Hi Vickie
Sorry for getting back a bit late but I’d say take it to dyson as it’s very unusual for it to just stop. And are you sure u didn’t smell anything odd before it stopped ? Check with dyson and good luck with it all i hope this will help you thanks.

My Dyson DC54 still has suction but the rotating brush no longer rotates. I've checked for blockages and that's not the issue. Is this just a problem with the head - which I can replace - or something more sinister.

Hi Delwyn,

Thanks for your question.

This issue can be caused by a blockage of airflow which reduces the suction.

Please check the turbine head for blockages as shown here: http://www.dyson.com.au/support/dc54/dc54-animal/my-machine-is-not-working/turbine-head-not-working-properly

Please check the machine for blockages as shown here, please pay close attention to the section 50 seconds in, this part can be tested by dropping a 20 cent coin through the lower duct hose starting near the oval opening on the main body, behind the bin, if the coin does not come out, tip the machine over to get your coin out then proceed with the instructions in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PheQ00a_urU

If this does not resolve the issue please reach out at [email protected] and we will be happy to help you further.

Best wishes,

Hi we have a DC54. Our helper accidentally hosed down the cyclone unit and the clear bin with water. I'm afraid this has ruined it completely. I have never used water on it and it has worked perfectly for years. I've dried it out and will keep it in the sun for a few days.
Will this affect it's performance? Hmehat are the faults i have to look out for thanks

As long as the motor was not hosed down it will be fine. In fact the only way I can clean the filter properly is by hosing it down. Just emptying out the unit into the trash, leaves behind heaps of smaller particles and that is why I believe this vacuum has a design fault, because the selling feature was that you never have to clean the filter. You would get a shock to see how much comes out when you hose it down - and I also hose down that other plastic cyclone section. Just make sure it’s completely dry before using. I much prefer a filter that is accessible and that is one of a few reasons why I do not like this machine

Hi Ash,

Thank you for your query.

if the cyclone has been washed, we would encourage you to consider replacing it as if it doesn't completely dry; it can encourage mould growth and allow water to cause damage to the motor.

I would encourage you to give us a call on 1800 239 766 to discuss further. Our Dyson Experts are available Monday - Friday 8 am - 8 pm and Saturday - Sunday 8:30 am - 4 pm EST.

I took the canister off the machine to empty. While I was doing that, someone in the house pushed the handle down on the machine and put it away. I now can't put the canister back on. How do I lift the handle to get the canister on?

Hi, I have bought the DC54 allergy model. It was hard to decide as I have a dust allergy but we also have dogs. When we vacuum (4th use) the power head seems to blow the dust around rather than picking it up. This is on wooden floors. The suction is great but for visible dirt or hair on the floorboards it blows it around and you need many passes over the same area to clean it properly. It seems like a lot of work for a vac that is RRP of $900. Any one got any ideas? surely I don't need to go to vacuum cleaning classes!

You have the blockage as I described either in your hose or the head. Ring the service centre they are really so helpful and dont make you feel stupid.
Just means probably where the brush is put the coin into the screw at the end and turn this will release the brush then look into cavity and you will probably see dust caught in the pipe remove (I had a crayon). Put back together all will be good.

That worked......brilliant! Thanks so much.

I have a new dyson dc54 allergy and dust/dirt gathers at the top of the cylinder (at the top just at the seal). Customer support said this means it needs to be cleaned and should only happen if it is full. But I cleaned it thoroughly (removed the bin etc and cleaned it all out) and it happened again after one minute of vacuuming. is this normal or is there something wrong with the machine? It's less than 24 hours old and only used for about 10-15 minutes.

Hi there. In my experience the DC54 range of vacuum cleaners are lemons. Dyson try to tell you no-one else is reporting problems, but we all are! Disposal of the dust that collects in and around the the bin & cyclone is a ridiculous exercise, worthy of a Mr Bean episode. I have had my vacuum cleaner for two years now, and have never yet managed to empty it without ending up in a dust bath. I'm afraid your machine sounds fairly "normal", judging by my experience and that of most of the reviewers on this site.

Although Dyson will not admit that this new style canister is a design flop, those using the vacuum will certainly confirm it. It is normal (but not acceptable) that a lot of the dirt and fluff accumulates around the entry to the canister and builds up over the red line while the remainder of the canister is relatively empty. The design is also terrible for emptying, Dyson will tell you all the wonderfully simple ways to empty it (the fact that a company needs to instruct so many people how to empty a canister is in itself an indication that there is a problem). Nothing you do will make the dirt fall out of this vacuum and into a bag, without getting it everywhere and all over your hands. A lot of the fluff will remain trapped in the canister in spite of using the little magic wand they provide you with, you will need to resort to diving your fingers into the canister and pulling out the hair and fluff. How this vacuum achieved the Asthma Foundation's accreditation is beyond me. Have you tried for a refund?
