Hello can you kindly advise how long it should take to preheat for both cooking (pressure cooking) seems to take forever add serious amount of time to my cooking? Thank you

The time for Heating depends on the volume of liquid. It is best to start your cooking 2 hours before you need to use it.
This is a general rule as I like to Sear my bones before making broth or Saute the onions carrots & celery before making soup etc.
You will be rewarded if you take the time to brown, sear or saute before the pressure cooking, Ed

I usually find pre-heating time (before it starts the pressure cooking) is around 10mins. It is really important to:
1. make sure the top of the inner bowl is clean
2. wipe the seal inside the lid with a paper towel to ensure it is clean
3. close the lid and turn it slowly until you hear the first ding
4. double check that the pressure release valve is facing the centre of the lid

If you take these precautions you will avoid the dreaded 'not sealed' message

Ok. Trying to pressure cook lamb shanks using the preset program for shanks. It preheated for about 30 mins then indicated lid was not sealed (it made a 'ding' when I first shut it). So I open the lid and shut it again an now it has been back on preheat for 20 minutes so far!!!
I can hear them bubbling away which sounds more like they are cooking than preheating. So far it's been almost an hour for what should be a 30 min pressure cook.
Is this normal please?
What a waste of money and time - it is being returned tomorrow!!!

Sounds like no pressure seal, you can't open it at all if you even try when there's even a little bit of pressure under the lid. The little pressure release on the top, the tab needs to be facing the handle at the top, if not it doesn't seat properly and never seals properly (See p15 of the guide). Preheat usually only takes a minute or two max, but it should show pressure building relatively quickly.

Not had a problem with mine, perhaps a fault?

It will not seal if you have less than a cup of liquid in the inner bowl.

Ive only had this a week. It never seems to leave the preheat phase whether I am steaming with lid closed but unlocked or pressure cooking with lid definitely locked.
How long should it take to preheat? When I tried to cook lentils they were mushy and cooked and still preheating!

Sounds like a fault, I'd call Breville on this. Pre-heat takes around 3-4 minutes for me. Having said that I don't use it as a steamer. I only use it to sear, pressure and slow cook. Sometimes as a rice cooker.

Thank you. I am timing it now - followed directions exactly by not locking lid and removing pressure valve and 12 minutes later it is still on preheat!!

I found a solution after I had this issue the first few times: I realised that the small metal pressure safety valve was not popping up into place when the pressure built up, preventing the cooker from sealing correctly (this is not the large plastic valve). There is a printed warning on the machine to warn about getting the valve aligned, but it's actually quite sensitive. If I rotate the lid all the way closed until it stops, then the metal valve is slightly misaligned and gets stuck, so I need to rotate the lid back open just a touch until the valve is free to pop up AND the cooker sensor still thinks the lid is closed. It's a little annoying to discover the issue, but also it's no hassle to fix once you know what is causing the problem.
I hope this helps a few other new users.

Can you use sealed bags to cook shanks etc in the Breville slow fast pressure cooker?

1 answer

I don't think sealed bags will work in pressure mode, but they might in slow cook mode. I have just cooked a spinach lasagna using a cake tin with a removable bottom sitting on top of the steamer grill. I covered the top of the tin with silver foil and under pressure it worked fine. Not sure if that helps, but good luck anyway.

I just tried to use my Breville pressure cooker for the second time and after it pre heats it says its not sealed. I have checked the seal numerous times and it looks sealed. The pin is lined up okay. What is wrong?

This has only happened to me once. When it didn't seal I had turned the lid until I couldn't turn it anymore and, from memory, it 'dinged' a second time. What I do now is slowly turn the lid until the first 'ding'. If the inner bowl is not hot, I will wet my finger with water and run it around the top lip of the inner bowl. I am not sure if it helps but it doesn't seem to disliked it either. Good luck

Happens to me all time. Even with pin aligned. Once it alarms out with no seal error, press stop and start again. Works everytime. Just means you can't set and forget!

Badgerhobbes

Just push seal down properly and then hold seal as you slowly close the lid and then quickly take your hand out as you quickly push down. The problem is the seal is a bit loose and just falls out a little as your lowering the lid. So just hold it for as long as you can.

So I bought the 650 model today and not sure if I'll keep it yet. I had hoped the slow cook would allow me to cook for the 8 hours then keep warm for a further 2 hours, not the 30 mins it states in the book. I work long days and don't want to spoil a meal by having it sit unheated for too long. Should I have bought something else?

Even after you release the pressure valve? Don't forget to turn the lid before opening to break the seal. I have not had any problems and it is now 2 yrs old

PaulM

The pin that prevents turning / opening the lid when the pot is still pressurized will remain up until all the pressure is released. I found that sometimes I had to lift the pressure valve manually for a few seconds to release all the remaining pressure so the pin would drop down and allow me to rotate the lid. So if this happens again, ensure the safety pin is centred in the lid hole, then lift the pressure valve and wait for the pin to drop down. Hope that helps

I have just bought my Fast Slow Pro and will cook with it tomorrow. Can we use Instant Pot recipes with the FSP? Are there general conversion rules to follow e.g. Instant Pot says for a chicken dish 'cook on Hi for 8 minutes' - what is an equivalent for the FSP? Thank you!

Hi there,

I use ‘instant pot’ recipes in my FSP all the time. So far, I have not had to make any conversions other than your standard imperial to metric. As far as I can tell, both units function in the same way. If it is your first time using the unit, I would recommend trying one of the recipes from the booklet provided (chicken tagine or risotto are my faves). This might help you get acquainted with the basic functions of the unit. Enjoy!

PaulM
PaulM

Thank you for taking the time to answer MRad! After posting the question I continued to search for the similarities between FSP and the IP. On the IP Hi setting the pressure is 11.6 lbs/sq in which is equivalent to the highest setting on FSP (80kPa). My first meal was IP Chicken Tikka Masala and it was fabulous! So very happy to have access to thousands of IP recipes. I have just purchased a second pot from Breville spare parts for $51 delivered.

Is it easy to clean? Does the lid come off completely?

Yes it is really easy to clean! Even after making pulled pork! I even made a delicious roast pumpkin and garlic soup in it and I made a mess, but being easy to clean means that everything comes off easily and it looks new all over again! Yes the lid removes completely. You twist it to the unlock position and then remove it completely. I really love my machine. Good luck with your purchasing decisions. :)

My unit overflowed about 2 cups of liquid when i was using it for chicken soup. What did i do wrong?

Overfilled water perhaps? There's a max fill mark on the inner pot, ensure you don't exceed this. I usually buy a bag of chicken carcasses (around 4 in a bag) but find I have to cut them a little or push them down quite a lot (need to break the bones some) to fit that many in the pot. Don't do your possible old habit of "cover the chickens with water" trick, go only to the max fill line.

I forgot to use the cooking bowl and put dry lentils directly into the base. I realized and removed as many as I could. There are still a few stuck inside the base. I can hear it when I shake the machine. What should I do??

if you have registered online with Breville, then you can contact them and they should have a record of you. Alternately you can contact the dealer or shop where you did purchase and I am sure they should find you in system. I hope this will help.

I am having the same issue, bought this unit to replace previous unit. Comes up to temprature and gives a warning of not sealed, lift the lid put it back down reseal and away it goes. I am hacked off with having to do this to cook a meal. Its a great unit when it works the way it should cant fault it. There definetly is a sealing problem. I have moistened the seal and the rim of the pan to try and help the sealing before closing the lid, no difference. There is an issue and i believe Breville need to address this problem as this unit is not cheap. I am in the throughs of taking this unit back to the supplier ( Harvey Norman) don't hold your breath

Hi both. Have either of you found a solution to this yet? My brand new unit has now done this the last 2 times I've used it. And have only used it 4 times in total. Thinking of calling Breville to replace or refund

From my experience normally a pressure cooker or a slow cooker is used to give foods a tenderising action
Fish would be ok if added lastly before serving but definately chicken can be cooked if in some sort of sayce. Curries, stews etc perfect.

Hi Donna, I was wondering if you had any luck with this? I puchased mine yesterday (brand new) and have been trying to cook the beef & guiness pie recipe from the Breville booklet. A few times now it’s tried to build up pressure and after 10-15mins, it beeps and says the lid isn’t seeled!! Super frustrating considering it’s supposed to be one of the better pressure cookers! Thanks in advance, CJ

I finally figured out my own "lid not sealed" problem...it was the pressure relief valve on the top of the lid was not properly aligned. It needs to be seated and face the lid knob as shown on page 17 of the BPR700 manual (US). The pressure relief valve on top is not the same as the "safety locking pin" that is aligned when you lock the lid.

There could be a number of reasons for this issue. Check that the rubber seal is attached to the lid. Check that the sealing nut (holds lid to the hinge) is tight. Check that the pressure release valve is sitting in the groove. When you close the lid check that the safety pin is centre in the hole on the hinge. Ideally it should have been designed to take the guess work out of trying to centre the hole and pin because it will indicate the lid is sealed when the pin is not fully on centre. Ensure there is enough liquid in the cooker. Hope this helps.

Haven't used mine yet (AU model). In the instruction manual it says to "remove" the pressure release valve from the lid when slow cooking. I can't find any explanation on how to do this. I can rotate the valve to the open or closed position but I don't want to use force in case I break something. Any advice?

Good point. The manual needs to be clearer regarding this point. The valve is clipped on so if you gently pull it then it will lift off. Hope this helps.
