine completely apart, the broken plug was found.New piston, all new rings, bearings & gaskets & $8,123 later. Change glow plugs every 100,000km.Bob Davey.0432389139

Prado VX D4-D
Nicely spec'ed vehicle that is a joy to drive. Price is a bit on the high side and the wait for a D4D from time the order is placed till it arrives is a bit excessive at the moment. Prado was purchased new and now done 310000 kms, it has never let us down.
Excellent engine in the D4D diesel. Brilliant fuel economy, large fuel tank capacity allows for extended touring. Quality finish on paintwork and interior leather. there are just too many great aspects of this car.
It has some failings, the headlights are woefully inadequate and should be upg...Read more

Everything you could want for a 4WD/Daily Driver mix
I don't post reviews until I have owned the product for at least 12 months - that way it is a fair and accurate assessment that will help others deciding.
I bought a 2005 V6 VX 16 months ago with about 170000 on the clock. Mechanic gave me a big thumbs-up on the pre purchase examination and I haven't looked back from there. This is a great vehicle that spend 95% of its life on the roads and the rest 4wding. I have gone out with others in 4wd groups and there is nowwhere that this Prado can't go. So many aftermarket accessories and mods you...Read more

fit for purpose..so far love it!!
Got a 2009 kakadu diesel (2 weeks ago) - first impressions - not a sports car (knew that)...luxury features, bit slow/ cumbersome off the mark in suburban traffic but once up and running fine.. cruising excellent, view of road excellent, feels solid and safe esp in poor conditions..comfort, room and fuel economy/ range excellent.Plans are touring and some off-road combined with comfort ...couldn't afford/ justify price new..but second hand price, with anticipated RELIABILITY

no competition!!
I bought my 2004 GXL Prado when it was 3 years old with 70 000ks on the clock. I absolutely love my car and honestly cannot fault it. I clock up a lot of kms every month and until recently (a minor event...broken fan belt) it has never let me down. I have towed a fully laden camper trailer to all corners of the country: long highways, rugged terrain etc etc ... absolutely no problems. The clock now reads 311 000kms and the car drives as beautifully as ever! It is easy to drive, so smooth on the road, no road noise and super comfortable.
When and if I can bear to part with it (and it would have to be a good reason!) I will look no further than another Prado.
super reliable, tough but smooth and comfy
nothing!!!!

Great car very reliable,well built,
I have owned this car for 10 years,no problems, very well built, capable off road, lots of room, petrol version is a bit thirsty 13-16 litres per 100klm and front brakes wear quick in city driving and brake shudder has been a problem but overall has been a great car, can't really complain, would recommend this car to a large family.
Lots of room, rear seats come out easily, easy to park for a large 4x4, reliable!!
Petrol a bit thirsty, expensive to buy you get what you pay for....

Buyer Beware
I have a 2005 model with 140000 kms on it and I loved it until I have discovered that the rear door is now faulty. The welding on the inner door near the hinges has started to split . cannot claim on insurance and am still waiting to here if Toyota will replace. Be sure and check the rear doors when purchasing a pardo

This problem was mainly a result of Toyota dealerships not following the procedures for one particular service where they were required to check the valve clearances. On the D4D engine the service ad... Read more
vice was to remove the injectors, check the clearances and adjust and then reassemble with new seals on the injectors. Many dealerships worked out that they could check the clearances without removing the injectors not realising that the Toyota engineers wanted the injector seals replaced at that service interval. If your vehicle was serviced correctly and you paid for the seals as part of the service your claim is with Toyota Australia. If they did not replace the seals your claim is with the dealership. Hope this helps.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Toyota problems
I own 2 Toyotas, a 2005 Hilux SR5 and a 2007 Prado VX, I purchased both vehicles new, and both of them are log book serviced. Both of them have the D4D 3 l diesel, type 1 KD-FTV.
At 103 000km the hilux engine had a total engine failure, the cars warranty has expired, but I took it to Toyota Wynnum for assessment anyway. After 2 weeks a got the car back with a rebuild engine, free of charge!! At this stage I was very pleased with Toyota, but my queston what was wrong with the engine was never answered. It was simply stated that I have a new eng...Read more

Thimply the Besth
I went from 4 B M W 's (the last being the E61 530d) to the Prado. It is smoother, less road noise, better gear changing on the auto, just simply amazing. Just wish that I could afford a newer one. Fuel economy is just as good as any other car as long as you drive it in a sensible fashion.
Everything
no WOW factor on interior, but hey its not bad at all

My favourite car ever!
I have the 3.4 GXL 2002 model. I reckon it is a fantastic car - great size, can go anywhere and doesn't cost the earth in fuel. Having 8 seats is really handy. Really reliable and everything seems to be over-engineered so it lasts. Is great off road - I have towed a fully laiden camper trailer on soft sand and it goes off like a zirtec! Love the long range fuel tanks. Air conditioning is excellent.
reliability, quality
interior is a bit dated

Confidence + Luxury = Prado
Very nice car. Ideal for family, short or long trips, bushes, what not.... Mine is 2004 Grande model, Love it. easy to handle. good on fuel for such a big car. Have not had any problems yet. I would never want to go and buy anything else but Toyota, have been using their cars for a while and totally satisfied.

smoothness sealed the deal. I think I would still buy another v6, even now with the morepowerfull D4D diesel out in the prado now, the V6 is pretty good on fuel and I dont tow very often and the V6 is more reliable engine,no exspensive injectors to replace or common rail parts to replace. I love my toyotas aswell,I owned different makes and owned 5 toyotas and the toyotas are the best by far,the kluger I got now is fantastic, but loved the prado the best.Similar opinion? This is a common know occurance when people let the back door - which is heavey - just swing free until it stops at the hinge maximum travel. This is not a Toyota fault but a user-induced fault.
