I bought Dyson DC54 six months ago and recently it generates stinky dust smell when operating it, how can I clean it and get rid of the smell. to be honest, I don't like this product especially when emptying the dirt, it is a messy job, dust flying everywhere and those dust that stay on the surface on the bottom of the cyclone output will accumulate germs / bacterial from time to time, not sure about other parts that are not visible, logically, if there's a stinky smell, there must be accumulation of bacterial. Any ideas?

I'm sorry but, as one of the original contributors to this thread, my advice to you would be to go out and buy a different vacuum cleaner. After doing battle with my Dyson DC54 half a dozen times, I gave up and went out & chose an Electrolux which is a joy to use - however I would have to say almost any non-Dyson machine will be an improvement over what you're stuck with. It may seem wasteful to fork out for two machines, but it is much more wasteful to have an expensive lemon standing unused in a cupboard because it makes the job SO DAMNED TEDIOUS. Lozza.

Hi there,
Thank you for your question.
Should any form of liquid or damp enter the machine, this may cause it to harbour a smell. We recommend carrying out the following steps which may dispel any odour.
After emptying you may rinse the clear bin in cold water as per the instructions in your user guide, ensuring that no detergents are used. Please don't remove the bin inner or cone seals whilst washing the clear bin and most importantly ensure that the clear bin is completely dry before placing back onto the machine. Please note that the cyclone top assembly, which attaches on top of the bin, must be removed and is not washable.
We also recommend to let the cyclone, hose, floor tool and wand of your machine air out for 24-48 hours, ideally somewhere safe, dry and sunny.
Best wishes,
Samuel

Most people vacuum because they want to rid the home of dust. How could anyone design something that when u empty The barrel u are covered In dust germs bacteria subject to asthma attacks. How rude of them to take us for suckers

We bought a DC54 a few months ago. Within a month of using it, regularly, the scraper to clean the barrel (which is a pain in the butt) snapped. I am now using scrap pieces of card from the recycle bin, torn up and fashioned to fit inside the barrel to scrape out the hair and dust. The machine works fine BUT- am I asking too much for a sturdy scraper to help clean the barrel out??

I Just use one of those Baby Bottle brushes and on the outside just my dustpan brush. All the hype about Dyson's not worth it, especially if you have messy people like mine.
I would give it away or swap for a hoover any day. Good Luck Sam, Teebone

I'm very glad to hear that Dyson are able to organise a replacement scraper for Sam. But I think what most of us want is a replacement vacuum cleaner. The DC54 is just a lemon.

Can you please tell me why all answers only relate to broken part's, and not to the actual problems with the actual machine???
Wand far too short...crappy materials used, quality absolute crap!!!.. where has Dysons integrity gone???.. It's all about money making, not about addressing the problems...
Answer that????

Find me a product that does not have crappy materials that you have to spend a fortune on. Sadly this is the way of the world now. Cost cutting is the norm. Still I think Dyson is still the best product in the marketplace. Have you tried extending the wand or are you a super tall person?
