Dyson lied! There is a filter in the Ball!
Was amazed at no filters to wash claim! Found out that there is a filter in the Ball that is susceptible to dust/dirt passing the 54 cyclones because of a lack of pre motor filter.
Not happy with it. Hidden HEPA filter cost AUD35 to replace and lots of hard work to dismantle it.

Designed to vacuum air.
Most expensive paperweight ever.
Flicks rice around on the tiles, not allowed to vacuum up flour because according to dyson thats not general house hold use. Pet fur gets caught in the worlds smallest entry for a vacuum. Crushed potato chips gets flick across the carpet. It fills up in just seconds due to the worlds smallest catcher. The rotator is great for flicking stuff across the room then it is for picking stuff up. Hard to empty too. Just overall a terrible machine.

If the Turbine head is flicking debris away from the head rather than collecting it, this is a good indication that there is blockage in the airway of the Turbine head or perhaps in the lower duct inlet underneath the bin canister. Shockingly poor design of the Dyson 54 Animal Pro! Non-user friendly!
This model is shockingly non-user friendly in emptying the clear bin dust catcher. Despite the emptying instructions, and Dyson reps patronising us in their supposedly simplistic multi-stage emptying procedure, it is unwieldy and awkward to empty the dust catcher without getting covered in the collected dust and debris. It is surprisingly disappointing given Sir James Dyson's earlier revolutionary designs and ease of use. Alas, this model disastrously fails in its user friendliness, the ergonomics, and is resting on laurels it does not deserve....Read more
The price fraudulently infers a well-designed product inline with the founding Dyson models. This is not so. If we could get a refund we would, as we feel that this model, as well as other Dyson products, infuriatingly and impudently misrepresents the Dyson name, and the name of all supposedly good products. We can not speak positively of the Dyson brand and are saddened by many a social conversation that unanimously derides the many Dyson products that fail to deliver.Similar opinion? will need to buy a replacement, not a Dyson
Very unhappy with the purchase. Bought in 2014 and have used it 10 times. Use a Hoover stick in preference.
Filthy to empty. extremely heavy to use and hard to maneuver. Poor suction and sent in for repair. They left no notes as to what they had done, had to ring and ask. Replaced a valve and they believe that will help. Informed by the helpline it needs to be emptied twice during the cleaning of a 3 bedroom house/ apartment. Can see why it is discontinued but very sad there is no recourse for those who have purchased this lemon

Huge Disappointment
I replaced my old DC05 with this and am very disappointed. It isn't great at picking up dirt but the worst issue is the impossibility of emptying the canister. I have to resort to using a stick or a skewer to dislodge the fluff and dust that gets caught between the two canister sleeves. This is not up to Dyson quality and unfortunately, it cost a bomb so I can't afford to replace it.
UPDATE - Dyson advised that there is a little grey button which becomes exposed after you depress the red button on the canister. If you press this, the outer sleeve comes away and the dust and dirt can be brushed off. Not ideal as it's pretty messy, but it works.

The worst Vacuum I have ever used
We bought this Dyson at the end of last year and have been very disappointed with it for the below reasons.
1. The suction is dreadful. The hose of the vacuum narrows to a thin valve which attaches to the barrel. Dyson says this is to prevent large debris from damaging the filter and mechanisms of the vacuum. The valve is so narrow it will not even allow a piece of popcorn through, I would certainly not call that large debris. So if you have children then YOU WILL HAVE TO SWEEP UP BEFORE VACUUMING as nothing other than dust will be actually ...Read more
sucked up by the vacuum. Most normal vacuums have the same size entry to the bag or waste area as the hose so you will never have a blockage as if it fits in the hose it will be sucked into the waste area. A vacuum that costs over $800 and will not even suck up small pieces of food, paper etc is ridiculous. This is a major design fault and makes it the worst vacuum I have ever owned. 2. The heads of this vacuum are also not up to standard and take twice as long as standard vacuums. The floor tool pushes dust, crumbs around the floor and the one for carpet as mentioned in other posts just sprays debris all around the floor as the suction is so terrible. 3.The emptying of the barrel is as everyone has said messy and time-consuming. Even when you are emailed the procedure by the "helpful" staff at Dyson. I have called and emailed Dyson numerous times about this machine since we unfortunately bought it and been advised to buy a different head for the machine and check that nothing is blocking the narrow valve. All useless information when the basic design of the machine is faulty. I would have thought that Dyson who pride themselves on their reputation would recall or refund such a dreadful example of vacuum and reading the other reviews it appears I am not the only one. It is obviously discontinued for a reason ( or many reasons in this case).Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

DC54 ANIMAL PRO VACUUM CLEANER
This cleaner is only 7 months old and a total waste of money. Hard refitting barrel after cleaning. Attachments are a total waste of time because they don't do the job properly plus they can't be fitted to the barrel for easy access. Wish I could get a refund on this stupid Animal Pro Plus vacuum cleaner.

Plastic Body Attracts as Much Dirt on Outside as it Sucks Up!
Sucks really well on carpets, sucks so hard on smooth floors that the motor screams & the head is stuck in place. Not quiet, no more mobile than others lve had. Canister holds such a small amount that l emptied it after every use. The only way to empty & clean a bagless properly is to dismantle & wash each part. Oddly enough, the recommendation is to not wash as seals will deform - true! So confined to brushing, l did the job outside & damp wiped all parts l could reach, wand & brush included. Combed out the stuck hairs & put all in a separate plastic bag into the rubbish. After that, went & took an antihistamine tablet & had a shower. Summary: vaccuuming 20 minutes, cleanup, 1 hour.

Disappointing
There's really not much point in reviewing the DC54 range because it seems to be no longer available at the Dyson website. It would seem Dyson did listen to everyone's negative reviews after all because they have created a whole new vacuum cleaner with a completely different method for emptying the canister.
I totally agree with all the 1-2 star reviews regarding the DC54. I'm posting this review because in the last few weeks I've tweaked both the turbine and hard floor tools and I have noticed an improvement in their performance. For those...Read more
who still have their DC54's (and are still disappointed in them) you might like to try a couple of things. The hard floor tool. If your machine is out of warranty you might like to try cutting away the bristles immediately in front of the intake area in the middle of the head. I only cut away the bristles actually blocking the intake and left the ones in the middle. Next I cut away just the one "tooth" (on each side) directly in front of the aforementioned bristles. When I first used this floor head, fluff and debris would get caught around the outside on all the bristles and nothing would get sucked up. Now it does seem to work much better. The turbine tool. This thing drives me crazy. It's my main grief with the machine because it flicks things out in all directions - beyond maddening!! Dyson seem to think it's because the head is blocked somehow ...not so. It's a design fault. I've never had a blockage in this machine and I've had a problem since day 1. Again, if your machine is out of warranty you might like to try this. Remove the brush bar from the head then pull off the end that slots into the locking mechanism and pull out TWO bars of bristles - either the black OR the red. You must remove either the 2 black bars or the 2 red bars. They need to be the same or the head won't be balanced. I removed both of the soft black bristle bars (because I wanted the stronger ones for vacuuming carpets/rugs) then put it all back together. I've noticed the suction is much stronger and I think it's also a bit noisier. If you try this and find it doesn't help it's very easy to replace the brushes. End result for me is I don't mind using the Dyson now. I think it's a improvement but you still need to lift the head and drag it backwards over some things to pick them up. The plus is what it doesn't pick up doesn't seem to get flung around the room anymore. In my opinion the best tool is the small tangle free one except it's extremely noisy and I have to use ear plugs when I use this one. It's great on long pile rugs (eg., Ikea's "Adum"). I found the turbine tool (mentioned in above paragraph) only cleaned the surface of long pile rugs but it is OK on short pile carpets and rugs.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

I had a Dyson for 16 years and never had any issues with it. Was built strong and it is still going today but recently sold it and upgraded to the new Dyson animal pro in August 2015. What a mistake!! Whilst vacuuming the carpet, I smelt a burning smell from the motor and it stopped working.
I rang Dyson to be told it may have had a blockage without me knowing as this device is known for it. One would know if there's a blockage due to a lack of suction!! I checked and there was no blockage.

ve done and tried telling me, if there was a blockage, I'd have to pay. I look after my products and considering I had one for 16 years with no problems, perhaps it's YOUR faulty device that caused the issue not me. Fair enough if the product was being used in a way that it shouldn't, I'd agree and pay for it however, with the simple use of vacuuming the carpet, it should work in the way it's made for. In addition, the customer service is poor!!!!! To say I'm dissapponited about the product and "customer service " is an understatement. The suction is crap! It barely looks like my carpet has been vacuumed! It has been sent back to Dyson and they believe nothing is wrong with it, but I beg to differ. I didn't pay $800 for a vacuum to be worse than a cheap Kmart one. My cleaner brings her own kmart vacuum to vac my carpet now because my machine is useless.

se' if it doesn't vacuum properly and Dyson won't do anything about it. I used to have a DC23 motorhead and it was amazing so wrongly thought that the newer top of the range vacuum would be better. Also the staff member I dealt with was just rude and a smart crap on the phone and just left a message when it was getting sent back saying it has been checked and you will not be receiving a refund and that was it. Obviously I am not the only one who thinks that this machine is crap, have a look at the ratings!! The stick vacuum of their vacuums my carpet better than this model. The roller head is dreadful as it is suction driven not motor driven, also the hard floor tool flicks up all of the time and doesn't stay flat. I have sent them a follow up email with no response. Upon getting it back from service, i have vacuumed 1 room and the roller head has blocked with the dust, not an actual object. I don't want to have to keep un blocking it ever vacuum! I am now awaiting an escalated cal back. NOT HAPPY JAN, all I wasn't is my money back.1 comment

Suction is excellent. Accessories are good especially the smooth floor and stiff brush. Not sure how or where I will use the flexi accessory tool. Love the dog brush accessory and so does my dog.
Emptying is a complete disaster/mess.

We read this and thought we could offer some further assistance with the bin emptying process. To empty the bin, take the bin off the machine and open it over a garbage bin. The bulk of the dust and debris will fall from the bin. If you find debris caught in the trap door, you can use the combination tool to hold the trap door open and give it a gentle tap out. If you are having trouble removing debris from the shroud, you can remove the clear bin to make this easier. To do this, open the bin like you were going to empty it normally, then press the silver button between the two red rods and you’ll be able to remove the clear bin from the cyclone. Once the clear bin is removed it will make it easier to clean the bin flap as well. You can then also use the combination tool (with brush extended) to brush any debris off the shroud. We recommend the debris doesn’t fill over the red max line. If it does, it will make the machine significantly harder to empty. Whilst the machine doesn't have a capacity as large as previous Dyson machines, your DC54 has no filters to wash or replace. If we can be of any further assistance, please reach out to our helpline on 1800 239 766. Our helpline is open Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm and over the weekend from 8:30am - 4pm. ously it was dead easy to empty. Also, on your website you show a child emptying the bin, suggesting this was child's play. However, the bin is empty and he does struggle with releasing the catches. I would definitely not recommend this vacuum until this product is improved. And I still think it should be recalled. People are hoodwinked into purchasing this because of your Dyson reputation. However, I won't be fooled again. Emptying the bin should be the easiest part of the job not the dreaded part.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

How did they get the hard floor tool so wrong?!
Previously, I had the DC05 and the only fault I had with this vacuum cleaner was the difficulty in cleaning the brush bar. The ease of removal of the brush bar has far improved with this Dyson DC54 and having three daughters with very long hair, this feature was very important to me.
Unfortunately, the hard floor tool has gone backwards in its design. I would not have thought it possible to make a mistake on a hard floor tool, but Dyson definitely has with this one! Firstly, the suction hole in the hard floor tool has been split into two, ju...Read more
st either side of centre with a plastic "bridge" separating the two holes. This seems to reduce suction and I find when vacuuming areas where dust accumulates such as under lounges, I am having to stop and poke the dust through as the suction divided between the two holes is not sufficient to suck it through. Should I remove the hard floor tool, the suction is great. The second problem is with vacuuming hair. The hair is sucked in through both holes and therefore is trapped between the holes over the plastic bridge that separates them. When vacuuming I am constantly stopping to pull the tangle of hair and dust away from one of the holes to thread through the other. This is a huge problem and very frustrating, causing me to attend to the blockage every minute or so in some areas. My third issue is that when using the hard floor tool, it won't even pick up the smallest of crumbs, but rather just sweeps them around the floor. To be honest, it is quicker and easier to sweep, than to use this tool. I have one last concern with this vacuum, and that is in emptying the barrel. An allergy sufferer should definitely avoid this job. Now that the lid is attached to the barrel and opens on a hinge, it is impossible to secure a plastic bag around the barrel and shake the dust out, as I did with the DC05, because the flapping lid gets in the way. There is much less room between the outer casing and the inner mechanism, so the dust gets firmly stuck and the tool supplied needs to always be used to scrape out the debris, causing skin and clothing to become covered in the dust. You would want to ensure that you were showering and changing your clothes pretty quickly after emptying the barrel. Dyson, you definitely need to revisit this vacuum cleaner. It could be a great product if you improved the hard floor tool, and the barrel.1 comment

The vacuum still has a terrible time with this, the suction is so poor. There are constant blockages where the bin connects to the wand due to the narrowing of the entry and this is really hard to clear. Same problems with constant blocking of the hard floor tool which is a complete waste of time. This is my second Dyson. The first I loved, but never will I purchase another after this.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

I purchased this machine thinking it would be the best vacuum. It is flimsy and after 2 years I am ready to throw it in the trash. I have animals with long coats which is the main reason I bought the machine. It no longer works like it used to. I have checked for blockages, etc. I am continuously having to empty the bin. This is not easy as the hair gets stuck and is difficult to remove. I am very disappointed.

Worst Dyson I have ever had.
We recently changed from a Dyson upright after the power head died at 5 years old.
Apparently they no longer make the power head as they were having trouble with them. (Harvey Norman sales Lady).
I find the DC54 does NOT pick up animal hair from carpet near as good as the previous older upright.
One needs to continually move nozzle backwards and forwards across carpet to have any real effect.
It was also the top of the range in its type.
Will not be buying another Dyson after having had three.
For the very high price, the suction is way below standard.
I have a 1974 Volta Red Devil (I use in my car) which STILL has suction almost as good.
Not happy.

Overrated hype. Designer must be short and have a tiny home. Wand too short causing to bend over while vacuuming the cord is way to short and tracking not perfect. Suction is good but the proof is the proof and there is no perfect vacuum cleaner yet. If the power cord was 3 metres longer I would have been happy. Back to the drawing board Mr. Dyson.

Then DC54 Pro was a dollar cheaper than the DC54 at JB Hifi Dunedin,
only had a week The performance appears good and suction fine, easy to manoeuvre, I'd expect it to be a little quieter thou. The DC54 pro comes with extra tools used on carpet and wooden floors. A little disappointed with the reviews and I'd read these before I purchased lets hope I don't change my view and these people are being picky.
The price was the driving factor on our purchase, I wanted one when we lived in Aussie however the price never dropped enough over the weekend Harvey Norman had a trade in deal where they cost $799 after trade in, I when to check out JBHIfi and they had them for $797 NZD for the DC54 Animal Pro and $798 for the DC54 which has less tools, than the animal pro.

I am annoyed at myself for purchasing this even after I saw all the bad reviews. I thought maybe these people are just being really picky. Dyson is well known brand and their products should be excellent. But I was wrong. The machine is not what I expected. The suction is there but that is ALL. e. I have a back problems. The brush heads need to be continuously cleaned or they stop rotating and get clogged. This attachment will not clean hard floors as advertised. It just sticks to the floor (due to the strong suction) and you need to push it really hard so it can slide on the floor. And then the dust and dirt just gets pushed around. The hard floor attachment works a little bit better, but it too leaves a lot dirt on the floor and I need to go over the same spot a couple of times. My kids find it difficult to use and having to change the heads because I have carpet and hard floors is too much effort! I know have to do all the vacuuming because they refuse to use it. Overall, its not worth the money. I wish I had purchased a different vacuum.. It was very expensive, and the price does not reflect quality.3 comments

If the turbine head is blowing dust around, there is most likely a blockage within the turbine head itself. We recommend to remove the brushbar using a ten or twenty cent coin to twist the cap at the end of the cleanerhead that retains the brushbar counterclockwise. Once done, you will be able to remove both the cap and the brushbar. Please then check the cavity where the brushbar was in the cleanerhead and clear out any debris. You should be able to look through the neck of the head and see straight through. Please then reassemble and retry the turbine. We recommend the debris doesn’t fill over the red max line. I want my DC 23 Back!!
while with Dyson, it is true that you get ''more suck for your buck"!"... this new ''toy'' is a total disappointment. I purchased this to replace my aging DC 23, turbo with the awesome motorised head.(it unfortunately blew up and was going to cost more to repair than replace..in retrospect, I should have had it repaired)..this is not a patch on that. It feels flimsy, there is not enough weight in the head for heavy duty carpets and dont get me started on trying to empty the bloody thing, I end up wearing most of the contents of the bin.

We are sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the DC54 Animal Pro. It is strange that you mention the DC23 was going to cost more to repair than replace (with a DC54 Animal Pro) as we cap all services at $299 within Australia. The entire vacuum cleaner is tested at Dyson on a computerised rig that accurately simulates vacuuming at its most vigorous. As well as this we complete extensive home trials to replicate normal domestic use. In conclusion, the plastics used to manufacture Dyson vacuum cleaners have consistently proven to be durable and strong. To empty the bin, take the bin off the machine and open it over a garbage bin. The bulk of the dust and debris will fall from the bin. If you find debris caught in the trap door, you can use the combination tool to hold the trap door open and give it a gentle tap out. I settled and ended up buying the D54 Animal Pro. I have a dog. I vacuum - often - he is a 4 legged walking hair dispersal unit!! When I try to empty the bin, the hair gets stuck and the brush thing is difficult to use as the gap to use the tool is too narrow. The only way to completely clear the bin is as you say, remove the entire bin from the cyclone, all well and good but then you have to deal with dust and hair. Honestly, this new system has a number of issues that really make it a bit frustrating to use. Perhaps if you are looking for product testers in future, you should pick us, Boof loses enough hair, to test any machine...lol..Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

The Hoover still works fine and I have noticed that other people's machines have the same issue. Is the red rubber just there to make the Hoover look nice or does it serve a purpose? And why does it degrade?
Thank you.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your question.
If this particular rubber strip peels off the outside of the cyclone, it should have no expected negative impact on the performance of the machine.

The canister on my Dyson Cinetic Animal Pro will not slide back up after emptying?
I seem to have done it by accident on other occasions, but this time it's just not happening. Any ideas?

Hi Suzy,
Thanks for your question.
It sounds as if you may have a Cinetic Big Ball Animal Pro rather than a DC54 Animal Pro.
If you have a Cinetic Big Ball Animal Pro please see this video for troubleshooting this issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvBf-3IQtg4
If you have a DC54 Animal Pro, please email us to clarify which part is not sliding up and we will assist you.
For any further assistance, please email us at [email protected] and we will be happy to help.

Can I get a refund or replacement for an older model Dyson? the Dyson DC54 that I have has dirt passing through the cyclone (no pre motor filter) means they end up in the HEPA filter hidden in the ball itself. As the HEPA filter is not user friendly replaceable I would like to have it swapped for the older DC29 which is still available in Target and Big W. My vacuum is still under warranty. but having it sent back to a service centre to replace the hidden filter is a pain and will cost me money once the warranty runs out.
