Vacuum Cleaners Buying Guide
Our buying guide will explain which type of vacuum cleaner would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.
ALL THE BAD REVIEWS ON THIS ONE ARE SPOT ON
After purchasing my first Dyson and having it last for years and being more than impressed with it, I purchased my second Dyson - the DC54. Right from the beginning it was not even close in the amount of dirt and dust it would suction up. the Spinning head constantly needs cleaning in spite of it being specifically for pet hair. The suction is terrible. I have sworn to never buy a Dyson again. At POS it was told that my expensive heads purchased separately with my previous vacuum would definitely fit and be able to be used. That was not the cas...Read more
e. The dust housing is flimsy at best and has to be handled gently. I could have bought a cheap vacuum and had the same result so why waste money on another Dyson. All of the reviews posted on this exact same issue should have had Dyson recall this product as everyone seems to be reporting the same issues.Purchased at The Good Guys for $899.00.

Not as good as old upright dyson
To begin, all previous cheaper model vacuums I've owned, have lasted a maximum of 2 years. I've had this machine for quite some time. This is my second Dyson. I use it on carpets. I tried it on vinyl flooring when first purchased, but didn't think it did that great of a job. The previous machine I owned was a DC 14 and I loved that machine. It was easy to use and I had no issues whatsoever with that until the motor finally died. I loved how sturdy it was as well. When looking for my current machine I went with the barrel as I felt that...Read more
the newer uprights at the time weren't as sturdy (when playing around with one in store) I must say that I prefer the upright. The barrel tends to fall onto its side when going around corners. The motor on this machine is still going strong but over time I've had to purchase replacement parts. The first was a new head. The turbine head was an absolute pain to open to clean the bristles, and in the end the bristles came off. I purchased a musclehead this time and have had no issues with that so far. In June 2022, the handle snapped so I purchased a new one of those as well from the dyson website. The cannister is an absolute pain to empty. I use a butter knife to dislodge it into the bin. Always end up sweeping the floor afterwards. I would love to purchase one of those scraper gadgets but I can't add one to the cart on the website. It says I have to ring to enquire. How annoying!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Taking them to court
We had nothing but issues with this vacuum and after many times of being it repaired and motor replacements, this time the motor has gone again in exactly 12 months when I was infact advised this motor would have warranty. But still they want to hit me UP with more costs and replacing the motor... They have said to us apparently we are not maintaining the cyclone filters and then when I told them that the reason we purchased this vacuum was that it was maintenance free all we had to was empty out the bin and clean around the cyclones Area (appa...Read more
rently no!! you have to go beyond this and open up behind the cyclones), [name removed] from customer relations told us apparently there is a chip on the top and caused the motor to die haha this is the silliest excuse from a untrained customer relations worker, Please come up with something more logical and believable. As a person who has a background in engineering I can tell you this is no where near the truth, this phone call was recorded and I have proof also given them many options and now I am willing to prove to these big companies that you will not get away with it and I am now proceeding legal action including getting a hold of all news agencies to show Australia what Dyson is about, have already emailed a current affair, a petition will be started online against dyson on the way they honour their warranty with all the proof I have and also will flood social media with the dodgy business practices of Dyson. Let's see how much a few hundred dollars will cost them in the long run.. We as the consumers have had enough of the big guys screwing the consumers.. I would not recommend any Dyson product to anyone,it might look nice and fancy but the way they handle a faulty product is absolutely rubbish. I beg you dear reader to think twice about this brand
Purchased in February 2021 for $899.00.

What a waste of money..
This machine is expensive and poorly made. We vacuum carpet and hard floors. On the hard floor the head does not pick up anything more than dust.. The spinning brush tangles up with hair and the small wheels on the unit also jam with hair.. On empting the unit stuff goes everywhere. The spinning brush head now is worn and spares seem unavailable. What a waste of money..
Purchased in November 2021 for $850.00.

Terrible.
I have had problems with blockages at the entrance to the main portion containing the motor -- the motor to emit a burning smell-- I rang Dyson- out of warranty ( 2 year in Aust 5 in the US ) they say send it to repair people who will then charge me for replacement parts--- the DC54 has been taken off the market as it is unfit for purpose, yet Dyson are still refusing to compensate ---- they stink and their customer service is a fraud

No good for families and all the attachments break
This machine will only pick up things smaller than a 5c piece. Anything larger won't go through the hole between the head and the pipe. So if you have children, this means picking up the 5000 tiny pieces of paper by hand before you even think about vacuuming up the rest of the mess.
The turbo head will no longer turn, even after cleaning it multiple times. This has significantly affected suction.
The barrel cleaner has broken, need to use a ruler to clean it.
For every hour of vacuuming, expect to spend an hour cleaning out the barrel (ours...Read more

Worst vacuum cleaner. The dc54 is the biggest waste of money ever. Suction bad brush wear is shockin
Sometimes it tips over but I don’t vac every day I expected more from a Dyson cleaner . I have had brush problems since purchasing and after paying for the cleaner how can you afford to buy new brushes. It doesn’t hold much dust and getting it from the sides of the canister is ridiculous,so disappointed.

This vacuum cleaner is fantastic.
Highly recommend any Dyson product. They definitely are a great machine. It cleans our carpet perfectly. We have a dog that sleeps Inside every night and I vacuum most days it still works great and we have had it over 3 years. The head on it might need to be replaced soon but that is simply due to wear and tear. When we do need another vacuum down the track we will alway go with a Dyson. My mum has one of the old purple and lime green ones it would have to be 10 or more years old and it still works great! Funky colours too lol.

Overrated and bagless is too much hassle
One of the reasons we went for the DC54 Allergy was to minimize the exposure to dust and allergens. Unfortunately while it does a reasonable job on the sucking, it sucks at doing the emptying. There is virtually no way to avoid dust getting all over a plastic bag, rubbish bin, or the outside of the dust container. If you have people with long hair in the family, then these will get caught around the inside of the barrel and be difficult to remove. For the hassle free nature of bagged, I would go that direction for my next cleaner.

Dyson Falls Over On My Polished Floors
Wow so glad this is discontinued this Dyson use to tip over all the time on me. I mean all the time on my polished floors finely upgraded to the Dyson Animal Pro. Witch corrects it self when it falls over and when things use to get stuck in bag bit I use to have to get a screw driver and get it out that way how annoying.

Turbo head not working
I bought DC 54 Allergy Barrel Vacuum cleaner in Aug 2015. This is my first Dyson product and I was impressed with its powerful motor and efficiency in cleaning the carpets. Based on my initial experience, I recommended this product to my family and friends who have had similar good experiences using it.
However, the Turbo head of my vacuum started playing up around May 2017 and I followed all the troubleshooting tips on your website but to no avail. It is not spinning when I switch on the vacuum and there is no blockage in any of the pipes.

Worst vacuum don't buy a Dyson go for a MIELE!
A total waste of money - does not clean the floors, I need to just use the hose to vacuum the dirt of the carpet as the floor bush get block easily.
Don't buy a DYSON go for a MIELE - best vacuum. I had a Miele (cat and dog) for nearly 20 years and never had a problem. Bought the DC54 2 years ago and ready to replace it.
A nightmare to empty out...your breathing all the dust as you empty it out so much for an Allergy machine!
I always feel as though i haven't cleaned the floors and it does the suction is not that great.
I am constantly trying to clean the vacuum cleaner, rather than it cleaning the floors!!!

Is not fit for the purpose, does not meet the description.
My husband bought this for me as a birthday present because he knew I had always wanted a Dyson. The suction is so poor in comparison to the first time I used it and I can't clean the filter because it's a sealed unit. Very bad design fault on the tube which attaches to the clear plastic bowl, it is so narrow and dirt keeps getting stuck in there.

Sucked in.
After 2 years use I have mixed feelings of this Malaysian made item. Very average collection bowl, a hassle to clean with fine dust stuck to the plastic, the main roller being subject to binding with long hair. The snap lock style fittings are a bit sloppy too after use. Does my small house nicely and is rather noisy and the extension handle could be a little longer too.
Will look to replace soon

Poor Customer Service...Head breaks easily and very expensive replacement
Bought my DC54 a couple of years ago from the Good Guys. We use it occasionally but the head broke and there's no more suction.
I’ve been trying to ring customer service but the wait time keeps increasing. I was on hold for more than 30 minutes, when initially, I was told that the wait time is only 16 minutes. After more than 30 minutes waiting, I was advised that wait time went up to 22 minutes...Very frustrating.
I rang Dyson again the following day and had to wait for nearly an hour. When I finally spoke to the customer service, I was...Read more
told that it's now more than 2 months out of the 2 year warranty so I need to buy a new head for about $140. I paid the machine for nearly $600 as we thought it was a good brand. I am aware that I’m still covered under Australian Consumer law, as this product should last for a reasonable amount of time. My old $80 vacuum cleaner lasted for more than 3 years, so I would expect that this product should be comparably better. The Australian Consumer Law states that manufacturer should provide warranty cover for a reasonable time, and for the amount of money we paid for the vacuum cleaner, I'd expect it to last longer. I was asking for a discount as the price was a bit too much for the head. I can already buy a new vacuum cleaner for the cost of the part only. Besides the machine itself is more than 2 years and might not last any longer but was told that's the price if I want to replace it. I think this is my last Dyson product ever...No wonder it's now discontinued.1 comment

Better Than ALL the Rest
This machine with all of its power would have to be the best vacuum cleaner I have ever purchased.
Light to manoeuvre around robust and so well balanced.
The plastic housing is strong and can really take the knocks that just happen.
Extra long cord makes it easy to work from one power point.

never again
I purchased this Dyson thinking it would vacuum my house including carpet, not so. It works well on hard floors and is quite maneuverable but that's about it. It is hopeless on carpet, you have to continually empty it and the fine dust clogs it up. The turbo head continually gets clogged up with hair and the brush fell apart. I have to say I'm very disappointed with it considering the high price I paid for it.

Cleans the floor well, terrible to empty
Not happy with this product. It does a good job sucking up hair and dust from the carpets, however, I was told it was allergy friendly, but I have had more issues since buying this vacuum. Whilst it may have good filters to stop dust being blown back into the air from the vacuum, emptying the barrel is a nightmare. The dust billows back up into your face and trying to empty it into a bag is difficult.

This has to be the worst vacuum ever designed.Going from a DC08 to a DC54 was the worst decision I h
The worst vacuum ever designed.
Allergy free???
How could you possibly design a machine to be used from allergy sufferers when it is impossible to change the filter without breathing in all the dust let alone getting it all over your hands and clothes.
Very disappointing

Faulty and disappointing - both the product and Dyson's customer service processes
This overpriced, loud machine lost suction in the first 10 months of being used in a small, animal-free apartment. After a whole seance of troubleshooting with Dyson's phone customer service, we sent the vac for a repair in Dyson's NSW service centre, only to have it returned three weeks later in the same state that it was sent in. No comments were made in their service report. We called again, and spent half an hour trying to explain that the suction is still problematic and sub-standard, to which their only solution was: you can send it to us...Read more
again - noting that it was just returned to us, after they had kept it for over 15 days without providing us with at least a temporary replacement. My husband is allergic to dust - hence our investment in this machine in the first place. We have a 2-year warranty. Even so, Dyson are not willing to provide a replacement, even a temporary one while they 'look at our machine again'. With this kind of customer disservice, it's more than Dyson's suction that sucks. They have just lost yet another customer.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Sorry for getting back a bit late but I’d say take it to dyson as it’s very unusual for it to just stop. And are you sure u didn’t smell anything odd before it stopped ? Check with dyson and good luck with it all i hope this will help you thanks.

My Dyson DC54 still has suction but the rotating brush no longer rotates. I've checked for blockages and that's not the issue. Is this just a problem with the head - which I can replace - or something more sinister.

Hi Delwyn,
Thanks for your question.
This issue can be caused by a blockage of airflow which reduces the suction.
Please check the turbine head for blockages as shown here: http://www.dyson.com.au/support/dc54/dc54-animal/my-machine-is-not-working/turbine-head-not-working-properly
Please check the machine for blockages as shown here, please pay close attention to the section 50 seconds in, this part can be tested by dropping a 20 cent coin through the lower duct hose starting near the oval opening on the main body, behind the bin, if the coin does not come out, tip the machine over to get your coin out then proceed with the instructions in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PheQ00a_urU
