Good Overall but
Bought the brabd new comfortline version in 2016. It drives like a dream and fuel economic as we'd like it to be. The Automatic resting mode is quite irritating as we don't really need it but this little golf has more space than we thought as we managed to carry 2.4 metre length of timber in the car so it is quite big for its size

Golf Gti
I love my Golf GTi. It's my pocket rocket and hard to keep the men folk of the family out of it. Zippy fast smooth efficient comfortable and looks hot. servicing is reasonable and is on a par with most car brands. I am so in love with this car and I know I'll have it for quite some time.

Economic in petrol but struggles even with a turbo engine
The car is slow to accelerate (dealer did advise about this) but I did expect more given the engine. It is on the economical side for fuel saving money in the long run. There is limited leg room for the back seats but given this is a hatchback it is expected. So far has been running well without any issues

For one of the safest cars around, it has a massive blindspot!
We purchased this car brand new and it is my first car to have from new, so I am happy somewhat with my Golf! It is a pleasure to drive and with the twin turbo is a very handy car. But the only thing I find hard to understand, is that for one of the safest known cars around this car has an awfully big blindspot when I am driving. I have nearly caused a few accidents from thinking I was clear to change lanes, only to find out there is a car beside me!! So now I make sure I check the mirrors but also check over my shoulder to make sure there is n...Read more
othing beside me. I know this may not be an issue with all drivers but it is for me. The fuel economy from the diesel engine is amazing, it is so much cheaper to run than my previous petrol engine car, so that is a huge plus. Also the power of this car is awesome, you know you are always safe out on the open roads to pass long trucks etc. Overall, I love my VW Golf, but I just have that issue of safety with the blindspots.Similar opinion? Great, zippy car.!
This car is fantastic for the price . 7 speed dsg gearbox is a delight . Considering it only has 92kw from its 1.4 l turbo it feels like 120kw due to the smooth transition from gears . Interior is ok, but packed with electronics rear parking sensors lane assist and optional parallel park assist. Fuel consumption is average 8litres / 100km which is pretty good . Interior cabin is quite large for a hatchback . Leg room is quite roomy than most small cars . Great reliability and I would certainly buy a VW Golf again in future. Highly recommend.!!

Not the best
It looks prettier then other options in similar price range but when you are a passenger at the back you do get dizzy, and naseous. The person we bought it from even advised that it is complicated and difficult to drive and warned my father that I had to get some soft of special license before I drove it.

A leader in its class
I had always wanted a Golf, and finally got an opportunity to buy one.
I looked at all of the similar cars currently in the market, and none of them compared to the fit, finish and feel of the Golf. The design outside is understated and a little aggressive. The interior is simple and classy. The build quality is very solid and feels of a high quality- not plasticky like the Corolla, Kia or Hyundai. Driving it is a pleasure. It is zippy and enjoyable to drive. Love the automatic headlights, windscreen wipers and dimmable rear-view mirror.

The best ride!
Love love love this car! I previously had the Polo but I am so glad I upgraded to this model. The interior feels expensive, unlike a lot of the other cars that are a similar size from other brands. It's a very comfortable ride with power when required. I plan to have this car as my forever car.

Great Car.
I have had this car for 2 years now and have not had any major issues with it. Runs smooth and handles what you would expect in a golf. Fuel economy is also great & for a small car has reasonable leg space in the back. Only downfall is maybe too small a boot but that is expected. 9.10.

Perfect for high mileage highway driving
I love my Golf. I bought a manual due to ongoing concerns with the DSG. I couldn't be happier. Superb fuel economy where I always get more than 900kms per tank. Great refinement and ride comfort. Ive had 36,000 trouble free kilometers in 20 months. The only minor issues were rectified at the last service where the infotainment screen would remain completely off when the car was running. A computer reboot fixed the problem. I love the luxury touches that other cars in this class don't have when comparing base models, namely flock lined door bins...Read more
and the glovebox, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, and the cloth covered central arm rest. It just makes it a nicer place to be. I will definitely consider another Golf but only a manual.1 comment

I wasn't planning on buying a Volkswagen but was open to it, I was actually leaning more towards either Mazda or Toyota but out of those only the Corolla suited our budget and needs but we got abysmal service at the Toyota dealership so went across the road to see the VWs.
We test drove the Polo because it was so much cheaper and it drove so well but the boot was just a touch too small for our stroller so we ended up getting offered an excellent deal on the Golf. We bought from these guys because they treated us like human beings instead of sa...Read more

Gearbox issues
Our VW golf is 4 years old and although we have had it service yearly at a VW dealership, we have always had another issue every year. Most problems have been rectified by 'computer upgrades' which I don't understand why it needs to be done again after a regular service.
We have had a issue with the gearbox and although initially told it was out of the 3 year warranty, in the end they replaced it for free. This would've caused us a few grand out of pocket. They replaced it because they acknowledge there are many issues with the gearbox in the cars that weren't even on the recall list.
Our mechanic told us to sell the car now that it has a new gearbox and is problem free for now.

92TSI Manual
Very impressed. Grunty engine that makes power down really low. ( I stall the corolla after driving the Golf).
Good quality interior, handles great, amazing fuel economy. Don't let the premium fuel worry you. We run the 94 octane from BP and it is the same price as 91 most of the time. Average less than 5l phk.
We have the base model and couldn't be happier.

Good fun car, if you can handle the bugs...
The mechanics are reliable, however the electrics are another thing... Radar needs re-calibration, safety settings turn off by themselves, entertainment system locks and the 'Modes' also freezes. The radar will sometimes detect something that isn't there and locks up the brakes, not great at higher speed and with vehicles close behind. When it works it works well. Great on fuel, quiet, comfortable. When it comes to the electrics, don't expect anything from the dealers, they just point you to VW service line...

infotainment issues
Since buying this 2017 GTI, I have had problems getting the infotainment system to start up during initial drive of the day. VW has had the car twice and still no fix. This is wasting a lot of my time. Sometimes takes as much as 20 minutes to turn on. Average time is a few minutes. During this initial startup there is no use of the back up camera of anything else related to the stereo/infotainment system. Very disappointed.

This is a follow up to my initial post. I have had the issue resolved by VW. I am not happy that it took so many visits to fix, but it seems to have been cleared up. I will follow up if there are more issues.

Engine noise
Bought new in late 2015 . After 18000 kms engine had a squealing noise from the engine on and off which sounded like the AC belt and started to increase. Agent diagnosed as clutch issue to be replaced by a superseded clutch. Clutch replaced.
Did not expect a major repair from a new car such as the Golf with good reviews!

VW Golf 92TSI Comfortline (MY2017) with Driver Assistance Package option,....a mixed bag.
This is my first Golf, and will be used primarily for Uber. Delivery 2/2/2017 Cost about $31000 including DAP option.
Eary days but very impressed. Smooth, quiet, tons of power because of the turbocharger, and extremely electronically sophisticated.
Best points:
Smooth, ultra-quiet sound proofing, high quality interior. Lots of gadgets, audio system including 2 SD card slots, satnav, Hill holder dedicated button.
Great visibility and ergonomically a ten out of ten.
VW have all but removed the jerkiness on older models when taking off from standstill. The DSG gear changes are superb.
The Auto park brake means I will never roll backwards or forwards when taking off, again....Read more
I now have 40gb of music stashed on one tiny SD card in the glovebox, the other being for satnav maps. The CD player, also in the glovebox will probably never be used. Update: June 2017. Have now done 6400 kms, nearly all for Uber, not a single problem to report. The radar on the front has saved me from a front end crash on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Have not been brave enough to even attempt the automatic parking feature. And i never use the utomatic stop-start engine feature, designed to save petrol, as it disturbs passengers when the engine suddenly starts when you want to move off from stationary. The eerie silence of this car when it is moving, still delights me. I am averaging 7.2 l / 100 kms, sometimes down to 6.8 ....sometimes up to 8. Doubtful points: The two instruction manuals that come with this vehicle are virtually unreadable, virtually a waste of time. Whoever signed off on these should be sacked. Even the indexes are incomplete, and if you try to look for logical sequences to complete a setup task, you won't find any, as all are obscured by mountains of warnings and caveats. Apple CarPlay is billed as a feture of the software on board, but, unlike its counterpart in the USA, the Australian version is crippled by a lack of apps that the VW hardware can use. It also is, at the moment, a waste of time, but hopefully will improve. Space saver spare tyre is simply not acceptable in the Australian market, where roads guarantee you will get a flat tyre at some point and it could be a long way from a garage to fix that tyre. Colour range is unexciting, drab, and cheerless, and expensive, unless you like plain white, which i chose, because I do. Where are the vibrant red, uplifting yellow etc etc? Dull and conservative is my summation. DAB radio should now be standard, it costs very little to build in to any system, and beats AM and FM by a long shot. I don't mind buying 95 octane for this car, despite the fact it's going to be an Uber vehicle, but some people might. Overall: 9.5 out of 10, because the driving experience is so overwhelmingly beautiful, whatever the small imperfections. Update: September 2017 Fuel economy has improved a lot, can actually get around 5.5 litres/ 100 km on an expressway run at the 80kph speed limit. 2 defects discovered. The rear hatch glass leaks in the carwash, not a lot but enough to warrant repair. And, the infotainment system sometimes just dies. Which means No rear view camera, no radio cd sd music, no satnav display. This happened with regularity over the colder months of Winter. I read online that it is a common fault dating back to 2015. Why haven't they fixed it by now? It can be temporarily fixed by pushing and holding in the power on button on the infotainment console for 15 seconds continuously. It's a type of reset for the whole infotainment system, but its a fault none the less. Car goes in for its first (15000km) service next week, costs $320, and hopefully they can address the faults mentioned above. After 14,800 kms, it is still a brilliant drive, and no minor issues can detract from that perfect dynamic balance, and joyful, engine. Update: November 2017 I have downrated my rating to a 4. This is still a brilliant drive in so many ways, but the VW dealer in Artarmon on Sydney’s North Shore, where I bought it has been extremely underwheelming. The leak in the rear hatch glass has been traced to the high-mounted brake light which is defective, but the dealer was unable to replace it at the first service in September, and it remains an ever increasing leak. They ordered the part back then, but failed to tell me it had arrived. I guess im supposed to be psychic. Meanwhile, whenever it rains the rear parcel shelf gets soggy and perhaps is now growing a micro crop of mould. The infotainment system also wasnt fixed in September at the service. It still just stops working when it chooses, together with the navigation program and reversing camera. They tell me it needs a software update but have no idea when that will be available. This is despite this failure being commonly reported in VW forums as far back as 2015. Is it VW or a slack dealer? I don't know. I suspect the dealer, who now has my money and couldnt give a crap. So im upset with the dealer, but still think the car is a brilliant drive. Maybe it should be 3 stars. I’ll see how long this dealership continues to stuff me around. Update April 2022 Sorry Golf, I’ve downgraded you to 3 stars. Took it to the dealer for a “B” service and because of an error message i kept getting popping up on the dashboard screen. It was never there long enough to read but the long and short of it is that my baby has a serious gearbox issue after 2.5 years and only 38k kilometres. The Mechatronics unit which controls the DSG gearbox, is dying. This could eventually cause the gearbox to stop working altogether or just stop certain gears being selected. This also poses a serious safety issue if it happens on the freeway, as well as causing the loss of thousands of dollars of resale value. Now this is a problem that has plagued VW and Audi DSG gearboxes for years, but they still havent sorted it! Try Googling VW Mechatronic and you will see what i mean. I am told VW Australia has authorised for my unit to be replaced, but the cost would have been $4000 to $6000 if the car had been out of warranty or if they had refused to come to the party and pay for the repair. So it goes in for surgery in 2 weeks. So its still a brilliant drive, while it hangs in, but goes back to 3 stars. Do i have confidence this wont happen again in 2 years when the car is way out of warranty.? No. The Internet is full of sad stories of owners who have had this problem twice. Living in hope. Update Oct 2022. The dreaded killer Error message signifying the Mechatronics issue withe gearbox is back. 3 times last week, despite the Mechatronics module being replaced earlier thisvyear. As thecwarranty is nearly up, i am concerned the gearbox will pack up and this problem will cost me a lot of money. ( Perhaps 3 to 6 thousand dollars to replace as this is major work involving major disassembly.) Also, the intermittent problem with the reversing camera persists. Mostly it works, sometimes, perhaps 1 in 20 times, it simply doesn't. At the last service some months ago they investigated again and told me again it is a software issue for which they have no update yet. Which suggests all Golfs of this vintage have the issue. Sounds like crap. Anyway, the car is booked in yet again for investigation of these problems. If nothing else i want it established in the paper trail that these problems were reported shortly before the warranty expired. I am not hopeful of a good outcome, and having worked on the driveway of a large German car makers service department in Sydney, i think i know what i am talking about. But i will pursue this even out of warranty if necessary.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Has anyone had a remote control car key die and found any alternative to paying the $620 VW want for a new one please? My car is a 2016 Golf TDI, auto Mark 7
Thank you, John.

Good luck John. In my experience, VW are not helpful and are very expensive. My golf does not have a remote key but you would think they would have a battery that could be replaced as other remote devices do. Maybe that’s just another way VW makes more money.
Thanks Meredith but I have changed the battery and it still doesn't work. Looks like it needs a new internal PCB.
Thanks anyway, regards John.

Logically check your manual or sales doco first
Hi Sandra. I have just needed to find an answer to the same question. I've been through all the documentation including service book, sales dockets etc. and came up blank. A good Google search provided the answer. The easy answer is ... if you have rounded tail lights, it's Mk 6, if they are sharp edged design, Mk 7. Mark 7 also has the sophisticated "Infotainment System" with GPS and lots of other choices (radio, car, menu etc.) in the middle of the dash.
Regards, John.

age about 6.5 litres per 100kms. I do miss having a reversing camera or rear parking sensors. It’s not that the car is hard to park. It’s just that being a city liver now, they’d be useful. At the last service the electric handbrake was fixed under a warranty recall. Not that there seemed to be anything wrong with it. I still love my car for all the reasons mentioned originally. My partner and I are very much looking forward to our upcoming road trip to the Victorian high country this weekend. The Golf will be perfect.
