Vacuum Cleaners Buying Guide
Our buying guide will explain which type of vacuum cleaner would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.
Nightmare from the start
My first Dyson (one of the first available in Australia, was a dream machine, unfortunately after many years of use this machine ended it's life in the hands of a careless home helper, so in 2015 I purchased another Dyson, the one recommended for homes with pets. This vacuum is a nightmare, the roller brush thumps the dust out of the carpet then blows the dust around and does not pick it up, I end up having to use the small upholstery brush to clean all the carpets in my home, though generally the upholstery brush is very good for upholstery it...Read more
will soon wear out if I am needing to vacuum a large home with it, not to mention the time it takes with a tiny upholstery brush. The roller brush is good that it can be taken apart to remove debris such as cottons wound around it, but it is time consuming to have to continually clean fluff out of it by hand too. The brush for wooden floors which I had to purchase as an extra, is strangely angled, does not sit well on the floor and so cannot be used to effect under furniture. and the style of the brush underside is not conducive to good suction and I am continually needing to clean it by hand. This vacuum cannot cope with any piece of debris larger than a pea, today I had to take it apart again and remove all the dirt by hand, yep onto the carpet and then I used a brush and spade, clearing the blockage is very time consuming and happens too often. As for the emptying process, (what were Dyson thinking?) it is by far the messiest possible emptying process ever designed, even emptying into a large empty water barrel kept specifically for this process leaves me covered in dust, and I need to use a skinny stick to rigorously poke all the fluff and dust that is stuck tight in the narrow space (less than 1/2 inch in width) surrounding the drum which is the pitiful receptacle for dust in this product, it takes ages to empty and then it is so messy and dusty still that I have to clean it out with soap and water every week, yep the water runs disgustingly black and much rinsing still does not result in a clean looking drum which then needs to be dried outdoors in the sun for a few days. This product is an environmental disaster in any home let alone a home with asthma sufferers. I find this vacuum cleaner to be heavy and awkward to use and carry about, it tips easily when pulled, does not corner well and is awkward to store when not in use. The wand is too short causing me to stoop uncomfortably resulting in back pain, and I am only 5 foot 2" (once again what were Dyson thinking? surely tall people vacuum too). I have contacted the Dyson help line soon after buying this product and told them I had half a mind to return it, the lady told me to get a Phillips screw driver and remove part of the vacuum cleaner so I could remove the blockage, which I did, however the area where the blockage occurred was so narrow I soon realised blockages were likely to occur a lot more often with this model, and I was right I had to get my screwdriver out to unblock it again today, In hindsight I wish now that I had returned it to the store and asked for my money back. The idea that a cleaner can block so easily with such a small item and then the user needs to get a screwdriver and remove the item is ridiculous. The vacuum cleaner is not fit for purpose, I no longer recommend Dyson, and I will never even consider buying Dyson again.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Absolute garbage
This is by far the worst vacuum i have ever bought absolute garbage always had terrible suction. Motor stops and starts 3 years old and now having to replace it do not buy should have been a recalled model shame that Dysons old vacuums are better at least they lasted.

Junk - Do Not Waste Your Money
I bought this vacuum as I was told Dyson was the best in the business but it is a worthless piece of junk. It is terrible on wooden floors and just pushes the dirt around without vacuuming up.
We have returned it several times and keep getting told it is fine but after speaking to other people they've experience the same problem.
Tried to get a refund or credit but to no avail.
I will never buy another Dyson again - Do not waste your money!!

Poor pick up is generally a result of a blockage in the machine. Please check the turbine head for blockages as shown here: http://www.dyson.com.au/support/dc54/dc54-animal/my-machine-is-not-working/turbine-head-not-working-properly Check the openings on the tool for blockages and use a long thin tool such as a skewer or knitting needle to clear the channels and reattach the parts. Please check the machine for blockages, please pay close attention to the section 50 seconds in, this part can be tested by dropping a 20 cent coin through the lower duct hose starting near the oval opening on the main body, behind the bin, if the coin does not come out, tip the machine over to get your coin out then proceed with the instructions in the video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PheQ00a_urU If this does not resolve the issue or if you wish to discuss this further please reach out at [email protected] Best wishes, Mira Facebook.com/DysonSimilar opinion? The poor pick up you are experiencing could be caused by an internal blockage. Please check the turbine head for blockages as shown here: http://www.dyson.com.au/support/dc54/dc54-animal/my-machine-is-not-working/turbine-head-not-working-properly Please also check the remainder of the machine for blockages as shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PheQ00a_urU If this does not resolve the issue, please reach out at [email protected] and we will be happy to help. Stong vacuum
The machine is good with carpet, very powerful and stong suction. It is very light and easy to maneuver. I normally use it every fortnight and my home always keep clean. It a little bit noizy i guess because it is powerful which is toleratable. The only problem for me is the rabbish bottle is not easy to clean.

This is a good unit but high price
Good performance
it is not light and noisy, not easy to maneuver as it always flip over.
it does the job.
I used it mainly on hard floor, tile and floating floor
unit is heavy to carry around but the suction is a big plus, if the price is cheaper i would 100% recommand

Still going strong after 18 months
Our Dyson wasn't cheap but it is worth every cent. We got plenty of options and use most of them. It cleans fabulously but the container fills quite quickly because it is so efficient. Never mind, it is quick to empty even if you need to give it a good shake to get the excess dust out. We use it five or six times a week for a total of perhaps 10 hours as we have a big house. THe new big ball ones look great but envy isn't enough reason to swap something that works for something that is better and improved. I will stick with my vacuum knowing it will last a long time.

Request for recall model and should be replace or repair free of charge
Brought this October 2014. Top of the range for $990. Use to vacuum my kitchen vinyl floor. And on carpet for whole house around 5 times only. The reason why not used often because I could not able to vacuum my desk and other furniture. The brush could not pick the dirt up well. Last month motor turn on and next minutes burned and stop. What a joke that...! Contacted Dyson and they said we here to help. They asked me to replace the motor or the old model as it had filter and good to used for vacuum pet hair. Really...? Worst vacuum cleaner ever.
Having had an early model Dyson, which was the best vacuum I'd ever owned, I rushed into buying this new one when my old one broke. What a mistake! So I guess Dyson listened to all the terrible reviews and then discontinued this beast. The worst part of all was the tiny capacity dust barrel, which was incredibly difficult to empty, and which also caused a massive puff of dust and dirt within a several metre radius upon emptying, therefore negating all of the supposed benefits of the asthma and allergen friendly cleaner. But what will Dyson do f...Read more

Will they do a complimentary changeover to the newer Cinetic Ball Animal Pro? Waste of Money
This is my second and last Dyson. Suction is appalling on such an expensive machine and is better to flick things around the room than the actual job it was made for. Nightmare to empty and the small tube is prone to getting things stuck. it is definitely not made for animals. Overall a horrible vacuum

DC 54 motor burnt out
Same for me. DC 54 approx 3 years old motor burnt out last week end. I found the nut holding the motor armature had come off and laying around in the barrel. Customer service not too interested. Standard answer....out of warranty blah blah. I live on my own and hasn't had a hard work out.

Bad
Hi as previously owned 3 Dyson before I bought this one which cost $1100.
After a few smaller issues with it which Dyson sorted out. I was using it and there was a loud bang and a big flame near where my 3 year old was whilst I vacuumed. I called product support where lady was nice and offered to send courier out to pick it up. I mentioned it was out of warranty and she said it will be ok as only was just out of warranty.
I was shocked to be told it is going to cost $250 to fix it as needs a new motor.
In Australia we have a thing called consumer guarantee which warranty doesn't matter as you expect a product to last a reasonable amount of time and not an $1100 vacuum to only last 2 years

Dyson does GREAT products but NOT THIS ONE!
Been using Dyson products for many years while very satisfied with the other Vacuums over the years but this one is a joke! You can barely empty the barrel at all!! Need to stick your hands into the gap to pull the hair and crap out! If that's the way it works then might as well swipe the floors with my bare hands................

For the best results with a DC54, please empty the barrel when the dirt hits the max line on the side of the clear bin. If you have dirt stuck around the sides of the cyclone shroud above the max line, please open the base of then bin and empty it, then press the oval silver button near the top of the bin, you will now be able to remove the clear bin from the cyclone and wipe around the cyclone shroud with a clean dry cloth or brush. This product sucks (badly)
I was sucked into the Dyson hype and am terribly disappointed. We ended up buying for $799 and wow, what a waste of money.
Negatives:
Doesn't suck very well, I often go over and over crumbs or a piece of cotton on the floor boards and it just won't pick it up. Not even sure why I bother trying to vacuum our rug.
Not as quiet as expected.
Messy to empty.
One of the plastic pieces on the side of the main attachments just falls off constantly.
There is a tiny part in the main attachment which gets clogged up constantly (the only...Read more

Absolute rubbish for asthmatic
Not at all happy. This vacuum was purchased on sale for $900 and i thought I was finally getting a Dyson after all these years as family have older models and love them. This vacuum is hopeless, doesn't pick up all the dirt and so hard to empty, the fine dust goes absolutely everywhere and you can't get it to empty the dirt without having to get your hands in to pull it all out. TOTALLY not ideal for an asthmatic or anyone wanting a quick, easy and unmessy empty, as this has been such an issue we have only used this vacuum a few times and revert to our old one, what a total waste of money.... Never again Dyson.

Of course we are disappointed by this review and wanted to reach out with some advice. To effectively empty the bin canister, we recommend to take the bin off the machine and lower it into a large garbage bin, such as a council bin. The bulk of the dust and debris will fall from the bin. If you find debris caught in the trap door, you can use the combination tool to hold the trap door open and give it a gentle tap out. If you are having trouble removing debris from inside the cyclone shroud, you can remove the clear canister away to make this easier. To do this, open the bin like you were going to empty it normally, then press the silver button between the two red rods and you’ll be able to remove the clear bin from the cyclone. Once the clear bin is removed it will make it easier to clean the bin flap as well. You can then also use the combination tool (with brush extended) to brush any debris off the shroud. We recommend the debris doesn’t fill over the red max line. If it does, it will make the machine significantly harder to empty. Whilst the machine doesn't have a capacity as large as previous Dyson machines, your DC54 has no filters to wash or replace. If you require further support, please contact our customer care team on 1800 239 766. Our helpline is open Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm and over the weekend from 8:30am - 4pm to order. Dyson's Animal Pro
I found that being allergic to dust that the old Dyson I had was a dream and I finally upgraded after 15 years of great use. This model is terrible to open and dust goes everywhere so is crap for dust allergies. You have to reach in and pull any of the hair out with your fingers and get filthy in the meantime I think also that this is a terrible vacuum cleaner.
Have no problem with suction but there is no flat head for just everyday vacuuming of carpet as the the suction is too much for my new carpet.
Barrel falls over all the time.
Terrible design and expensive to boot. Not at all recommended.

We wanted to reach out to provide some support in response to some of the concerns you are having. To effectively empty the bin canister, we recommend to take the bin off the machine and lower it into a large garbage bin, such as a council bin. There is a non-turbine flat vacuum head available for the DC54, however it doesn't come standard inside the box of the Animal Pro model. This floor tool is called a Musclehead, and it can be purchased via our customer care helpline for the price of $55.00 AUD + free shipping. Our helpline is open Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm and over the weekend from 8:30am - 4pm to order. Kind Regards, Taryn Facebook.com/DysonThank you, I have tried with the silver button. I would like to purchase the head though and will do. That will make things a lot easier. The machine is ok but its expensive for the troubles and I see that it is no longer available.

Absolutely the worst vacuum cleaner I have ever wasted more than $900 on...all the turbo head does is flick dust into the air. Tried to take it back after only one use but the store it was purchased from basically said to "go away, we know they are crap, you sucker for buying it" . this is my second Dyson, will never buy one again.

Totally regret buying this!!
Had an upright Dyson throughout the nineties, loved it, have always had a dog so it was great for dog hair. Bought the new Animal pro a couple of months ago and am so disappointed!! It is so hard to separate parts and put on the different brushes, so hard to get the click pipe off to use the small attachments, and the flexi pipe is just impossible as it just keeps clicking back together! Tried to extend it to clean top of blinds - just a nightmare!!! The most hard work vacuuming I have ever done!! Then trying to click the extending pipe back in - be prepared for it to take forever, and it's so 'plasicky" it all feels like it will snap and break. I will never buy a Dyson again, they have totally gone down in workmanship and up in price!!!

Questions & Answers

Hello the decorative red rubber that goes around the cyclone is falling apart and bits of the rubber have broken off leaving gaps. The Hoover still works fine and I have noticed that other people's machines have the same issue. Is the red rubber just there to make the Hoover look nice or does it serve a purpose? And why does it degrade?
Thank you.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your question.
If this particular rubber strip peels off the outside of the cyclone, it should have no expected negative impact on the performance of the machine.
Please reach out at [email protected], and we will be happy to help you further.

The canister on my Dyson Cinetic Animal Pro will not slide back up after emptying?

Hi Suzy,
Thanks for your question.
It sounds as if you may have a Cinetic Big Ball Animal Pro rather than a DC54 Animal Pro.
If you have a Cinetic Big Ball Animal Pro please see this video for troubleshooting this issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvBf-3IQtg4
If you have a DC54 Animal Pro, please email us to clarify which part is not sliding up and we will assist you.

Can I get a refund or replacement for an older model Dyson? the Dyson DC54 that I have has dirt passing through the cyclone (no pre motor filter) means they end up in the HEPA filter hidden in the ball itself. As the HEPA filter is not user friendly replaceable I would like to have it swapped for the older DC29 which is still available in Target and Big W. My vacuum is still under warranty. but having it sent back to a service centre to replace the hidden filter is a pain and will cost me money once the warranty runs out.
