Very Good
I'm the third owner of my 2001 RAV4 5 door manual. It has been a very good vehicle. I principally bought it because it enabled me to have a vehicle that didn't require me to duck my head or bend my back to get in or out. It made a huge difference to my bad back, not being constantly aggravated by such a frequent activity. I've been generally very happy with the car. Using Cooper Discoverer tyres has greatly improved road holding in all conditions. The odd emergency brake can be exciting with lock up of left front going first. Toyota dea...Read more
ler not interested in checking. I would consider the car excellent if not for this. An ABS equipped model would probably be perfect. I have noticed that Toyota dealers are not really interested in servicing older model vehicles. One tends to be given the flick in response to out of the ordinary problems, in Canberra anyway. Only other gripe was water entry during a creek crossing, but subsequently found loose inspection port and reattached with sealant. Again the Toyota service people were unhelpful. Otherwise the RAV has performed extremely well in a wide variety of road conditions and surfaces, having been on extended trips around NSW and QLD outback. The flexibility of the rear seating has meant many different loads can be accommodated, and seating five adults around town is considered bearable, but would be a little tight for longer journeys. The tail gate swings wide for direct and easy access to a low, flat load space, and plenty of shopping bag hooks and load anchorages are provided. Off road the vehicle is a reasonable climber, but the Discoverers are not optimised for this. Good in deep potholes. The inclusion of a dual range would make this vehicle an excellent off road 4X4. A mystery why Toyota never did this. Good visibility all around. Reliable. Good all round road holding and all wheel drive stability. Very good performance available on premium fuel. Assymetric brake lock in emergency situations. Can be a bit thirsty if not driven smoothly.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Reliable little family car
I've had a 2003 RAV4 auto since new bought at a dealer and in 9 years had no trouble. I've heard rumours about transmission but had no problems. It's true it's a little heavy on the petrol for a 2 litre - it's under 8 km per litre now and was between 8 and 10 km per litre new. This is presumably because of the 4WD.
It's not a sports car but it's certainly adequate performance around town. The safety features are all there and it's incredibly easy to park. Viewing angles from the wing mirrors are perfect and with electronic control of both mi...Read more
rrors you can view the kerb if you want to! The ride height is great for viewing the road and for going over bumps. The removable seats mean you can take quite bulky objects occasionally if you need to. It is a little squashed if you want to fit 3 adults in the back, or two child seats and one adult. Our sun roof is now a little rusty around the edges now as well, after 9 years. Do not try to padlock the rear wheel cover, by the way, it doesn't work. Just use lock nuts on the spare instead. Great ride height, reliable, easy to drive and park, versatile. Just a little squashed on the back seat for 3 adults.1 comment

We purchased ours after trading our 01 rav 4 edge. Full of options with a car like driving position and completly different to previous shape. Lovely quiet ride solid build and reliability. The 2.4vvti is excellent on fuel and robust enough for 4 people and luggage. Heaps of space and very comfortable on long drives.
Typical reliable solid built Toyota.
Bridgestone Tyres are fast wearers, Put a set of Kumho Tyres on it and problem fixed.

Transmission FAIL
I own an automatic rav4 2002 model & at first it was an absolute dream to drive. Right up until the car's transmission failed. After googling the symptoms (i.e. jerks, slow to accelerate etc) I found a plethora of complaints & realised I wasn't alone. "ECM/ transmission failure" cost me $1100 to replace at toyota after initially paying $700 to fix oxygen sensors caused by the ECM/ computer sending the wrong signals. And i'm "lucky" not to have forked out $3-4k to rebuild it as some have unfortunately had to do. The financial pressure & stress t...Read more

making loud noises. I was afraid to drive it. I have done a lot of research and it seems this is a common problem with the 2001 - 2003 Rav4's, they have a defective ECM. I am taking my car to the transmission place tomorrow and for a new ECM and some repairs is going to cost $1750, if the transmission is stuffed, it is going to cost a lot more!! This is a serious Safety issue!!!! I have called Toyota and I am going to take this further! If Toyota know about this problem they should cover the costs!! They should have recalled them. The transmission place where I am taking my car, said he has had this problem with a lot of these cars. There was a court action won for this problem with the 2001-2003 Rav4's in the USA, It appears we have the same problem here in Australia. If anyone else in Australia or New Zealand has had the same problem, please contact me, as I am going to be taking this further, the more people on board the louder my voice. Email address is [email protected]. Thank you from one very angry Toyota owner.Hi Holly,

Toyota has a good reputation for quality and safety of there cars. On the contrary, they should actually reflect this in there cars and the post-purchase service of their cars. Failure to do this, they will see the decline in customers' satisfaction and thus decline in sales. Safety should be their priority, they have the money and resources to improve the functions and running of their car, and should focus on long term, not just investing in marketing their products to drive up sales in the short term.

Toyota will wait till you complain about about fault before something is done. They do not want to acknowledge this problem to the public even when your car is serviced (Will not acknowledge you may have a potential problem). The ECU cost approx $1800 to replace and this may not be the only problem you may have. The transmission may need repair usually in the vicinity of $2500 to $5000 in relation to the amount of damage caused by faulty ECU. If you are lucky they replace the ECU as a repair but will give no guarantee warranty that this repair ...Read more
will not still destroy your transmission. ****NOTE**** These cars have been recalled in USA in 2006 and a later model ECU installed as free service. As here in Australia it is voluntary that Toyota can decide whether they recall these cars and no Goverment body to enforce this safety problem Toyota Australia are getting away with avoiding their responsibilies and liabilities as car manufactures to the public. When will Toyota realise this problem? does it have to go as far someone being killed, by being negligent in the concern. I now rate TOYOTA at 0 and certainly our family will not purchase any more cars from them. Whe have been treated as if we are stupid by their representatives, even state managers that are more worried how you got there contact, rather than addressing the problem. Even registered mail that you know is recieved is unanswered. We have contacted Toyota Customer Service again treated as stupid, reply "Is there realy a problem with RAV4 transmissions" Are we, or is it Toyota Australia that is stupid for they have knowledge of this 3 years ago. Toyota's reputation with RAV4 owners to say the least totally "SUCKS" If you think this is bullshit what I am saying, do some research and you will see this is true. I plead to any internet host to respond and make available space for a register of RAV4 owners with transmission problems. Only as a united body with numbers can we stand up to Toyota Australia. THANK YOU Toyota, denies most RAV4 have Transmission problems. The ECU (transmission computer) does not detect(diagnose)problems hence reports no error codes due to its faulty original design which can destroy transmissions. Toyota know of this problem and are completely in denial that this exists and that this is even a safety issue. You only have to look on the internet at how many people have similar problems and their experiences. Please complain for ours has now become that unsafe to drive. I've never heard of a car that runs perfectly and I really can't knock anything else about my lil 2001 Rav4 other than its motor. I knew it would have size issues when I bought because I knew I was buying a smaller version SUV. I've been in a few small car park hits and my car has always come up looking much better than the fool who has backed into me! The bumper and nudge bar at the front are well worth their money! :) My only problem would be with the (I think) motor. I have an auto and even after a full Toyota service it still sounds horrid!...Read more
However, this is my first auto so... maybe all autos just sound horrible :/ Always get compliments on size, colour and overall how cute it is. Sound of my auto engine - even after Toyota have done a full service.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

CV SPORT - Great car - not a single problem in 6.5 years
I bought the RAV4 CV SPORT brand new in 2005. We have never have a single problem. Lovely and zippy car to drive, and it handles the road very well. Easy to drive and park with great visibility.
My work requires me to travel inter-state often and I have hired many different rental cars . I must say RAV4 is the best car I have driven with the exception of the new Hybrid Camry (I was amazed how little petrol the hybrid car required). I still prefer the height the RAV4 provides with good driving visibility.
I think the CV Sport is a good looking small SUV, with the scoop on the bonnet. It looks like you could race in this thing.
The air con works exceptionally well, hot and cool come on very quickly.
Reliable, easy to drive

Be very careful of 2000 - 2003 models with auto transmission, can have serious problems.
First and last Toyota. After I find out Toyota knew about the transmission problems with this car I totally regret buying it. SHAME on you TOYOTA for not recalling and fixing the problems you knew were there.

Heavy on the fuel
Not a bad vehicle, but poor fuel consumption, 2.0 litre model labours under acceleration. Standard fitting Bridgestone Tyres very noisy. Steering direct. Dealer not very helpful when I had a claim under warranty, had a broken seatbelt and they expected me to take it away and bring it back later in the week
Easy to drive, steering direct and high driving position, very comfortable
Be very wary of the auto transmissions when they get to about 130,000 kms, they are know to fail and are expensive to repair

Look, before the auto transmission went in our Rav, costing us $4000 and 20 days without a car, I would have said, absolutely, go and buy this brilliant brilliant car. I found its fuel economy great, but I pay attention to the way I drive and had great mileage.
But since the auto transmission went, I just don't feel right in recommending the car now. Toyota has lost us as a future buyer of their cars, along with people who have heard of our experience with Toyota's lack of responsibility in attending to an incredibly serious issue such a...Read more
s the transmission. I mean, our car was literally CRAWLING along the road, inch by inch, to the mechanic. What if our car had was going over a train track! Or at an intersection! Toyota knows of the problem indeed, and I am appalled by my experience with them. AND SO ARE MANY OTHERS! Great road handling on bitumen and gravel. So easy to drive, park, and great to be up high without needing a stepladder to get into it. HOWEVER, whilst I have LOVED my RAV 4 since we bought it brand new in 2001, and looked after it according to the service books, we had the TRANSMISSION problem that has been noted in MANY other posts, both here in Australia and overseas. Yes, Toyota is most definitely aware of this problem, but keep banging on that it 'isn't a problem'! Yet, when you tell them about the ECU being the problem as identified by the auto transmission specialists, Toyota then says "yes, we know of the problem"!!!!!!!! They said to have the car sent straight to a Toyota dealer so they could assess the problem and see if we could get the transmission reimbursed under their national warranty. HOWEVER, I said I couldn't get it to the dealer as my car only just crawled to our mechanic. TOyota therefore would not give any reimbursement based on the auto transmission guy's assessment! What a crock!1 comment
Toyota should help you with the cost of repairs because this fault is common and is a design weakness/fault. Maybe the owner can pay for materials and Toyota pays for labour.

I love being up high in a 4WD, you can see for miles and it is so easy to drive.
Great sized car, easy to drive, easy to park, the seat goes forward far enough for my short legs!
I've not had any transmission problems like others here, I bought second hand 2 years ago and has been brilliant. When we had babies car seat in reverse (for a new born) there was hardly any space for the person in the front seat as the seat had to be so far forward, but it is fine now the car seat is forward facing. My husband complains that it's too small, but it's not for me!

I own a 2006 Cruiser L (Manual), This car replaces my 1992 V6 Commodore Wagon. Average fuel consumption is about 10L/100k. A massive improvement on my Commodore at about 14L/100k. I would definately buy another.
Drives like a car, nice gear box, cheap insurance, perfect family sized car.
Fuel consumption doesn't improve with Premium fuels. You can only lock the 4WD system at 40kms or below.

Not the best Rav4 but still a wonderful car to drive and get around. An excellent car for general driving but lack power uphill and the 4x4 still lags. Pre 2000 models are more stable, more power and fun to drive.
Easy to park and drive. Very reliable compact SUV. Good leg rooms. Back passenger seats can be removed completely for extra space if needed.
Lack power uphill. Not the best compact SUV on petrol.

Bad
This vehicle has driven about 40,000 km. About 75% in the city, where its quite good as a run about. Several country trips including unsealed roads both wet and dry.
Build quality is not up to usual Toyota standard, sunroof leaks, dash board rattles, lots of road noise.
The on demand 4WD system is simply there for the marketing hype - doesn't work on time. Putting a sub standard 4WD system on these vehicles simply to capture the biggest growing sector is dangerous - gives drivers a false sense of security.
Good around town, easy to steer and park, good visibility, good cargo area.
Terrible on the open road, bobs around, rattles, noisy, underpowered, stupid 4WD system.

Hi there..im planning to buy a rav4 2004 cv automatic but some people are saying the car is really good and some are saying these cars have a transmission issue..im confused would someone please guide me if i should buy or no ?
1 answer
Hi Nomi, The 2004 Rav 4 didn't have any more issues with the transmission then any other model. Generally, the auto's are really good. A test drive of the car will soon show you if it has any problems. Maybe take someone with you that has a bit of mechanical ability, when you look at it, so that they can put the transmission through it's paces. If it slips, noisy or even hangs on during a gear change, then you've got problems, otherwise grab it and enjoy the ride!
